Not been able yo smoke in room. . And 10 o'clock check out
The breakfast was ok
Had not been told the leisure facilities were closed. The room smelled of cigarettes. Room was very dated and tired. No main light in Room. Very, very over priced
Room very clean and large great sea view
Location was excellent. Thai food was great. Rooms were really good
Shower was tiny but ok. The reception guy when I was first checking in wasn’t the warmest welcome I’ve had on hotel arrivals.
I've used this hotel a dozen times. I return each time because everything suits my requirements The staff are unfailingly helpful and efficient (Ronnie and Kathryn on reception) and all cleaning staff upstairs
No complaints
A good value for money place to stay. Friendly staff very easy to find would stay again
I stayed in room 351 3rd floor, quite complicated to find, two lifts required to get to get to room at different parts of hotel. In my opinion that would put older customers off staying regularly there.
We love were the hotel is situated. We also love that it resembles the old type of hotel, with the staff and service.
We did find the pillows very hard.
Great location - fabulous bit of coast.
We had a sea view King Suite which was lovely, very spacious. Lovely bath with separate shower cubicle
All really good
Great location
Told that the room would only be serviced after 3 days. When asked for clean towels after 2 days they were dumped on the bed and wet towels left. No top up of teabags, milk etc and toilet rolls.
We stayed at the Grand Hotel to visit my elderly father in law who isn’t very well. The room was difficult to access for my father in law but the staff did everything they could to help us. The room was amazing and I would absolutely stay there again. Thank you to all the staff who made the stay special for our family, including our pet Jack Russell.

Superior double room. Fabulous.
Bed was small / hard - and weirdly there were only 3 pillows!
I go every other week I love the place the swimming pool is amazing as is the jacuzzi
There’s nothing not to like
View. Staff.
Maybe needs updating.
Dog friendly rooms are discussing, I was appalled, there is the burn holes in the sofa with large brown stains on the both cushions, the net curtains had burn holes, the room and corridors leading to the dog friendly rooms smelt of wet dog, there was alcohol lids left under the table off previous customers, I feel like my dog has got fleas from that room … the limescale on the pool’s chrome is on another level I’ve seen nothing like it
Im very comfortable staying at this hotel. Great location and spacious rooms
Nothing negative
Late check in and comfortable

I come to the grand quite often just to get away time to time. And it’s always clean and tidy and cozy. It’s my getaway. However on this occasion there were a lot of black long hair in the bath in the hair dryer on the sink on the floor in the plug holes. This was only in the bathroom. The rest of the room was spotless and the staff was great.
The location, size of room and view were excellent.
The restaurant, as an Asian menu only, was restrictive.
Great location and pool area!
Our room had frosted glass (as no view) so it made the room a bit on the dark side but it was a lovely big room, clean and very comfortable! Weekday check outs are an early 10am, paid an extra £20 for a 12pm check out, which was worth it and didn’t do it until around 11pm the night before at the desk, nice and easy!
Had a coffee for breakfast . . Left everything else . . Standard of food was quite poor. . Lovely pillows in the bedroom . .
Lovely superior room with sea view. Carpet and sofa a bit tired but everywhere was clean and it was nice to have a fridge in the room.
Not enough healthy options at breakfast eg no plain yoghurt only sweetened fruit yoghurts.
Great location friendly staff
Nothing
We really enjoyed breakfast and evening meal Good.
nothing at all. Only noisy neighbours on same floor or above rooms. Only,to be expected though in this environment.
I enjoyed the pool and gym.
Window handle lock in room was loose. Carpet seemed worn and a bit old. Didn't have a very good view from the window. One of the female swimming pool staff was rude and unfriendly.
Hotel was lovely spa was great
Lovely stay
Location
Size of rooms ,value for money ,easy secure parking ,location
Lack of info and clarity about breakfast times and probably the rooms are a little too tired and in need of some attention
Everything from room & staff were very helpful. Including Dawn in the health suite, l had a swollen foot before entering the hotel & found out after going to A&E l had cellulitis 😞
Nothing
I love the hotel and the location. It was easy to get to the places I wanted to visit. The views of the old tram stop, Seaburn camp and both Meik's and Roker lighthouses are lovely. I could not fault my stay with you.
Ideally located
Inconsistent pricing on stays considering I stay every week
Staff, location, swimming pool, amazing location next to the sea

