Super friendly staff. Clean. Good facilities. Location was also great. Breakfast was well cooked, although the coffee could be improved.
Bed was a little too soft for my liking so uncomfortable, but that's my personal preference. The decor was dated (but I suppose it fitted the hotel theme). Slightly expensive.
Classic and historic

Within a village, loads of history and character Very luxurious
A bid pricey but worth it
Very nice features. The food was very good and the service was good also. The staff were friendly and helpful. The bedroom was a good size and comfortable.
We were told that if we arrived early we would be able to get a snack in the bar. What they didn’t mention was that we would have to wait 30 to 45 minutes because they were busy. I also didn’t like that guests had to pass through the restaurant with their bags and cases to get to the car park.
Staff were very attentive and helpful. Hotel is rich in character And the rooms are wonderful. There was a large group of us with children and they opened the rear garden just for us; very thoughtful.
That we hadn’t booked to stay longer!
Beautiful old hotel
Lovely return stay at The Spread Eagle Hotel and Spa - this time with my children and our dog too, all beautifully looked after by the staff team. A lovely staycation with great guest experiences, delicious food and great spa area too.
My partner & her pal went last week with a voucher I bought her. They had a super time in the Spa + treatments & the staff were excellent as always. Not for the first time tho, the restaurant let them down. The food was bland, undercooked & overpriced. She'd said before that the portions were small so I got an extra £25 voucher for her to top up with extras. How do you mess up a vegetarian dish ? Two florets of cauliflower with some pomegranate seeds on top in a "sauce" was the only non-meat option. So they ordered 2 portions of tasteless / weird-textured chips to go-with (£13) & some bread (£6.50) only 6 others in the restaurant on a Friday Lunchtime. not hugely surprising. I did e-mail them last Friday to give them a right to respond first, but only got a reply advising that my e-mail had been forwarded to Management. Partner does want to come again for the excellent spa &pool but they'll be eating elsewhere next time.
The spa staff and whole experience was fabulous, loved it. Sadly ruined by the very unwelcoming restaurant staff who behaved like we were a nuance in deciding to have afternoon tea or asking for a menu to have a glass of fizz as we were a little early for 3pm tea. Would have 5 star if not for the restaurant staff.
The hotel is wonderfully quirky with a long history, situated just on the edge of the medieval and Georgian town of Midhurst. The hotel has been renovated to a high standard without sacrificing the essential character of its medieval and Jacobean heritage. The dining experience is superb with no ghastly Muzak, just the hum of conversation over widely spaced tables. Good food and wine complement the friendly and welcoming service. It’s a rare find and one to be enjoyed at leisure.
This is a really lovely hotel. We booked five night stay which was great value and fantastic relaxing break. The rooms are charming- we had the courtyard suite which was a generous sized room with window seats overlooking the front of the hotel and and space for comfortable armchairs - great for watching TV; A lovely big bathroom with seperate bath and shower. Super comfortable beds. The Hotel itself has lots of space to relax in , bars and lounges and a garden area ,conservatory and terrace . Very dog friendly ( only the restaurant was dog free ) . Breakfast cooked to order and homemade Bircher, pastries and stewed fruits. Midhurst is a great place to visit -lots of lovely walks around the area including the Cowdray estate. A special mention to the staff who were so helpful and really made our trip such a relaxing break . This is probably our new favourite Sussex Hotel
De openbare ruimtes en de spa.
De kamer, 'nieuwe' kamer best klein en snikheet! Geen airconditioning, klein raampje open en een ventilator. Niet om over naar huis te schrijven.
Good breakfast , staff excellent, location spot on , sadly our rooms were on the road and were very hot , but was an exceptionally hot day , but will certainly return if I can book different rooms
Different rooms , but they were all that was available we will return
Echt authentiek Engels hotel. Als in de film. Behulpzaam personeel. Heerlijk.
Het was extreem warm tijdens ons verblijf. Gelukkig was er een ventilator geplaatst op onze kamer. Airco zou fijn geweest zijn (maar minder authentiek!!)
