Staying at Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor was a truly unforgettable experience. This historic hotel combines timeless elegance, luxury, and the charm of old-world Egypt. The beautiful architecture, classic interiors, and peaceful gardens create a unique atmosphere. The location is perfect, right in the heart of Luxor, close to the Nile and the amazing ancient temples and monuments. The rooms were comfortable, beautifully designed, and full of character. The staff provided excellent service with genuine Egyptian hospitality. The garden area is stunning, and enjoying a relaxing moment there feels like traveling back in time. A perfect choice for anyone visiting Luxor and looking for a luxurious stay surrounded by history. Tip for future travelers: Choose a room with a view of the gardens or Nile, and take time to enjoy the hotel’s historic atmosphere — it is part of the Luxor experience.
Visited in in April 2026 to have a drink and enquire about booking. The location and view of the Nile and Luxor’s temples are truly 5-star — you feel the history. However, my personal impression from reception was disappointing in my opinion. Staff I spoke with seemed unresponsive satisfactorily to basic questions, and I didn’t feel welcome. Based on that brief experience, I chose not to book. I booked a Nile cruise instead and found the staff more attentive and proactive. This location deserves service that makes guests feel valued.
We had dinner in La Corniche restaurant, which has been the main restaurant for 134 years. Superb service and great food, their signature dessert Opera Trio is a must. Very reasonable cost, worth making the effort even if you are not staying at the hotel
Historic decayed elegance are the words that come to mind. The location of the hotel walking distance to Luxor temple and close to Karnak is a major plus. Of the grand hotels in Egypt I would say that this one is in need of an upgrade especially with the four seasons slated to open next door soon. The staff seemed helpful but a little disengaged overall, without going out of their way as was typical on the rest of our trip. I guess it’s hard to review this hotel after coming from a really well run Cataract hotel in Aswan, but there is great potential here. I wish they would take more advantage of the potential views they have over Luxor Temple, better priced cocktails in the bar (why is a signature cocktail $40?), and elevating their pool deck food offerings.
very old and not worth at all
very old and not feel like 5 stars! 2 stars maximum
Beautiful, historic building but not maintained at all!
No maintenance, rude staff, as women we felt uncomfortable at times. Male staff was very intrusive and harrassing. The young woman at the reception was extremely rude and unfriendly. Two male staff were harassing us on the street and running after us. The food was not good. We would absolutely not recommend staying there. For female travelers we would overall not recommend Egypt.
The architecture
The hotel need to be renovated
The place is unique and decorated beautifully. The staff are amazing. The garden is so beautiful.
Nothing.
The hotel is in tragic conditions. Délabré, run-down and decadent have now a new meaning after seeing how Sofitel is running this historic place. The manager and the owner should be ashamed of the state of the facilities. We were attracted here by the allure of the hotel’s history but it impossible to enjoy to stay here since the premises are close to fall apart and the carpets in the public areas and the room are very old, dusty and feel dirty. I am sure not a dime was invested in the hotel at least in the last 30 years. I have never been a fan of Sofitel but after staying here I will stay for sure at large from this brand forever.
The hotel was a beautifully maintained building both in the interior and in the garden. The hotel had both premium and normal restaurants. We visited each of them and enjoyed the food according to the personal menu. The staff were polite and very willing to help with any information as well as for departure transportation. It was possible to take a tourist tour at the hotel heading towards the Valley of the Kings or the monuments and other tourist destinations of Luxor.
The rooms were very small for the price of the room, two people could barely move around in this space. The room overlooked the Nile and the noise from the street was terrifying day and night.
Took my mum here for 4 nights as part of her birthday 'grand egyptian tour' trip. And it didn't disappoint. From the exceptional staff to STUNNING gardens and wonderful pool area. We had dinner and a fabulous breakfast in Corniche restaurant, both services were lovely. Food beautifully cooked/presented and again service was exceptional. They made a real fuss of mum for her birthday which was greatly appreciated. And the tranquil garden and relaxing pool area made an oasis in the heart of a chaotic city. Thank you all it was magical good old fashioned service and hospitality
Beautiful historic hotel with magnificent gardens. We had a suite which we did not feel was value for money as it was over large, dark, furnished with oddments such as hat stands and occasional tables etc etc. Most disappointing aspect was the 1886 Restaurant which we were sold as a fine dining experience - it was'nt. In short there was no menu, it was fish or fish which for my wife who is allergic to fish made it challenging. We inquired if there was an a la carte menu to be told we had been sold a fixed price menu with no alternatives. This was NOT as advertized. In fairness the hotel did refund us as neither of us ate anything from the limited menu. However by comparison the pool area and informal restaurant was very good as was the club bar. In short the hotel is the classic "curates egg" - good in parts.
