The best time of our life. The best food and best staff.
The food was delicious and full of pleasant surprises. We stayed for two nights, and the meals on the second day actually managed to surpass those of the first. Our suite came with a private onsen, which fully met my expectations. As for the public bath, because the hotel has a limited number of rooms and we visited during the off-season, it was a fantastic experience—not crowded at all. When the bus I booked for the trip there ran into issues, we had to switch to a taxi at the last minute. I sent the hotel an email in advance, and despite the heavy rain, they sent staff out to the perimeter to wait for our car and guide us in. There is a piece of calligraphy on the second floor of the hotel that I couldn't understand, so I asked the staff about it, though they didn't know the meaning at the time. I thought that would be the end of it, but the next day while we were dining, they specifically prepared a translation for me, explaining that the characters were pictographs representing 'Heaven' and 'Water'—the very name of the hotel. I was truly touched by this. During the day on our second day, we headed to the nearby city of Hita. Since I couldn't register for a JR membership to book tickets online, the staff helped us call to coordinate and even drove us to the station. Hita ended up being another unforgettable memory from our trip.
The property is in a very quiet and peaceful area. The staff is absolutely amazing. They were very responsive and helpful with explaining the pickup and transportation to the ryokan. I left an item behind, and the staff did everything possible to get it back to me while I was still in Japan.
It's very hard to meet or exceed expectations when a property 1) has such great reviews and, 2) is at this price point yet somehow Sanso Tensui managed to do just that. It's stunning. The onsen are beautiful. The level of service is unmatched. The food was incredible. This was a splurge for us and we do not regret it. We only stayed one night—I only wish we had stayed two to enjoy it more.
Accueil parfait. Service parfait. Nourriture parfaites. Lieu parfait. Bains incroyables !!!
Le cadre, l’accueil, l’ambiance, le calme
J’ai tout aimé
Everything is amazing and this came from someone who has visited many ryokans in Japan jn the last few decades
Nothing
Hochwertige sehr japanische Ausstattung. Am besten ein japanisches Zimmer buchen. Hervorragendes, liebevoll zubereitetes Essen.
Alles top, bis auf die Anfahrt
Amazing breakfast and sophisticated dinner. Thoughtful service and great flexibility. The onsen was really nice and helped to soothe my aching back,
Tucked away in a little town this place is a hidden gem! Loved the room, loved the facilities, loved the food and the staff were so friendly.
Little hard to find - but we got there.
The hotel location is wonderful, in the woods, secluded, and close to nature. It has a few onsens, we tried 2 of them, and it was an excellent experience, especially the indoor/outdoor one. The staff is extremely friendly. They have English-speaking staff, so communication was no problem. WE came late, drove at night, and the signs to the onsen saved us since Google Maps goofed. The room was spacious and comfortable. We did enjoy it.
A little more heating in the dressing room at the outside onsen would be beneficial. Using a fan to distribute the heat is not the most efficient way since the airflow cools the hot air coming from the A/C. It was a cold day, close to freezing, and the three minutes between the dressing room and when the hot water started flowing in the showers (before entering the water) were a real courage test. However, after dipping in the water of the onsen, it was awesome.

Wow. We had the most amazing stay. The location, staff and food were exceptional and nothing was too much trouble. Our room with private onsen was quiet with beautiful views of the forest and river. The dinner and breakfast were stunning with so many new things to try and my goodness, we did not go hungry. If you want somewhere to completely relax, this is the place. Thank you to everyone at SansoTensui for making our stay so special.
Nothing
Great staff, fantastic service. Someone actually waited for us at the carpark to help us with the luggage. That's the 1st time I encountered such a warm welcome! Loved the many different onsen options, both private and public. The views were great

Staff went above and beyond for us, even offering vegetarian meals despite advertising otherwise.
Lovely hot springs
Amazing location. Surprising when you enter because the community is spare and somewhat in disrepair. Underpromises but overdelivers. A shocking transformation once you enter the grounds
No faults
Everything. The service was top-notch. We were picked up in a van from Amagase station. Got a room upgrade which made our stay so magical. The staff were so so so lovely and helpful which made our stay very memorable. And the food was just otherworldly - the fact that it was seasonal produce made it extra amazing. Most importantly the hot spring baths we tried were soooooooo nice. Peaceful surroundings amidst breathtaking nature and the fact we had a rainy day made it extra mystical when the trees were all shrouded in mist. Our best experience in Japan yet!
