Location
The bedroom was tired and needed a good deep clean. Mould in the shower and finger marks on the furniture
Lovely little hotel in a great location
Parking wasn't offered
Alles perfekt
Bar staff were wonderful. Location was perfect.
We opted for a deluxe room but I was very disappointed as it was lower/ground floor level with fully glazed windows so we couldn't see outside at all - not even to tell what the weather was doing. The room also smelt of cheesy feet which was off putting! Every now and again the shower would let out a short burst of water and there's no door to the bathroom so this was quite annoying throughout the night. The overall feel of the room was therefore quite depressing. None of this made me feel good when I'd spent more to treat ourselves on a deluxe room.
Location and staff were very helpful

Location and facilities
The room was tiny, no aircon, bathroom was dated.
It is convenient and comfortable. I always stay here.
Convenient and friendly
Easy to reach and it has parking
The air conditioning did not work so it was incredibly hot in the rooms. We did not sleep at all as a consequence, which ruins a stay. Our classic double was very small. Not enough vegan offerings for food. The garden looked surprisingly messy and uncared for.
Central, comfortable and the staff were so friendly and helpful
Room was a bit small for two people
Property was better on the inside than out! Thoughtful room set up and great dog package
Location and cleanliness
V expensive for tiny room, bathroom and even smaller and bed far too soft
It is very dull and tired with peeling paint. Looks like it needs a major renovation. 0/10 for style and interiors
The rooms are dark, furniture is chipped and old. Windows did not lock properly, cobwebs and peeling paint on every window. Appalling design
Stunning preservation of history
The per night rate was higher than usual
Location and staff top notch. Good breakfast
I thought it was slightly tired
Great location. Lovely ambience and super comfy rooms. Staff very welcoming and helpful.
Very Limited parking on site however public carpark was close so not too much of an inconvenience.
Amazing Room !! comfortable bed, everything we needed for our stay ! The staff were absolutely amazing, so helpful and accommodating, they made us feel at home from the start of our stay, nothing was to much trouble and we were made to feel exceptionally comfortable from check in to check out.
Great location
the location was good for our needs.
Better storage/shelving in the bathroom. There was very little space to put anything. My breakfast of French toast, bacon and maple syrup was ruined by the addition of icing sugar on the bacon. It was revolting I couldn't eat it. The need to book parking needs to be clearer. I didn't see anything when I booked and there were no reminders in any of the subsequent emails you sent, in which by the way the print is difficult to read.
It was very clean and staff were very attentive but not intrusive.
Nothing
lovely restaurant bar and grounds. Heated out door pool which was lovely. Staff all very friendly. Room was very nice with a huge and comfortable bed.
The bathroom is in the middle of the bedroom (ie they have removed the walls of the bathroom). Don't like this at all. Storage not great. Lack of storage and the sink with all your wash stuff on it opposite the bed makes this lovely room look very messy. No dressing table which my wife didn't like. Again, having all her stuff on chairs and bed etc not very comfortable However, hotel itself and the size of bed and decor all very nice.
Pool
L'hôtel est idéalement placé pour visiter la ville . La chambre était spacieuse et belle . Plateau de courtoisie. Parking . Accueil professionnel.
Location, facilities, staff: excellent bar, cocktails, wines and spirits range. Good food, supper and breakfast. Super little swimming pool.
Would have liked to be able to park onsite but didn’t manage to book one of the limited spaces in time : but public cp just a few minutes down the road so ok. Bedroom good but bathroom a little tired and showing its age.

Service was superb
Nothing
A romantic evening away in a beautiful hotel with a really comfortable bed
There wasn't anything not to like!
Le calme, la proximité avec la vieille ville, la chambre originale
Le service au bar et le dîner
Location
Bathroom stench, small bath shower, espresso cups too small for coffee dispensed
The pool is great and the restaurant was also really good experience
The air con was broken not working in the middle of a heat way, which made sleeping very uncomfortable

Smell nice and lovely hotel
Beautiful building, beautifully modernised. The swimming pool is a gem! Staff are friendly and very helpful.
