Provider-sourced guest reviews.
The staff were friendly and very helpful. The rooms were pleasant and clean. I understand the hotel has changed hands recently and I think it could be improved and still retain the unique atmosphere
The evening meal was bland, the same every day. Apart from Monday it was served only in the bar. The bar was dingy, cold and at times very noisy. We did not enjoy the food in there. We hadn't any transport and being elderly were not able to go elsewhere apart from our last night when a fellow guest gave us a lift to an Italian restaurant which made all the difference to our final day.
Quirky
Nothing
The room was large and comfortable. Evening meal was excellent on the night we arrived, breakfasts were good. The staff were generally very friendly and helpful. The location was excellent and the price reasonable, which just about made up for the defects noted below.
The main door was open all the time, even when no staff were visible. It made the public area cold and unwelcoming and full of leaves, On one evening there was no-one in reception, the bar was closed (and the door handle hanging off), and we could not get into the dining room to find anyone, even though it was supposed to be open. The hotel was generally shabby
Spectacular position in old georgian section of old Buxton town. The building has tremendous character and history. I did like the effort made for the table dressing at breakfast. Handy spa. Prime location for the opera house and pavillion gardens.
Character spoiled by neglect. Incredibly shabby. The entrance hall was dirty, musty smelling with a dirty unkempt carpet and furnishings. very unwelcoming. It established a poor impression straight away. The decoration in the whole hotel was well past its prime, with peeling wallpaper, missing patches, knocked to bits painwork, and damp patches on the ceilings. The rooms were nothing like the photos on Trip advisor, which when we later checked up on were 7 years old. musty old furniture (and I love antique furniture) Nothing was made of the history of the place. The food was appalling, not fresh, not well cooked, poor breakfast selection. No continental option, no sliced meats or cheeses or fresh fruit. Tinned fruit and cheap pastries! First day, bacon and sauage overcooked to being inedible, every day after, not cooked enough, and had a residual cheap packet bacon taste and smell. Poor housekeeping and hospitality! Hard lumpy beds, cheap poly duvets and pillows. The place needs a complete overhall, updating, redecorating, reburbishment, lots of investment to bring it up to even an acceptable level. Considering the spa was advertised as a potential experience for hotel guests, there was no information about it in the hotel, and the concession for hotel guests was negligable in an otherwise very expensive spa!
Great location for the Opera House. Room very nice - large and well fitted. Lovely breakfast. I hope the new owners will give it a facelift now.
The comfy beds The location
The room was dusty. Had to request it to be vacuumed as I reacted to the dust, making me wheezy. You could see the dust under the furniture. It was sorted quickly; however going were covered into the bathroom the mirror and light shade were thick with dust. The breakfast wasn’t nice. Bacon grey colour, mushrooms watery and tasteless, sausages grizzly, hash brown wasn’t pleasant with a slimy texture.
Rooms were comfy and stylish.Excellent breakfast
Rubber shower mat in the bathroom was filthy.
The hotel is oldie worldie . The location was great car parking was easy . Staff was great. Nice breakfast
Bacon was bit over cooked
The staff were friendly. The location is great for the Buxton Opera House and is in central Buxton .Bed was comfy. The hotel is very old so full of character but a bit tired. Food average.
5 steps up to bathroom - was not aware of this. Room dusty.
Location is great. Room and facilities were great.
The hotel is being renovated and looks like it needs a lot of work doing
Great location, clean hotel, historic and good facilities. Breakfast was good.
We booked two rooms and they were far away from each other. I would have liked them at least on the same corridor.
We had a lovely clean, comfortable room and the staff were very welcoming. We enjoyed breakfast and the location was great for the Opera House.
Good breakfast
One member of breakfast staff was a little brusque.
Location
Room was not that clean. Carpet all along the skirting board around the room was thick with dust. Plastic cover hanging off of something by the door. Net curtain in window was not clean. Room 30.
Location for visit to the theatre was excellent. Helpful receptionist.