The breakfast was superb but the choice of the dinner menu could be improved
Choice of dinner menu
The hotel is in a perfect location for historic central Midhurst and is only a short bus ride away from the South Downs Way. As such, it was a very luxurious stopover for us as we walked the path. The staff are very courteous and the facilities are very nice. A portable air conditioning unit had been installed in our room which was much appreciated during the heat wave. The room was very quiet and comfortable and the breakfast was very good.
Generally it was all very good. The only improvement I can think of would be to install a heated mirror in the bathroom to avoid it steaming up after every shower.
Had really anticipated staying here for a big birthday and left feeling really sad..it definitely hadn't lived up to the expectations...the staff were all friendly and welcoming but the rest of it was actually pretty disappointing. Dinner on our first night was really poor - the lamb kofta was dry and overcooked, the accompanying piece of bread was cold and burnt. the Plaice was terrible - the recommendation of the waiter - hardly any meat on it and actually really slimy even the broccoli was undercooked. After a long day at the races went to bed around 11.00 only to be kept awake for the next hour with a party in the Queens room directly beneath our room - Oak. Eventually had to call reception to find out when it was stopping. Awake at 5.45 as the curtains didn't cover the windows properly and the east facing room allowed the sun straight into the room. Went for breakfast at 0915 - our meal didn't turn up till after 10.00 and when it did it included one very burnt over salty piece of bacon.. On reflection, I wouldn't return , which is such a shame as it was supposed to be a really special event and unfortunately the hotel just didn't live up to all the hype (and the cost)
Location was really nice right next to a small town
USB ports in room
It’s in a beautiful location, is steeped in history and had good facilities.
It was very hot for sleeping and noisy if you had the windows open.
Good location to where I was going
A bit stairs if big luggage 🧳
This is our 2nd time visiting the Spread Eagle in the last 2 years and it was just as good this time! Spacious room and bathroom (we stayed in the Egremont Room), great swimming pool/spa facilities. Staff were just as friendly and accommodating as last time. We love the old architecture in parts of the hotel, including the hotel bar. We just stayed for 2 nights - perfect for a little, relaxing getaway. We'll definitely be visiting again!
Thank you Spread Eagle Hotel & Spa team for such a lovely stay! This is our 3rd time staying at this hotel. A big special thank you to Zara for organizing such a beautiful and romantic room for our anniversary say, and for organizing a celebratory complimentary glass of bubbles!:) Lovely staff from the warm welcome at reception, to the helpful night duty staff, Spa and restaurant teams. A special mention to Horis the restaurant Manager and the Hotel manager for being so kind and attentive. A charming hotel full of history, character, with beautiful rooms & Spa, delicious food and talented Chefs. Thank you, kindest regards Katie & Nikki .
Absolutely love this hotel - have been numerous times and it’s always such a lovely, relaxed experience. The spa is lovely the conservatory and the lounge bar are delightful areas to sit and relax and have a drink and I really enjoy walking around the surrounding village.
Stunning hotel in a beautiful setting. Lovely rooms, and a great breakfast.
No shower in the en suites.
Love this hotel for the Polo Gold Cup weekend at Cowdray!
Really nice well appointed and friendly hitel
Varied breakfast choices. Good sized bed and comfortable. Tea making facility, unfortunatly no creamer.
Room was incredibly hot luckily there were two windows we could leave open to get a draught at night. It looked as if the shower might flood the hotel; impossible to keep water in the tray.
A small party of us stayed for two nights over a weekend, mid June, for my daughter’s wedding. Although, the wedding reception wasn’t at the hotel, the hotel and staff couldn’t have been more accommodating. We had an excellent dinner the night before the wedding, fantastic breakfast and coffees and pastries were brought to the room, where my daughter and bridesmaids got ready on the wedding morning. The hotel accommodated all of our needs in a friendly and professional manner. A few more guests stayed the night of the wedding and we all had a lovely breakfast together on the Sunday. The staff were all so professional and nice to us. The Spread Eagle is somewhere I’ve stayed on a few occasions now. It’s great for a couple of days rest and relaxation with a lovely spa and treatment rooms. The surrounding area is pleasant for walks and there are lovely shops and cafes in Midhurst. I highly recommend a stay here for value for money, quality of rooms and food , the spa and the lovely staff. Thank you to everyone who helped make my daughters wedding weekend so special.
