I to hotel 5*!!!
Perfect hotel with supportive staff. The private beach is just across the road, which is very slightly inconvenient. The city center is nearby - just about 20 minutes by foot. Comfortable beds.
Cannot remember a thing
Clean comfortable with excellent service from all staff. Location was perfect and close to all amenities.
Absolutely nothing to not like.
Great staff, good food and fabulous location
Bravo !
Nous cherchons encore….
Excellent service and kind personnel. They are really going the extra mile to be of service! Great selection during breakfast. The sea view is great. The windows are well insulated so the traffic in front of the hotel is not as disturbing as I feared.
The rooms need a facelift lift, in particular the bathroom that smelled a bit of mold and had dirty or worn down grout lines. I want to point out that the rooms are nice and tidy, but perhaps not living up to the pictures shown.
Just stayed 10 days here on an all inclusive, twin sea view room. The room was modern and well maintained with the facilities you'd expect in a 5 star. The location is ideal just across a busy road from the beach which is free to hotel guests apart from the first 2 rows where there is a charge. There is a beach drinks service which is included in AI.Its a 10 to 15 minute walk into the old town which is busy but lovely to explore. The atmosphere is relaxed and most of the entertainment classy(apart from the dj who played club music which didn't suit the clientele. The staff are really friendly and welcoming. The food in the buffet is excellent,as us the food in the a la carte restaurant. The only negative is that there are no courtesy rooms to shower and change before leaving, you can use the spa(small)or the poolside changing rooms(wet)you can request to keep a room on but at €90 until 4pm was a bit steep, and no guarantee you'd stay in your room might be allocated another. That being said we had a lovely time
We stayed at this hotel for one week on a half-board basis and, overall, had a very pleasant experience. The hotel has a relaxing atmosphere, an excellent beachfront location, and many features that made our holiday enjoyable. Check-in was quick and efficient, and part of the staff gave us a very warm welcome. Our side sea view room offered a beautiful view, and we especially appreciated the spacious balcony, which included a practical drying rack for swimwear and towels. The hotel also provided beach bags and beach towels, which was a thoughtful touch. The beach is located just across from the hotel, and the beach area is very nice. Sunbeds are included for guests, with only the first three rows requiring an additional charge. The beach service was attentive and efficient. We also appreciated that the towels were replaced daily, and the room was stocked every day with fresh fruit, coffee, and bottled water. The swimming pool area was pleasant and beautifully lit in the evenings, creating a relaxing atmosphere. The food was another highlight of our stay—there was plenty of variety, everything was fresh and tasty, and the quality was excellent. Evening entertainment was also outstanding, with talented local musicians, including violinists and saxophonists, as well as enjoyable cocktail evenings. That said, there are a few aspects that could be improved. The hotel entrance is easy to miss, and we actually went past it the first time. The reception area does not quite match what you would expect from a five-star hotel. It feels somewhat dated, as do the guest rooms, which would benefit from some refurbishment. The hallways are also quite narrow for a hotel of this category. Another unusual feature is the games area, with billiards and table football, located right next to the reception. It can be quite noisy and doesn’t create the most elegant first impression. The bathroom was functional, with a decent shower, but it also needs some renovation. One design choice we found inconvenient was that the sink was located outside the shower and toilet area without a separating door, which reduced privacy. The beach itself could also be better maintained, as the sand and sunbeds were not as clean as expected. Another point that stood out was the dress code. Guests are informed at check-in that there is a dress code for the restaurant, which we fully support in a five-star hotel. However, this was not consistently enforced, and we often saw guests dining in beach flip-flops, wet clothes, or beachwear. Cleanliness in the common areas could also be improved. The hallways were frequently occupied by cleaning carts, vacuum cleaners, dirty sheets, and used towels, which affected the overall appearance of the hotel. It might be helpful to have a dedicated storage room on each floor for housekeeping equipment and laundry. Overall, we had a great stay and would recommend this hotel. Its biggest strengths are the fantastic location just across from the beach, the beautiful views, the excellent food, the enjoyable evening entertainment, and the friendliness and professionalism of many of the staff members. With some refurbishment and greater attention to cleanliness and hotel standards, this property could truly live up to its five-star rating.
The hydrating facial was excellent, I really enjoyed the relaxation and great experience provided by therapist Efi in the spa!
