The staff! Maggie, Bobbie and Alfie were lovely, friendly and helpful. My room had everything I needed and was very comfortable and spacious. Great location, close to stops for the excellent bus service and easy walk to the train station.

This is our first stay at the little John since the new owners have taken over and it was perfect. The staff could'nt done any more to make it a great stay they were really freindly always ready to help, the room was nice and warm, very clean . The breakfast was good and we liked how you could serve yourself. Good luck to the new owners and hope to be back.

Breakfast great if you like full English but not much else on offer (like fruit, yoghurt, musli, croissants, fresh rolls, sourdough bread etc.). Coffee substandard - only choice was coffee pouches (like teabags) you brew with hot water from an urn.

Great, pub-based location right in the centre of Hathersage. Huge, spacious room with a comfy bed and great value for a short stay in the Peak District. The pub had a good, friendly atmosphere too

Breakfast was a little chaotic! The food itself was lovely but it was self service and we kept having to ask for stuff that hadn’t been put out - milk, butter etc.

The room was fine and the bathroom was very nice. Little John is centrally located in the village; near a small grocery shop, bakery, and other interesting restaurants and shops.

The mattresses in the room died a long time ago and should have been replaced. The bedside cabinet and lamp were dusty - the lower shelf had a thick layer of dust on it. Breakfast was ok but the music was too loud and not good music.

The room had a fusty smell, the TV couldn’t be used as the remote had been stolen… staff tried to help but couldn’t. I found someone else’s toenails beside my bed.

Room super clean. They even helped us get luggage to room! Pub lively. Pool table! Dog friendly.

Die Zimmeraufteilung war etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig. Das Bad war mit Fenster zur Straße raus und hatte drei Stufen. Das Schlafzimmer lag davor und hatte nur ein Dachfenster, das man nicht verdunkeln konnte.

The location is great for a visit, it is in the heart of the Peak District. The bar and menu were excellent with a good choice of food dishes.

The bathroom needs a few maintenance issues to be addressed. The round toilet seat on a square toilet is visually wrong. The skirtings need replacing around the shower too.

Well equipped and comfortable room. Coffee bags were a welcome change to freeze dried sachets. Good buffet breakfast with fresh fruit and cooked options.

The room was great apart from the toilet hadn’t been cleaned.

Unfortunately breakfast was hit with power cuts each day, which meant waiting for items, the water boiler didn’t work so we had to use a kettle to make all the drinks. Staff were lovely but not very visible so had to wait till they appeared to repeatedly tell them the power had tripped again. Due to power tripping we couldn’t make toast.

Breakfast was lovely. Room was cozy. Pet friendly was a plus.

The chef went out of his way to rectify the lack of communication. The accommodation was pleasant. Its location was good.

An email was sent requesting a vegan breakfast. As advised I requested this again when checking in. No one had told the kitchen. The shower water consistently cut out in two showers. The food eaten of an evening was unsatisfactory. Also staff served a beef pasta dish to a customer who had ordered a vegan dish. Imagine if this had been an allergen issue rather than ethical. The price of the booking suggested the stay would be better.

Set in a great location, new building/ new rooms; bathroom and rooms are well equipped, lovely staff

Wasn’t super clean and the bed was tiny with a not so great mattress.

We waren op doorreis met 3 volwassenen voor 1 nacht in een gezamenlijke kamer met 3 bedden. Mooie ruime kamer, goed verzorgd en ruime badkamer. Er zit ook een pub bij en een restaurant (overigens niet hier gegeten) Ontbijtbuffet was netjes verzorgd.

Beautiful building and well decorated. Staff friendly and pleasant. Breakfast was nice, too.

The ‘dungeon’ room was a bit sad-looking. Scuffs on wall, scuffs all over skirting boards, terrible patch-up jobs on the wall, especially near the light switch. It definitely needs a new lick of paint. The duvet was far too heavy for this time of year, also. However, the bed was comfortable and the room itself is lovely, but just a shame about the listed things above.

The room was spacious and clean! The staff were absolutely fantastic and the food and beer were excellent!

The parking was difficult! I would advise that anyone who books here just bear in mind that parking is sparse! You can park on the street after 6pm or there is a bigger ‘pay and display’ carpark 5 mins away!

The evening meal was good. Staff were friendly. Breakfast was OK.

We were first offered a bedroom with a skylight - no blind. The second room offered was fine but with a bit of noise from the bar & pizza garden next door.