Room carpet and bathroom floor not clean enough. Looked like it needed a good vacuuming - even some precious occupier’s tablet on the floor. Breakfast could have been more ambitious, like a yoghurt maybe? It was ok if you like the full English but not for me. I acknowledge that their breakfast is ‘complimentary’
Cool and solid old building with historical vibe.
The ancient lift was frequently out of use.
Great location, lovely room and great price.
Overnight public parking was not easy. Had to be back at the car by 8am to renew the ticket. The online payment system was a joke and didn't work.
Location
No staff tables not cleared
Lovely rooms with four poster bed. I was in the room Mary Queen of Scots stayed in! Loads of history in the hotel. Great place in the centre of Buxton!
Reception were very helpful trying to find me somewhere else to stay
Room inaccessible. Had I been able to stay breakfast was in another hotel. Very sad, nor at all as I remember The Old Hall
Location
Location and surroundings
Found hotel to be dated and old. Not what I was expecting.
Breakfast room and location for theatre was excellent.
Room was fine
Breakfast was very average. Buffet style but uninspired and very little choice Staff were fairly invisible. Is the hotel due for a shake-up? It had that feel about it
Clean, spacious, comfortably furnished room. Tasty cooked breakfast, with decent strong coffee.
Breakfast could have been better presented, eg more choice of breads/pastries and fruit. No lunch offering and Theatre Bar closed, despite the Opera Festival being in full swing and nearby lunch establishments being fully booked. Lack of staff on reception desk - there should have been a telephone/bell for when the desk wasn't manned, rather than expecting guests to go hunting for someone.
Nice breakfast. Quiet room.
The bedroom had five steps up to ensuite bathroom which was a challenge as mobility is reduced. Should have been informed. Also the lift got stuck on one floor several times. No late food in bar.
The room was comfortable. Good shower and coffee and tea making facilities.
Lack of parking near the hotel could have been made clearer. The staff in the breakfast room and bar were not very friendly or accommodating. At breakfast there was no good morning just a shouted instruction from half way across the room to sit over there! We asked for tea in the afternoon and one of the cups was very dirty. I asked for it to be replaced which was met with a significant huff, no apology and a clean cup almost dropped on the table. After breakfast on the first morning we decided to go elsewhere the next day. We would not stay there again.
Our room was lovely. We were able to park easily
The breakfast experience was not great Items missing from table Staff seemed to lack enthusiasm and did not smile which was a shame I don’t know if they were understaffed or not morning people.lovely room food good.
Friendly receptionist and some helpful staff. Hotel is in a great location.
Hotel is looking very tired. Antiquated lift and lack of signposting to room made finding room difficult. Bedroom clean but furniture stained. Shower was luke warm. Window was filthy and had been propped open by a glass - otherwise would not stay open. Bedroom was very hot and despite heatwave, no fans provided. No food available in hotel at all except a very basic breakfast - no fresh fruit. Bar frequently not staffed and hotel seemed short of staff in general.
Got moved.
Flithy room, steep stairs.
Fantastic location. Interesting hotel room was big and fairly clean but the bed and pillows were very uncomfortable stained and badly fitting
Bed pillows fining room was quite poor
I know Buxton well and have stayed in other places
The breakfast food was overcooked, there was no Marmite in pots and nothing fish on the menu, no kippers nor haddock
Breakfast was great and comfortable room
Woudl be better if it served dinner. Meals were elsewhere.
Ideal location in the centre of Buxton Good breakfast Comfortable bed
Very poor Wi-Fi with unreliable signal
Our room (5 ) was one of the recently refurbished ones and was xlnt. It's on a corner so has 2 windows, these had been opened a little to allow a cooling breeze on a really hot weekend, nice touch. The location is absolutely top, next to gardens and opera house. Didn't have dinner but it was being served at the sister hotel next door, the very stylish (and expensive) Crescent. The lounge and wine bar were comfortable. The history. They provided a fan.
Breakfast was a bit chaotic sometimes, buffet fryups are never the best, fruit juice running out and there was no fresh fruit.. but the table linen was top notch.. hmmm! No outside space but the public gardens and slopes made up for it.
Closest hotel to the Opera House which we visited twice. Very good breakfast. Bed was very big and comfortable.
Decor was very tired. We had a very big room overlooking the park with a big bay window, but there were signs of damp on the wall by the bed. Carpets around the hotel haven't been changed for years. We didn't mind but others might.
Spacious room and bathroom
Web site of Old Hall out of date with facilities and prices. Meals apart from breakfast at expensive hotel next door which were poor quality and minute portions . . Service very average, Breakfast obviously cooked in advance and on third day staff not on duty when dining room opened.. Lift so unreliable that had to use stairs to access bedroom on top floor.. Stayed previously and were very satisfied with accommodation , lovely dining room and good food
Close to amenities. Bed was comfortable
Tired and run down in places. Room very basic, looked nothing like any of photos on site. No food service, piano bar closed, breakfast good quality but cold.
Its location within Buxton town centre.
The rooms are bit tired. The weather has been hot and the sash window to our room would only open to allow a small airflow. Had to use the room to prop up the window enough to allow more air into the room. Thankfully a portable fan was provided but that made quite a noise. The curtains were stained.
Have stayed here lots of times over the years. It is in a great location for the gardens and Opera House.
The property has moved beyond shabby chic into looking neglected. 2 members of staff to service the busy breakfast experience were insufficient despite their best efforts.
Location Good clean bathroom and shower
Dust on kettle lid Damp on wall Plug sockets difficult to access Grubby decor and paintwork
Perfect location v near to opera house and park. Comfortable bedroom
Disappointing breakfast - no fresh fruit at all just defrosted forest fruits. Tiny croissants and kept warm buffet. No dining available just a discount on the nearby crescent hotel.
The receptionist was so kind and helpful on arrival. The bedroom was charming, with a very comfortable bed and equipped with everything you need: plenty of towels, hairdryer, tea and coffee station. It was a really peaceful night!
Bedrooms and the rest of the facilities were old, the room we stayed wasn’t cleaned mix we found dental floss and other detritus in out bed, when we tried to moved it to plug our charging points.
Location, it was located centrally to the places we wanted to visit.
Breakfast was good. Staff friendly
Decor quite dated plumbing very noisy
The hotel is really convenient for local restaurants, and there's on-street parking right outside the hotel. The female staff member in the restaurant/bar was really helpful, as was the night-duty security guard.
* Not enough staff in the evening. There's a sign in reception saying the "receptionist is momentarily away" - this is not true; there is no receptionist. The lady working in the restaurant/bar has to do reception duties too. If there's a problem she has to call the Duty Manager, who seems to be so busy she doesn't have time to answer her phone. So, pray that you don't have a problem. * Not enough staff in the morning. I tried to check out at 8 a.m. Again, no receptionist, and this time the bar was closed. I was lucky that I caught the night security guard just before he left. He called and asked someone if I could check out, and I was cleared to go. * Sleepy breakfast staff. Breakfast starts at 7 a.m. and I arrived at 7:03 a.m. Perhaps he had a poor night's sleep or we caught him on an off-day. Please visit the Royal Hotel in Ross-on-Wye and observe how Carol greets residents when they arrive for breakfast. * On-street parking is only 2 hours from 8-6 p.m. unless you have a permit. Didn't affect us as we needed to be gone by 8 a.m. anyway.
We were aware that it is a hotel with a three star rating but were not prepared for the level of tired decor and poor facilities. There was a problem with the gas supply so breakfast was served in the cafe of the sister hotel next door. Nothing was avaible to order it was all very average quailty self service. We only tried it once in our 3 night stay. Bed was creaky and the bath had black mould in the grouting. The room was serviced each day and the room was cleaned but it was small and really wasn't worth £109 per night (which we had to pay in full when we booked 3 months ago)
Staff were friendly
Room wasn't clean, mould in bath, room very small and generally grubby, no milk in the room, only 1 glass, very expensive for a very tired place
Location, staff and building
Quirky old English hotel
We have stayed before, but this time we had a suite, room 23. Its in the loft / roof , accessed from floor 2, then 11 steps up, winding staircase. Once your up there its so light & airy & lots of space. 2 double bedded rooms, a lounge area & bathroom with bath & shower with a view of the opera house. The breakfast has some good sausages , bacon & eggs
The lift is old and fine , but the problem is other guests don’t close the concertina door properly & then it can’t be called, the staff were excellent finding the lift & getting it sorted for us. We only used the lift for cases, we used the stairs the rest of the time. Maybe the 11 steps could have a hand rail, but not sure it would confirm.
Good location.
Room not clean, food still on floor, dust in bathroom. Had to go Nextdoor for breakfast, not told in the middle of renovations. Tried to charge me for drinks which I didn’t order.
The hotel looks nice on the outside (albeit under scaffolding) but as soon as you enter, you are transported back to the 1960s and not in a good way. Everything about the place is aged, in need of refurbishment and a very thorough clean. Staff were pleasant but the building itself needs closing and redoing. As a family of 5, we had two rooms; one had clearly had a recent but cursory makeover (not the bathroom and no one had thought to replace the collapsed bit of ceiling). The other very dated room would be a great set for a remake of Fawlty Towers or as an old people's home. Opened the cupboard and the floor was thick with dust. I lost count of the rawl plug holes in the walls where stuff used to be fixed in and had been removed over the years. Breakfast was OK but PLEASE CLEAN THE PLACE. It's not nice sitting next to a windowsill with dead flies and cobwebs. And the toilets downstairs were pretty awful. Did I mention that they could do with a clean? All in all, great location, could be a fantastic hotel but it will not be until it has been refurbished. In the meantime, PLEASE CLEAN THE PLACE.
Arrived - couldn’t find reservation Reported peanuts behind back of bed - never vacuumed up Beautiful bathroom - base of shower dusty Coffee tray - lack of coffee, biscuits packet split Bill at end of stay - someone had had a beer and charged it to our room - whilst discussing this the receptionist was quite condescending and she didn’t apologise at all for the mix up but was making it our problem
Great location in centre of Buxton. Convenient all-day parking right by the hotel entrance at reasonable daily price.
We stayed about 15 years ago and the place is definitely looking ‘tired’.
Air con in the next hotel. We had to go there the first day as our hotel had a problem serving food.
The 2nd day we were in the Spa restaurant. Good air con but uncomfortable seats for eating from. We had told staff that we had leave early but the breakfast wasn't ready when it should have been. Some staff did their best but not everyone.
Rooms have all you need and clean and they provided us with iron board and box that was not available
Breakfast served late
Staff, room, bar
English breakfast was barely edible. Bacon, black pudding rock hard and uncuterble, sausage and hasbrowns cold. Good had been left out far to long and became inedible, complaint made to reception, not much respone
Location ,historic building, staff
No complaints, to maybe upgrade could reduce the nature of an historic building, and make it too expensive to visit
The central location was a big plus, very handy for all areas. We enjoyed the breakfast, especially the sausages very tasty.
Unfortunately, there were a few issues with the interior damage, that were crudely taped up. Also such a shame that the painting didn't have more thought to it, being a heritage building, I don't think white paint is the correct colour. Also a shame that the architecture of the ceiling freezes and moulding, were not painted in a stand out colour.
We were given a family room which was huge, talk about value for money, the location was perfect as we were going to a show at Buxton theatre. The receptionist’s were both friendly and chatty, the other staff in the bar and whilst having breakfast were very young and polite but need to engage more with guests. My only fault is that breakfast offering was a bit dry with it being under the heated lights for so long but all in all a lovely stay and I would recommend the hotel to others and would go back if another show interested me.
The hotel is a bit tired and could do with a lick of paint although I could not fault my room which was clean and comfortable. The breakfast needs to be put out when required and not left to dry out under the hot lights.
Location is excellent, over the road from the Opera House and park. All bedding and towels were spotless and staff friendly
The hotel is very tired now ans would be a huge task to spruce up unfortunately. Bed creaked soooo much that even a cuddle was impossible
Lovely central location, friendly staff, beautiful rooms and convenient parking!!