Wonderful historic hotel, in a beautiful setting with friendly, helpful staff, great facilities and lovely food.
The Hotel is a real treat, food, dinner was very well presented but did not taste as good as it looked, breakfast the Continental was good cooked breakfast very disappointing the Bacon was of a very poor quality tasted of salt only, eggs well cooked but not free range eggs when paying over £200 for one person for one night
Quality of food.
Lovely location with a spa, free for guests to use.
A wonderful overnight stay. Everything we wanted from such a historic hotel. Staff are brilliant.

Delicious breakfast, great check-in staff
The noise outside in the morning bottle bank collecting etc at 6.30 am!
Stayed for 1 night mid week with my partner for my birthday. We had deal for spa access, dinner, bed & breakfast & a late check out. We chose this hotel because it is old & full of character & for us it was all perfect! Our room "Egremont Room" was full of charm, wood panelled walls & a lovely big comfy 4 poster bed along with a very modern bathroom with an amazing shower. We spent the whole afternoon in the spa & relaxing in the spa garden as the weather was warm & sunny. We had a complimentary glass of sparkling wine at the bar before our dinner (as it was my birthday) we very much enjoyed the food & the wonderful service from all the bar & restaurant staff at both dinner & breakfast.
Personal service.full attention to customer's needs. Peaceful and quiet. Amazing spa
For me, personally, the lack of vegetables in breakfast
Such a gorgeous spa hotel and throughly enjoyed our time here. 100% recommend for a relaxation holiday.
Ordered milk twice to the room but no one came
Fantastic Olde World Coaching Inn.
De mooie kamers en het verfijnde avondeten en de spa

Simply the best without a doubt. I have been visiting the Spread Eagle for some years now and feel so at home. The staff are wonderful as is the food. Accessible and easy to negotiate if you have a disability. Very good value for money, spotlessly clean and very comfortable rooms. Would highly recommend. My first choice for a little break with a wonderful spa.
Beautiful hotel, fabulous breakfast

I had a wonderful experience in the spa this afternoon. As a beauty therapist myself, I struggle to be able to unwind and relax when having treatments, however Liaya was able to deliver an amazing treatment for me. I feel totally relaxed and renewed. Thank you for a wonderful first experience. I will be back
Wonderful old building
My husband and I arrived for a two night stay immediately after our very busy wedding day, and were so happy to be here. Warm welcome, very helpful and friendly staff who went out of their way to make us relaxed. Upgraded to a gorgeous 4 poster bed room (the Oak Room) and treated to some complimentary fizz with our dinner! All of the hotel staff were so polite and welcoming, the restaurant staff were excellent, and the food fantastic! We ate breakfast twice at the hotel, as well as 1 lunch and 1 dinner. Can’t fault any of the meals, very high quality food and quick service. The bar was quirky and a good range of drinks! We also made full use of the spa facilities and massage options. All facilities were very clean, high quality, and never too busy. Overall, a 5* stay and loved every moment! Can’t wait to return.
Beautiful building and good spa facilities
They appeared short staffed and the wait for food and drinks was quite long. The staff were all lovely.
Love the hotel, food this visit was particularly great and the welcome Ar reception and the spa is always genuine and impressive but… had to beg for a wine list (3 times!) and generally noticed creaky and inconsistent service in the bar and restaurant.