Had a 40minute facial with Sandy which was stunning. So relaxing! My skin feels amazing. She gave me a head massage which and massaged neck and shoulders, releasing the tension and made me feel really comfortable She made the experience perfect! Thank you Sandy

Very nice massasje from Sandy. Høglys recomsnded😊
I liked the massage with Sandy
Best massage and facial treatment. I’d recommend to everyone and would have it again. Efi is very talented! :)
Sandy war sehr gut und professionell
Facial, neck, arm - Such good treatment by Efi. It was very relaxing. Especially the facial treatment was over my expectations :)
Hotel is very clean , rooms cleaned daily . Room at the back of the hotel wasn’t great a view of the road and apartments also very noisy Lorrie’s and big men through the night didn’t sleep well. Room itself was ok. Food is beautiful smaller selection but always fresh in the main restaurant. Greek nights are the best with the gyros and bbq food. Cafe snacks were lovely during the day bagels and toasties. Small pools could always get a sun bed however for a five star hotel they’re not comfortable ones they need padding on them. Drinks - all drinks in the cafe bar are table service , the staff there are wonderful but overworked more staff needed. Worst hotel ever to get a drink as service is so slow waiting so long between drinks. When we arrived gone midnight no food available which is poor we were directed to walk out into the street to buy a gyros! I have never experienced this in a hotel as a late arrival, very poor considering we paid a lot fully inc . In the room no instructions of how the hotel works where things are . Found out three days later they have an app where you could order pool and beach service. The beach was lovely always a bed, sea wasn’t the cleanest a lot of plastic In it so sad to see. You cannot order food down to the beach you have to pay ? ! You have to cross a very busy road to get to the beach . Very central location 15 minute walk into rethmyno old town which is beautiful . Entertainment was ok lots of musicians Greek night was the best !
Alles👍
The staff was god overall, gave me slit of info before the massage. The massage was on spot to.
From the US, Came here for a deep tissue massage, Kostas was awesome and made me feel welcomed.
Great experience with therapist Efi. Would recommend! :)
This Hotel is AMAZING! Incredible service, Breakfast is Amazing as well!
Loved Everything!
A massage from Efi at the Spa was excellent and highly recommended
Parking was not part of the hotel and finding public parking was tricky.
Location, personnel, food, the beach - ☔, space between umbrellas, the beach beds, and the beach services
At check in the hotel said - we offer you un upgraded room .... we said ok ... Well, the room was just a little bit larger ... But no magnifying mirror in the bathroom, no shelfs, small mirror in the room, some old furniture and last but no least, there were some ants in the room, balcony and bathroom. After 10 days the hotel offered us again and upgraded room. We said again ok. And yes, the room was indeed better, with selfs and a large mirror in the room, a magnifying mirror in the bathroom, however the shower was different, not as expected. Ants were present as well. Finally, after waiting for 3 days for an answer the late check out was more or less denied - they offered 12 o clock, while we asked for check out at 13,00 with additional payment if required.
Excellent hotel. Friendly staff and perfect location. Free hotel sunbeds on the beach with waiter service.
I had an amazing experience with Sandy. The deep tissue massage was absolutely brilliant and exactly what I needed. Sandy was professional, knowledgeable, and made me feel comfortable throughout the session. She focused on all the areas of tension, and I felt so much better afterwards. I highly recommend Sandy to anyone looking for an excellent deep tissue massage. Thank you for such a fantastic treatment!
Eli did my massage and it was amazing very relaxing
An amazing Cretan longevity ritual from therapist Sandy, highly recommend
Great week with friends, lovely service and facilities
Beautiful location, staff very friendly, exception mention for Maria the Guest Relations and Nikos the porter who went out of their way to make our stay and experience amazing.
Everything and everyone exceptional!
It was great, massage with Sandy was great
From the warm welcome to the exceptional service, every detail made this stay truly special. Thank you to the wonderful team , especially Maria for booking us and incredible excursion and Nikos the porter who always smiled and was helpful, for your genuine hospitality, professionalism, and for making me feel so at home.
Great staff - very welcoming and helpful!!! Maria, the concierge perfectly planned & organised our excursions - she even followed up to inquire if all was to our satisfaction. And cannot forget Nikos the porter - super kind and attentive! Their breakfast was incredible- what a spread. Will definitely be back!!!!
Very relaxing massage excellent technique and the room was calming. We got an offer for 2 people, which was great value for money
Proximity to beach and old town
Traffic noise
What a fabulous experience. I opted for the Cretan Longevity Ritual and it was amazing! Sandy the therapist was so attentive, and immediately picked up on the tightness across my shoulders. Thank you so much Sandy! What a wonderful treat on my holiday. Thoroughly recommend. 5 star experience.
