Helpful staff, good food
Lovely old country hall hotel with wood panneling - not many of these left so happy to enjoy the unique building. Very freindly and personalble staff both at evening check-in and at breakfast. Breakfast was very hot and tasty (vegetarian grilled) with bonus points for a massive pot of fresh tea! Huge, fluffy bath towels. Nice to stay at a friendly, traditional, independant hotel as opposed to the ususal cookie-cutter Traveltavern alternatives.
A few usual quirks as expected with an old building - hot water to shower was somewhat 'variable', old style TV (although perfectly functionable), questionable fixtures and fittings etc. But overall as expected with the age / style of the building and probabley added to the authentic character of the place.
Great looking property, free parking
Mattress a little bumpy, shower average, small bathroom, basic amenities.
Great location, food at all times is excellent. Staff are well trained. Lovely family room with views
The staff and food were absolutely amazing!
Room could have done with a deep clean, but it wasn't dirty in the beds, but it's an old building, so I guess it's hard to maintain anyway
Good breakfast
Several very dated features
Lovely building and nice breakfast
No room key available on check in even though it was after 6pm. Staff had to seek a wedding guest who had failed to hand it in. Dog in the next room barked all night long so we hardly slept. Light up mirror in bathroom not working. Light from outside lit up the room all night. Shower very unclean and mouldy. Wedding taking place on arrival so uncomfortable check in with loud merry guests blocking the walkways.
Nice and quiet and comfortable staff very friendly
Le bâtiment, l’emplacement, le personnel
La vétusté et la propreté de la salle de bain
Breakfast and dinner excellent. Big menu so lots of choice
Super friendly staff so a pleasure to stay there
Staff were brilliant and the food was great they obviously have a very good chef and team Room was very good apart from the water problem and shower
The shower was poor the water trickled through so not good Cold water tap again was a trickle we reported it on the second day of our stay but by day four when we left it was still poor
Quiet location (note, there were very few guests due to being during the week rather than an event weekend). Room (no. 6) twin/double ensuite with garden views was a very pleasant room to stay in. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. Full English was excellent (bacon was well-cooked) and veggie breakfast was also very good. We had an evening meal and prices were competitive with gastropubs and the quality was excellent. Bar prices were ok but a little on the high side. Would have been nice to see some local bottled beers but also good that there was one bottled ale rather than none. