staff friendly and obliging great location very comfortable beds
the bathroom was not big enough! our view was dreadful--- opened the curtains and our view was another roof top with equipment. at breakfast the other 5 meals were delivered and mine was forgotten and by the time I got my meal, the others were long finished.
Marina Ambrose at the front desk is a gem. She was unfailingly helpful.
The room AC was very noisy and interfered with sleep. The chairs in the breakfast room were vey uncomfortable. It was like pulling teeth to get heavy cream. The room cleaners had NO English
Great location and many aspects of the remodel were very nice.
We had a wedding block and several guests had a terrible time with the air conditioning in their rooms. The weather was warm, but a hotel of this nature and cost should have an air conditioning system that works flawlessly. One of the elevators was not in service… my first room had a portable air conditioning system installed in the room, which kept us up all night. We were able to move to another room, but I was shocked that the staff would put a parent of the bride in a room with a portable air conditioner! Moving to another room was not what I wanted to be doing on the morning of such a significant day in our lives.
Absolutely nothing.
It was a terrible experience from start to finish. Did not even stay the night. Had to find a valet person upon arrival; ridiculous conquest since they make you pay extra for them to park your car. We waited almost an hour to check in in a hot lobby. When I brought up my dissatisfaction to the front desk lady about the wait and the valet charge, she shrugged her shoulders and didn't care. I booked a 2 queen bed SUITE with a pullout bed. We opened the room door to a 1 bed "junior suite" as they called it. No couch. No second bed. Not what I booked. Not happy. They want luxury rates for a Holiday Inn experience. Not OK!!! Already aggravated about the lobby situation, and then this?! We went right back downstairs to complain. The line still snaking around the hot lobby to the door. When I got the incompetent desk lady's attention I told her what had happened and her response was, "we gave you what was available. Its a junior suite." I said, no that's not what I booked OVER A MONTH AGO! Don't tell me that that is "what you had available." This was not a last minute reservation! Needless to say, after much back and forth, we cancelled and left. It should be no surprise what I had to do next...you guessed it...GO FIND A VALET PERSON AGAIN. The only manager in sight was the Food and Beverage and he was just as incompetent as the rest of them. When I asked for help with the valet he proceeded to point me to their desk. I said I know where the valet desk is...I NEED A VALET!! It was an awful experience all around; OH and not to mention that the air conditioner was broken in 90% of the hotel, INCLUDING MOST OF THE ROOMS..DURING A HEATWAVE! Just renovated AND celebrating their 100th year in business. Total embarrassment. Total failure. DO NOT waste your time and money at this DUMP! Oh and not to mention, everyone else in the hotel and lobby was complaining about the exact same things. Go read the other reviews.
Love this classic hotel. Great location, great views, great service. Best in Newport
Do yourself a favor and stay at the Brenton. The hotel management should be ashamed that we were checked in to a room in such bad condition. The manager Cassie knowingly checked us in to a room with no working air conditioning, a clogged tiny sink - with a shelf over it which made it impossible to brush your teeth. ( see photo)We waited for 24 hours before they came to fix the air conditioner, we were on our way to the wedding we were in town for and we were almost late since we had to get ready with 2 service technicians in our room. When we got back it was still not fixed, we had to use a dusty old box fan which is what they sent up to our room. When we checked out we were told the room was being decommissioned, which was no surprise, it should have been before we were checked in. I mistakenly left a gold chain in the safe , I called 3 times each time the told me they would check and call me back but no one ever did . The bell hops were great, but the service at the front desk is terrible. I did not get any sleep for the 2 nights I stayed. If I could give this hotel 0 stars I would !!
The recent renovations are certainly a nice improvement, but the air conditioning at this old hotel has been terrible. Our room was 85 degrees last night, making for a miserable experience. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any viable solution. The front desk was unhelpful.