Aquila Porto Rethymno is a wonderful hotel. Every one of the staff are friendly. They all work hard. Most have worked at the hotel for many years. They all remembered us. We had breakfast and dinner which was lovely. You have the choice to eat meals inside or outside around the pool area. There is a barbecue once a week. Our room was kept spotless. The bed was very comfortable. We also had a great view. Also excellent air conditioning. And a nice TV. The beach is just opposite the hotel. This is kept clean and tidy. Also free WiFi on beach and the hotel. Finally the general manager keeps his eye on everything making sure everything is all OK.
This is a lovely hotel. Clean everywhere, from pools to bathrooms. Staff helpful, food is buffet but there is a first rate a la carte restaurant should you wish to pay. All food is so well prepared and presented that you'd believe it restaurant quality, not buffet. Drinks can be purchased from the bar but waiter service is available poolside, though a bit slow. Rooms are modern, well equiped and a reasonable size; beds firm but very comfortable, linen high quality though I found that most balconies, not all, are rather small. Also couldn't find any light near enough to table to see anything! Advise side or front sea view. Disabled access is very good throughout despite there being several layers to ground floor. The gentleman who appears to be the head porter is exceptional. I visited in early June and found most people elderly, as am I. Although there is a pool table and some other table games, I wouldn't recommend it for active school age children. Ideal spot for gentle walk to old town and harbour. Lots of taverners and shops immediately near as is the beach where the hotel has loungers available for guests.
Sijainti, aamiainen, siivous ja ystävällinen henkilökunta.
Rannan siisteys oli heikko. Tupakantuppeja ja muovioskaa aurinkovuoteiden alla.
A warm welcome when we arrived. Our room was lovely with an excellent side view to the sea. Bed was comfortable and the bathroom spotlessly clean. Buffet breakfast was one of the best we have seen. It was only a 20 min walk into the lovely old town (mainly on one level) with plenty of restaurants close to the beach but we ate at the hotels A-la-carte restaurant which served some of the best food we have ever had. We were there in April and there never seemed any problem with finding a sun lounger by the pools or o the beach. What really made it for us were the lovely staff who were so friendly and helpful. From the head waiter in the A-la-carte right down to the cleaners all the staff made us feel so welcome. his was our first visit but we will be back.
Leaving - we should have booked a longer stay.
The employees were out of this world. Hospitable, friendly, could not help you enough.
The gym was small for a 5 star. Located in the pool and spa area.

People always ask, ‘what was your hotel like?’, well a quicky summary. We stayed in a ‘Mythica’ room in a Superior Sea Room, recently upgraded and very good. One of the main reasons for this choice is that all Mythica guests can eat at the a la carte restaurant free of charge, you also receive wine and daily fruit in the room. The food in the a la carte restaurant is of a very high standard including filet steak, lobster, and a fine menu. Particular praise must be given to Vassilis and especially Tula for looking after us. The main restaurant offers a comprehensive breakfast (we ate out for Lunch) and some very good theme nights. The Hotel is clean and well maintained. So, the question Is the Hotel 5 stars? I would say if you were in a Mythica room then yes. The other rooms maybe not. However, the Hotel has a very competitive price point compared to other hotels in the area. So based on that I would say you are receiving very good value for your Pound or Euro.
REVIEW CRETE TOUR OCT 2025 We spent a week at Hotel Aquila Porto Rethymno, in the city of Rethymnon on Crete, organized by Apollo. It was a really nice vacation. Hotel Aquila Porto Rethymno has a really good location, the beach is just across the street, and the old cozy town is within walking distance from the hotel (20-25 minutes). The staff were all friendly and professional, and the hotel's breakfast buffet is simply fantastic, unparalleled. We give our warmest recommendations to the hotel Hotel Aquila Porto Rethymno, Best regards JB.
My wife & I always look forward to returning to the beautiful island of Crete to stay at the Aquila Porto Hotel, Rethymno. This was our 9th visit & we are already looking forward to returning next year. We were welcomed on our arrival at the hotel by the General Manager, Eftychis Petrakis, & the Rooms Division Manager, Natassa Pontelopoulou, who, along with the Guest Relations Manager, Nefeli, did everything they could to ensure our stay was enjoyable & memorable. All the staff are always welcoming & friendly, & are always happy to go the extra mile. As well as the friendly staff, some of whom have become friends over the 9 years we have been coming here, the other main reason that we enjoy coming here is the location of the hotel, which has easy access to the lovely sandy beach, with ample hotel sunbeds, & staff on hand to provide beach service. Of course, swimming in the warm Mediterranean Sea is wonderful. The old town of Rethymno is a short walk away, & is a delight to visit with its maze of streets with shops, restaurants & bars, & it is a must to walk around the old Venetian harbour with its light house. Our superior room on the 5th floor was comfortable with a lovely sea view, & it was always kept clean & tidy by the housekeeping staff. The buffet restaurant has a good choice of food which was well cooked & well presented, & the Head Chef, Stelios, was always on hand to advise you, especially if you have any dietary needs. We also had the choice of eating in the hotel's a la carte Piazza di Porto restaurant, which is extremely well run by the excellent captain Vasilis Vasilakis, who always made us feel welcome & special. The food & ambience in this restaurant were excellent & memorable. There is something special about this hotel which makes people come back again & again, & we will definitely be back next year.