Fantastic hotel - did not disappoint. Old age charm, good service and food with the added bonus of a spa. Enjoyed our overnight stay for my husbands birthday and was gifted a glass of fizz each to celebrate! Will definitely come again…
My mum and I went for a morning spa day at the spread eagle and had the loveliest time. Of all the spas I’ve been to, this is the best one. The hotel is beautiful and the spa is really nice. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. I had an express facial with Liaya which was bliss! She really took time to look at my skin and use the best products and offer fab advice after. Her technique when doing the facial was brilliant and I felt super relaxed. Can’t recommend her enough! The only slight downside was the lunch. As a vegetarian there was only 1 option which was broccoli in sauce. It tasted nice but I was starving after 😆 All in all a really lovely day though. Thanks spread eagle team! X
Great to have use of the lovely spa facilities. Absolutely stunning building. Excellent dinner. Very friendly staff. We had a lovely visit and will be back!
Only slight (niche!) grumble was the suitability of our room for hot weather. We were on the top floor without air conditioning, and it was the middle of a heat wave. Not the hotels fault, and they did provide a fan when we asked, but we struggled to sleep due to the temperature (30 degrees in our room overnight, with the fan!).
We stayed here quite recently. It is easy to find with a lovely big carpark and is a good base for exploring the area including Chichester which is about 20 minutes drive away. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is very old with lots of interesting antiques around and a real fire in the bar in the evenings. The spa wasn't too busy and I enjoyed swimming in the lovely pool although it was a little strange to have to walk through the restaurant and conservatory in a dressing gown to get there! We enjoyed our stay but there were a few things that didn't meet our expectations given the price bracket - We upgraded to a Midhurst suite but the room still wasn't great, the bed linen and sanitaryware were clean but the rest of the room was grubby, the chairs, carpet and curtains were not clean and the paintwork was all scuffed and the bathroom door bashed! Our first included dinner was very good including the service. The second, although the same menu, was disappointing especially the dried up lemon polenta cake and the wine turned up halfway through the main course. The second cooked breakfast food was better than the first but the two young girls serving didn't seem to be able to cope, getting orders wrong. They ran out of yoghurt and even marmalade by 9am! It always annoys me when there is a supplement for smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. I wanted to feed this information back but the follow up email to our stay didn't have a working link to do so. We might stay again if we were in the area we got a reasonably priced deal.
Beautiful hotel. Clean, very friendly and superb food.
Slightly on the pricey side.
Very nice good location
All good - meal disappointing
The history
The room was small but very cozy and clean. The bed was comfortable, there was a coffee machine in the room. The breakfast and dinner were excellent and the staff very kind. The massage at the SPA excellent.
Maybe just the spa could have been improved. Other than the pool the other facilities were very small and would benefit from a renovation, but all in all was very pleasant!
Dinner on the sunday evening was better than expected and a big shout out to Horace , charming man Breakfast was also above expectations
Right in the centre of Midhurst. A lovely old building with close access to the Spa.
Nothing
Comfortabele kamers, Spa en zwembad , zeer goed « continental breakfast »
Wat duur voor de kwaliteit van eten, English breakfast viel wat tegen, Zwembad/ spa was niet helemaal proper
I know people in the Village, so they Recomended this place, and I have stayed before.
Nothing ! It is expensive, but everything reflects that !
Fabulous staff, very helpful.
Room a bit hot
Great location , lovely interiors and excellent staff - dinner was very tasty
Spa a bit small for the numbers using and breakfast was just ok , the cold buffet was average
Beautiful building, friendly and helpful staff and good value for a special stay away
Historic and cozy. The hotel facilities were really nice and welcoming. The staff were exceptionally friendly, polite and very helpful.
From our room you had to walk through the hotel restaurant to get to the main reception, the spa and out of the hotel
Charming, cozy and well appointed. Our room was clean, comfortable and looked to have been recently renovated. We ate breakfast lunch and dinner at the hotel and all were excellent, with a great selection of reasonably priced wines and some from local vineyards. All the staff were excellent, friendly and attentive. Will definitely come again.