The food is average, even slightly disappointing.
Der Pool
Das Frühstück: verwirrende Speisekarte, zuerst falsch abgerechnet
I had been offered a room upgrade for £10 shortly after booking my room and decided it seemed like a good deal. I was really pleased with the room I was offered. Large, well appointed, and comfortable. The bed was really comfortable and I got a great night's sleep. I was also able to open the windows if I chose. Definitely worth the extra. Great breakfast, which I was able to eat outside on the terrace. I particularly liked using the pool.
I didn't like the high price for car parking. £25 for what was only an overnight stay (as I arrived at about 10pm that night) seemed very steep. I don't object to paying for the privilege of parking but feel a tariff like £15 might be more reasonable.
Amazing as always
Pool to cold
Long overdue a refit. Looking very tired and dated.
Nichts.
Staff were friendly and food was good. As with previous reviews of 3 months ago/ sitcom was broken and our upgraded room was like a fridge. We rang. Someone attended. They were unable to fix the problem. For a 2 night eagerly anticipated break without the children this was a huge disappointment and overshadowed the weekend.
Room was as cold as a fridge, this couldn’t be rectified by hotel staff.
No air conditioning - this is a long standing issue and fan supplied inadequate Poor coordination / communication between bistro and events which se meant that planned event was chaotic
We loved our stay here, everything was so comfortable and the staff we all lovely. We booked onto the tasting menu and were served by Dylan who was fantastic. He gave us a really interesting experience, explained how all the wine pairings worked without being overbearing. The food was also incredible! We would definitely come back and recommend anyone visiting to try out the tasting menu.
Our first visit to the hotel, just for coffee this morning 29 August Coffee was £9.00 for two , no pastries available. Our order was taken, paid for and them instantly forgotten by the member of staff 30 mins later I went to find out where our coffee was….. No apology from the staff who brought the coffee to us. Bad customer service and experience all round
Very comfortable suite, super comfy bed. Good bistro food quality.
A couple of petulant check in staff. We hadn’t realised we needed to book parking, but there’s a nice way of saying we are fully booked, and a petulant way of telling us to move our car.
Gorgeous room, great pool
Quite exclusive infrastructure with small but beautiful swimming pool, astonishing bar and restaurant rooms and classy building.
Our room was much too hot, even when outside temperatures had dropped, the room stayed very hot. No airco, only a fan. Personel was basicallly friendly.
Location brilliant. Breakfast great. Hotel rooms very nice
Beer selection poor.
Great location, comfortable and clean room. Lovely garden area and dining room, great breakfast choice.
Centrally located
Air con was broken and parking a stress despite booking.
The property is full of character and well maintained. The room was perfect for our two-night stay.