What a wonderful place to go. We have just returned from 2 weeks at this hotel, and cannot really fault it. the room was modern and immaculately cleaned each day, great views, really friendly staff. the food in the buffet was as expected, but as we were there for 2 weeks, we chose to eat out a lot in the 2nd week. As we were there in October, the pool water was quite cold, but ok once in and climatised. the sea water was much warmer. We had a few minor issues during the stay, which the hotel sorted immediately for us. The only feedback if I could give any is that at the Beach front Anatolitiko cafe-bar service could be pretty slow through the days and evenings. We sometimes found a few hours between being served during the day, but we expect this to be the end of the season and a lot of staff probably leaving for the winder break. This is not our first visit to Crete, but our first visit to the West side of Heraklion. We found it to be much busier than the other areas than before, which was good as there are lots of things to do. I would say if you just want peace and quiet, this is not the right place as the road is busy and lots of beeping noises. if you are looking for something with glorious views and great staff, but close to amenities, this is superb!!
We have just returned from a one week stay at the Aquila Porto Rethymno, our first time in Crete. Overall, I we rated this as a nice place to stay for a one week “second holiday”, although I am not sure it would be my first choice for my “main” 2 week summer break. In more detail: The room was very nice (we were upgraded to a sea view room – thanks). The cleaning was done to a good standard each day. The only issue here was that we wished we had taken our travel kettle – we left it at home because we saw that the room had tea and coffee making facilities but this entails the use of a coffee maker to boil water, which does so, but in very small doses, meaning you had to press the button about 10 times to fill a cup. And it sounds like a jet engine taking off. The room also had 2 cups which were the smallest cups I have ever seen, useful only for a tiny shot of espresso. We asked for some normal sized cups for tea but they never arrived and I think the request was lost in translation. In the end, we bought a new kettle and 2 cups in town. The food was of a good standard, plenty enough choice and all cooked and presented well. My only concern with the meal arrangements was that the buffet restaurant is quite small so space is at a premium. You are supposed to book a slot on the app for your evening meal, which we did, but when arriving at the restaurant you are never checked against your time slot booking, so I didn’t understand at first why you need to book at all. It then dawned on me that its actually genius – all it does is ensure that guests are spaced out because you are unlikely to arrive at a different time to the one you booked. Very good. Being October, there were always sunbeds available on the rooftop sun deck or round the pool but I guess this would be more of a challenge in peak months. However, there are loads of places available on the beach, free of charge, which was great. We loved Rethymno – beautiful old town to wander around and just the right shade of “lively” for us. But I never appreciated just how big Crete is (162 miles wide apparently), so trips to anywhere else would be a bit of a trek. In the end, as we only had a week, we treated it as a nice “fly and flop” break, and it suited us just fine. My only other observation, not a slight on the hotel at all, but given how many locals use scooters as their mode of transport and given obviously that the fumes from a scooter are not filtered, I found the air quality on the main coast road outside the hotel to be pretty poor. There is a constant whiff of petrol in the air. This was another reason that I preferred it on the beach rather than the sun deck because pollution rises in the air, the beach is slightly below road level so wasn't affected much, but the sun deck in the hotel is first floor level, and so smelled like sunbathing on a petrol forecourt. Overall though, nice hotel, successful trip, and we would gladly return.
Just returned from the Aquilla Porto. The Hotel itself is lovely, just on the edge of the Old Town and over the busy road is a beautiful sandy beach. The Half Board option meant we didn't eat out much at all as the food was exceptional, lots of choice, fresh salad, fresh fruit, great lamb, salmon, feta, cakes, absolutely stuffed. Breakfast options really good too, fruit galore, fresh pancakes, crepes, omelettes. The staff really nice too, work really hard. The negatives are the traffic noise that constantly surrounds the hotel at all times of day. The cost of wine and drinks from the bar (we could never find a wine price list, not even on the app that you book you sign up too when you arrive) The wine prices seem to fluctuate each night and a draught beer in nigh on 7 euro's. I am sure if prices were lower then guests would spend more at the Hotel. The graffiti that greeted us on the drive in from the airport which adorns the streets on the ride in to Rethymno is a detriment to the beautiful Old Town. Hopefully some of the extortionate Environmental Tax of 15 euro's per night will go towards cleaning this up.