Nothing!

Just 30 minutes by direct train from Yufuin and 90 minutes from Hakata Station (in Fukuoka) via the Yufuin-no-Mori train lies Amagase Onsen near Hita, the closest major city. Amagase Onsen is one the "Bungo Major Three Hot Springs (Bungo Province is now what is known as Oita Prefecture), along with Beppu and Yufuin, and is best known for its mixed bathing open-air baths along the river (called Kawayu.) There are several stores in he area that sell "Yuami" clothing, which are water wear that's commonly used in mixed gender baths that allow coverups such as the ones in Amagase Onsen. While not well known among Westerners, Hita and Amagase Onsen do attract a fair number of Asian travelers due to its accessibility. Hita and Amagase Station are along the Yufuin-no-Mori train route that runs from Hakata Station in Fukuoka to Yufuin, so it's many visitors spend a few days in Fukuoka, then traverse through Hita, Yufuin and Beppu, and fly out of Oita Airport or return to Fukuoka. Aside from enjoying the Kawayu onsen baths, there are some other things to do here. Mamedamachi is a very nicely preserved old town center in Hita, with several old merchant homes now operating as museums, cafes, restaurants and stores. It's not as large as Takayama, Kanazawa or Matsumoto, but it's not overrun with tourists, either. We noticed some Asian tour groups roaming the streets, but it's relatively undiscovered by independent travelers. For those of you interested in Hina dolls, the museum in Mamedamachi is the most impressive one we've ever seen, with awesome displays of the dolls from different eras. Also in the town center is Tezukuri Ohagi Inaka-an, a cafe that serves wonderful Japanese desserts, including Ohagi - sweet rice cakes that are similar to Mochi but quite different in texture. From mid-February to mid-March, Hita really comes alive, as plum blossom viewing reaches its peak during this period. We checked out the Hita Oyama Plum Festival a few years ago (on our way to Beppu), and it's definitely worth experiencing if you happen to be in the area at that time. Sanso Tensui is the top property in the greater Hita region. If our experience there is any indication, I'd argue that it's easily among the 20 best ryokans in all of Japan, and priced at a fraction of the rates that top properties command in nearby Yufuin. Established in 1998, this 19-room ryokan is surrounded by a moss forest, is located next to a gushing river and impressive waterfall, and the smell of the onsen is just as strong (if not stronger) than the vast majority of hot springs we've experienced. The architecture is traditional rural Japan (it's very charming), but the interior is Taisho-era (similar to Iwanoyu), which isn't to our tastes but it fits really well with the atmosphere here. It's also far enough away from the main part of town that you'll really feel secluded when staying here. The area has a large number of massive boulders, and Sanso Tensui's architects did a masterful job of building the structures around the boulders in an effort to preserve the natural environment. The owner and his wife also own Kaya Usagi (also in Hita) as well as Kurokawa-so in Kurokawa Onsen, a ryokan that we wouldn't mind visiting one day. We stayed in "Special Suite Kaori", which is an 85m² accommodation and one of the three "special suites" that were created in 2017. All of the special suites feature two (or more) rooms, a spacious terrace, an open-air Onsen as well as an indoor Onsen. Although it's not to our personal tastes, here, the Taisho-era furnishings and decorations gave it a soothing sense of place, and we could tell they put a lot of (unique) thought into the rooms. The bathroom sink uses the remains of an old Singer sewing machine stand, which is a cute touch, and the overall eclectic mix of early 20th Century Japanese and Western aesthetics were interesting without getting in the way of comfort. On the deck of our room was a large, open-air onsen rock bath with views of the forest and the sound of the gushing waterfall (which is only viewable from one of the public onsen.) The only drawback was the bathroom only having one sink. Note that even with the doors closed, the onsen smell (caused by hydrogen sulfide in the spring water) is acute, and may prove to be overpowering to some people. Furthermore, the sound of the river flow and waterfall is extremely audible - if you are sensitive to strong odors or sounds, this might hinder your ability to sleep. For people with such concerns, I suggest you book one of the 5 rooms that do not have onsen. There are some wonderful bathing options elsewhere on site, beginning with a whopping three different Daiyokujo (gender-segregated public baths.) Takimian is accessed by climbing a long wooden staircase up the side of a hill, and the open-air onsen offers scenic views of the river