There were breadcrumbs on the surface of the shelves/bar top in the room. Floor did not look like it had been cleaned. Could use a bit of vacuming in the shared corridors as well. Breakfast a bit poor but gets you going (if anyone expects a bit of fibre/poridge, bring your own). Was too hot in ehich case having aome light sheets instead of duvet to cover at night would ve been nice. Too much light from a skylight window starts waking you up at 5.

The breakfast was very poor. No service to tell you what to do. No tea bags out, limited choice, no fresh fruit. Noisy location. Woken up by people outside both nights plus our room was next to night time entrance which banged shut every time.

The staff were lovely - particularly dog friendly and keen to please. The Inn is comfortable and an enjoyable place to stay. They have thought about how best to cater for walkers with and and without dogs and this shows in the layout and rooms available. The food was excellent as was the general mood - could have stayed longer!

Managing stairs with a strong dog was a challenge - would have preferred a room on the ground floor!

Es war äußerst schmutzig. Küche: Der Herd und der Backofen strotzten vor Dreck. Der Fußboden klebte. Das Geschirrhandtuch war sehr schmutzig. Nachdem ich den jungen Mann im Hotel darauf angesprochen hatte, sagte er dass am nächsten Tag nachgereinigt würde, was jedoch nicht geschah. Er tauschte dann das schmutzige Geschirrhandtuch gegen zwei schmutzige Geschirrhandtücher aus. Daraufhin habe ich die Kommunikation nicht weitergeführt. Das Cottage liegt im Hinterhof des Hotels, in dem auch die Mülltonnen stehen. Es stehen ein Tisch und zwei Stühle neben dem Eingang. Das Ensemble ist jedoch wegen des Schmutzes und der Lage neben den Mülltonnen nicht zu benutzen. Hinzukommt, dass Lüftung und Kühlschrankkühlung des Hotels in den Hof pusten und dröhnen. Auch nachts ist es somit sehr laut und man kann nicht mit geöffnetem Fenster schlafen. Die Einrichtung ist sehr heruntergekommen. Das Ledersofa ist komplett verschoben, der runde Tisch wackelt in allen Positionen. Irgendetwas hing mal an den Wänden, inzwischen sind dort nur noch Löcher. Es gab mal scheinbar ein Kindergitter vor der Treppe. Davon sind jetzt nur noch die Haken vorhanden. Die Leuchtmittel sind zu funzelig. Das Zimmer mit dem Einzelbett ging. Außer dass jemand seine Unterhose darunter vergessen hatte, die natürlich nicht weggeräumt worden war. Das Zimmer mit den zwei Einzelbetten war komplett runtergerockt. Beide Matratzen komplett durchgelegen. Bei einem Bett sogar das Gestell darunter, so dass man schief darin lag und jede Bewegung quietschte. Die Betten stehen lediglich einige Zentimeter auseinander. Damit ist das Zimmer voll. Im Bad war die Duschkabine unten verschimmelt. Das WC war nicht geputzt. Warum wir kein anderes Hotel gesucht haben? Wir waren mit dem Zug unterwegs und hätten fußläufig nichts anderes gefunden, was den Anschein einer Besserung gemacht hätte.

Struttura molto bella, le stanze sono nuove e moderne e il bagno ha una doccia molto grande e comoda. Comodo il parcheggio privato dell' hotel di fronte l'ingresso. Buone anche la colazione e la cena.

L'unico inconveniente è stato l'antifurto dell' hotel stesso che ha cominciato a suonare alle 3 di notte e non ha smesso per circa 10 min.

Easy to find and parking

There was no one easily available to check in or check out. Although breakfast was included: yogurt and mushroom was finished well before end time and even eggs. Then the cook had to run to the shop to buy some. So, was an incomplete breakfast for sure.

This trip was an opportunity to meet up with a good friend who I'd known since school days and to hike in the Hathersage area of the Dark Peak. We stayed at the Little John Country Inn and what a great choice we made. The room was very comfortable and the food choice at breakfast was so good that it set us up for each daily hike. Although we ate out each evening to try other options in different places, we personally thanked the chef and some staff members in addition to posting this review. The Little John Hotel would suit all types of guests and is even able to offer holiday cottages. It is worth 10 out of 10 in every respect

We couldn't find anything that should be improved but appreciate that others will find differently. The location of the establishment which is so close to bus and train services should suit everyone. We couldn't even complain about loud music keeping us awake at night although we stayed midweek!

Hathersage is a beautiful village and perfect base for walks into the Peak District.

Central location perfect for all amenities and for walks. Outdoor covered seating area very pleasant.

