The Sands Hotel Hokianga

I liked being on the beach. The room we stayed in was very comfortable. It will be lovely once all renovations of the complex are completed. Good restaurant. Pleasant staff.

The view and location are quiet and relaxing just what we needed after an international flight. Then travelling on further for the remainder of our holiday.

Nothing we didn’t like. Pool section was being upgraded/maintenance going on, so not all the facilities were available, not that we would have used them on this visit,however, the stay was still an enjoyable experience overall. No timer on the TV? if there was couldn’t find it lol

When you spoke to the right person the help was great. Great views from the upgraded room.

King size bed on castors does not work with a laminate floor. Error made with the room given to us initially but then the second also had the rolling bed problem. Different messages were given to us from different staff members for example the cost for breakfast. The beachfront room was great but the large shower and large toilet were not a great design. The main door did not fit properly. It is also time that lighting is improved at the small entrance to the complex.

Not possible to get a better room with a perfect view. The room was beautifully appointed. Very Lux. The staff were welcoming, helpful and very accommodating. We were well looked after for our every need including the restaurant. The menu had good choices and the lamb shank was yummy . The perfect stay I can not recommend The Sands enough. Currently the Sands is upgrading with a new deck which will only enhance the experience especially dinner or drinks while watching the sun set. In addition the bed was comfy and the shower hot and strong!

Can't fault this place at all.

Modern and comfortable room with plenty of space! Highlight was the patio doors out to the balcony space with a stunning view out to the beach and water, and the sound of the waves on the sand to fall asleep to. Nice and comfortable lounge seats to watch the water from. Room included fridge and kettle with cups and cutlery. Very comfortable bed and well appointed room.

Main part of the hotel was under construction whilst I was visiting so couldn't use outdoor pool facilities (was during winter anyways).

The room was an upgrade from the room I had booked. In fact it was a couples room.

They never left any toilet paper and although I could've asked I opted to go to the local four square.

Very helpful friendly staff. Room with fantastic sea view. So as the restaurant and bar. Enjoyed our dinner here. We requested for twin bed but the two single beds were set up as double. Sorted quickly by front office. One tea spoon provided for two of us..We share.

This was the second room at this property that I booked for this trip - sea views were impressive and the room was very comfortable, clean and beautifully updated. the outdoor furniture outside the room on your own sheltered patio was an added bonus as the weather was also beautiful!

As well as being a beautiful location - the hotel has vastly improved since my last visit - facilities have been updated and everything was clean, fresh and beautiful looking. The room was very comfortable and there was plenty of parking. The staff were also very friendly and helpful.

Shower was amazing! Very comfortable bed with good linen. Great view. Restaurant was exceptional for dinner and good for breakfast. Friendly staff.

Need a hook to hang towel in shower. A broom would have been handy. Locals a bit loud in neighbouring street.

Beautiful location right on the water’s edge. Very spacious room with a private outdoor area. A great place to stay on the north west coast. Sunset views.

Toilet and shower in the entrance, not fully private. Cold rooms, needs carpet in both rooms as was cold to walk on the lino.. Needed more cutlery in the room. Had only one tea spoon to eat our noodles. Other than that nice view and access to beach, tidy complex.. Thank you for our stay!

The room was spacious and clean with the view of the ocean. I definitely recommend to anyone to at least to stay one or two nights as I guarantee you would want to return with your friends and family.

I had the lamb shanks for dinner which was cooked well but instead of a mashed potato with it (as the waiter said it will come with), but it was creamy oily potatoes that did not go well with your traditional lamb shanks.

I loved everything about this place, the service was exceptional!!! The food was the most delicious food I've eaten in forever!! The room was clean,and the bed was so snuggly and soft. Awesum shower too!! The staff were sooo kind and helpful and just lovely!!! Im 100% coming back!!

The room is very modern with a top finish and attention to detail. The outlook over the Hokianga bar is fantastic and was topped with the setting of the sun over the Tasman sea.

The entrance door was difficult to open and lock. The sliding door out to the garden was very noisy and difficult to open. After walking into a wonderful room with a great view, it was disappointing to have a sliding door that did not open smoothly.

The layout of some rooms was weird with some bathroom doors not providing great privacy. Response to questions via the booking.com app weren’t very responsive.

Everything was perfect. The staff were some of the best we have delt with. Beds are comfortable, rooms are clean and the view is amazing. The laundry facility came in handy for our family.

Good to have somewhere that did accommodation, food and drink in Opononi. Comfy big beds and amazing bathroom.

Would have loved to use the private spa pool that came with the villa but it was full of beach sand from the last people who stayed so didn’t feel like it was clean enough. Toilet door handle was broken. TV didn’t have streaming platforms which was disappointing only because after a long day of off road adventures a movie would’ve been nice.

TVs needed update in Villas. Breakfast was varied on both days due to a large group on the second night. Suggest large groups be catered separately

Dinner service very disjointed. Drinks took 5 to 10 minutes, even the bar was only 5 meters away? The meals came out super quick - quality was ok, but service so quick does not make the dining experience relaxing. I ordered another drink after the main meal, while looking at the dessert menu - nothing in 10 minutes - so we left without the drink or dessert. There were about 20 people dining ( or less), 3 waiting staff and a bar person. There was a lack of coordination and leadership in the dining room. Need to have service coordinator directing staff to where the needs are, maybe heave the bar person taking drinks orders and doing delivery leaving waiting staff to the food delivery? The service coordinator should also be seating the patrons, ensuring they have what they need, any questions… An ideal setting that will not take a lot to make it perfect! Just a bit of coordination, communication and training.

Its a beautiful spot. Villa 1 was beautiful, comfortable and so nice. It felt like we were in fiji.

The bed sheets with zips were uncomfortable but not a problem.

Not even a toaster, plates, knives and forks nor any way to even make a sandwich.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Position was absolutely beautiful, the room was immaculate and enjoying dinner and a few drinks on the deck was the perfect way to end the day. We will most definitely return.