and Sakura Falls. Hibiki-no-yu (for women) and Take Sansui (for men) are massive rock baths that are set along a picturesque river. Finally, there is an indoor public bath for those that don't want to brave the Winter cold before getting into the onsen. Then there are five private rental baths that are clustered in the far end of the grounds, all of them face the Goraku River. The most interesting ones are Kamayu, which is a small bath (only big enough for 2) shaped like an Udon noodle bowl and is an onsen jacuzzi, Kawayu and Kiriyu, both of which are big enough for 4 bathers (Kiriyu is slightly larger and might be able to fit more.) These are all free to paid guests and is available for use on a first-come, first-served basis. For dinner, all three Tokubetsu Shitsu (special rooms) have meals served in their own room, and the same goes for the 5 rooms that do not have in-room onsen - all others dine in the ryokan's main restaurant, which isn't a major negative since all guests at the restaurant get their own koshitsu (private room.) Breakfast for all guests are served at Sanso Tensui's café lounge Hakurakuten. Both meals were incredible; we loved the Yamame Zenryufun-age (Japanese Cherry Trout from Oku Hita fried with whole grains), which had a nice, crispy (but light) texture and juicy inside, the Kumoko Chawanmushi (savory egg custard with Cod Milt) was dreamy creamy, and the Kasu-jiru (Soup dish made by simmering Sake lees) mixed with seafood and vegetables was an awesome substitute for the typical miso soup at the end (together with rice and pickled condiments.) And the Kusu Hitomebore rice, served at both dinner and breakfast, was delectable. Dinner was elegantly served by Yuko Baba, who patiently explained all servings in painstaking detail. Sanso Tensui really punches above its weight - it's a real bargain, and the onsen experience is second to none. Despite being off-the-beaten-path, it's also very accessible - Unless you're dying to check out the "Hells of Beppu" (for mesmerizing experiences go to Iceland or Yellowstone instead!), I'd definitely suggest a combination of Yufuin and Hita (or Kurokawa Onsen) versus heading over to Beppu.
It is a best place to stay in my life.
Everything was perfect - the staff extremely friendly and guest-centric, the room was clean and the food was top notch!
Nothing much. Location can be a bit hard to find, just trust Google Maps.
Staff provided incredible service, Fuji-chan was the best. The room was amazing. Amenities top notch. Best kaiseki dining for both dinner and breakfast. The baths were beautiful and clean with lovely views of the nature all around.
Nothing. It was perfect.
They didn’t just adjust meals to my dietary needs. They encouraged me to tell them what I enjoy eating so the meals could be perfect for me. I really really appreciated this gesture as everywhere else in Japan seems to resent anyone who can’t eat everything. The rooms are spacious and the private bath in room type B is huge! We also stayed another night in Kaori room and the bath here was something else. The reservable private baths are super magical and clean. Never had any issue booking those. You can choose to have breakfast at 11 which is great if you want to sleep in or enjoy the baths instead of wasting precious time eating. It’s a luxurious stay from start to finish. I will never forget this stay. My husband and I have vowed to come back for our ten year anniversary, just to stay here. Book this place. Don’t hesitate. The bad reviews are super old and we didn’t encounter any of the issues
Absolutely nothing
Everything was PERFECT!!! We stayed at a room with open-air bath type A, room no. 305. We loved this room so much! We will definitely go back to stay here again. All the staffs were so helpful and so kind. Their service was perfect. The foods were so delicious and I mean every single thing on each plate! Even their still-water was so delicious!! I do not think there is any ryokan in Japan as perfect as this place. I recommend this place with all my heart.
Sanso Tensui was an exceptional experience. The staff were warm and attentive, making the stay truly memorable. The ryokan is beautifully maintained, with serene gardens and a variety of stunning onsens to enjoy. Both breakfast and dinner were outstanding—beautifully presented and delicious. It’s a bit hard to reach on foot (about a 30-minute walk from the station), but the hotel provides a free taxi or shuttle service to and from the nearest station, which is very convenient. Highly recommended for a relaxing, luxurious stay.
We had a great experience living here. Everything is perfect, the food, the bath, the room and the service. We really enjoyed the view when taking the bath in our private room. The food is delicious, we have tasted so many different Japanese dishes. We strongly recommend Sanso Tensui!
