Lovely meal but very slow service. Friendly staff
I would have liked the option of fruit and yogurt for breakfast but the cooked option was deli out.
Location
Nothing
Beautiful and well-run historic inn with an excellent breakfast included in the room rate.
No complaints. Everything was excellent.
Great location, excellent food, good room standard
Nothing
We had a lovely large room decorated with intriguing (fish with hats!) wallpaper. Dinner was exceptional - inventive, delicious and beautifully presented. Breakfast was generous and tasty. And all the staff we met were genuinely friendly not just 'hotel' friendly.
Nothing. We were completely happy.
Beautiful design rooms with attention to detail, excellent breakfast a very pleasant stay 😁
Nothing not to like
Great room and good selection of wine
Bit of a wait for breakfast
We love hathersage anyway and The George highlights how special it is. Really lovely interior, good atmosphere, gorgeous food and drinks.

Parking was a nightmare. Not guaranteed..
Interesting architecture; central location
Room was pretty dark (inevitable probably given its age)
Nice location and property, good parking
Weird , Cappuccino is considered a specialty coffee lol so they charge extra at breakfast
Nice location
Rooms had little character, low water pressure, WiFi was very slow
Excellent location. Very attractive decor. Friendly staff.
Nothing.
Very nice hotel and had a fan in the room and at 35 degrees was a delight to see when i walked in the room.
Excellent location, lovely room, very helpful and friendly staff, delicious food! Highly recommended.
Wonderful location, fabulous staff and excellent food
Nothing
Lovely room, excellent food and great staff
Everything was excellent
Great location, lovely atmosphere with the restaurant, and really excellent service. We made a few quirky requests and they didn’t hesitate to accommodate any of them. Thanks
Nothing
The bar and restaurant were nice and the parking was great. The breakfast and other food was good also
Everything was great
The breakfast wasok. My personal preference would be to have poached eggs a little less cooked. Black pudding and bacon very salty. Needed something wetter like tinned tomatoes as I don’t eat beans.
The room, the tv worked, the food was great and the service was good. The car park was extremely useful to me.
My first coffee machine didn't work and leaked everywhere. My replacement also leaked, and I couldn't get it to work. This could be because I'm a 74-year old granny, but I tried my best. The staff were helpful but simply swapped the faulty machine for another room. It would be helpful if you kept in a stock a supply of instant coffee packets for such an occasion, as having coffee in my room is a key factor in my hotel choice, and I never managed to get one.
Staff were super friendly, room was lovely and the breakfast was delicious.
Character property. Good restaurant and convenient for Chatsworth House.
Old property means that the walls between rooms are very thin and you can hear your immediate neighbours talking (complete conversations) and coughing and so not private at all.

The George was in an ideal location for my stay. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel itself was very clean and tidy and exceeded my expectations. I would recommend and would stay again. The food was excellent especially the continental breakfast.
Nothing
The place is delightful and beautifully decorated, with very lovely, cozy rooms. The restaurant is excellent, so there is no need to look elsewhere for meals; the dishes—from breakfast to dinner—are delicious and expertly prepared.
The room was perfect. Loved the bathtub. The location was great for hiking too.
The breakfast wasn’t great.
Staff were exceptional. Room was modern and spotless. Great chilled atmosphere in the evenings and the food was superb and beautifully presented. A brilliant place to stay.
Breakfast was delicious with quality ingredients. my only observation was the waiting time . I realise the breakfast is cooked with care and in rotation which is fine but it took around 30 minutes for my continental breakfast to arrive. No major problem but maybe a little too long for something like that? Our room was also backing onto a staff car park and bin area. On the first night the bins were being cleaned late and cars were sounding their horns after 11. Bins were also being moved around in the early morning which disturbed our sleep, however I realise nothing can be done about this and it did not spoil an excellent stay.
Manager was extremely aware of his guests and did everything to ensure an excellent experience was provided
Hotel needs air con
Breakfast was very good. Location was good. Staff very helpful and polite.
The bathroom was a bit small especially for a family room and no surface area for toiletries. Parking was tight. Dinner was very slow the first night. Much better the following night.