Location of rooms with staircases
Great location and car park
Room was quite warm
Near the sea which was nice. Rooms are big.
Needs total refurb. It’s very dated and used. It was a hot room, window didn’t open properly. Looked like there were bite marks in the bed frame. I wouldn’t say it’s 5 stars.
Location swimming pool room
The bar man, Luke, was fantastic. He went above and beyond to make sure we were accommodated. The man on reception was pleasant and happy to help. The bar food was lovely, as was the breakfast. The facilities were clean and well maintained. The room was a good size, with both a shower and a separate bath.
We were not informed when checking in that there was a buffet of 300 that night, so the food from the Asian restaurant was not available. Or that bar food was only being served until 730pm. The other guests staying had no respect for anyone else staying. The noise from the surrounding rooms was absolutely diabolical. We did not get any sleep due to shouting, talking, other guests being exceptionally loud. Even during daytime hours, the sheer volume of noise was absolutely disgusting. Unfortunately, this completely ruined our stay and means we would be unlikely to return.
Great location and parking and spacious room with sea view
The bathroom could have done with an upgrade and the breakfast wasn’t great
Thr location was ideal and couldn't be in a better place.Friendly staff and a nice late check out was great for us
The car parking is very tight. The car parking people sent me a letter trying to penalise me even though I didn't out stay my time.
It was a lovely hotel

The hotel was so very clean, the room had a seaview and the bed was very comfortable. The food in the restaurant was well cooked, delicious, plenty of it and great value for money. The staff were very pleasant and friendly. We enjoyed our stay very much.
The tap in the bathroom sink was very powerful!
Stayed before, good as usual.

Staff are absolutely shocking and nowhere near a 4 star hotel service. Had a junior suite booked and was travelling with a pup. On arrival I was told I can't stay in the suite because it's a room dedicated for weddings and they only have specific rooms where you can stay with the dog. Their pet policy only says pets are allowed on request. There's no mention about specific rooms only stay. I had made the booking via Booking.com and had selected travelling with pet and was able to book the suite. On arrival I was told I can't stay in that room. I cancelled the booking as soon as I walked out and was told by receptionist they will honour the full refund. I've been trying to contact them and get a follow up on this and they have been absolutely shocking. Despite there being an active cancellation request, I just got a message to say....refer to booking.com. This is after speaking to 3 different members of staff all who said they will follow up with this and was told at the end it will be dealt with by the manager when they come into work tomorrow morning. Attached pic with booking.com pending cancellation request and hotels reply to refer to booking.com Zero stars for customer service, would avoid by all cost.
Good location, lots of car parking, comfortable and clean.
Location, size of room, size of tv and bed
The bed base and headboard were a bit tatty Toilet flush still poor, it was like that last few times I stayed.
Always good, stayed many times. Standard double, nice size, big bath, comfy bed, pool and basic gym, nice looking inside and friendly staff
Nothing
On site Resident parking included in the price, no extra charge. Fantastic 1st floor large room with sea view. Plenty of wardrobe/drawer space for clothes, iron& full size ironing board & great tea/coffee facilities. Excellent value for money
Nothing to dislike
Lovely sea view room, clean and tidy
Other guests, loud , chavs being sick
I like the building and its location, but unfortunately, the unfriendly and unwelcoming attitude of the staff negatively affected my overall experience and overshadowed the positive aspects of my stay.
Made to feel unwelcome My stay at the Grand Hotel Sunderland was extremely disappointing, particularly because of the way I was treated as a guest. From the moment I arrived, I did not feel welcomed. There was no friendly greeting, no smile and no basic “welcome” — just a very cold and indifferent attitude. I was not even offered breakfast or given any information about it. Then I entered my room and found a used tissue left on the bed. I took a photograph and showed it to reception. I was told that it would be sorted. Instead, a man who normally works in the restaurant came to my room with clean bed linen and told me that, if I wanted, I could change the bed myself. I had just driven for four hours after finishing a night shift. I was exhausted and certainly did not expect to have to change my own bed after paying to stay in a hotel. I was told that the cleaner had probably been in a hurry and had forgotten to remove the tissue. Mistakes happen, but leaving used rubbish on a clean bed is simply unacceptable. What made the situation worse was the way it was dealt with afterwards. The restaurant experience was no better. Again, I felt there was a noticeable lack of friendliness towards me. When my meal arrived, I was given only a knife and fork, while other guests were provided with trays containing napkins, sauces, salt and other items. I felt unwanted and uncomfortable, as though I was somehow in the wrong place. Because of this, I chose to have my breakfast at a nearby shop and ate my second dinner outside the hotel rather than return to the restaurant. I cannot say what was behind the way I was treated. I had a strong impression that these people totally forgot what they are paid for - for serving people, not for judging or liking or disliking or so on. Every paying guest deserves the same basic courtesy, respect and standard of service. The location is beautiful, but a good location does not compensate for poor hospitality.
Tolle Zimmer mit Meerblick.. Toll es Bad. Schön groß. Schwimmbad überschaubar aber okay
Keine Minibar/minikühlsxhrank im Zimmer mehr.
We always stay here when visiting family. The location is amazing, pool always goes down well with two kids. The bar food and staff are always great!
Our room was very very cold, we were provided with two electric heaters but considering the size of the room didn’t let out sufficient heat. Also we paid £40 for breakfast as an added extra (2x adults and 2x Children) but as no one told us breakfast finished at 9am we missed it. I have never stayed anywhere that breakfast is finished by 9 especially when checkout isn’t until 11.
Lovely friendly staff, hotel nipping clean, good food, brilliant views. The loveliest staircase
Couldn't find anything that needed inprovement except maybe the carpet on the second staircase was a little threadbare but it no way spoilt our stay