Checked in today (July 3rd) at 12:30 during the middle of the heat wave. AC wasn’t working and the room was 85 degrees. Called front desk and they said they would fix it. Came back from lunch, room was still 85. Front desks topped answering the phone so went in person multiple times to request a fix. Eventually had to leave the hotel with my 8 month old baby, who was red faced and screaming. Was told hotel would call me when it was fixed. No call by 5:30 pm so I keep trying to call the front desk. The number on the website goes to sales desk voicemail. I drive back to the hotel to see a 20-person deep front desk line. Befriend others in the lobby whose AC hadn’t been working since the night before. Realize the hotel was completely disingenuous about this being a quick fix as the lobby is filled with dozens of people whose rooms don’t have AC on one of the worst heatwaves in recent history. I had to wait another hour for the “room director” to come talk to me and give me the correct front desk number so Expedia can contact the hotel for my refund. Completely disgusted by the way this was handled.
Terrible experience here, and I’m only on night 1 of 3. Currently looking for other hotels in Newport to pack up and move. I’ve had a king room booked since February, and a few weeks back I called to make it a suite with a king bed and pullout coach because my 13 year old son was joining us now. They said “all set - we made the change”. Upon arrival, come to find out they didn’t make the change and so we are crammed in a room with a cot for my son. I’m not even against cots in general, but you can’t even walk anywhere in the room with it in here, and the cot smells like mildew. That’s not even the worst part - the AC went out today and the room is 78 degrees. The pool had no towels (I had to go to the front desk to request some), the pool railing to get into the pool was broken, the paint on the ceiling is chipping and filling off, the towel in my room was dirty, the speakers upstairs at the Cap Club were burned out and half the drinks on the menu weren’t available because of some machine that was broken. It’s crazy that they can charge ppl $800 + a night for this. I come to Newport every 4th and was excited to try this hotel but I will never be back - and I would NOT recommend this to anyone else. I wish I had read some of the other reviews before coming because I would have thought twice before booking. Save your money - or if you are looking for something high end…try something else Forty One North is nice, Goat Island, the Marriott, Bretton….literally anything is better than what we have experienced here. Seems like they are just here to take people’s money and no one is actually managing the building or customer experience.
Just returned home after finishing our holiday at the Hotel Viking. We were expecting great things from this newly refurbished hotel but were so disappointed. On entering for the first time the reception area was chaotic to say the least. The whole weekend was full of wedding parties and you had to fight your way through to get to the door on numerous occasions. The receptionist asked us on arrival if we had come for a wedding. When we said no she said ‘good’. We were then told our room wasn’t ready but was given another room instead. To say this was small was an understatement. There was hardly any room to get changed and we had to squeeze past each other every time we moved anywhere. On top of that half the lights and plugs didn’t work so we had to settle for one light for the whole room which was quite dark. We reported this on the day we arrived but nothing was done for the whole time we were there. The air conditioning was so loud we had to turn it off during the night which left the room too hot. On checking out I mentioned all the above and was offered a small refund only then to be charged almost $1000 for a room that had already been paid for by our travel agent. Overall I felt that we were being put behind the needs of all the wedding party guests. This room was reserved last year so I didn’t expect to be put in what could be considered an oversized cupboard, Would not recommend this hotel to anyone and our agent has been informed. It is certainly not the hotel this portrays to be.
Good location. Delicious breakfast. Parking valets were great.
Impossible to reach the front desk. No in-room dining available even though advertised.
