Mercure Exeter Southgate Hotel

Excellent location.

My room was dated. Bulky brown furniture that is not practical..

The staff were particularly friendly and the room and breakfast wre all exceptional.

I was kept awake for over an hour by a man talking on his mobile phone outside of the hotel in the carpark in the early hours of the morning!!!

Excellent location within a few minutes walk of cathedral, restaurants and main shopping areas. Despite central location, once inside the hotel it is quiet and calm inside the rooms - perfect for a restful stay after days of sightseeing and walking. We didn’t book breakfast but we ended up adding it to our stay and it was worth it - very good buffet selection, large and tastefully decorated eating area including terrace outside. We ate dinner in the restaurant one night and the choice of food and wine was ample, overall a good value meal. Room service we used once and it was a prompt and courteous service. All staff were lovely and friendly, very helpful and really made us feel welcome.

Minor point - housekeeping staff start quite early in the morning and tended to be quite noisy talking loudly outside rooms.

The Reception area, which is the first area all visitors go through , could do with a makeover. The carpet looks like it has seen its better days!!

Bedroom was above the reception area so all the smokers were outside talking loudly plus guests coming and going. Also of the two high up windows (little to no view) only one would open and that was the only ventilation for the room so it smelt stuffy.

dinner in the restaurant took an hour (for the main courses), my salad was limp with too much store bought dressing which just tasted like vinegar and had an overload of croutons.

Having to pay for parking when the price of the hotel was over priced already. Shower that overflowed due to blocked plug. Rooms are rather basic and no hair conditioner , windows don’t open properly and air conditioning doesn’t work well. Very hard pillows. Breakfast was mediocre as not much choice other than cooked.

Hotel was very hospitable and my dog allowed in room and bar. Staff were friendly We were allocated a refurbished room which was really nice We didn’t have time to use but the leisure centre is a nice feature

The receptionist was very helpful and welcoming on arrival. We were checked in early and upgraded to a privilege room. The room was very comfortable with good facilities. We booked breakfast for the next morning on arrival at a reduced rate. The breakfast was excellent.

My now husband stayed the night before we got married and then both of us on our wedding night. We asked about breakfast in the morning and were told that we hadn’t included it in our booking which was fine but to go straight through to the dining room and we would be seated and free and deal with this after. We did and when we left (I also asked for a later checkout) we went to settle up and were told it had been ‘taken care of’. We were very shocked we had been given breakfast and a late checkout for no further expense. Very kind and wry much appreciated.

To be honest, I was expecting a slightly larger room, having looked at the photos when we booked it but it was very comfy.

The restaurant staff good have been more helpful , I asked for some cutlery and was told to go to the drawers and I will find cutlery in one of the drawers , I asked another waiter who totally ignored me , I ended up taking the cutlery off a table that had been set for four people

Reception was very helpful on arrival with changing our beds into two singles instead of a double.

On the morning of departure, we had three knocks and entries of cleaning staff that woke us up three separate staff. This was hours before check out time and really ruined our sleeping schedule and also was worrying as we could have been getting changed.

Everything was great from your staff to the beer garden to the food it was all so really nice. My room was clean and nice just like the rest of the hotel. Would most definitely stay again and recommend the hotel to family and friends. In fact my brother is staying in December partly due to my recommendation.

This is a very minor one, I didn't find the chair in my room very comfortable. This didn't ruin my experience of the Southgate hotel like I said it was a very minor issue.

Great location, room had been recently renovated and was lovely. Beautiful bathroom and shower. Great value for money

Breakfast was not very warm. Scrambled eggs swimming in water. Tables hadn't been cleaned so although breakfast was until 11 we only had a choice of two tables available when we went down at 10. One was right on the main walk through to the breakfast area so had people passing our table constantly.

Brilliant location, walking distance into town. Espresso machine in the room. Swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna and gym available to use at no extra cost.

The bed was so hard that my husband was in aches and pains. The second night we left at 3.00am because of this. Next time we'll ask for a mattress topper.

L'hôtel est situé à deux pas de la magnifique cathédrale d'Exeter. Nous avions le plaisir de passer devant la cathédrale tous les jours en rentrant. Nous avions choisi cet hôtel entre autre pour la piscine. Nous n'avons pas été déçus. La piscine est idéale pour se détendre, avec toutes les commodités (douches, casiers, serviettes) et le personnel est aux petits soins. Le petit-déjeuner est excellent et peut être pris aussi bien en salle que sur la terrasse. J'ai le souvenir d'une serveuse très aimable qui venait compléter le buffet avec un petit mot agréable et un large sourire.

La climatisation était en panne dans les 2 chambres attenantes que nous avions réservées. Nous étions là pour 5 jours en période de vague de chaleur au mois d'août. La seule possibilité de rafraîchir les pièces était d'ouvrir les fenêtre la nuit. Mais comme les fenêtres donnaient sur le toit du restaurant, elles étaient condamnées à une ouverture de 10 cm seulement ce qui n'était pas suffisant. Le défaut de climatisation pour un hôtel de ce niveau est surprenant. Nous n'avons pas eu de chance !