Nothing to dislike!
I liked the location. The beds were comfortable as well
I feel the hotel was outdated. The doors on the rooms didn't feel very secure as they were a actual key rather than the usual swipe cards.
Location was excellent, very central. Staff were very pleasant. Breakfast was good.
Rooms were tired looking, carpets looked old and worn.
Interesting, rambling old building. Good breakfast. Comfortable bed.
Some staff seemed unengaged, did their job but not interacting.
Location is ideal. Hotel within walking distance of everything we came for .Breakfast was nice .
Room was dirty ,carpet was dirty. needs hoovering . Room needs updating . Bar area needs cleaning also , seats were ripped carpets dirty .
No food available in the hotel. However, excellent food in the Crescent Hotel next door. Perfect location and amazing historic building. Staid in Mary Queen of Scots room.
Staff should have known a bit about the building. It us very significant and should be a selling point.
I’m going to split this into 2 reviews; firstly the way staff treated us, then onto the room itself. This is a long one 😁. So after a wonderful stay in Buxton at another hotel down the road (see my review for Roseleigh hotel) we thought we’d return. Unfortunately couldn’t get that hotel again but found The Old Hall hotel on booking.com and booked it. On arrival we hovered in the reception area (more like a hallway with a low window) for our turn whilst the receptionist was dealing with an older lady. The lady was complaining saying she couldn’t climb such steep stairs, and when she’d booked via booking.com there was no mention of steep stairs, and wanted a room move. The receptionist told her the hotel was full. We were close by and heard the whole conversation. I instantly thought this was a mistake! The receptionist (Victoria) was very flustered, clearly trying to man reception on her own whilst dealing with people checking in, wanting their luggage, phone calls and people complaining, all by herself. (Come on guys get more staff on reception at busy times). Then when I gave her my name and booking details she said there was no booking. I had booked this 3 months ago, had the confirmation email and a reminder from booking.com the previous day about the upcoming trip. There is a booking! But Victoria couldn’t find the booking. We were told to wait in the bar! Just at the side. After lots of back and forth another lady (I think from the crescent hotel) came and said ‘there’s no booking, I think booking.com have scammed you’. I’d never heard anything so ridiculous! She told me I needed to ring booking.com. No help- or we’ll find you the phone number, nothing!! She said we’d have to pay for a room. I googled what to do if a hotel has lost my booking, and I read out the reply. She told me she didn’t have to find me any accommodation as it was a booking through booking.com and was their problem., not the hotels. I felt like she just wanted to get me out the way. She said she’d call in a manager.. in comes Lee (I think from the crescent too) he again looks at my confirmation emails and says there’s no booking, all we can do is buy a room. He says there’s a family suit available, says he usually sells it for X amount but he’ll knock off £50. By this point we felt like we had no option but to pay it, we’d already wasted 2 hours stood in reception arguing whether we had a booking or not. Whilst we paid and filled out a form. The room was being “freshened up” as this was the room with steep stairs that the other lady didn’t want. When we finally found the door to room 12, it looked more like a cupboard door as it had a glass panel you could see straight in. But the key worked and in we went! Well the lady wasn’t wrong about steep stairs! There was a dirty tissue left on them, how the guy “freshening up” the room didn’t see that I don’t know. Any way the so called suite was the most weirdest place I’ve ever stayed. Old and quirky I could’ve appreciated, this was shoddy and weird. There’s 2 bathrooms, no showers btw only baths with a hose that doesn’t stay on the wall, they were very dirty (see pictures) , 1 at each end of the suite. A kitchen which was absolutely disgusting (see pics) a hallway/ random area for a table and 3 chairs, a bedroom with a single bed which we didn’t use, a tv area with a 2 seater sofa, the a double bed and 2 singles, then onto the bathroom with another random room with a vintage vacuum and 4 coat hangers. It was bleak!!! Rough as!! I wish I had gone back to reception and complained, but by this point our evening plans were fast approaching and we really couldn’t be bothered to argue any longer. At 6:30pm (2.5 hours after arrival) Victoria from reception rang my mobile saying she’d found my booking. I asked what room was it for as I didn’t like this one, she said the hotel was full and there wasn’t any other rooms anyway. Absolute shambles!! This along with the state of the room absolutely ruined our weekend away. Also I barely got any sleep as I kept thinking someone would walk up the stairs and although the radiators constantly made a noise they did absolutely nothing, and I was freezing. The only saving grace was I absolutely pigged out on breakfast, I had to try and claw back the money we’d wasted on staying there!