Outstanding service from all staff dining and housekeeping lovely people. Great location . Food beautifully presented and cooked with a wide variety. One gripe had to pay 5 euros for a bottle of water to have with our meal or go thirsty! Beach nearby with sunbeds free unless you venture to the front 2 rows we went to the beach at 4 30 and we're told if we used the beds at the front which were all empty that we had to pay the full day rate of 15 euros ! Entertainment average lovely bar staff. Very hit and miss WiFi rarely accessible in room on 3rd floor. Long transfer from airport arrived after. Midnight no hot drinks or food available till breakfast . Overall a positive experience
Alles super!
The hotel location, food, service and rooms were absolutely perfect. We have just returned after spending ten days here and we have had a fabulous holiday. The rooms are a good size and spotlessly clean. We had a balcony with a sea view, which was just wonderful. The food was buffet style and the choice was amazing, you could have completely different dishes every day. The staff could not do enough for you! Every member of staff made you feel special. The ladies cleaning the rooms were brilliant too. The hotel is easily within walking distance of the harbour and old town of Rethymno. In fact it is in a perfect location, far enough out of the town centre. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.
My partner and I stayed here for a week and have loved it. The hotel is clean, full of facilities, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. We went bed and breakfast with a standard room, which was good value for money. The breakfast was excellent with a lot of options to choose from. The hotel puts on some sort of entertainment every evening at their bar, and have a lot of activities to do during the day. There is a spa on site that offers a variety of treatments and a small gym. The hotel has a beach section with loungers and parasols with plenty of space for guests. On our last day we were able to use all of the facilities after we checked out before we left. The town of Rethymno is lovely and has a lot going on, but isn't too rowdy. There are many restaurants and bars with a lot of variety to choose from, and plenty of places to book excursions. We were very pleased with the location as this seemed perfect for us as a couple. The staff clearly take a lot of pride in the hotel, and we very much enjoyed our stay.
The hotel is not a 5-star hotel as advertised – more like 3.5 to 4 stars at best. The pool was very small, so if you plan to stay here, expect to swim in the sea instead. The breakfast, however, was really good, with plenty of options, and it was one of the highlights of our stay. We traveled as a family and booked two rooms. Our children’s room (ages 23, 20, and 13) felt very small, so we asked for a larger one. The reception promised to let us know when a room became available, and when it did, they called us and offered to move our belongings. My husband said that was fine, but that we would come along as well. When we arrived, they had already moved almost everything—except our daughter’s Prada bag worth €2,500. It was completely gone. We searched together with the staff, went through laundry, and spoke with several employees, but the hotel did not take us seriously. After many discussions and emails, they refused to compensate us. One staff member even questioned whether we had actually brought the bag and asked us to prove it—despite the fact that it was only our second day at the hotel and our daughter had barely had the chance to use it in Crete. So our advice: never leave valuables in the room, or better yet, don’t bring expensive items here at all. There’s a real risk they might disappear, and the hotel takes no responsibility—even when it happens under their supervision. Unfortunately, this turned into a real disappointment, especially since we are still waiting for the hotel’s insurance company to get back to us regarding compensation. The hotel is now blaming the insurance company for not responding, instead of taking responsibility themselves. Truly sad to see guests being treated this way. This has never happened to us before in my 25 years of frequent traveling and need to share with other future guests.
The hotel is contemporary design and very clean. The room and bathroom were a nice size and the shower was good. It's worth booking a sea view. The food was really good. Staff were all friendly and helpful. There are plenty of sunbeds on the beach so no need for early starts. Fantastic location. Just a short walk to the old town and across the road from the beach. The only negative was the cost of the drinks, €10.5 for a beer and small still water.. We decided to not drink at the hoteI as we were so close to so many bars. I think it's a pity as everything else was perfect.
The hotel is brilliant for location to the beach and the town of Reythmono. The staff are friendly and professional and offer an excellent level of service.
On this occasion the bathroom shower needs updating with a walk in shower and removing of the outdated bath.
We have stayed in this hotel for many years and always found it a comfortable and enjoyable experience each time. The room we chose was the"Mythica" Unfortunately, the bathroom shower was of poor condition. The shower rail was broken, so it would not lock into position. The glass shower screen was totally inadequate to the extent that after a shower, water was covering the marble floor ( in itself a safety hazard) when wet. The sealant around the bath and shower was cracked and requires refurbishment. The room itself was of a high standard and was clean and tidy and well equipped. Room service from a housekeeping perspective was also very good. The staff are excellent and attentive to your needs. It was a pity that this was let down by the bathroom, we have stayed in other rooms within this hotel where the bathroom was of a much higher standard. For example: Walk in shower and refurbished bathroom that appeared recently fitted. It would supplement the type of rooms advertised in this hotel package if the bathrooms were refurbished to a high standard. But overall this is a great hotel with helpful and friendly staff, which is why we return each year.