The staff were exceptional during our stay and they are the reason for this 5 star review. Everyone we interacted with was so pleasant, friendly and welcoming! The service was much more attentive and personal than I’ve found in other hotels (including the really fancy ones). I don’t know quite how this magic has been accomplished, but it’s refreshing and would make me choose this hotel again. It gives you a feeling of security that they recognise the guests and have an eye on who is coming and going within the hotel. Anything we asked for was done willingly and promptly. Fresh robes within minutes of calling down to reception, water bottles filled at the bar before a day out, taxis booked. The building itself has character. It was originally an Eye Hospital and later used as a War Hospital. The ground floor has original mosaic floors, signage and fireplaces and all the public spaces are very tastefully decorated. It’s a short walk from the Cathedral and the Quayside, so the location is good for the city centre shopping. We found the walking route along Southernhay felt safe and was well lit in the evenings, but the suggested path to the Quayside less so. If you’re going to the Quay, the walk through residential streets behind the hotel is considerably nicer than taking the path by the roundabout. If you’re travelling with children as I was, it’s worth knowing that the hotel backs on to a park with an extensive play area, which is very convenient for an after dinner run-round. We travelled by train and it’s a 10 minute walk through the city centre to the hotel from Exeter Central railway station. It’s best to walk round by the main road when you arrive - don’t try and shortcut through the cobbled Cathedral Yard if you have wheeled luggage! We had a Deluxe Double room on the 3rd floor, which wasn’t large but was adequate for the two of us and nicely laid out. It was charming, with a beautiful roll top bath and a great view over the garden and the surrounding hills. There was a coffee machine with pods, a kettle and tea bags, a drinks fridge with a bottle of water, robes and slippers. The air conditioning was cool and powerful. There were little extras, like Ferrero Roche and biscuits. A few small things would have improved the comfort levels. For me, the lighting was an issue. The room was unexpectedly dark, with one small window, and the ceiling lights were so feeble that we struggled to tell if they were turned on or not. I needed my phone torch to read the air con controls. The bedside lights weren’t any use for evening reading, they were more of an ‘atmospheric glow’. The dressing table mirror was too dimly lit to apply makeup, so I did this in the bathroom. The soundproofing was also a bit rubbish, you could even hear the toilet seat in the next room being lifted, so ear plugs would be a good call. We were woken a few times in the night by doors slamming (why is there no soft close?) and loud footsteps. The choice of hard floors in the rooms instead of carpet probably adds to the noise levels. The bed was just about passable (could have been nicer), but the pillows were soggy and ineffective. If we’d stayed a second night I would have asked for extra pillows. The pool (our reason for choosing this hotel) exceeded expectations. It was warm and clean, there were plenty of fresh robes and towels, hairdryers, changing rooms, L’Occitane toiletries. Staff were regularly cleaning and maintaining the area, making sure everything was tidy and fresh. It was open all day. It was our favourite area of the hotel and a pleasant little sun trap. The garden area is peaceful and pretty, with deckchairs and a badminton set (again, great for kids). The breakfast selection wasn’t huge, but it was all good quality and looked enticing. It was elevated by the gentleman who greeted us and showed us round. He even offered to make me an oat cappuccino which couldn’t be achieved by using the coffee machine. I don’t cope well with large amounts of dairy, so being able to get a coffee at breakfast that I actually wanted to drink made my day and justified the price in my mind. The homemade granola bar was delicious, the poached eggs were perfectly done, the sausages were a winner. The banana bread and the pain au chocolat had to be enjoyed too and we ate so much that I couldn’t face lunch. I’m the person who reads dozens of reviews before choosing a hotel and if that’s also you, this is a great option. It’s a calm and cosy place to spend time, quite different from the other chains on offer nearby. A cup of tea on the terrace, an afternoon by the pool, drinks in the nicely decorated bar. We’d gone to visit Exeter, but once we got here, we didn’t feel like we needed to go out. It’s good value for money. Thank you to all the staff here, you made our visit special.
Clean room comfortable bed
Probably. Reakfast included too
Excellent hotel with very nice restaurant and super staff.
Nothing
Lovely hotel with great facilities, very clean and comfy room. Enjoyed the heated pool in the walled garden. All staff were helpful and friendly. Would definitely stay again.
The buffet breakfast was great but the avocado on toast that I ordered as the hot food was awful - the bread wasnt toasted properly and was soaked through from the excess water from the poached eggs, the tomatoes were cold rather than grilled or roasted and the poached eggs were rubbery.
We were very late arriving but they still gave us dinner out of hours. Exceptionally welcoming staff. Also hugely dog friendly.
Slow breakfast (they lost my order!). But it was lovely when it arrived.
Fantastic location. The rooms are excellent and the beds are super comfy. The pool is just a great added bonus.
The room was pleasant and the location good.
