Free parking, traditional ryokan experience, options for private onsen, walking to main attractions but still secluded for peaceful and quiet, private dining room.
If I have to nip pick, some of the dishes are cold when it’s served. The heater stoped working in the middle of the night in -5c, was woken up by the chills to turn it back on, took some time to have it back on too.

Friendly staff. Had the option of using two private onsen baths, which were free to use most of the time. The two private baths had different types of water, which was nice. The food was good and the futons were a bit softer than other ryokans, which made it easier to sleep on them.
Could have used with a better description for the meals (or a printed menu), as we didn’t know what each dish was. The only pillows provided were the ones filled with buckwheat, which made our necks hurt the next day. Yukata provided was a bit dirty and not high quality. No hanten provided so couldn’t walk at night in the city as it was too cold.
This was the perfect hotel for our first traditional ryokan experience. The hotel is small, only 7 rooms of the 14 are sold per night, giving you a private room to dine. Food was plentiful and delicious, although we stayed 2 nights we ate something different each time. Great location within walking distance to all must visit spots. As the ryokan is quiet the private onsens are often vacant, or no one else in the gendered onsens so is basically a private experience.
Wifi was slow but we had unlimited data with our eSIM so that didn't bother us too much.
Free parking
Location not far from Ubatake but very difficult to walk, esp with seniors
Private baths are always available. Meals are served in in a private room with good privacy and on time. Location next to foot bath and another public bath. walking distance to bus station. Overall decent value in Kusatsu.
No open air onsen
Private borrowable onsen for family use
Nothing

A very good total experience

Exceptional Location!! Walking distance to every main attraction in the city. Loved Foot spa right in front of the ryokan. Excellent Food! We stayed two nights with half boards. Every meal was delicious. A cleaning staff kindly taught us a way to wear Yukata properly when she saw us going out on those.
When we first arrived, no one was there in reception desk, had to wait for 10 minutes to meet a staff member. Disappointed about the Onsen baths in the ryokan. They are too small and poorly maintained.