The location is perfect if you want to be within walking distance of town and to enjoy a nice beach. For those things this place deserves five stars. The hotel itself, left me swaying between 3-4 stars. We chose the location because previously we have stayed at Aquila Rithymna Beach and wanted to be walking distance of town for a change. The room was freshly decorated, clean and spacious, though ‘sea view’ is only from balcony and without a net curtain, impossible to feel privacy in room once curtains open, or see the sea. Bed was very comfortable. Shower was good. Great to have a nespresso machine but no pods supplied (tight 😂), they could have left just two to start you off 🥴 (you can buy for 2 euros per pod from reception - or get a box from the supermarket for about 4 euros) Sachets of coffee in room but with no kettle (seems silly). We asked for one! Our room was near the lifts, you would not want to be so close, if you like to sleep late. Guests are always waiting for a lift so you will be woken by their noise and lift noise. Useful to have clothes hanging and pegs on balcony. Adequate hanging space but not great for longer dresses. Every time we had a question for reception, they started their responses with a defensive/ negative tone, rather than helpful, It was off-putting. All in all, we did not really feel staff were as engaged/cheerful as other reviews have suggested ( this improved later in week), except for cleaning staff ( excellent) and a few dining staff, who work hard to create some order when at times they were obviously less than happy and stressed. The service is definitely not 5 star. We rarely felt welcomed as a guest, unlike at other hotels we have stayed in. Breakfast can be chaotic unless you go early; if it rains a long queue forms, as they have to shut the outside area. The manager was organising table finding as quickly as possible. Choices are good. Dinner was easier if you go by 7pm. The area is quite small and when busy, dishes are not always replaced quickly. Salads were very good and plentiful. Sometimes main courses were not extensive so we ate a lot of salad, cheese and fruit. Bread was not always fresh and Greek pastries at breakfast did not live up to usual Greek standard which was disappointing. I wondered if they were either not being stored correctly, or kept too long. Wine is always more expensive in a hotel but the prices were higher than we have experienced in other hotels and 5 euros for a plastic bottle of water, is an unnecessary mark up! We loved the ease of finding a sun-bed on the beach. We loved being able to lunch at some of the superb restaurants in town ( unfortunately the food we ate out, cast a shadow on the hotel food). We missed a bar area inside to get a drink and mingle. You wait a long time for service at the outside bar area. Would we stay again at this hotel, probably not! But your experience might be different if you are full-board, or have upgraded room further, to a deluxe, or suite. We were glad we were not AI ( lunches are just average but service better than in evening). We even contemplated skipping an evening meal to go out and enjoy excellent food. And yes, to confirm another review, the average age of guests is fairly old - but there are so many levels/steps and trip hazards, so if you have mobility issues, take care. We saw a couple of people slipping over while we were there. Evening entertainment was soulless.
We have just returned home after a great two weeks at the Aquila Porto. What a brilliant place to stay. Very close to many local amenities and the town. The staff were brilliant, reception and porter staff were very helpful, I couldn't say enough how good they were. The restaurant staff, again excellent and helpful, all hard working. Plenty of choice of different food, yum yum. The room and hotel was very clean. All in all a really good place to stay. The staff made the holiday a great holiday. Thank you
The hotel is in a fantastic location with its own beach across the road. The staff were all excellent, very friendly and helpful, a special mention to Waitress Gianna and also to the Executive Chef Stylainos who was excellent regarding my Gluten free diet, he brought me out a special pudding every night and Gluten free pancakes for breakfast, made me feel very special. We had booked a sea view room, the sea view isn't a big sea view which I was expecting from the photos of this room, as we were at the back of the horse shoe shape so looked through the sides onto other balconies then the sea. Our room was clean and spacious enough with a large balcony with a drier on the wall for towels and beach wear. Bed big and comfy. The bathroom consisted of two separate doors, shower and toilet with the sink just outside the doors. We did find there wasn't enough hanging and it wasn't long enough for dresses. We were half board and found the food excellent and varied with plenty of choice and all labelled with allergies, as mentioned above the Executive Chef was excellent, he made sure I knew what I could have. Others mentioned the drinks being expensive but they are no more expensive than any hotel. We enjoyed that we could walk along the esplanade into Rethymno with it's Venetian harbour, lovely little lanes full of small shops and taverns.