The food left something to be desired, the starters were pleasant, the main meals pork chop in particular was very salty, and the crust had gone soggy in the sauce was not enjoyable at all to eat. The pudding was also disappointing the sugar was burnt on top of the crème brûlée which made it bitter. We had to ask after some time for the wine we had ordered, having been forgotten by the waiter. We had to repeat our order 4 times and before it was confirmed correctly, amazed we actually received what we ordered! It did not get better in the morning at breakfast with hard boiled eggs and soldiers (cold unbuttered toast).
We had the tasting menu at hotel du vin Exeter. Dillon was very attentive and engaging throughout the evening, ensuring we were well catered for. The food and wine pairings were well matched.
I had a wonderful stay at Hotel du Vin Exeter for my birthday. Everything from the beautiful hotel, comfortable room to the welcoming, friendly and attentive staff was lovely. The atmosphere was warm and relaxing, and the whole experience felt special and perfect for my birthday getaway. From the moment I arrived, I felt comfortable as I was nicely welcomed by Toby who went the extra mile to handpick fresh flowers and placed them in the room along with an handwritten note & little treats which were so thoughtful. Was it the food & view from the restaurant? Brilliant, the massage I got on the 31st of July was too good I fell asleep 😄… I don’t remember her name now but we also had a lovely chat. The pool was also another great highlight 🤭 I had everything I needed for the perfect summer birthday away. Thank you to the team for making my birthday stay such a lovely experience. I really enjoyed my stay and would definitely recommend Hotel du Vin Exeter to anyone looking for a beautiful and memorable place to stay. I would happily return! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
We were given a room directly above a wedding reception. Really bad planning and no option to change.
Spent just one night at the hotel, great location, fore the centre of Exeter. Staff very friendly, the hotel has great decor. We also dined in the Bistro, a three course dinner, the weather was warm, so we were lucky to dine outside. Food was delicious, well presented, we had three courses, looked after by Ellie, delicious cocktails, thankyou, and Lyndsey & Laura, happy friendly staff that new the menu and help guide us through each course. Breakfast the next morning was equally delicious I had scrambled eggs on toast, with smoked Salmon, cooked to perfection and served by the lovely Helen, so friendly and helpful. Will definitely be staying again, and would thoroughly recommend the hotel, thankyou for great service, and amazing food.
Lovely room, great location, friendly helpful staff and exceptional food
the whole stay , the staff were excellent , kind and interested ,food was good if a little pricey ...room was nice and there was a welcoming atmosphere to the whole place
wider variety of beers would have have been nice other than that all good thanks
Sehr schönes Ambiente. Außergewöhnliches vielfältiges und schmackhaftes Frühstück. Sehr freundliches Personal.
Have just returned from a brilliant weekend at the Hotel having celebrated a Big birthday with my children and dear friends ! From arrival through to our departure the staff have been amazing . From reception to front of house, kitchen brigade and housekeeping , the team could not do enough to ensure our stay was as comfortable as possible ! The management team were so helpful to my wife who had arranged the weekend including the surprises ! Your colleagues are a credit to you 👌. Can definitely recommend anyone to stay in this stylish hotel, spotlessly clean with great facilities and excellent food !
We recently stayed at Hotel Du Vin in Exeter and had a fabulous stay. We regularly stay at this chain but particularly impressed by Exeter. The staff here handled everything with the utmost professionalism and grace and for that we are grateful. The car park works so well & do recommend prebooking a space with reception in advance. The rooms are very comfortable and the facilities (pool) a lovely touch. The breakfast room is impressive and we were fortunate enough to enjoy ours outside. The cosy room is particularly cosy so do upgrade if you can is all I’d say. And watch out for the pesky seagulls if you do eat outside! We have stayed in both summer and winter and recommend both! A great stay and a big thank you to Toby and the team.

Bit dirty around windows
It looked nice in the photos.
