Provider-sourced guest reviews.
The hotel's location is excellent, as it's close to both the ferry terminal and the bus station. My room (single room) was clean and quiet. When you consider the price compared to the average price of hotel rooms in Oban, you really get a lot for your money. Of course, you can't expect top-notch facilities at this price. Thank you for the pleasant stay!
Despite some other visitors concerns I had a lovely experience. Easy to book, called a couple of times before to discuss arrival times and confirm bookings, staff were pleaseant and helpful on the call. On arrival on a busy and noisy Friday night, staff again were lovely and helpful, locals/regulars didnt stare or make us feel unwelcome, found parking right in front of the property, basically it was seamless - very welcome after a long night drive. Rooms were spacious, well-equipped and clean. Leaving early in the morning was simple as there was a prviate doorway for guests. While I appreciate some of the rooms may have been noisy on a weekend night we got three rooms on the top floor and had a quiet peaceful night. And it is very conveniently located in the town.
The room smelled like a damp ashtray. Disgusting.
Lovely hotel for price - being on the top floor with luggage was not so much fun- amazing staff, large room and bathroom, walking distance to main parts of Oban. Bathroom had a bit of mold would be only real issie
It's a characterful pub with rooms above, and crying out for a facelift. Nevertheless our second floor room was clean and quiet and served us well for a one night stay before the ferry. For public transport location couldn't be better. Wetherspoon is handy for breakfast. Karaoke enthusiasts could have a great stay here.
Clean older room, remodeled a little, nothing fancy, but the price reflects it (58£ i think) and it was fine for just one night. FYI 2 flights of stairs … Parking in front in the street free from 6 pm to 9 am. Local bar downstairs but no noise.
We stayed one night. The place is as described and as reviewed. Some will find it decent value and others will say you get what you pay for. The pub downstairs is full of friendly locals willing to chat you up if you stop in! Well located to walk Oban.
Good location. Near Ferry crossing
Room was close to ferry and main area. Would not recommend or stay here again. No lift and rooms are on the 2/3 floors, old building.
Very friendly staff and enjoyed meeting with the locals in downstairs bar.
Cheap and cheerful, if you are looking for luxury then this isn’t the place for you. However for the price I found it served my needs. Beds were fine and the room/bathroom were very spacious. I Would stay again.
Great location, good staff. Clean and comfortable. Highly recommend.
Quiet, clean and comfortable. Excellent location. Highly recommend.
Disappointing Stay, Not Suitable for Families or Solo Travellers I stayed here recently and, unfortunately, the experience was quite uncomfortable. The pub on the ground floor creates a very loud and disruptive atmosphere — during my stay, a few intoxicated individuals made racist remarks, particularly targeting asians, which made me feel very unsafe. Definitely not a welcoming environment for families or solo travellers. The building is old, and although the bedsheets and covers were clean, the bathroom was extremely dirty and clearly not maintained. There was a strong smell of smoke throughout the corridors, which lingered the entire time. Check-in was slow, and no Wi-Fi details were provided, which made it harder to settle in. The only major positive is that the location is convenient, being close to the port area and public transport. The bathroom was filthy, and to make things worse, the drainage didn’t work — water just pooled on the floor and wouldn’t go down. Totally unacceptable. The entire building is old, poorly maintained, and there was a constant smell of smoke in the corridors. In all, this property does not offer value for money, and I would not recommend it unless you’re just looking for a last-minute, one-night stay and are prepared for a rough atmosphere.
Not level
It is an old, decaying hotel. The room smelt bad, and there was no way to open the window. The general state of cleanliness was poor. The fact that such a place is still available for rent is unbelievable.
Fun pub but toilet didn't flush properly and the hot water was broken
Perfect location
Pictures that others have put up are a true view of the room YOU may be staying at, I thought working away from home and staying in digs was bad HOWEVER, they were the Ritz compared to this YOU SHOULD BE PAYING ME FOR STAYING THERE, if my wife had came with me, we would have been straight back home that day! If the right people went in here it would be shut down FACT!
we knew we were not staying in a high end hotel. this hotel is fine if you need an affordable place to stay. we stayed in a family room with 3 beds. one was a nirmal twin and thw other was a bunk bed with a double on the bottom and a twin on the top. the bunk bed was nit comfortable but the single twin was. our shower had a small amount of black mold and the apartment had a musty smell. no wifi password was given and we didnt want to go i to the bar and ask so we lived without it.