I had a very nice experience. The hotel is very ideally located near the sea as well as the markets. Still it is very peaceful. We stayed in a superior sea view room (mythica), on the 6th floor. Very nice view of the sea, that I enjoyed most of the time of the day till late night. We had all inclusive, with plenty and varieties of food with tasty deserts. Baklava, fruits and good wines were waiting when we first entered the room. The staff were very kind and generous. Whatever we wanted, we got immediately. The reception staff were also very kind , helpful and generous. We are very much impressed and want to stay there as early as possible, in near future. I appreciate greek hospitality with their always smiling faces.
GOOD POINTS. Central location, great for accessing bars and restaurants, and the old town. Beautiful ground floor. Cafe and bar staff very pleasant. Porters very helpful. Fantastic ala carte restaurant, most dishes free to Mythica guests, this was included as part of our superior room booking. Activities lady, Elena, is a fantastic personality and I enjoyed her exercises classes. She is a real asset to the hotel. BAD POINTS. I paid for a superior room to guarantee a full sea view. The view was good once you stood on the balcony, the sea was not visible from inside the room. Due to the horse shoe shape arrangement of the hotel building our balcony was directly opposite other balconies. Our room was nice but the carpet in the corridor outside was in very poor condition. There was also a strange smell in the room at times, I was pretty sure this was a damp smell. We left our bathroom door open most of the time and that alleviated the issue. The breakfast room was a bit chaotic. The food generally was average, apart from the ala carte, as previously stated. I developed a sickness bug on our second day, this didn't last long, we discovered that a lot of other guests were also affected. I don't blame this on the hotel as one sick person can infect many others in a large hotel. On our last day I realised neither the bedroom telephone or emergency cord in the bathroom were working. If I had been more seriously ill or by myself this would have been very frightening. I reported this to reception on checking out but the receptionist didn't seem very concerned.
Fint hotel med nem adgang til stranden
Dear Ladies & Gentlemen, It was our, me and my wife, second stay at Aquila Porto Rethymno and we only can repeat ourselves. Excellent, brilliant etc. All the staff is highly skilled, friendly, helpful and with good sense of humour. And spa - a lovely young lady Efi - thank you for such a good massage! A feeling after 85 min Cretan Massage was just heavenly! May all your days begin with a smile on your faces, a song in your hearts and joy in your soul. Thank you for making our vacation absolutely perfect! With best regards Gunnar&Aita Lõhmuste (30.08.-13.09.2025, room no 226)
Breakfast was great, beach access excellent
This is our second visit to this hotel and unfortunately had a few problems. The air conditioning was our first issue as the controller is overridden by reception !! apart from increasing the temperature in the room, we had an additional problem with not being able to go down to 16 degrees and a slow fan, a week later maintenance managed resolve the problem. Our room selection was a bath with a shower but unfortunately it’s an old curved bath so no flat area where the shower is ! So I would suggest to others just go for a shower only room. The location is excellent and the food good and the staff nice, My partner unfortunately went down with a serious virus 🦠 luckily it was near the end of our holiday, I should have realised something was up when sanitiser machines appeared on every floor. I have contacted TUI a few days ago but no response. Phil&Sandx
Our second time at the Aquilo Porto. Great location and excellent private beach. Although the food is good, it can be a bit repetative. Not sure this is a 5 star hotel as its design means many balconies are in the shade or have limited sea views even though they charge extra for this. I have marked the hotel down as they failed to notify guests of a serious bug doing the rounds (one waiter told us over 70 rooms were affected. My wife and I caught it and over a week later I am still ill.
We were very satisfied with the hotel. We also received an upgrade to the Penthouse, which was very good. In addition we had another room on the top floor directly to the beach. The hotel provided lots of complementary drinks, fruit and sweets in both rooms. Only negative was two of the staff in the breakfast room. They looked like they had very bad days at work, not friendly service at all.