went for 45th aniversary. I got married at the Viking and worked there in college so there was a connection.Room was nice came back after dinner a horror show. The a/c was a floor model vented out the window. The TV had to be turned on to 33 to get above the noise. Had to yank the plug out of the wall to shut it as it kept waking us up. The next day when they asked how my night was and I told them the front desk said yea you got one of the rooms with the portible AC you should have called and we would have moved you. Then went to restaurant and asked the hostess if they had egg whites she said I don't know I could go and find out. Not the right answer. The windows when you got off the elevator were filthy. We then went to check out. I left cash for housekeeper. Needed to tip valet. I asked front desk for change and was told we are a cashless hotel ask the valet. No ATM? I said no cash as a courtesy to guests and she looked at me like I had 10 heads I then went to valet who had no money. We did tip him on way in so guess what he lost. As a retired head of a hospitality academy they all would have flunked my class. I currently work for another hotel and know this is not proper way to deal with people in this day and age. Do not go there and waste your money or time they don't care. There are many other hotels in Newport,
Hotel Viking photographs well, and the lobby and bars are genuinely beautiful. Unfortunately, the renovation felt surface-level. Once you get past the common areas, the rooms do not feel like a true 4-star hotel. My room felt unfinished and poorly maintained. The TV setup had wires strewn around it in a way that looked more like a college apartment than a luxury hotel charging premium rates. On top of that, the TV was not even connected to the internet. I asked the front desk to have it connected, but no one resolved it, and I eventually had to figure it out myself. There was no minibar, no sense of polish, and the room simply did not match the image the hotel presents online. The property also felt like it was not truly ready for guests. The elevator closest to my room opened into what appeared to be an active construction area, which I had to walk through just to get to the gym. That is not an acceptable guest experience at a hotel charging luxury rates. Service was lackadaisical throughout the stay. I called three separate times asking for a steamer, and it never arrived. At this price point, basic requests should not require repeated follow-up, let alone go completely unresolved. The worst part was the billing. After my stay, the hotel charged me an extra roughly $1,000. I then had to spend weeks chasing them through multiple calls and an email, before finally getting the refund I was owed. That is completely unacceptable for any hotel, let alone one marketing itself as a high-end property. Overall, the experience felt like a polished façade: pretty public spaces, but rooms and service that do not live up to the price or rating. Between the unfinished-feeling room, the poor TV setup, weak service, the active construction-area access issue, and the extra $1,000 charge that took weeks of follow-up to resolve, I would not recommend Hotel Viking.
Just spent three nights at Hotel Viking. I did not know anything about the hotel before staying there. I thought it was a wonderful place to stay. Granted it was built 100 years ago so the rooms are not sized by today’s standards but furnishings were new, tasteful and felt upscale. The hotel is beautiful having just completed an extensive restoration. Everything is new but retains the historic nature of the original hotel. Location is great and within walking distance of restaurants and shopping. Staff was courteous and attentive. Would stay there again!
This is a beautiful hotel with good restaurant and coffee shop amenities. The beds are very comfortable. A couple of things were annoying. 1- the shower water was tepid at best. 2- there was no vanity area for a woman to do makeup. 3- the AC unit was extremely loud. A 1977 window unit would have been quieter. I am in the construction business and I know this hotel was recently renovated and I can’t understand why this wasn’t attended to. 4- our room 308 was nestled between maintenance shops and the stairwell. The walls seemed paper thin and whatever maintenance workers were there were very noisy. Some room for improvement but a beautiful place in a beautiful town.
Pros:Remodel looks nice, with a nice comfy bed. Nice shower Cons: AC issues in 2 different rooms, some outlets and lamps did not work. Outlets on the baseboard and kuerig wouldn’t reach it. Small rooms. I know its an old building but not comfortable for extended time Front desk ladies nice, no help at arrival door. Security guard very unpleasant
Went for Memorial Day weekend and overall had a good time with one really big question: why did the bar close down at 9:30 on Sunday of a major holiday weekend when Monday is a day off? We got there at 9:40 only to be informed they had already called last call, so we couldn't get a seat. Other hotel guests came in a few minutes after us (we were seated in the lobby at this point so witnessed this) and were similarly rebuffed. Then right around 10:00 a large group of hotel guests came in and were very disappointed that they couldn't get a drink. The bar staff must have wanted to leave after a long weekend - they said "we called last call" like that was legally binding in Rhode Island (it is not legally binding until the state-mandated last call which is much later). Again, it was 9:40 on a holiday weekend. My wife and I had been looking forward all day to having some drinks and playing backgammon in the bar, we had confirmed with the front desk what time the bar was open until, but apparently that was a mistake. I hope they fix this, because the bar is physically gorgeous, the drinks were admittedly good (when we had some the previous day), and the finger foods were great. Viking Hotel truly is quite a good hotel, and I recommend it - just careful when you try to get a drink! The refurbishment they recently did was well done - rooms are small but I liked our suite, and other than that one time in the bar, service was fantastic. The front door staff/valets were great, as were the ladies behind the front desk and housekeeping. The refurbished courtyard was fun, our young daughters liked it, and the indoor pool was useful given the rainy weekend (pool temp was COLD but there was a hot tub). Fitness center was better-than-expected.