Excellent food for evening meal. Very good, spacious room. Plenty of helpful staff around.
Very long waits for food at both evening meal & breakfast (30 min wait at breakfast which meant we had to leave later than planned for our day's walk)
Rooms spotlessly clean and beds very comfortable. Lounge, bar, restaurant & outdoor courtyard all lovely. Most of the staff very friendly.
Whilst the food in the restaurant is very good, the service is very slow - both at breakfast & evening meals. It’s not a buffet breakfast so if you’re heading out you need to allow time as you can’t just have a quick breakfast! There’s plenty of waiting staff so perhaps they need more kitchen staff?!
Great comfortable spacious room, superb food both for breakfast and dinner, charming helpful waitresses, good location for walking in the peaks.
Nothing
A great building, nice rooms and comfortable bed.
The breakfast was good but not excellent. No one offered a refill coffee for example. Although the staff in the hotel were generally friendly, the staff serving breakfast hardly smiled.
Cleanliness, location, decor and staff
Nothing - the only negative was how hot the room was despite opening windows and a fan being in the room.
Great location .. friendly staff lovely room
Breakfast was very disorganised had to wait nearly an hour to get served and receive our orders .. the fire alarm went off at 3.20 am and it was quite frightening that there was no staff in the lobby .. we were informed nobody slept on the premises during the night upon check-in but if there had been a fire god knows what would have happened somebody did eventually come to say all was fine but no idea who he was ..
The food was excellent and the staff
The position of the George within Hathersage
WiFi was super bad (firstly I couldn’t connect the wifi until they gave me the staff wifi but then there is almost no signal at all in my room - 14) The room was super noise so it’s almost impossible for me to fall asleep. Overall a very bad living experience if not the worst one.
As above
Fantastic hotel with exceptional staff throughout
WiFi a bit patchy
Dinner was excellent, the room was very clean, the shower pressure was great, we had a fan as the room doesn’t have air con and despite the warm temperatures we slept very well.
breakfast was disappointing as my food had been left on long under the heating lights and my poached eggs were hard, bacon dry etc Maybe not enough staff in the AM ?
The Lady C Bronte suit is so good with the stained glass window and bathtub. We felt like royalty for the night!
Food was excellent and nothing was too much trouble. The George has been taken over since our last visit and has continued to maintain its high standards in every respect. We first stayed at The George in August1991 and have been several times over the years.
Food staff / location
The beds are very hard no topper
Great old coaching inn, staff were friendly and attentive, the food was amazing and the village is a great place to stay.
Nothing
Friendly staff . Good food particularly breakfast
Location in town really nice. Room nicely furnished.
Portable air conditioning unit in room very noisy. Room was very warm without the unit switched on. Room above garden bar area. Breakfast was very disappointing - it was included in package but from the menu it looked very overpriced. No choice to have cereals or toast. The waitress was not that helpful at breakfast. Porridge came with a jam/fruit already mixed and was very sweet. Need to improve choices.
We had an all too short stay at the George (one night before our son's graduation) and have already decided we want to go back for a longer stay. It was delightful 😊
The bed was massive and so comfortable. The shower over the bath very powerful and the toiletries smelled divine. I had dinner and it was very tasty and well presented. The longbow app is marvelous for discounts, free gin and tonic, what's not to like? The staff are very welcoming.
My husband said the beer wasn't well kept . He had to return a pint of Jaipur as it had turned vinegary and the others were not to good either.
Location, atmosphere, decor, staff are so attentive. Plenty of GF options on the menu, food was served to a very high standard and extremely tasty!!!’
Prices of the room per night are very expensive, although we got a last minute deal for a standard room.
Great location and lovely food and welcome.
Breakfast service was very relaxed. Food was great when it came.
Excellent location and good breakfast
For the price we paid the room, it had no air con and it was sooooooooooooo hot. They provided a below par fan and due to this had to open the bedroom windows which was very loud with passing cars due to being on the main road, so we had a terrible sleep. Again for the price, having to pay for coffee at breakfast was liberty.