Fab location. Breakfast was ok....comparable to breakfasts in budget chain hotels. Self serve so eggs etc had been sat a while.
The hotel was quite dated.......decor etc. Budget chain hotels offer similar facilities and breakfast at a cheaper price. No parking. Had to park at train station.
Friendly staff and a great central location. Very quiet location at night too. Nice large bath towels and clean bathroom.
I know it is a very old building and I loved the character that comes with it but it is a very tired looking hotel inside.. Bathroom was decent enough but I think our room must have once been connected to the room next door as everytime they walked across the floor in their room our room literally bounced.. it was the weirdest thing as the beds moved 😳. The sounds also just went straight through the walls.
Staff were friendly.
Room was not the one booked and no attempt made to remedy this.
Had a fabulous stay here. Room was clean and beds comfy, had good nights sleep. Staff are excellent and go above and beyond. Breakfast was excellent with good quality food and the chef made me scrambled eggs which was a bonus. A special shout out to Phil the linen porter who saw us reading all the history on the walls. He was a walking encyclopaedia when it came to the hotels history and he even showed us round the room Mary Queen of Scots stayed In. The hotel is right in the centre of everything. Would definitely recommend and Will definitely go back again. Historic hotel in a Great location, fantastic breakfast and excellent customer service from staff the hotel should be proud of. Thank you for an excellent break x
Staff fantastic. Phil the linen porter was so knowledgeable about the hotels history. He went above and beyond giving us a tour of the room that Mary queen of Scot’s stayed in. Breakfast was fantastic and hotel was right in centre of town. Cannot fault it and would definitely go back again
Great location in the heart of Buxton. Full of history, quirky wonky floors. Great staff and a lovely menu, great value.
Nothing not to like. You can’t change a period property.
The room, the beds and the location
Slow service in the restaurant during dinner and breakfast time... It took the staff a long time to replenish breakfast
Great location, delicious breakfast
Needs a bit of uplift, fixings are a tired and worn but still comfortable
Our room had a beautiful four-poster bed, the facilities were good, and everything was very clean throughout our stay.
Nothing
Excellent location and really friendly staff Great breakfast Really comfy bed
Rooms are looking a little tired and could do with a lick of paint
Breakfast, location, bed was comfortable
Far too hot, had to prop window open with box, we complained and was given a fan that just blew the hot air around. We were in room 13 and there was generator type of thing right next to the window that was totally load and none stop so didn't get much sleep, we videod the noise is you would like to hear it
Location in the town centre, managed to park Infront of the building but on busy days it's pot luck as it is a public parking area. The buffet breakfast was really good with quality cooked ingredients.
The room and bathroom were extremely tired, with aged furniture and needing fresh paint and carpets.
Loved our stay. Greeted by a wonderful lady receptionist, so friendly and helpful. Parking sorted and we parked directly outside hotel. Stopped over for one night. Room with four poster bed. Bed and linen very good, really comfortable. The furniture is old but perfectly functional. TV has the major channels nothing else. WiFi was hit and miss, more miss than hit, but got a decent mobile signal so used that. Bathroom was large. Great shower. Towels high class and soft. Breakfast spot on and included in price. Breakfast room was welcoming, clean and food was more than decent. You can walk through the hotel and pick holes. Yes the furniture is tired , some walls need a lick of paint. Floors are creaky and not always level. But for what we paid, with breakfast included I can't fault the place. If you go in with the right expectations this hotel is perfect. Location is outstanding. Close to town centre, quiet at night, there's a small park literally right outside. Would not hesitate to stay here again in future.