Totally fine, 3specially at the price. This was a very interesting 3xperience. We were happy travelers.
Excellent stay.
Comfortable, quiet and with a decent shower. Very basic accommodation but perfectly serviceable - cannot argue with the price during peak tourist season!!
Gracious staff assistance. Surprisingly quiet. Bit of a slog up the stairs.
Staff were very helpful. We checked in very late. Room was clean but very dated. One mattress was terrible the other was ok.
I didn't expect luxury but it was bad. The bedding was worn and pilling so it felt dirty. The shower might rank as the worst shower I have ever had. I didn't wash my hair for fear of never getting the shampoo out and it was barely warm. The room was not filthy but definitely grubby and had a damp smell. The only save was that it was above a pub full of locals that were friendly and entertaining on a Karaoke night. The big problem with them was that the smokers were under the window after we retired and were loud. I've stayed in worse accomodations, but they were a small town in the former Soviet Union.
The hotels location is great! All amenities like hairdryer, fan etc. were there. Room looks good. But the shower cabin could be renewed as I felt quite claustrophobic. And the main thing that the window was really dirty. I have kids. So obviously they checked everything, they were standing by the window it was all moldy and super dirty. Otherwise room for a night is great.
Great folks! This is a basic room above a pub, so if you are expecting something besides thar you might be disappointed.
Location Location Location. That is about it. This place was very run down. Our room was just so dirty and there were towels stuffed in the window... Not sure why. Maybe as it doesn't properly seal or close? Not ideal for a family, but amazing location to be able to walk around. Kinda noisy, as the bar is down below and our room looked right onto the street. On the first morning, I was awoken around 4:30am by the loud banging and clamouring of someone putting recycling out or something like that. Took a while to get hot water in the shower. Room was so hot and stuffy, but thankfully there was a fan in the room we could plug in. Affordable, but don't expect much. Not that clean. Thankfully, it was just a place to crash, as we were out on the island and walking around for most of our time in Oban.
As we expected. It is not the Ritz. Rooms above a pub. Excellent location. Quiet clean room. It was all we needed for one night. Would definitely book again.
Great budget option
Basic quite sparse accommodation in a good location (one night was a bit noisy outside).
Good nice clean needs updated but we are going back in August. Loved the banter in the bar with the locals staff very nice and cheerful
Used as a base only so not there much
Ok for what you pay
This is an old hotel. Clean and tidy. Walking distance to town centre and some of the main sites. Quiet. (We were on 3rd floor). No lift but that was ok for us. Character - slightly sloping floor. Good value
The property has a very good central location in Oban. Nothing is very far away. However the ground floor is actually a pub which isn't mentioned in the advertising but there is a side door to get into the upstairs accommodation. The rooms were not great. Ours was quite shabby and needed redecorating. Also wasn't very clean. The " residents lounge" seemed to be a games room for the locals in the pub and not for guests unless you wanted to play darts! Bar staff were quite friendly but only checked our room once in six days. The accommodation was generally very poor but i guess that was reflected in the price. Other places in Oban could have cost up to three times as much. I've stayed in worse but I honestly cannot recommend this place. Sorry.
This photo is deceptive - there is NO sign on the front of the building about any kind of hotel, only Clary. I learned from a local at the front outside for a smoke that I needed to go to the bar inside to find the hotel. My room was dusty and dirty, toilet seat was broken, plug stopped working and I couldn't charge my phone, and everything had seen better days LONG ago. I have left more details on google, and am shocked this one was even on Hotels.com. Awful experience.
It was ok. Beds ok. Bathroom had mildew in the shower. Good location near pier.
Friendly bar staff and customers.
Great service, cheap and clean. All I need when booking any hotel. Staff are great as always, very friendly and happy to help!