Lovely big room, very clean, comfortable, good view of the sea. Well designed, spacious bathroom Breakfast was good. Excellent location
Servicing of room had to be requested. Expected it to be done unless we opted out at the Grand Hotel. At breakfast tea and coffee was not freshly made. Expected a coffee machine and selection of tea bags. Had to ask for Earl Grey tea and was given tea bags from the kitchen but a selection was not freely available. To use the pool facility involved a complicated procedure, not properly explained. The fire alarm went off twice, once in the middle of the night. There was no information for the poor guests standing outside in their night clothes wondering when they would be able to go back in as evidently there was no fire. The staff did not explain to guests procedures nor apologise for the inconvenience. No working internal phones to use to contact reception. The hotel seemed to operate with a skeleton staff, who had to work very hard to keep guests happy.
Leisure facilities, room 102 ( we have stayed in it previously and requested it again).
Pillows were a little harder than we ar used to, and only three on a double bed.
Met our expectation and more. the rooms were spacious and clean with easy check in and good facilities.

Food was excellent especially the evening meals
The room had a few marks on the carpet and headboard was peeling
The Grand Hotel Sunderland is a lovely hotel with great leisure facilities. Friendly staff, comfortable, clean rooms in a great location on the sea front handy for a good selection of Indian & Italian restaurants.
There wasn't anything we didn't like
Location was good
Rooms very tired and walls dirty
The location and pool
Great location and very clean
Location
Location is good.
Hotel is a little ‘run down’. Some staff are quite rude. I booked four nights half board. First night in the restaurant I was told I could NOT order off the restaurant menu, but half board consisted of only a main course from the bar menu! I think the ‘waiter’ was called Tony. He had earlier come to our room to fix our TV and I thought he was a maintenance man. We duly ordered a main course from the very limited bar menu. Second night chose to eat at a local restaurant due to the limited choices on the bar menu. Third night went into the restaurant for convenience and the lovely waiter that night told me I could order a starter, main and pudding from the restaurant’s Asian menu. I queried this and he insisted he was correct.
Superb value for money Great restaurant Smart TV with easy to use You Tube button
nothing really.
Good location friendly staff comfy bed
View from room poor and some rubbish outside on the roof. Overall though good value for money though.
Good sized room
Headboard was all scuffed (room 116 i think)
It was two single beds together so it was bigger than a double