Incredible experience dining at the hotel! Yurii went above and beyond! Our server I believe was Stephanie was so attentive, and the food was incredible Our daughter is getting married this weekend at the Rosecliff and we made that our first stop did not disappoint!
My daughter (14), mother, and I stayed at Hotel Viking Newport for a long weekend in May. The renovations to this historic hotel are beautiful! I most enjoyed the very soft beds and good-sized accommodations of our double-queen room. Everything is new and very clean. We had maid service each day and they took care to make our room perfect and comfortable. We enjoyed the bar area in the hotel for small bites and drinks in the evenings. The concierge was very helpful in setting up dinner reservations and helping us with any questions we had. Unfortunately, we had wet weather all weekend long, so we did not walk as much as we wanted. The final day was sunny, so I walked to Thames and around town - the hotel is a perfect locations for walkers! Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Newport!
shower/bed
no tv; no phone; construction; nothing open or avail; too many things to list; no security; property was open at all hours and could be breached at any time
Recently was there after their 2026 renovation. Not impressed with the staff. No place to get a bottle of water or a place for evening coffee. Everything looked “sterile”. No appearance to a return to grandeur. It was “modernized”. You have to dodge painters and employees loitering in hallways. If they weren’t ready to provide 100% service, they should have waited. The myriad of add on charges were shocking.
Unnecessary use of plastic
The bed and pillows were comfortable. Nice location great breakfast in dining room.
Barhroom is terrible! Sink across hall from toilet. Toilet room very small. Toilet low with small seat. Door jammed closed to leave room and we had a hard time getting out.
Trop cher
For the amount of money I paid for two days I thought it should have been updated. Taking the elevator to the 3rd floor and having to then go down the stairs with suitcases was not a delight for me. The hot tub was extremely hot almost burning your body. It also had almost zero pressure from the jets. My television would not shut off, we had to unplug the actual plug for it to turn off, then it wouldn’t turn on. I was very unimpressed by this hotel and will not be staying here again and will definitely NOT recommend it to anyone.
The location was great.
The condition of the bathroom was appalling. It looked like a five year old had painted the bathroom.
Location
Very tinny& old room
Never had the breakfast. The English tea was disapointing. I've been to other much better. Bread was dry, cucumbers extremely thin & poor service.
Alot
Very polite and respectful staff. Clean and well maintained property.
Everything was great
This hotel was typical for what we were expecting. we had a lower room that faced the courtyard. Accommodations were fine, but the price was high for fourth of July. There was a pig roast for the fourth, but it was not clear if it was included. The rooftop bar was open for drinks to view fireworks, but this was ticketed and ended up being cancelled due to thunderstorms.
Pool was cold, hot tub broken, no robe or slippers. Expensive hotel seems to cater to weddings and corporate meetings much more than tourists.
Great location but sections of the hotel are really hot. My room got up to 88 degrees one day… they moved me to a cooler room at 3:00 in the morning. The tv only worked half the time; they did fix it at one point only for it to go out again. May be due to the age of the building? Great staff…building needs work, tho.
great location, great coffee, beautiful building, great gym
A/C didn’t work, very hot and stuffy at night, no air circulation, tried calling the front desk twice at 10:30pm but no one picked up.