I checked in online early on Thursday morning, as requested by the hotel. At no point was I informed that the air conditioning was broken, despite the hotel apparently knowing that it had been out of action for several days and temperatures outside reaching 38°C. After travelling for six hours to Exeter alone with my eight-year-old child, I arrived at around 5.30pm to discover that the room was unbearably hot and we could not realistically stay there. I specifically chose a hotel with air conditioning because I have a serious medical condition that means I cannot tolerate high temperatures. Had I been told when I checked in that morning that the air conditioning was not working, I could have arranged alternative accommodation before making the six-hour journey. The hotel told me that it could not issue a refund itself and that I would need to contact Booking.com. I was also given no assistance in finding alternative accommodation, despite Booking.com's requirements concerning alternative accommodation when a property cannot provide the accommodation booked. I was therefore left at 5.30pm, six hours from home, with an eight-year-old child, in 38°C heat, trying to find somewhere else for us to stay at extremely short notice. I contacted Booking.com as instructed on Thursday and, several days later, I have still heard nothing and have not received my refund. Air conditioning can break and I understand that faults happen. What I find unacceptable is that the hotel had apparently known about the problem for days but did not warn me before I travelled, including when I completed online check-in that morning. I was then left to arrange alternative accommodation and pursue the refund myself. A simple warning before I travelled would have prevented an extremely stressful situation.
Second time staying at the HDV Exeter. Rooms are modern and clean. Service is excellent. Very short walk into town or down to the Quay (go for a bike ride from the quay into the countryside, if you have time). The breakfast room and garden are great and the (small) pool is a bonus. Will happily stay there again when back in Exeter.
The hotel’s own car park is tiny and bitn times we have stayed has been fully reserved. So try to book a space as soon as you reserve a room. Fear not though, the Magdalen Street Car park is right next door. Note you can buy a ticket that starts in the evening, goes through the free period overnight and continues the following morning (after 8am), which is convenient.
Great hotel in a good location with friendly staff.
We have stayed here a few times before & were given a deluxe room on the front (room 303). However the main windows are in the bathroom at the front looking out on roof finials and the bedroom is behind, with the only window being a skylight. A previous customer had broken the blind and therefore the decision had been taken, due to the hot weather, that the blind be kept shut. This made the bedroom very dark, plus the desk lamp wasn't working. We asked to move room, but there weren't any air conditioned ones left, so we were given a drinks voucher, which we appreciated. Just a point on room design - the plug is a long way from the mirror, so that if you're drying your hair it won't stretch!

Ik heb echt een geweldige tijd gehad in hotel du vin! Een heerlijke tuin, zwembad, restaurant en kamers. Hele fijne sfeer en bediening.
Tony was exceptional! Very helpful and kind. Hope he is there for the next stay!
Having to leave
Frühstück war sehr gut, Der Pool war toll und die Lage in der Näheren Umgebung des Stadtzentrums ideal

Good location
Would have like more outdoor space . It was understaffed - we waited an hour to be served for dinner. One order for wine did not come. The staff we excellent but it was understaffed.
Spacious bedroom and bathroom, beautifully furnished. Comfortable bed and good tea and coffee making facilities. Lovely to have a fridge in the room. Toiletries were fantastic, smelt amazing, great quality. Swimming pool and spa facilities were great to have, although didn't use the spa.
Expensive parking and no EV charging facilities. Expensive breakfast options.
The building and rooms. Friendly personnel.
Unsecured WIFI
Restaurant: Good location in the Centre of Town. This review is about the restaurant only so far. Lovely classic French menu you with a modern twists -our server Lyndsay was exceptional, humorous and attentive. She knew everything about the menu and wines and most of all gave us just enough attention. Food was lovely.
Such a beautiful escape, lovely interior, beautiful decor details, what a fabulous breakfast, we enjoyed the pool, terrace , just it was super hot in the room over night , but everything else was great
We had a wonderful stay, the team couldn't have been more helpful and welcoming after an AC issue meant our last visit was less enjoyable. The issue was fixed we were spoiled on our return and would definitely visit again. We enjoyed the 5 course tasting menu and our journey through the wine selections was guided brilliantly by Sage. Sage and Toby welcomed us at breakfast and the cooked breakfast and buffet were fantastic. Throughout they were thoughtful and communicative regarding my dairy intolerance, actively changing aspects of the menu to accommodate.