We drove to this place and they welcome us at the car park. The staffs were very very helpful. Check in was smooth and we got a surprise upgrade from the boss. It was indeed a wonderful Christmas present for our family. The room, the food, the vibes were exceeding our expectation. I will definitely recommend my friend and will also come back again in the future.
The services of the staff is superb. The room is tastefully decorated and the food is excellent!
The cleansing and other skin care products are very limited in the onsen.
This property has so many onsen location for you to choose. You can also reserve for private onsen session. The staff are very helpful and the atmosphere at this property is superb.
Excellent food, outstanding location, fantastic outdoor hot spring, very attentive staff
Nothing really.
The staff of Sanso Tensui are very friendly and do anything they can to make your stay memorable. Breakfast and dinner are outstanding in taste and presentation.
It’s beautiful. They have like 4 onsen and rooms with private onsen and you can also book a private onsen. Very nice for couples as the regular onsen are women or men only. We had the room wit private onsen and it was worth every penny. The room looked out on the waterfall and a nice Japanese garden. The surroundings are beautiful. You hear and see the waterfall, everything is like a Japanese fairytale. The employees are the kindest. And the food is probably the best Japanese food we had. The total experience was so luxurious and perfect. We loved it!
Everything is perfect!!
Sensational location, brilliant service and exceptional food - what more could you ask for?
Expensive for a family, although worth it
The service, the facilities and everything was perfect

The seclusion, the staff service, the facilities and the food

This traditional Ryokan is incredibly beautiful. It has well-kept beautiful old buildings equipped with all desired modern amenities and wonderful onsen. But the very best thing about our stay was the service. The staff really give it their very best. They helped us so much with transportation troubles due to a typhoon and the chef prepared the most delicious and beautiful Kaiseki (traditional dinner) and breakfast.
There is nothing we did not like. One suggestion could be to have a body lotion dispenser for after the bath in addition to all the other toiletries.
I could write a novel about the excellence of Sanso Tensui and it's staff. From the moment we arrived at the train station and were welcomed, to seeing the property and being awe struck, to checking in and seeing our room, and everything in between, we were absolutely in love with Sanso Tensui and glad we decided to stay here. The onsen (private and public) are incredible. Many are near waterfalls or are immersed in nature. I spent many hours in the baths, or reading on the patio surrounded by nature. Every staff member was incredibly welcoming and helpful. The food was incredible, not just in taste but in presentation. I honestly am so overwhelmed with how incredible it was that I don't even know what else to write. All I can say, I wish I could stay there forever. It was the perfect way to relax, unwind and refresh my brain. I can't wait to come back.
There is nothing that could have enhanced our stay.
This was an actual 10/10 stay. The hotspring baths are amazing, the rooms are beautiful, the staff goes above and beyond and the food is quite the experience. If you come here i would also recommend checking out the bar. The bartender is very nice and made us some amazing cocktails. I can recommend his "rose petal mojito".
Private, quiet and clean. We could stay in a very special room which was perfect to celebrate my mother’s birthday. Staffs were kind and dinner and breakfast were delicious. Thanks to Sanso Tensui. We hope to stay again
Nothing
We had delicious kaiseki dinner each night in a private room, each day with a fully new menu. Exciting and wonderful food experiences. Thanks to all the staff for making our stay phenomenal.
I would like to have left a review letter but I forgot because I was pressed for flight time. So I leave my review here: Overall, it was all great. Room condition, onsen(condition and number of), food, staff. I've been to ryokan a few times, this ryokan was better than I expected. Actually it kept on raining during my stay. Usually, I don't like rainy days but I've change my mind-a scenery of rainy day have a charm of its own, it does. Sitting in the open-air bath and watching the rain-soaked mountain and valley was rest and relaxation I imagined. I'll recommend to my friends that Sanso Tensui will be best choice for get away from hustle and bustle. It was a little difficult to get there, but it was worth it.
Nothing. If I had to say, a amount of dinner was a little bit too much, so I couldn't finish it.
Wonderful experience. We had a suite with the private onsen and breakfast and dinner. The staff is very attentive and the food is amazing. They go out of their way to service you. The dinner is a multi course keiseki with amazing flavors. Highly recommend.
