Reviewed Sep 10, 2026The hotel exterior was not very inviting with you entering via an asphalt carpark. There were towels on the floor both sides of the entrance door from the flooding a few days earlier. Thankfully the interior décor was much more inviting. Our room was a good size and had comfortable beds and chairs. Shower pressure was also good. We had dinner at the onsite restaurant which was pleasant.

Reviewed Sep 8, 2026We were so lucky to be dealing with Monica who helped us to modify our booking after not being able to get to Greymouth via the Tranzalpine railway on its first day… she made sure we could still keep our room for the next day and adjusted our fee accordingly. The room was roomy and very comfortable and the breakfast was good value. Would highly recommend esp for customer service.

Reviewed Aug 19, 2026The convenience from the TranzAlpine Train station was perfect. Walking down the one street took 10 minutes and getting a taxi back, after having heavier luggage was $2. We had a room on the top floor, chose a room with a river view. It was perfect! We had a small balcony, was great for photos and having a cuppa while looking at the township, River and sea; (the balcony was shared with one other room, didnt matter to us, just lock your door when you go back in). The room was very spacious, the shower had excellent pressure and the bed was very comfortable. We played games at the table by the balcony, watching the sun go down was special. Our breakfast was good, had hot options of eggs, hash browns, bacon, mushrooms, and sausages. There was fruit salad, cereals, milk, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, as well as bread/toast. Very happy, would definitely return there, one day. Staff were friendly and held our bags safely while we walked around before returning on the train back to Christchurch. Room was clean, tv was a good size.

Reviewed Aug 19, 2026The hotel has had a recent renovation and it looks much better for it. Our room was warm and comfortable. The bed was especially comfortable. The location is right in the centre of Mawhera, Greymouth, easy to get anywhere on foot. The only negative was the street cleaner outside making a racket in the early hours.
There are some small touches missed during the renovation like the bathroom windowsills could do with sanding and painting. The roof panelling has gaps - perfect - if you can't hide the gap make it large but one small panel had a narrow gap - wrong.

Despite having pre booked the room, the heating wasn’t turned on, the fridge wasn’t working. To use the room safe you had to get on your knees on the floor and then it didn’t work. The toiletries in the bathroom were totally in the wrong order and a cheap black bucket in the bathroom corner does not constitute a bathroom bin.

Staff were very blunt, (especially the restaurant staff member in the morning) The rooms were dusty and mirrors has marks on them. Bathroom seemed u finished, (big gap between the mirror and the tiles) The place needs a good paint, as it’s chipping around the shower. No fan in the bathroom.