Food & Accommodation outstanding. Staff fabulous.
Beds were like sleeping on a slab of concrete 😴
The location, the staff (Lewis)
I am 80 and my wife 78. We arrived at 22.30 (after a wedding) even appropriate)during very hot weather. The welcome was good but when we went to the room it was very ‘stuffy’ and stifling hot (31 deg C). No air con, small fan and windows only partially opening. It was not possible to remain in the room safely in my opinion. We were shown an alternative room but this was if anything worse from a heat perspective which Lewis, the senior onsite staff member, agreed. After further discussion with no viable solution forthcoming we decided to abort any check-in and drive home (100 miles) since the car at least had air conditioning. Lewis was unable to offer any refund ( which we think would have been appropriate) but agreed to discuss with management if we could move the reservation to a later date as an alternative and let us know. We have yet to get a response.
Breakfast
Working out how to charge the electric car. Getting (yet another) app downloaded took time.
Boom of electronic bass & drum in sound system under my room going on until 11pm, preventing me from getting to sleep. Something really should be done about this dismal piped 'music'.
Lovely location, staff friendly, room nicely decorated, good breakfast selection. The bath was great and filled quickly.
Bed was huge but really uncomfortable making it hard to sleep. Would be been nice to have conditioner in the toiletries offer and a fridge in the room. The window didn’t close properly so was woken a few times in the night by traffic as our room was on the front. There didn’t appear to be any offer of any room service.
Cooked English was good
We waited longer than other guests despite a straight forward order. The mashed advicado carried enough chilli to be guacamole- too much for breakfast and the coffee was poor. The designated smoking area is immediately outside the front door, with the doors to the outside eating area also open there is a through draught that carries the secondhand smoke through the tables in the line of fire. The room was adjacent to the kitchen area and very noisy, it was also hot and the radio alarm went off at 02:00. Perhaps the work of a bit of a joker occupying the room previously.
Beautiful room, delicious breakfast provided. Is a lovely location for eating yummy food, then hicking up to Stanage :)
Not much at all. Just wish to have stayed longer, but would have been over budget.
We absolutely loved the relaxed atmosphere it has, we loved the food, it was also a very clean place and they really spruced our room up nicely. The staff were very welcoming and accommodating. They all had a very kind and friendly manner and were always happy to see us. We would especially like to thank Vicky the receptionist for her very kind and warm personality and her helpful and friendly service. We spoke to her on the phone prior to coming and had some lovely conversations at the venue itself. This was a very special visit for us because it was our honeymoon. My bride really enjoyed staying here. So it is the perfect place for newly weds to wind down and enjoy each other.
The only thing I would point out is that the mattresses on the beds are very firm. We are used to sleeping on a mattress which is firm with softness on top. It might be a hybrid mattress. That’s probably the only thing we would change.
The room and the staff were great.
The food in the restaurant could have been better.
Location convenient but as expected next to a busy road
We booked last minute and had a room accessed next to the kitchen very much back of house and had to close windows as road noise and with no air con or fan the room was very stuffy.
Location
Dinner was expensive, slightly over cooked and had been sat somewhere before serving
Charming reception staff
Bar service top slow.

Nothing
Beautiful
Nothing not to like
Good location, atmosphere and attentive staff.
Marked down because the first night's room was cold, had no spare blanket so I wore daytime clothes in bed. Good compensation offered and the second night in a different room was a very good experience
Great reception even though we got in late past check in time (11:30) we were greeted very well. Excellent location
Good location , good size room and nicely decorated. Good breakfast .
It was hot ... the tv was difficult to manage.
The room was beautiful and very comfortable. The staff were excellent. Food excellent. Thank you all
Nothing
Dinner was great but breakfast was average
Not cooked very well
Beautiful old building, wonderful decor. The lounge area was very comfortable
The bed and pillows were hard and our bathroom was rather small.