Full of character and old charm. The bed was very comfortable and the room was very nice and clean.
The stairs and landings needed a bit of a clean.
Location was great easy to find
Breakfast was poor The staff didn’t re stock bread yogurt sauces butter bakery items , the chef wandered off with the sausage and bacon for 8 minutes and only when. He saw me waiting did he realised that he had left them somewhere There were no plates for hot food and the staff seemed very unaware of service They need more training and a supervisor
So, Booking.com didn’t pass on my booking to the hotel, apparently a common problem of late!!!! Luckily, the hotel had a sister hotel next door which after a panic was able to accommodate me for the mistakes of Booking.com computer system 😢
Not having a reservation thanks to Booking.com
Full of character and Alastair always provides great service
Na
The location of the hotel was great, right in the centre of Buxton and opposite a big park. The outside of the hotel is lovely.
The whole hotel could do with a really huge makeover. Everywhere was shabby, the carpets were paricularly horrid. The dining area was acceptable, although very outdated. We were on the top floor where there is a huge hole in the ceiling going up the stairs. Our bedroom had obviously had a leak from the roof as the wall was stained over the window. The lino on the bathroom floor not fitted properly. The toilet in the en suite was not clean, plus a dirty cleaning cloth had been left on the bath. Biscuit crumbs over the dressing table. Had to ask for reception for handsoap and milk!! Parking was extra, which should be included in the price. Evening meal was ok, even though one main course was forgotten and had to be asked for. It was then brought out 15mins after the other main meals. The staff were very apologetic and we were not charged for the one meal that had been brought out late. The restaurant wasn't busy!! Breakfast wasn't good, overcooked dry bacon and sausages, not very good quality. some of the food cold even though it was under a heat lamp. Cups old and stained. The staff did their best and it could be an amazing hotel if some money was invested in it. The Elemis toileteries are a nice touch, but more attention needs to be paid to the basic things.
Location was excellent. All usual facilities in room and breakfast was good
Room and furniture was a little tired and needed updating
The shower
Absolutely Everything else
ROOM
POOR LIFT
It’s clearly an old building, and I’m afraid it’s gone past being quaint and actually looks tatty. The services - staff, food, and the welcome are warm and first class. Our room - 33 - the bathroom was clean but the bedroom was very dusty and neededed a good clean. While it’s old - there are some tweaks that would brighten and make it feel fresh like better furniture and new curtains.
room 33 needed a good dust and hoover
Central location
Not a lot
Breakfast was great, made better by the very personable young man on duty 20th May. He was excellent in every way, anticipating requirements before shortages, assisting hesitant guests and making the very best use of his time. (I've spent a lifetime training staff in various businesses). Location was perfect for Buxton Opera House.
Bathroom was lovely BUT no decent shelf for the paraphernalia needed for an overnight stay for two people these days. This is common in many hotels.
Nice facilities but needs a facelift or refurb. Great location for opera house, bars and restaurants. Reasonably easy to park right outside. staff are friendly and efficient. Our room was comfortable and quiet. The bathroom was clean, nice towels, a good shower a great breakfast. It could have been cleaner in and around the bedroom area. It’s an old building and needs some TLC to make it lighter brighter and more modern. For folks with challenging mobility - the floors can be uneven
Staff members very friendly
Not clean and dated
Our bedroom room 8 had damaged to the ceiling looked like damp , the bed was comfy
Breakfast was plentiful but stone cold , no bar open upon arrival although was told it was ,
We have stayed at the old hall once before, it's a great location for the opera house and pavilion. The room was fine, but in dire need of a good clean, I dont think the dressing table has seen a duster for a good few weeks! The beds are lovely and comfy and the shower was nice and powerful, just a shame the in house cleaning let's it down. Stayed in room 33 which would not be ideal for anyone who is not very steady on their feet, as you would expect in an old building the floors are not flat.