The price was good, we enjoyed having a pool in the hotel. The breakfast was fresh and a good selection. The hotel smelled clean and the bedding was fresh.
The first night we did not sleep well due to lots of noise from another guests room until 03:40, then the noise of the person in the next room snoring made us realise the rooms are not very soundproof. The second night we were unable to use the accessible parking as they were being used by a wedding party guest, the next morning my husband had to ask a person to vacate the space as they had no blue badge. Extra blankets would have been good and the pillows could be replaced as they smelled like body oils. Beds were very hard, which was fine once we were tired enough.
Size of the suite. Free car park
Lack of staff professionalism on reception. Bar staff grumpy and didn’t want to serve. Breakfast staff greeted us with cleaning products in hand. Why would any hotel finish breakfast at 9? Breakfast quality poor and lack of fresh fruit variety, also exposed, not covered over. Why would you have a dining table for 4 in the window of a 2 person suite? Surely better to have 2 lovely arm chairs to enjoy the view? Don’t say it’s your eco policy; you want to cut the cleaning bills by not having anyone tidy the bedroom for our 3night stay.
Location
A small snag.... Bed head board is Faux leather... it is flaking. Huge crack in tiles behind loo. In tea and coffee facilities there are no options for non dairy milk.
Stay there all the time n

This hotel is ideally located and I have stayed here repeatedly over the past months
Due to the summer the price has risen dramatically which is expected but I will return when the summer prices have dripped a little ..hopefully

Went with my son for a weekend in Sunderland to attend a couple of events. Room was great and had a nice view of the sea. Location was ideal for walks along the seafront and is close to transport to the city centre. We enjoyed the pool and the staff were helpful. Very clean. Would return if we're in the area again. Great value.
Only a minor thing but there wasn't a kettle or tea and coffee in the room. Not a big deal but would have been nice.
Everything the room was fantastic and spacious super comfortable like a home from home

Lovely hotel right by the seaside and close to the pier. Clean, friendly staff, and a great bonus having a pool and sauna. Would definitely recommend! 😊
The location
We had a ground floor room, With zero noise and it also had a seating area. Shower and a separate bath was a bonus.
Lovely sea view
Poor wi-fi
Large room Bed v comfortable Big tv Bath
No fridge. Stored me some food in Reception fridge. Plastic cups, no glasses.
We did a family stay here in Summer. The property is in a great location, very close to beach, shops, fair, restaurants, aquarium and outdoor pool. Its got basic facilities, which kids would find sufficient.
Although reviews on Booking.com are generally positive, these were balanced with those on Google and Tripadvisor and criticisms that we read beforehand, were found to be valid. The facilities are very basic, and there are a few missing home comforts/necessities: no hand towel, or hand soap (which was worrying as to what that said about cleanliness), no table lamp, limited desktop space, TV had freeview but only some are smart Tvs, TV didnt always work as expected, the blackout curtains didnt cover the windows, the pull lights were snapped so my kids couldnt reach the string, the floors are marked and stained, no extra pillows, wifi was very poor and had to connect via hotspot for most of the stay, there wasnt often staff on reception, security was lax in terms of people having access to the building, and I’m sad to agree that there was indeed a strong smell of cigarette smoke in the building every day when leaving our room. Cleanliness wasnt up to scratch, and crumbs etc were noticed in the beds, in the drawers and around the kettle.
The staff were very friendly, the swimming pool and other facilities were very good, but I think the gym could be updated but again it was satisfactory. This hotel drink and food were very good with a good range of choice. I have already booked the same room again for December 2026 and will continue coming to the grand hotel for the see able future. The area at seaburn is really good no matter your age. I like both old style and new style hotels. The grand hotel, i think offers both.. The fact the you dont pay for parking is a real bonus, and you feel the hotel offers security for both yourself and vehicle.
The only thing I did not like is that dogs are allowed in the bar without being muzelled. This is not always safe for customers. Other than that it is a great place to stay!