What a hotel! I can’t recommend it highly enough. Having been in the travel industry for the past 25 years, I’ve been fortunate to visit many destinations and stay at a wide range of hotels — but this one truly stands out. From the moment I arrived, the level of service was nothing short of exceptional. The entire team, including the General Manager, go above and beyond to ensure every guest receives a truly high-end experience. Their teamwork and dedication are evident in every detail — they work tirelessly to deliver excellence. The hotel is also ideally located in Rethymno, making it a perfect base for exploring the area. The restaurant offers a consistently high standard of food, and the à la carte menu is truly exceptional. I’d especially like to mention the lovely Toula, whose service was amazing. The bar staff, particularly Stella, are a real credit to the hotel — always friendly, attentive, and professional. If you're looking for a relaxing beach holiday, look no further. While the hotel is conveniently close to town, it also boasts direct access to a beautiful sandy beach. Free sunbeds with plenty of shade are always available — no need to rush down early in the morning to reserve one! The beach bar staff are always on hand to provide drinks and fruit on several days, adding to the laid-back, vibe, beautiful sandy beach and sea to swim. We stayed in a sea-view room, which was bright, airy, and very spacious. Traveling with our 20-year-old son, we had three beds in the room and still had plenty of space, along with a modern walk-in shower. What impressed us most, however, was how the hotel catered to our son’s dietary needs. He has PKU (a protein intolerance), and I’ve never stayed at a hotel before that took his dietary requirements so seriously. The chef went out of his way to ensure every meal was not only suitable but also varied and enjoyable. This level of care and attention meant the world to us. I truly cannot recommend this hotel highly enough. It offers the perfect combination of location, outstanding service, excellent food, and genuine hospitality. We can’t wait to return! If you're looking for quality, service, and a memorable stay, this hotel should be at the top of your list
This was a first visit to Crete. I was expecting a quiet, small town, but was pleasantly surprised by how interesting, buzzy, friendly and beautiful Rethymnon was. Our hotel has been fabulous. The staff are so friendly and helpful and our room cleaner was such a lovely lady, always ready to listen to our questions and answer if possible. The beds are very very comfortable and a choice of pillows. Aircon works well and was needed in the hour before sleep. Shower room was spacious and had lovely body wash and conditioner. Plenty of room for our luggage and clothes in the storage area. Free safe (which is unusual these days!). Good sized fridge and the kettle, although a little bit unusual in so far as it looks more like a coffee machine, did the job it was supposed yo. The food choices were varied and some beautiful dishes to choose from. The desserts were mini masterpieces and almost too good to eat. Chocolate fountain every evening and lots of cheese choices for a cheeseboard. There is only one complaint. Being teetotal, my husband and I find it more cost effective to go half board. In every hotel I have ever been in, you could order a carafe of water to drink with your meal and I have never been charged. The alternative is to take my own alcohol free drink into the restaurant with no complaints from the staff. Not so at this hotel. You either ordered a bottle of still water which was €5 for a litre bottle or went without. A pack of six 1.5 litre bottles of still water in the supermarket was €2.15 so the mark up is ridiculous. It was such a shame as this left a sour taste in the mouth after finding every other aspect of this hotel and Rethmno unforgettable for the right reasons. Even so, we have already decided to book another visit here next May and hope that the water situation is changes. All in all though this is a fabulous hotel and I agree with all of the other wonderful reviews.
Really enjoyed our week's holiday here. So much to see , hotel well located and plenty to explore around. We managed to have coffees & visit bars each day& night with only one repeat visit ! Likes Location / access to beach over road (& free sunbeds !) Location - easy walk to harbour and old town. Hotel is well appointed , nice restaurant & staff attitude throughout was excellent. As we arrived late for evening meal - Hotel provided voucher for use in their restaurant . Less - liked Hotel rooms a bit tired , but clean & comfortable. Over an hour from airport ..by taxi. Entertainment is very low key and may not suit those looking for more ' buzz'. Venetian Harbour - whilst lovely was only place we were constantly called in by staff/ owners ( so we avoided in the end) Having visited many Greece & Islands previously, this area was unknown to us and without doubt , overall the hotel & location had much to offer hence fully deserving of highest rating.
Location, location, location you don’t need the all-inclusive option. There’s plenty of cheap restaurants and bars all around.
To some people, the pool was cold to me was fine
My partner and I have recently come back from this lovely hotel! The location is perfect, it's right on the beach front and only a 15-minute walk from the Old Town. All-inclusive is well worth it, as there are plenty of tasty options day and night to choose from. We ate at the à la carte restaurant one night, and the food was delicious! Drink options are pretty varied at the hotel too. There are two outdoor pools, and although sunbed space is quite limited around the pool, there is also a lovely, clean, and sandy beach over the road with free sunbeds and umbrellas. Thr rooms are also well equipped and cleaned/tidied daily. The most standout thing about this hotel though, is the staff. They are all so friendly, hard-working and attentive. Our interactions with staff from all departments - domestic, catering, bar, reception and management, was always positive, and they were always cheerful and accommodating. This holiday was really special to my partner and I as we got engaged whilst we were away. The general manager ever so kindly upgraded us, so that we had the opportunity to spend a day/night at their sister hotel which was also very nice. This was such a wonderful, unexpected gesture, which made our engagement and holiday even more memorable and enjoyable. We would definitely return to this hotel, and highly recommend it to others visiting Rethymno too!