This was my second visit to the Spread Eagle Hotel for a spa day, and at this rate I’m basically one more booking away from asking them to forward my post there. It was a bit busier this time, but still spotless — even the reception area looked so clean and cosy I briefly considered moving in. The whole building is packed with character and history, the kind of place where you half expect a portrait on the wall to wink at you. The pool and sauna were brilliant, and the gym — while not the size of Wembley — had more than enough equipment to convince me I’d earned my dinner. And what a dinner. The haddock was enormous, practically a national landmark on a plate. The extra bread and butter with my fish and chips went down an absolute treat too. Small detail, huge joy. It was a birthday treat for my girlfriend, and she loved every minute of it. The staff were fantastic, nothing was too much trouble, and the whole place has such a lovely setting. It’s not the biggest venue in the world, but that’s part of the charm — intimate, warm, and the kind of spot you find yourself wanting to return to again and again. Which is exactly why I’m already plotting visit number three. At this point, they might as well embroider my name on a robe.
I had a lovely stay at the Spread Eagle Hotel in Midhurst. The building itself is full of character, with its historic charm and cozy atmosphere making it feel really special from the moment you walk in. The rooms were comfortable and well-kept, blending traditional style with everything you need for a relaxing stay. The staff were warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, which made a big difference throughout the visit. I especially enjoyed the spa facilities—perfect for unwinding—and the food was excellent, with a good variety and high quality across meals. Overall, it’s a great choice if you’re looking for a peaceful getaway in a picturesque setting, with a touch of luxury and history. I’d definitely consider returning.
Historic hotel in beautiful Midhurst with a great spa and good restaurant
Breakfast was quite basic
Superb spa. Quality restaurant service for evening meal The whole building exudes period charm
Perhaps offering a la carte options for dining for those with smaller appetites would be helpful
I have just enjoyed the most glorious weekend at the Spread Eagle in Midhurst. It was booked as a last minute escape as I wanted to treat my daughter - who has been training for the London Marathon - to a bit of pampering, and we couldn’t have wished for a more restorative stay. We were looked after brilliantly by a team of welcoming and thoughtful staff (a special thank you to Sarah). The room was gorgeous and full of enormous character, the food was sensational (both dinner and breakfast) and the spa was divine – we were even able to stay to enjoy the facilities a couple of hours after check-out. It really was everything we could have wished for and more and made for a proper reset. Simply wonderful!
Wonderful warm and relaxing old world place to stay. Everything from the staff ,food, spa and accommodation is fabulous. Relax in an armchair by the fireside, or Splash out in the pool and spa. Then enjoy a delicious dinner, attended by the impeccable Maitre D', Horace.
A really great stay, from booking with friendly, helpful reception team, through to the warm welcome on arrival. Room was clean and comfortable, top class housekeeping with toiletries, coffee etc replenished without having to request them. Spa, pool area comfortable, if a little crowded. The therapists we had, Ellie and Laiya were first class. My massage was perfect and the Nest area for relaxing after treatments is absolutely perfect. The hotel is beautifully positioned in the little town of Midhurst with plenty going on. Car parking is ample (with points for electric vehicles) Food is good and plenty of staff to ensure service, without being intrusive. A great place for a short break to rest and relax.
Lovely rooms. A fabulous meal in the restaurant to celebrate a birthday. Considerate and friendly staff.
Nothing. Delightful.
Such a lovely stay. The staff were all friendly, food delicious, lovely bedroom and spa!
I was part of a larger party attending for tea and sandwiches and refreshments following a memorial service. This was an excellent end to what could have been a sad day. The food was excellent, the ambience actually set by the family and guests was enabled by the room the event was held in so conviviality was what was wanted and what we got. Space to chat without fally over each other and a varied mix of sandwiches and cakes a really good "English Tea". Will go again if in the area.
Excellent staff, always available to help. Restaurant food top quality. Location perfect. Beautiful building oozes a long history. Lovely spa and team.
Beautiful historic building steeped in history, rooms comfortable and spa a great addition.
Hot tub wasn’t working. Large fireplace in bar was too Smokey couldn’t sit and enjoy the bar due to coughing, probably needs a chimney flush that’s all. A few hic cups at breakfast, it would of been nice if the staff had suggested a good will gesture rather than waiting for a complaint, the attitude seemed to be, we resolved it eventually so that should of been enough, every manager runs their hotel differently. Other than that it was a great stay and we would return.