Location was good the room was clean and has everything a guest would need. Coffee station was generous, towels, hairdryers, iron with board. All perfect.

For breakfast there was only one type of cooked eggs (sunny side up) and not enough variety of cheeses. The hotel lobby requires a bit of freshness in terms of smell and layout.

The Location was not too far from city centre. Room were clean and bed comfortable. Shower was spacious. Good variety for breakfast and dinner.

Shower wouldn't drain, causing us to flood the bathroom and onto the carpet in room. The bathroom light was also faulty (requiring flicking on and off 10 times for the light to come on). We reported this and, to their credit, all was fixed while we were out during the day. However, the floor still remained slightly damp for the rest of the stay, while the fact out first morning was slightly inconvenienced by having to break up each of our showers every 30 secs to let the shower drain. For the price of the room, just not something you'd expect.

Superb stay. Very friendly, helpful staff. We had a newly refurbished room on the top floor, which was excellent. Lovely spacious room and bathroom with everything we needed, including tea and coffee makers. Breakfast was very good with a great range of foodstuffs and the best gluten free offer we have seen in a long time. Location was great, near the cathedral and town. We knew about the paid parking onsite- it was good to have the car handy. We didn’t use the pool and gym due to time but a lovely resource to have on hand. Looking forward to our next stay.

The privilege room was excellent with a comfy bed and complimentary beers, water and juice. Very nice bathroom.

Sadly it appeared the kitchen and FoH staff were struggling with the food orders. I asked for some sauce to go with my burger (which was very nice) but 20 mins later I gave up, and the burger had been consumed anyway. Friendly bunch though

A comfortable hotel, the room was quite big, well furnished, with a very nice clean shower room and WC. There is a nice bar and restaurant on the ground floor. The hotel is situated 10 minutes walk from the centre, Cathedral, etc. Very good value for money.

The room was supper small for two adults and a child! I think if they know it’s more than two people in a room plus pet, especially when charging for the pet too! a little thoughtfulness would’ve changed this reviews direction.

Jacuzzi not working, again! (Last time we stayed as well) Main reason we stay here is the leisure facilities. No soap in bath.

We had room 178 which is on the front.of the hotel, could hear people talking outside till quite late but this is the only thing and no reflection on the hotel.

When selected hotel on Booking site it did not clealry indicate that a parking fee of £16 per day was NOT included, therefore total cost for two night stay was £32 extra. Need to be clearer in future.

(For context, I’m older, with a chronic health condition - mainly using the sauna/pool/jacuzzi for physical therapy.) During my trial session with Jack, Elliott and Izzy, I was immediately impressed by the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. There was no hard sell - they were just friendly and knowledgeable, answering my many questions and giving all the information I needed. As a result, I signed up. After a couple of months as a member, I’ve found everyone to be helpful, professional and very much a team - always reassuring when staff seem to enjoy their work. (The number of long-term members around is also a good sign.)

The air-conditioning was not working and we were not told about it before arrival. The fan provided was too small and the windows hardly opened.

We’ve been using the Exeter Mercury as a stop-off point for the past few years to break up our journey down to Cornwall, and it’s become a firm favourite. It’s a great hotel in a fantastic location, making it really easy to wander into Exeter, explore the city and take in some of the sights. The hotel is also very dog friendly, which is a big plus for us. During this stay, we unfortunately had an issue with the air conditioning, which wasn’t working. However, the staff were fantastic and did everything they could to make us comfortable, providing fans and being really helpful throughout. A special mention has to go to Lucy, who was absolutely tremendous. She was friendly, attentive and went above and beyond, even providing us with breakfast on both mornings. The breakfast was, as always, tasty, plentiful and a great way to start the day. Despite the air conditioning issue, the excellent staff and service more than made up for it. We’ll definitely continue using the Exeter Mercury as our Cornwall stop-off. Highly recommended — great location, great staff, excellent breakfast and very dog friendly!

Have stayed here before and always rated it as our favourite Mercure and it still is and we use Mercure often. The bedroom and bathroom in room 149 was immaculate and very clean. Proper wardrobes and drawers to store stuff. Food at breakfast was excellent as was evening menu. 7 of us, we all had different food and it was all perfect. All praise for Chris having to deal with us all. All staff very friendly. Cant fault anything. Will definitely return.

The staff welcomed us with a smile. We were too early to check in but our luggage was stored for us. The room was spacious and clean. The position of the hotel was perfect, so close to the centre and the cathedral!

It was a very hot day and the air conditioning wasn’t working, the hotel and room was so hot, Fans in the room just kept my daughter awake all night.

J'ai commandé un expresso Martini. Il a commencé à préparé le coktail et s est aperçu qu il manquait de Martini. Il n'en avait pas en réserve. Le serveur a proposé de faire un tarif happy hour. Son chef a refusé car l horaire de l happy hour était dépassé de 5 minutes résultat j ai payé plein pot un cocktail au rabais.

We have today enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea, courtesy of a Red Letter Day gift. Nice selection of sandwiches and cakes,plus scones ,jam, and cream and tea served by very friendly staff.