This was the ultimate ‘budget’ accomodation. I was given the key and told that my room was on top floor. That was about the extent of contact on arrival , other than I bought a drink at bar and had to enquire about wifi. The room was non smoking but smelt like smoke covered up with something strong ! I could not get hot water or any flow in shower !
Clean basic room Great for a cheap overnight stay Everything you need Thankyou for our stay *****
I liked the darts except I lost - the pub has the right kind of ambiance for a drinker like me
Was okay but would likely stay again
This place has changed and the pictures are nowhere near what they offer. The smells are horrid and the black sheets are not a good look. What are they hiding? We were given a key and let go. No WiFi instructions or check out instructions. This is not a place for families.
Very good for the price. We slept well in the beds. The shower worked fine. The hotel is old and it shows here and there.
This hotel was not worth the budget price we paid. It was completely rundown and sketchy. I am sure the staff did what they could to clean, but it was an extreme dissapointment. The name of the hotel online does not match the building. No one answered the door to let us in upon arrival, we had to enter through the bar. The shower drain did not work in the room and would have flooded the bathroom. The light did not work above the sink. There should be a warning about how many flights of stairs there are to the rooms. We have dubbed this part of our holiday as "The Scary Clary." Positives: fun adult and kid game room. Close to downtown area & ferry.
The staff are very friendly and welcoming the room was basic but clean and had everything we needed we had room 1 and the beds were small but very comfortable. Highly recommend this hotel if you're looking for a cheap no frills stay in Oban, also great location for ferry and train station.
Noisy bar until 12.45 a.m. on Fri and Sat
An inexpensive and comfortable stay as we awaited our ferry to Mull.
There was nothing to like. Room run down, dirty, malodorous...sewerage odour from bathroom. Toilet lifting off uneven floor.
Our twin room was up at the top of the building, it was clean and quiet except when the pub shut. Basic, but enough for one night's stay.
The room was spacious and overall clean, a typical "budget" accommadation in terms of furniture. Location ideal for train station and ferry terminal. Bed was uncomfortable and the live music from downstairs was rather loud and went on till past midnight.
Two or three long flights of stairs to get to tourist rooms. Quiet despite the ground floor pub and evening live bands, which I didn’t hear. Great location and quite inexpensive.
Dont expect the ritz but it does what it says on the tin for a good price ! Good location, and friendly staff
Tracy on reception was very friendly and helpful bar staff where fantastic great at their job all round good experience great value for the price
Enjoyed stay room clean though a lot of stairs
It was a bit rundown. It's a pub for the locals. The guests who stayed above my room were very loud until early hours of the morning. I won't stay there again.
The hotel room was ok. Good area of town. We are from Australia where water is very expensive, in this room the shower had to run for an unacceptable time before warm water. Standing naked waiting for hot waternis not much fun, kepp your clothes on people while you eait foe the warm water for a shower.
The property looked liked it should have been condemned years ago
Room was fine - emergency stay after ferry was cancelled. A blind for the Velux window would be good - room was flooded with light from early morning. Not a complaint, more of a suggestion. Location good for ferry services.
The family room was large and comfortable, with a big bathroom. Very clean and the staff were lovely and friendly. Oban was a delight too
Great little budget hotel /bar , reasonably priced had room at top of hotel , no noise from vibrant bar downstairs
Not the nicest place we’ve stayed but honestly fine. Some of these reviews are way too harsh.
Convenience for railway station, ferry and shops
I arrived late in the evening the young lady at the bar was very helpful overcoming my anxiety regards leaving bike in car park. I forgot to ask her name and cannot recall if she advised me. When I came into bar there was entertainment going on however this was not intrusive . I had a great nights sleep I read some reviews before hand but if people cannot accept your programme of renovations you are better off without them
Great budget option and breakfast was perfect
Basic, clean, central and friendly
Our room was on the top floor so there were many flights of stairs, we got our exercise in! Theroom was a nice space, only thing disappointing were the beds. Sorry to say that the mattresses were uncomfortable. But for one night with an early to rise morning, it got the job done.
Room fine but bathroom needs an update. TV un watchable but that maybe the signal
Very basic but very cheap Decoration badly in need of upgrade Worst hotel shower ever.