The hotel really deserves 3.5 stars but I was happy to round up. After reading some really terrible recent reviews I was close to canceling my reservation. I’m glad I didn’t. The hotel is charming and old fashioned, we found all of the staff friendly and had good sleeps in our comfy bed. Its central location means it’s walkable to almost all of the cites and restaurants. We had lovely messages at the spa and enjoyed morning coffee from the market in the lobby. Yes, the hotel is old and could use a refresher. My husband couldn’t get hot water in the shower at the spa. Our room shower took a long time to drain. The hot tub by the pool is more of a bath with no jets. We didn’t need the air conditioner but the heating system made some strange noises, nothing to keep us awake though. Perhaps if I had paid north of $500 a night I would have been upset too but I got a better rate. I came with low expectations and was happily surprised
Had the worst experience at this hotel. We were greeted with a young gentleman who stared "this place is closing in a month for a full renovation" which didn't make me feel good about what we would be seeing. Upon checking in we were told there was no concierge to help us with planning mansion tours. In the elevator the bellhop stated "this elevator scares me" (great). Our room was nothing great upon entering. However, after closer inspection we noticed black mold in the shower and dust in the open heating system. When we went to bed I tried to call down for extra pillows and blankets. No answer. I had to go down and was told they would "try" to get some. The pull out sofa was awful and had coils popping out. The next morning we explained our situation to the manager. He gave us 25 percent off and let us out of the next night. Then he told us it was his last day. We moved to the Vanderbilt which was almost the same money and had a wonderful time.
We were excited to stay at the hotel, but would never return. Our room was tired & old, with a tiny bathroom that you couldn’t swing a cat in. The coffee machine didn’t work, neither did most of the power outlets in the room. When we complained we got a shrug and and “we’ll fix it” but they never did over our 3 night stay. The breakfast was good and most of the waiting staff were great - but front desk were rude, slow and made us feel like we were an inconvenience. This was one of the worst hotel experiences I’ve had. DO NOT RECOMMEND!
My husband and I came to celebrate our anniversary The location is perfect, and it’s our third time staying here. . We were warmly greeted by Christy. She is so sweet and courteous. Our suite was beautiful. Aside from location and amenities, service is most important to us. We had the most contact with Christy and she needs to be cloned. She is wonderful. We also dealt with Emily and she was also very courteous and went above and beyond. I’m glad we also got to meet Brian, the front desk manager who truly appreciates his guests and wants them to have a great experience, and we did! We look forward to returning after the renovation.
The only thing I missed the two times I’ve stayed at the Viking is to be able to open de windows, I find a problem the air system.
Location was excellent
The rooms are extremely small
Nice hotel, located well, only a short distance to the waterfront, room was nice, we had dinner there which was fine, also breakfast The only downside was the staff Having stayed in hotels all over the world when you check in or check out it is always nice if the front desk recognizes you / makes eye contact / asks if you had a pleasant stay. Unfortunately this did not take place at this hotel This has a negative impact on your overall view of the hotel Shame because it costs nothing to say hello or goodbye
Iconic hotel near everything. The staff were great. Rooms are comfortable. Needs updating. Nice bar area. Great hotel.
Worst hotel I’ve ever stayed firstly wrong room then the next room they gave us no working toilet total disaster
Location perfect , rooms need an update of charging those prices Bar area not great but staff and location fabulous
Needs renovation badly. Beautiful exterior but as you walk in, it looks to be a cheap renovation trying to make it modern but not succeeding. Our room was lovely. Our bathroom on the other hand was less than lovely. The tub was all torn up the tile horrible. It looks like they attempted to tile it at some point. There were cracks in the floor and mismatch tiles. I would not expect this for $500 a night.
Nice location and property
Room was tiny at best, toilet kept running, shower would only be cold or hot and there was no directions to operate it. Staff didn't know how to use the computer and charged my card for the room twice and it was already paid for prior. Awful experience.
Beautiful historic hotel in a quiet but convenient location in Newport. Most of the hotel and rooms have been updated and are very nice but the bathrooms still need work. Very old style bathtub/shower and tile that could easily be replaced to keep up with everything else. Other than that, it's a very nice stay.