Room very tired with a grimy feel. Gaps in laminate floor, upholstery needs a deep clean, surfaces need a thorough clean (used contact lenses by bed!). No room servicing, so having to ask daily for more tea, coffee etc supplies. Breakfast made early then left and every day had to ask for multiple breakfast items to be replenished. No eggs one day and part frozen bread. No waiting staff around to supervise or speak to, only chef who was new to the job. Only evening meal we had took an hour and 10 minutes to come when restaurant not busy - unnoticed by staff, although on complaining we received free drinks and one meal refund.

Access to room difficult and signs confusing. Velux window in ceiling had no blind making sleep difficut as light streaming in from 4.30am. No towel rails or hooks in bathroom. Self service breakfast not great.

Same great experience as in previous stays. Smaller room this time but comfort and location remain at the top of the tree. I have seen negative comments about the buffet breakfast but my experience has been several times now that the breakfast is fresh, has great variety of hot and cold, cooks use decent ingredients such as proper butchers sausages and I like that one can eat as much or a little as one feels. No issues here at all.

Car park is (still) tiny and road next to property is (still) busy, but this a) cannot be helped and b) should not detract from a gorgeous village location, a lovely atmosphere and genuinely nice hosts.

Felt a little bit sorry for the guy at breakfast as he looked like he was all on his own and run off his feet but he managed and got through the shift.

Breakfast wasn’t very organised.

A slight annoyance, there was no plug near a mirror in larger bedroom, (1 bedside lamp did not work) and no mirror at all in family room so had to use hair dryer in small hallway. The shower was a lovely size but could do with a shower mat as quite slippery. Nearly fell couple of times. The cottage was quaint quite roomy, lovely large kitchen ideal for families, however, little bit disappointed that fridge had no freezing facilities so had no ice for our gin & tonics! I am sure if we had mentioned some of our little problems they would have been put right. But we were out and about early.

Had one evening meal and it was not good. Gammon,eggs and triple cooked chips. Eggs hard, chips floppy and very badly cut. We couldn’t be bothered to complain at time as it was really hot and only a couple of others in pub. Staff however, very pleasant and accommodating

Lovely modern ensuite, comfortable bed and delicious buffet breakfast.

The room was very comfortable. A fan had been provided. The power of the shower was great. The 3 for £15 small plates were delicious, piping hot and good value for money. Staff were friendly and helpful. Watched an England game in the World Cup - apparently no other place for 15 miles were showing it!

One packet of biscuits had been opened, and half a biscuit eaten! To be fair, the staff replaced without question with two fresh packets. There was some black mould in the shower. Not a fan of cooked breakfast kept on warmers. Everything was a little dry and overcooked.

Perfect location for reservoirs and our onward travels to Chatsworth. Room was large, clean, and shower room was lovely and clean. Bed was really comfy and we slept well Evening meal very good. Breakfast ticked the boxes I was concerned with it being a pub we might be disturbed by bar noise. However it was really quiet. We would happily stay again.

Hot water took ages to come through, as per the little sign in the bathroom warned us - not a huge issue but might be worth looking into. Some wasted water and couldn’t be quick in the shower if you want a hot one! :)

schön grosses zimmer mit tiptop bad. gut gelegen im dorf, gut erreichbar vom bahnhof und gute ausgangslage für eine wanderung zu stanage edge. dazugehöriges pub war sehr ansprechend. beim frühstück glutenfreies brot (und einige warme speisen). zimmer wurde nicht jeden tag geserviced, fanden wir angenehm.

mässig sauber (gläser hatten flecken (vom vorgänger?), überall kleine stellen mit staubresten, treppe zu den zimmern war wirklich krümelig und etwas war ausgeleert, wurde aber in den drei tagen die wir da waren nicht geputzt). betten wirkten durchgelegen, kuhlen klospülung war sehr hakelig, wollte nicht immer. fenster mit blick auf angrenzendes restaurant - entweder etwas beobachtet oder in dunkelheit. check-in war an der bar, nicht ausgeschrieben und wurden nicht wirklich willkommen geheissen bis wir ein zweites mal nachfragten. frühstück war in ordnung, aber eher warmgehaltenes als frisches.

Breakfast was not great. Precooked and left on heat. So much left over and wasted too. Such a shame as the food the night before was excellent. Would be far better and far less wasteful to cook to order. Only thing that let our stay down otherwise would have been 10/10

Dinner. The chips were dark brown, verging on black, although not burnt (old oil?). The lasagna was tiny... about 3 cm by 20 cm. I don't think the garlic bread had ever seen a clove of garlic.

Breakfast. (Good fresh fruits salad, cereal & yoghurt). The cooked food (although only half an hour after the start time) was practically cold, tepid at best. That's the problems with these self-service hotplate type of buffets. Very disappointing.