I had a great stay at the hotel and all the staff were friendly and helpful
Lovely hotel, we stayed in the Pavilion which is an Annex in the beautiful gardens near the pool. The service has been excellent, Sara from Guest Relations is very helpful, the pool attendants & breakfast team are particular standouts. The hotel is dated but still worthwhile staying, well located opposite the Nile.
Very nice hotel and amazing garden the service in the royal bar excellent.
Great stay. Great room service. Would recommend for anyone travelling to Luxor. Great location.
Excellent stay at the Sofitel Winter Palace. The hotel interior and gardens are immaculate. Service was impeccable. The breakfast buffet had such a wide selection of options. Stayed in a garden suite room which was very quiet.
Such a lovely hotel for a long stay, made special by the lovely staff. Let's hope the new owners keep all that is good when it reopens in 2028....
Just to be aware if you wish to have a drink in the winter place bar it will cost you 1000 Egyptian just to get in if not a resident, l was amazed tonight after all the years staying at the place and the pavilion the one time I didn’t stay there l am confronted with what l can only say is that greed ,luckily l have experienced the hotel and now is off my list
Lovely stay as usual. Fabulous location. Garden is beautiful.
Nulla
It’s past glorious history , his past grandiosity, the gardens ( though a lot of it is tacky)great location - comfortable beds
Run down property - borderline shabby / reception staff neither nice nor helpful /expensive /no double glass windows so very very noisy on Nile view even with windows closed.. whole hotel needs seriously makeover and new staff
Great location - historical building- beautiful garden -confortable beds- very nice room staff
Run down- seriously run down - reception staff not helpful, not nice , barely polite - No decent concierge around- doormen hopeless: all really really bad for such a supposedly high class hotel - seriously overpriced( very stained carpets, lifts doors not closing properly, bad and slow service in restaurants ..) lives on his glorious past - waiting to be taken over ..
Our stay at the Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor was absolutely magical. The hotel’s historical charm, elegant interiors, and beautiful views of the Nile made it a truly unforgettable experience. The staff were warm, attentive, and always ready to help with a genuine smile. The breakfast buffet was exceptional with a wide variety of delicious options. Walking through the lush gardens felt like stepping into another era. We can’t wait to return and relive this wonderful experience in Luxor’s most iconic hotel
Very nice hotel, clean and comfortable. The staff are friendly and the service is very good. I had a pleasant stay and would be happy to come back again.

Elegant period property with stunning garden an oasis in Luxor … well situated for visit to temple
No issues
Right across from the Nile. So much history here. A stones throw from the Luxor Temple.Great dining within the hotel as well as across the street. The grounds are beautiful. Breakfast is included.
Beautiful hotel, gardens were fabulous and really enjoyed the 1886 restaurant (although portions were too big) A little piece of history in Luxor on the east bank Hotel and bathroom very spacious overlooking the garden - breakfast was varied with lots of choices Had some great photos taken on the fabulous staircase and afternoon tea looked delicious Loved the elegance from a bygone era and was a privilege to stay
Comfort, style, class. The hotel is impeccable for its pedigree and heritage.

I never expected it will be like this , I highly recommend staying in winter Palace.
What’s not to like?!
The Winter Palace is such an amazing Hotel x it makes you feel like royalty. The gardens are superb and the gardeners are working to keep them tidy. The food is excellent x we went in both restaurants and the experience was fab. The pool area is great plenty of sunbeds and the pool staff very helpful like the outdoor restaurant again food very high quality. We stayed at the Pavilion 20 years ago and wanted to come back to Egypt for my 60th bday. I felt that the Winter Palace the staff, the excellent service from the front desk , the restaurant staff the housekeeping , everyone made my stay the best ever. Great Hotel Great staff best place to stay in Egypt x
Very nice, elegant hotel with a great view of the Nile. Situated in a convenient location just down from the Luxor temple with plenty of dining options either at the hotel or nearby. The staff were all very helpful and friendly. The rooms were comfortable and clean. The grounds and hotel are beautiful. This was a great hotel to stay at, and I would definitely stay here again.
Nice hotel and excellent service
We had drinks 25/2/2026 evening at the bar beside the pool. Very poor quality, extravagant prices ~ 40€ per drink. The service was good and they accepted to change one of the drinks as they had brought us a wrong one
This is one of my best hotel's i stayed in Egypt the atmosphere of the palace and the elegance of the srvice
I enjoyed my stay at the hotel and the staff are friendly and helpful
The hotel is lovely and I enjoyed my stay
A perfect blend of luxury and heritage in the heart of Luxor.
It was a perfect stay , Food , service and rooms . Staff are very professional.