This hotel is foreigner friendly and all staffs are very kind. Hot spring is good and must try private spring.
location is very good, just next to foot spring and only 5 minutes walk from bus terminal center.
Excellent location, rooms were comfortable and clean, food and service were excellent.
Bath water was not as hot we would’ve liked.
Really lovely stay. Delicious food and a really quiet and peaceful dining experience in a room by ourselves. The private hot spring baths were amazing, they were always available. Close to the centre of Kusatsu and the Yubatake.
Close to the town centre and had excellent food. The staff was very friendly.
Excellent location, cozy traditional atmosphere
Nothing!
Service was excellent, location was great (5min from bus station and Yubatake), private onsen in the room, room was big and spacious, heater was very strong as we travelled in winter.
NIL
The staff. The food. The onsen.
Distance from center. Lots of uphill and downhill walk.
Private onsen
Unpleasant smell in my room
Ryokan Tamura is an amazing accommodation experience. It is located close to town centre and the building is beautifully decorated with traditional details that make it feel warm and welcoming. Our hosts were very kind and made our stay special. Very highly commended them on the food. They were able to provide a vegan meal for breakfast and dinner which was amazing! The food was fresh and delicious and it was clear how much care went into the preparation.
Lovely ryoken experience near the main square. Staff were very helpful. Baths are great and food was superb
Its a little old and showing signs of wear and tear
Food (Dinner and breakfast) were okay. But the quality was not money valued.
Bathroom changing rooms were too small. There were no amenities.
Food was great and room was very spacious
Room bidet was not working. Would prefer slightly later checkout time
Location was right off the central onsen/square of Kusatsu. Very convenient, calm and quiet. The ryokan itself had 2 private and 2 gendered onsens that were almost always available for our own use and I will absolutely stay here again if I visit Kusatsu again.
Nothing - I even wish i stayed longer to make use of the in-house onsen!
I really loved the whole experience at Ryokan Tamura. I felt very relaxed and pampered since dinner and breakfast was served, and we loved using the onsen. We asked for vegan food, and they informed us that the broth may contain dashi, but for us that was ok. The food was delicious and we got to try some of the traditional Japanese cuisine consisting of mainly vegetables. There were men only and women only onsens, and two private onsens. The water was super warm and relaxing. The staff was also very welcoming and nice and spoke english.
Very clean room. Dinner and breakfat is exceptional. Comfy place and service is very nice.
A small but very friendly Ryoken. Happy with the personal service. Private onsen although is small but water is hot. One of the better onsen experience under -6 degree.
No open air onsen pool.
Ryokan is traditional w Japanese style service. The large room w private bath was actually very nice.
Ryokan is getting dated, food was average and they did not serve children which was unusual.
Great place to feel the traditional Japanese Ryokan vibe. We really enjoyed this hotel and definitely will come visit again in the future. The dinner and breakfast was perfect! Thank you so much for!
Nice private onsen, proximity to Yubatake, nice Kaiseki meals
Great customer service. Love the private onsen. Foods were amazing!
The hotel is very caring, but didn't have chance to live since the bus time is very limited in karuizawa. Please check the bus information very carefully. Sometimes transportation information is too detailed in JP which will result in misleading.
My stay at Ryokan Tamura in Kusatsu was truly exceptional. The private onsen bathroom added a luxurious touch to the traditional ryokan experience. The room was meticulously designed, blending modern comforts with Japanese aesthetics. The private onsen was a serene oasis, allowing for a relaxing soak in the mineral-rich waters with complete privacy. The staff's attention to detail and hospitality were remarkable, enhancing the overall stay. The kaiseki dinner served was a culinary delight, showcasing the finest local ingredients. Ryokan Tamura is a perfect choice for those seeking a tranquil and culturally enriching getaway.
This is an old-school Ryokan with exceptionally friendly staff who bent over backwards to help me. Having stayed in a few Ryokan-style inns on my trip, Tamura was by fat the best. With a lovely room, traditional robes provided and beautiful lavish meals which were served in the room in the floor below while my room was made up for sleeping. Breakfast and dinner including a variety of meat, fish and vegetable dishes and even shabu shabu which I'd always wanted to try. After making a friend in town I invited them back to share my dinner with me and the hotel provided extra food and amenities at no extra cost.
I have enormous western feet, which were no match for the petite slippers offered by the hotel. There was also intermittent Wifi which, in the periods spent in my room would have come in handy. However, the staff were lovely and I'm sure - had I bothered them - they would have been happy to assist.
The food was good and delicious. Owner was helpful and speaks English enough . The water of the onsen is of good quality too. And having individual bath is good too
Onsen water was really way too hot. I understand it’s the best but really too hot
Everything! The room, the private onsen was pure bliss and the food was absolutely phenomenal. The family work so hard to provide the best atmosphere and experience. I notified them of my seafood allergy and was catered for.
Nothing. It was all fantastic.
Unequivocally the highlight of anywhere we stayed throughout our month long journey through Japan. Everything was perfect at Ryokan Tamura, everything. Staff that did their best to communicate with us despite a language barrier, a phenomenally beautiful, traditional room, and meals that were the best we ate in all of Japan, hands down. I would like to personally thank all the staff for making our stay in Kusatsu so memorable, and becoming the highlight of our travels through your stunning country. Do not ever hesitate in booking a stay at Ryokan Tamura!
Absolutely nothing.
Its very traditional old house but its clean and well maintance. If u like with traditional looks like, food is amazing
Nothing is perfect for us
The dinner and breakfast are excellent
The staff was very nice and always made an effort to make our stay comfortable. The breakfast and dinner was very tasty and traditional. We would eat in another room while the staff makes our bed or puts it away for the day. The private baths were clean and very comfortable. Most of the time at least one or both private baths were available, so we could always take a bath when we wanted. Right in front of the Ryokan is a new public footbath and around the corner a nice Café and a library. I recommend Ryokan Tamura and would always come back!
The warm welcome from the owners, the traditional style rooms, the private onsen you can use either by yourself or as a couple with no need to reserve it. The delicious Japanese dinner and breakfast in our own private eating room. They even made our beds up for us while we ate so we didn't have to do anything.
I loved all of it this box should not exist
Good
Onsen water too hot. Meals can be better.
We had a great time here. Everyone at Tamura worked hard to provide a first class experience. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Good food, lovely onsen and very welcoming. Thank you.
Nothing
Location and staff
Location was good. There’s a public bath and free face and leg onsen right next door. Walking distance to Yubatake. Like the fact that there’s private and public onsen options too in the hotel for those who are feeling shy. Food prepared was very delicious and good portion!
Not that I can think of.
Charming inn with comfortable beds. Tea and wagashi provided in room upon arrival (the tea is available for you to make yourself). Two private onsen baths available on site - it's a first come first served basis, but we had no issues with that and were able to enjoy a private bath each day. Breakfast was a delicious, traditional meal. If you are not used to Japanese breakfast, you might find it a bit odd, but if you go in with the expectation to have a traditional breakfast, you will not be disappointed!
The provided yubatake was a perfect fit for my husband, but the same size was provided for me (a petite woman) which was way too big so I couldn't walk around outdoors with it! I did not ask for a better size since we were only there for one night, but I probably would have if we were staying longer.
Amazing vegan dinner and breakfast! We weren't sure whether we would miss out being vegan but the food was incredible. The private Onsen was such a treat.
I think it's common to all Ryokan but the futons were quite thin and the pillows a bit uncomfortable.
The food was just amazing, probably the best I had during my stay in Japan. The service is very attentive too. Room was very clean, the classic ryokan layout looked fantastic, the bed was more comfortable than we thought.
Very nice surroundings.
Good food served in the adjoining private room. Nice quiet location. There are a choice on Onsen in the ryokan
the place looks nicer than the photos. the rooms are clean and of good size. no in room shower, have to go down public or private onsen to shower. not an issue as there’s only 8 rooms and 4 onsen
maybe no in-room shower
Lovely staff. Wanted to immerse our self in ryokan and our experience exceeded expectations. The traditional breakfast and dinner were superb. The private onsen was so relaxing!