Very friendly staff. Close to all amenities.
I'll cut to the chase with this one. If you're expecting all the frills, you won't get them. HOWEVER... Its an absolute bargain and certainly ideal for a short break. The hotel itself may be in need of some work (and it looks like some of that work has started), but ultimately, its clean, comfortable, ideally located given its very close proximity to the railway station etc, and even the noise issues that people had raised in other reviews wasnt an issue. You might get a bit of background noise but its not offputting and what do you expect? Its in the town centre next to a railway station and a ferry port. I still managed a good nights sleep. Check in was also very straightforward and easy too. Definitely recommended for anyone who needs a place to get a good nights kip for the next days adventures. 👍
Location was convenient for the ferry. But the bed was very saggy and uncomfortable and there was a lot of noise throughout the night (shouting, arguing).
Good budget accommodation. Staff were friendly and helpful. Rooms tidy but definitely require some TLC. Pub down stairs so can get quite noisy on a busy night.
Only staff contact was at bar when booking in. No dining facilities. Shower would not hold in place. Electric switch outside of shower situated under the water pipe. Absolutely noisy. Guests smoking at fire escape door. Rolls of underlay blocking hallway. I had to leave a night early due to noise from Bar Area. Won't be going back.
Although there was no smoking signs everywhere. The room stank of smoking. Although it was very quite and booked because it was a lot cheaper than anywhere else.
Good value and as advertised. Good sized mugs for tea in the room
Great location but was noisy in morning near ferry and traffic. The hotel is Victorian and has some charm but is bare bones. Beds were not comfortable
New name on the outside - “The Clary”. Stayed here for one night. Very affordable price and you get what you pay for. Check in was easy and smooth, just speak with the bar tender. Very happening bar/lounge and “Home of Claroke”. Separate entrance for hotel guests after checking in.
I enjoyed my stay, and have booked another 3 nights.
Central location for public transportation. Room got all I need for the night.
Great spotless place to stay. The most loveliest young lady behind the bar and reception Nicole
Very central to everything and walkable.
I mean its not the ritz but it doesn’t claim to be, needed somewhere to rest for one night while working in Oban and it did the trick
Great visit as usual. Barr staff amazing, always welcoming and friendly. Room was amazing and mega value for the money. Highly recommended and will be back soon
This room was very cheap and for the price I was happy with what I got. Rooms are above a pub. First floor are common rooms with dart boards. Second floor rooms 1-6. Third floor 7-12. I was in room 8. This room was pretty quiet. On Saturday night I could hear some noise from the street outside the pub but nothing too bad. There was a darts competition or something in the common rooms which was very loud but couldn't hear from third floor. I'm sure on first floor it would have been a problem though. Internet is available in the rooms, not only in public places like some of the info suggests. However the connection did drop out at times. It's clear the place has been redecorated recently. Bathroom still a bit grubby though. My only real complaint is there was no shade on the skylight so I was awake by 7am because of the light.
Ideally located for the pier, shops, restaurants, train station and ferry port. Check in was quick and easy and the team are friendly. Clean, comfortable and budget friendly
Staff are nice and helpful, only downside is l was up 3 flights and with dodgy knee not so good but would defo stay again, also met a lot of nice people
Really friendly staff and lovely local community it’s good price for money and location is right next to the train station and ferry’s so you are at the heart of the town! Also they have great karaoke nights and music 💜
Had a comfortable overnight stay in a cozy and well-appointed hotel room. Just what I was expecting—great value for the money
Amazing hotel with great facilities - public bar was excellent
Amazing stay. Use this place loads and its total value for money. Can’t argue with the pricing which is half if its closest rival and with the pub joined which has great staff and entertainment; you can literally fall out the pub into bed!!!
This is an older hotel in need of refurbishment
Room cold. Heater didn't seem to work properly. Shower door couldn't open, so could use shower. Room and "bathroom" dirty, although beds clean. Rugs breaking up. Really shouldn't be available for guests.
As previously highlighted.
The above choices do not require any further comment.
Bit rough but worth the money 🙌
It was looked shoddy.