A lovely hotel in the centre of Exeter - it's a short walk from the cathedral. Our rooms were very good, the food was excellent, and the service from everyone was warm and friendly. The hotel pool is small but a nice addition, and I recommend pre-booking parking.
The location was excellent for visiting Exeter city. Walkable to the shops, quay and pretty Magdalen Road with little restaurants and cafes
Air con not working. I had read this happened a couple of weeks ago but thought had been resolved?
Inadequate parking. Air conditioning did not work. Room facilities poor.
Everything was beyond amazing!! The staff was always available and happy to assist or answer questions. The breakfast included was out of this world and the fresh out of the oven croissant will forever be on my palette. There is so much space to enjoy in the common areas. The room was very comfortable with a huge soaker tub.
I loved everything, zero complaints.
Location. Parking.
Bar area. Muzak everywhere
The rooms are fully equipped with everythiing you need, with very comfy beds. The outside grounds and and swimmig pool make for a very relaxing environment despite the hotel being in the centre of Exeter. Very tranquil !
nice hotel great location nice people
Air con didn't work in the room we stayed in 007 - I should have mentioned it to the staff working that evening but didn't so my fault. When mentioned to the staff in the morning they were very apologetic.
Breakfast good. Room compact but comfortable.
Internal paint colours….
Beautiful hotel. Converted hospital, spotlessly clean lots of quirky original features. Loved staying here! The staff were incredible - literally the best bit! Friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable - they made a great stay in something special! They even got my 16 year old daughter chatting!
The lift buttons are a bit dodgy
Excellent facilities for the price point
Called room service 6 times and reception once (to order to my room) and no one picked up the phone, it was only when I called some 3 hours later that someone finally answered the phone
The Hotel was lovely, clean and the staff were very helpful. Would recommend.
Fantastic hotel located in the heart of Exeter. Easy and smooth check in process, comfortable, clean and all the facilities needed in the room. Breakfast is very good and in a nice setting, eating in the garden or inside the restaurant.
The hotel has a beautiful and wide garden, giving you a nice break away after visiting the city shops. It's perfect for children and dogs. There's a heated pool as well which is very well looked after and clean towels always on the ready. Rooms are big and spacious and the beds very comfortable.
Very well situated, close to city centre, plenty parking with a car park next door. Facilities good, the potential to be a very good place to stay
Cleanliness terrible, dirty cups, dirty glasses, sheets stained, makeup all over furniture, room didn’t look like it had been hoovered. Windows didn’t open and air conditioning faulty
The location is great and the hotel and grounds are beautiful! We ate breakfast outside in the gardens area and it was quite relaxing, the food was lovely that we had for breakfast, staff were pleasant.
Our room was ridiculously expensive for 1 night and it was absolutely NOT worth the money!!! We had to pay an extortionate £25 per night to park onsite!!! And of course the staff don’t tell you there’s a public car park just round the back! It was quite a hot day and the air conditioning wasn’t working in our room so they gave a crappy ‘Dyson Dupe’ that really did nothing to the room temperature - it was blowing at us all night and made us feel a bit ill with a sore throat. Floors weren’t that clean - wooden floor was dusty. It was pleasant enough to stay, overall I’m just not happy with how much it cost for 1 night for an average room and service.
Location
Due for a refurbishment
It had a beautiful indoor and outdoor pool, so relaxing
Nothing, it was perfect for me
Last night we had the pleasure of experiencing the Wood, Fire & Vine at Hotel du vin, The food was absolutely amazing… great company and warming, friendly atmosphere, The staff could not have been any more helpful and making the whole experience worthwhile , already planning our trip back Thanks again to all the team. The place is under new management. Go check the place out. You won’t regret it.