Location
Old facility Uncomfortable furniture
Historic significance and location
Some steps to navigate to room
$500/night for a room with a rattling a/c, a bathroom so small that you had to stand between the toilet and tub to close the door. The tub and tile on the wall were stained. Above the door were two black marks that looked like mold. The wall behind the door was stained. The mirror hanging on the door was peeling. And, the door was damaged at the bottom. Also, nothing against dog friendly hotels, but when you see clumps of dog hair on and around the lobby furniture, something needs to be done. We made our concerns known to the staff and all they said was they could put us in another room. We declined because we believed they all were the same. Needless to say, we won't be booking any more future getaways at the Hotel Viking.
Great location, restaurant, bar and staff
Tired and dingy rooms. Poor housekeeping, run down bathroom and constantly breaking old ac unit.
The staff was very helpful and friendly. The food in the resturant was superb. The town trolley stops on the hotel corner. There is a cute coffee, pastry, sanwich cafe across the street. The rooms are fairly small and the furniture a little worn. All in all, a great 3 days.
Run down rooms, air conditioning not working almost $600 for an after 4:00 check-in. Better to Stay 1/2 mile down the road in Middleton at the Marriott residence inn!
Beware!!!! Horrible - no room service- sinks didnt drain- tv wont shut off! Better a motel!!! The bed was comfortable- LOnG walk to room-
The best location in all of Newport. A beautiful walk to the shops on Bellevue Ave and Thames Street. The hotel is luxurious and the most comfortable beds.
The hotel was clean and perfect location! We enjoyed our stay and would come back.
Wonderful staff. Beautiful room. Small bathroom/shower but Hurt our stay. Hope to go back next year after renovation
Hotel Viking completely exceeded my expectations. From the warm welcome by the valet to every detail of my stay, the experience was truly five-star. My room was spotless and full of charm, and the room service was absolutely delicious. I can’t wait to return!
historical setting- setting was perfecdt
So many things wrong with this hotel: - Staff: The staff are exceptionally unfriendly. No one smiles at you IF they make eye contact. When we approached the front desk, the person just stared at us, never saying “good morning/afternoon.” We would walk by housekeeping in the hall, smile and say hello and all they would do is just stare at us. No one wears a name tag, and there is clearly not a dress code, so we didn’t know when we were talking to a staff member or who that staff member was. I had to ask what Ragu’s name was when he was exceptionally rude to us at the front desk during check in. I had to deal with 3 staff upon checkout and the only person wearing a name badge was the manager Bryan. There was one instance when someone from the hotel knocked on our door. When we answered, she spoke to us in Spanish. I still don’t know what she wanted, as she kept saying the same thing over and over in Spanish. - Actual hotel: Our room was so old and outdated. The blinds were metal and rusted. The air conditioner was crazy loud and woke us up constantly throughout the night. The bathroom shelves were a strong breeze away from collapsing, and the bathroom drawer fell out when we attempted to use it. The shower was stunningly disgusting…we felt we needed to wear flip flops in order not to catch something. Positive: The only, and I mean only, positive was the gym. It’s large and well appointed. There are so many Inns and Hotels in Newport that it makes absolutely no sense to stay at the Viking. When I checked us out, they attempted to charge me an additional $500 when I had already paid. When I called them out, radio silence. No one could explain the charge. Simply a disgusting experience. Our advice is to stay somewhere else!
My husband and I travel frequently, which is why I contribute often to this platform. We recently stayed at the Viking Hotel in Newport, RI, drawn by its strong online reviews and convenient downtown location. Unfortunately, at $700 per night, our experience was deeply disappointing. Upon check-in, we were assigned Room 2023. The room felt dark and gloomy. The bathroom fan was caked with dust, and the area around the toilet appeared to have dried urine stains. My husband later admitted he also noticed a vomit odor upon arrival, though he didn’t mention it right away. Before heading to dinner, I requested that the front desk have the vent and bathroom floor cleaned. While the vent was addressed, the floor still looked discolored—likely stained—and the room itself retained a strong vomit smell. At that point, we called down and were moved to Room 3023. This was a noticeable improvement, and we felt more comfortable. However, even here the bathroom had water damage in the corner and signs of black mold. By then, we were exhausted from the back-and-forth and chose not to raise the issue again, preferring to salvage what little time we had for a getaway without our four children. Sadly, based on this experience, I cannot recommend the Viking Hotel. As a top-tier Hyatt member, I regret not booking the Attwater instead.
