Nice boutique, very quiet and spacious room with a large park/garden behind. A lovely Bawa design
Absolutely breathtaking, the grounds, the staff - hard to fault
It’s an amazing property. The buildings, lake, pool and gardens.
There was confusion about whether there was a room with twin beds so my friends had to stay in the back room where the second double bedroom could only access the bathroom through the first.
This was easily the best place we stayed during our two-week trip, with several others to compare. From the street, you would not expect much, but once inside, it is completely different. The property is very large and feels more like a private park. There is a lot of greenery, large old trees, and a big pond with an island in the middle. The houses, designed by Geoffrey Bawa, are highlights of the place. The one we stayed at was practically an art gallery, blowing our minds away at first and impressing us the whole stay. Wildlife is part of the experience, birds and monkeys, so it really feels separated from the city outside, even though it is right there behind the walls. The staff were very attentive and handled everything (breakfast, transport, and showing the place). If needed, they were always available, literally just a bell away. Overall, a very memorable place and probably the closest to “perfect” we have experienced.
Amazing location in a Geoffrey Bawa Building. The house, the garden and the pool are a dream and Sana, the responsible at the hotel, took amazing care of us. Would highly recommend!
Stunning property, design and architecture and garden
Only the scent of the towels ! Which to my nose smelt of mothballs , probably very useful as an insect reliant in these parts but very strong .
Totally unique
The shower needed more pressure. There was a cockroach and a lizard running around.
Fabulous art, design, nature & history. Thank you for the kind service and the sunny breakfast pond-side.
"Tropical Modernism," but room lacking a bit in natural light, cross-breeze and garden views.
Amazing hotel, great staff, beautiful rooms and garden. It’s a must !
Nothing to dislike !
Iconic Bawa architecture, interiors and landscape architecture. Fabulous. A gem. Friendly, helpful staff.
The quality of the toiletries could have been better.
This estate is an incredible oasis with a 17 hectares garden. Staying here as the only guests felt magical. Designed by the legendary Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa for friends who were artists, the use of light and space in the estate is incredible, with the main house consisting of two suites full of modern art and antiques. Bawa later designed in the 1990s the incredible gardens, which are over 17 hectares and include sculptures throughout, bridges across the massive lake, a big mangrove forest, the ruins of a chapel, and other artworks. Walking the grounds felt like being in your own fantastical world . The caretaker was lovely and made us a delicious massive spread for breakfast that he served in the garden in front of the lake , with homemade juices, multiple curry, milk rice and other delicacies. He also made us tea throughout our visit. The management for the estate was reachable via Whatsapp. Staying here felt like stepping into Bawa's world and was so much more rewarding and unique than some of the neighboring Bawa-designed hotels. There's letters and pictures with Bawa on the walls and items from his archives. An iconic stay for any architecture or Bawa fans.
Basic amenities but didn't bother us. One thing is you need to pay in cash, which was not immediately clear. As this is essentially a private villa with a caretaker, things will be a bit slower than a hotel but it contributed to the dreamy feel of the place.
This is a beautiful historic property by one of Sri Lanka‘s most famous landscape architects. The beauty of the property is unmatched. Breakfast was delicious, but one should confirm the order in which you like it presented.
There were few amenities for the modern traveler. The bathroom was clearly meant for a tall man. I needed help to get the shampoo and body wash down from a very high shelf. The towels smelled of mildew. There was no garbage can in the bathroom, clearly not understanding the needs of women. The lighting in the rooms and the electrical outlets were clearly for another time. Although the staff were overly attentive, their time management was very poor. Our 8:15 AM breakfast was served at 8:45 AM, which ordinarily would not be a problem, but our driver was waiting.