The staff were really friendly and made my partner’s birthday very special with a room upgrade and complimentary drinks. Room was lovely, as was the spa. Would highly recommend.
The history of the hotel was amazing: it was like beung a guest in a museum. The fireplaces were great. THe staff very friendly. All excellent. Highly recommend.
We booked to celebrate my husband’s birthday. We were given an upgrade to the Courtyard Suite, such a beautiful room and some champagne. The hotel is a stunning historic building. The food was delicious and service was excellent. Our room was immaculate and so comfortable. We booked the Sunday lunch special offer which we felt was very good value. I would recommend a stay here especially for the warm and efficient service given by all the staff.
We stay at this hotel every year for 24 hours of calm relaxation. We are always welcomed back by Sarah and Horace who look after us exceptionally. The hotel is always clean, the bedrooms are quirky and charming. All staff are pleasant and professional. The food is outstanding. Our annual trip is one of the highlights of my year. Equally as lovely in summer and winter.
Booked for afternoon tea for a belated Christmas present for my mum. We sat in the bar and it was just gorgeous. Huge fire place, dark beams, twinkly windows, squishy sofas… uneven floors, a building steeped in history. Just wonderful! We all ordered cream tea. Possibly the best cream tea I’ve ever had in my life. I have done a lot of research…. The scones were warm, the cream was delicious and the jam was out of this world. Nothing beats homemade scones and jam. A super afternoon with 3 generations from 1 family. Thank you
Very old and full of history
Nothing really, it takes a while to adjust to how old it is, once you except that you’ll enjoy the hotel more.
Amazing experience as usually, I have been coming to this spa hotel with my wife for years, always exemplary service, amazing staff and best manager you could wish for in Sarah. Look forward to coming back on the 12th.
Enjoyed a great spa morning at the Spread Eagle for my birthday. All staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Spa facilities were good and the food excellent.
Lovely return stay at The Spread Eagle Hotel and Spa - a well earned, well timed treat with great guest experiences, delicious food and great spa area too.
Not really anything to shout about. Bed was comfy, staff in the spa were friendly
Spa was really basic, wouldn’t recommend at all. Day staff on hotel reception weren’t very friendly. Hotel rooms very basic & really need updating. Breakfast also needs updating. Everything very old school
We had such a lovely stay with our dog in this historical hotel. It's so cosy with all the fire places and character off the building. The dinner was delicious! The spa is lovely. Lovely welcoming touches with a free upgrade and free drinks. We will definitely be back!
Really enjoyed the breakfast. All the attention to details. The room was lovely. The location of the hotel is good situated just off the main street but on a quiet road. The spa was very nice too.
I gave my daughter an overnight spa experience at The Spread Eagle Hotel & Spa for her Christmas present. We had such a lovely & memorable time before she flew back to Australia. I had had the hotel recommended to me by a friend and it certainly didn’t disappoint. We loved its old fashioned quirkiness with the open fires etc. Our room was great, comfortable and very individual which we loved. We enjoyed the spa area (swimming pool, sauna & steam room and jacuzzi). We both had very an enjoyable spa treatment. The staff were kind & attentive, the food delicious and the ambience great. The hotel itself is situated in the heart of Midhurst so great for a wander and good walks too. Am hoping to bring my husband & parents here sometime soon as I’m sure they would love it too. Highly recommend whether it’s for a spa break or just an overnight stay.
As repeat guests at The Spread Eagle we were delighted to find that everything was as good as it has ever been. Our room was clean and quirky-in the old building- with a brand new bathroom. We had treatments at the Spa-my husband claimed the best back massage he had ever had. We stayed for 2 nights and ate wonderfully on both nights, would especially recommend the Specials. Service throughout was warm, welcoming and efficient. Our warm winter hug of a hotel. We will be back!
My friend and I enjoyed a wonderful stay at The Spread Eagle hotel. A warm welcome, upgraded room, wonderful spa treatments and delicious food!
£9.50 for biscuits we didn't order. £17 for a few chestnuts and a little rice. Still hungry. Argumentative Polish waiter. 12% service. No thanks.