This 99-year-old needs to refresh its rooms and provide more room amenities and soundproofing to make it five star. Hallway noise was significant. Food was excellent.
My partner and I have 350+ hotel stays between us and agree this was in the bottom 10% The suite was quite warm on our arrival (nearly 80 degrees) and soon after turning on the remarkably loud air conditioners in both rooms, they began to cycle ON/OFF every few minutes, with each cycle marked by extremely loud banging sounds (like closing of heavy metal doors!!). When we turned on the bedroom TV to try to drown out the noise, we discovered that this TV didn’t work. It was late so we put in our ear buds and tried to get some sleep. Turns out the ear buds were no match for the air conditioners, so we turned them off, opting to sleep hot vs not at all. In the morning, we opened the blinds only to discover that our second floor suite was at eye level with workers on the roof. They saw us and placed a bit of insulation over the widow (in an attempt to give us some privacy or protect us from their construction debris?). We let management know and then went about our day in Newport. On our return, it was clear someone had been in our room as we had flies in the room that weren’t there when we had left in the morning. Management called to say that they had sent someone to the room to work on the air conditioners, but we confirmed they were no better. We tried to make it through the second night by only having the sitting room AC unit on but even this frustrated sleep. In the morning we checked out and told management of the issues. They were sympathetic and shared that the entire hotel will soon be closed for 6 months for renovations! In recognition of the unpleasantries we encountered, they did refund the resort fee (that we hadn’t realize was a an additional $100 add-on to the room charges!). Had we known that the renovation was imminent, we would never have booked a pricy suite at a hotel so in need of maintenance and renovation.
Old and needs major renovation
The staff was excellent. Especially the wait staff for the rooftop bar. However, for $800 / night, I expect more. First, we were put in basement level rooms with no view whatsoever. The AC was either full on or off which made it either freezing or hot with no in between. Our friends in another room had no AC the 4 nights we stayed. The sliding bathroom door in our room was very heavy and tight, it was incredibly hard to open or close. My wife couldn't shut the door if I wasn't there as she couldn't open the door once closed. We did not plan to use the spa but went to see what it was like. There was a film over the top of the water and it was very murky, I wouldn't dare to put my hand in it. I have stayed in better places in Newport for much less. I would visit the rooftop bar, but will never stay there again.
I love everything about this hotel: the location, the aesthetic, the staff—everything was perfect! I will definitely be back.
We’ve stayed at the hotel before and had a great experience. This trip was different. The room was expensive, we had a view of the roof and AC units. The service was poor at times from no help with bags on arrival to multiple requests for towels and no room service one day. May be my last stay at this hotel
This property is due for a remodel. Apparently this is coming up soon. Although the room was clean it was very old. Not very well thought out.... No garbage in the bathroom and a fan that turns on with the light switch in the separate bathtub shower / toilet room. It was extremely loud and annoying especially going to the bathroom in the middle of the night when someone else is sleeping. The closet space for clothing to hang was extremely small and not very usable. Also when we came into the room one of the ceiling tiles was removed and you could see the pipes in the walls. The coffee maker leaked water all over the dresser counter.... Had to remove the glass top off the vanity to clean it all up. So overall we were not very impressed. We also had to call down several times to get some extra coffee sent up. When we were in the bar area ordering food a huge beetle type bug crawled across the countertop..... Not sure exactly what it was....?? Great location and very walkable area. It is about 10 minutes down to the Newport Marina. I am not sure we would stay here again.. maybe after the remodel we would give it another chance but NOT LIKELY LOL.