The food and the services are excellent
I had a wonderful stay at this historic hotel. The service was excellent from check-in to check-out, with friendly and professional staff always ready to help. The building’s rich history and classic architecture create a unique and charming atmosphere that makes the experience truly special. Rooms were clean, comfortable, and well maintained. Overall, it is a perfect blend of heritage, elegance, and outstanding hospitality
Good food and excellent service
Location and rooms were beautiful
Service was at times overbearing and restaurants expensive and poor
The hotel is amazing i really enjoyed my stay
The stay was great with beautiful view from the room and the staff were very healpful especially at the royal bar with delicious cocktails
Stunning architecture, royal garden, charming Nile view and very special central location and every moment you can feel with elegant , you should have a visit and explore the beauty of the winter palace.
A very beautiful hotel with a wonderful history, an exceptional building, garden, and location.
The property needed a lot of repairs, and it was sad to see such beauty in such a poor state - the ceiling, the parquet, and the chandelier. The receptionists weren't interested in the leaving guests.
Beautiful property and unbelievable location. We got a room with a Nile view and waking up early and watching the sunrise from our balcony was something I’ll never forget. The pool area is fantastic and I wish we’d stayed longer so we could have actually just had a whole day by the pool (we were out sightseeing a lot of the time). Breakfast was delicious and plentiful. We didn’t eat in any of the restaurants as didn’t have formal wear/shoes, which we should have checked in advance, but had a delicious lunch by the pool and drinks in the garden in the evening.
The bed was a little hard - though not sure if that’s because we were in the original (old) building and maybe rooms are more comfy in the garden buildings.
We stayed at the Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor during our holiday in Egypt. Having read the reviews on Tripadvisor, we booked rooms at the Winter Pavillion. We'd booked two rooms and as I am a Diamond ALL member, one of the rooms was upgraded to a suite. The location of the hotel on the bank of the river is quite convenient. There are plenty of travel agents and a bank to exchange money to the left of the hotel. Across the hotel, along the promenade are a variety of restaurants (surprisingly, a few restaurants have the exact same menu leading us to think that there is perhaps a central kitchen) as well as the requisite overpriced with questionable quality souvenir shops. On the right of the hotel is a market area about 5 minutes away. There is McDonalds and some more restaurants as well as shopping (including gold pendants) and small convenience stores where the prices are unmarked on the products and depend on the shopkeeper's assessment of your ability to pay. If you want to pick up some local beers, there is a store in the market. Note that you will be accompanied and offered multiple services every single step of your walk but while it does not get aggressive, it is extremely persistent and annoying. The hotel itself has two sections, the original building and the Winter Pavillion. The original building is worth a visit for the atmosphere but not where I'd stay. The Winter Pavillion is a bit more modern and I emphasize a bit. The grounds of the hotel are lovely to walk through and we saw flamingos. The rooms in the Winter Pavillion are decently sized but old. The TVs are small and are the very old LCD type. The bathrooms are average. Fortunately, there is a bidet. The shower area is extremely old fashioned. The bathtub has been repurposed into a shower area with absolutely no paneling on the side. The result, every shower leads to a pool of water outside the tub, which is a huge safety hazard due to the risk of slipping on the tiles. We had the housekeeping staff install shower curtains in both the bathrooms. The rooms again due to their age, do not have multi plug sockets and you will need to request an adaptor using the show and tell method. The rooms also do not have heating, and the air conditioning controls are a placebo in that they are controlled centrally. In December, it means either switching off the air condition and getting stuffy or double blankets. The staff offered a heater but looking at the age of the hotel and the equipment, we did not feel it would be a safe option. We had breakfast every day at the restaurant next to the Winter Pavillion. The variety was average, but the quality was very mediocre. For instance, a decaf latte was hot milk with two sachets of Nescafe decaf powder. The preserves, the bread selection etc were very average in type and quality. The fresh fruits and hummus were great though. There was a live egg/waffle/crepe station and the omelets were decent, however the hygiene was a bit suspect. Whenever the staff left the station, the birds would make a feast of the condiments as very often the staff forgot to cover them. What makes this hotel not worthy of the Sofitel brand name is the dismal quality of the service. The front desk staff are perpetually disinterested and or they do not follow simple questions. It took us forever to check out as the desk staff were unable to operate the credit card machine correctly. The worst service was at the restaurant where we had breakfast every morning. With the exception of the gentleman at the egg station and the one who served coffee, every single staff member had a perpetually sullen look and were extremely curt while speaking. This made for a rather irritating start of the day. They did brighten up considerably to specific nationalities. In summary, average rooms, good location, terrible service but with the extremely limited options of global hotels in Luxor, we didn't have too many options.