I loved this old coach house. It was filled with of old world charm. The room was excellent- we didn’t actually have a meal in the restaurant but our breakfast was delicious, all prepared to order. I wished I could stay longer
Everything was great
Lovely property in the Peak District . Staff were lovely and the room was very clean and had all the necessities. Dinner at night was fabulous
Bathroom was lovely and clean but again a shower bath combination. I wish they would just stick to a lovely walk in shower and save the bath for those rooms with a bigger footprint . They really can be difficult getting in and out of . Breakfast was nice but you only had the choice of one selection so you couldn’t have for example cereal then a hot dish .
Staff were incredibly helpful and great
The bath in the bedroom
Chips where not double fried
Meravigliosa locanda storica perfettamente ristrutturata, calda e accogliente.
The welcome was exceptional (Vicky on reception). A superb dinner (steak). Safe parking behind a barrier. Late checkout (1100).
Lovely place to stay. Beautiful room good food courteous staff.
Nothing
It was nice and clean and very comfortable
Food offering was poor, breakfast very disappointing
We really enjoyed our stay at the George. The room was very comfortable, great shower and bath. Breakfast was really good quality.
We stayed in a room facing the road which is a major a road so very noisy. If you want a quieter room I would specify a room at the back of the hotl.
Lovely breakfast but very slow service. Lovely hotel and great staff we stayed in the suite room 3 and have to say the bed was probably the most uncomfortable one I’ve slept in.
Room was very big, beautifully decorated. It had all the necessities like kettle and coffee machine. Breakfast was freshly cooked. Had dinner couple of times and was superb. Atmosphere in the dinning area was excellent. Everyone was very friendly.
Can't think of any better improvements. Maybe if the hotel can provide some sort of taxi service as taxis are not easily available in the area.
Location, parking, upgrade
Solo travellers not really considered.
Room nicely decorated, comfortable and clean. Nice products in bathroom
We waited 30 minutes for our breakfast to arrive from ordering it. The tea came quickly but was cold by the time the food arrived
Location
Window looked onto the Bins. You could not have a lie in as staff emptying glass bottles into the bins.
The Food. The room names. The L,' Orangerie reed diffuser in bathroom. The message on the window, tears of yesteryear.
The pruce of a guest for us £260 for Friday night, but tge same room on Saturday by Expedia was £118. They repeatedly said it was her booking when it was my booking. It is a fractious family siituation . The Room John Eyre, the fishy wall paper hard to establish why. The circular mirror could have touch lighting.
The rooms were very comfortable and the ambience in the restaurant, bar and patio were very nice. We enjoyed the food in the evening very much. Breakfast was also good.
It was regrettable that the "free" breakfast drinks only included tea or filter coffee, with cappuccino requiring an additional payment. That at least should have been communicated to us in advance (although we would have still stayed), but really seems like unnecessary penny pinching given the cost of the free food.
Lovely property, large room with excellent facilities in the room. Very pleasant staff. Breakfast was exceptional. We ate dinner at restauant which was excellent.
Nothing
Delicious and high quality food
Noise the first night caused by late night staff leaving
The room was comfortable, the bar and restaurant were lovely. Parking on site as well
There was nothing to complain about
Great location and beautiful building
Close proximity to incredibly busy and noisy road
Friendly helpful staff. Good location. Safe car park.
Spotlessly clean. Friendly staff. Great location. Large bedroom with nice quirky decor. Nice breakfast.
A little hot and stuffy throughout the hotel and room. Bed was hard. Couldn't get served at the bar. Tried on two occasions, but gave up and went across road instead. Was busy, but even so.
Loved the staff from the lady in reception to the great barman and all in between
Had dinner in the restaurant and thought the food was OK but expected it to be a bit more the room rate was expensive but was a bank holiday
The stay exceeded my expectations. The food was excellent and I felt very happy with my stay (the best hotel on this holiday)
Nothing.
Great location with nice bedrooms.
Excellent staff.
Interior decor very good. Parking facilities excellent. Good food and excellent choice.
Wood dowel across bathroom door too high . Needs shelf under bathroom mirror in bedroom.
Great location , staff friendly rooms fabulous. Lovely breakfast .
fresh cooked,
perhaps cereal pastrys etc.