Historic building in a convenient location. $45 a day valet parking, city is easily walkable and there is free bus service. The restaurant and bar are reasonably priced considering the location. Our dinners were excellent, made more so by our waitress. She was personable, friendly and efficient. She seemed to really enjoy her job, so much so that when she saw us leave to take a walk the next morning, she came out to wave to us! Now for the not so good things. As others have said, the air conditioning is extremely noisy, causing interrupted sleep. The bathroom is unusual to say the least. I could not spit toothpaste in the sink without banging my head on the mirror. Perhaps if the toilet was higher, I could have sat there to brush my teeth, wash my face. There is only one hook for towels. If you turn on the light in the bathroom during the night, the glass pane allows the light to shine on the bed.
Staff was very friendly and hotel location was short walk to most shops and restaurants. Older hotel so condition of a few things is dated.
great location, great atmosphere. They could do a better job keeping part of the TON, rooftop bar, open for guests even when the majority is reserved for an event. Its a great feature and having it off limits with no notice for private events doesnt seem right. But Shawna and Mark in the Lobby Bar work hard to make up for it! They were awesome and really made our stay memorable. they do such a good job welcoming, helping and reminding guests the Viking is special! Their local knowledge and service mindset are great.
Beautiful historic property in the center of Newport and a short walk to the wharf area and the mansions .
Gorgeous old hotel…small room with out of date bathroom
Nice upscale hotel near International Tennis Hall of Fame. Where the players stay during the Newport Open. Nice rooftop bar/lounge area
Centrally located, staff was friendly and helpful
Hotel Viking was great. Newport is such a fun walkable town.
I wont be back
Loved the location and the character of this property.
From the view of this property online, I was expecting much more. It is a beautiful old hotel that was renovated not that long ago - but is clearly in need of more work. The interior still feels worn, the rooms in particular. Most disappointingly was the mattress - it was an old spring mattress and our springs were damaged near the top so your head curved downward even when using your pillows (which were also terrible). Overall, for the prices charged here, I wouldn’t go back.
Looks like i was double charged for the 3 night stay. The hotel is old and musty. Ugly and outdated room. breakfast cafe was nice as was the server there
outdated, musty, old, slow bar. I was double charged by the resort
Hotel need to be updated
Beautiful area and hotel
The hotel is beautiful, and the location is great, but the AC in our room wasn't working properly, so we couldn't rest. It was a nightmare. Our room had a sofa bed, but no linen in the closet, as usual. We had to wait for someone to come with the pillows and blanket. We had just 2 towels, but we were 3 people in our reservation, so I called again a the next day to get a towel for our son. Just details, easy to fix, but very annoying... My conclusion is that our Suite wasn't ready, but we did check at 4pm, it wasn't an early check in. Maybe they just need more staff to supervise better,
Absolutely wonderful Birthday weekend for my wife. Hotel was stunning and staff friendly and very attentive. Seeing Tennis Legends at the Hotel was an added Bonus!
The historical hotel is still regal and elegant. The dining options were delicious.
Bathroom door did not close. Bathroom tiles not fully attached to wall near toilet. Television did not function properly. Fire pits at roof top bar did not all function. Staff was wonderful
This hotel has beautiful rooms. it is in a great location.

The Hotel Viking offers a mix of modern and vintage design, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The staffs are friendly and efficient. Its location is within walking distance of the newport mansions, restaurants, shops and cultural sites. This elegant hotel serves as more than a stay. You feel like you’re stepping back in time while still enjoying the modern comforts the hotel has to offer.
Absolutely loved our stay. The front desk found out it was my daughter’s 18th birthday and they sent us cake. It was a great gesture and made our stay even more special. The hotel is gorgeous and there’s a nice feeling of history that is so fitting for the vibe of Newport.
Always a Great stay at The Viking ! Great Location, Great People !
Very disappointed, especially given the price. My husband called it a dump. I don’t think it was that bad but 100% not worth the cost.
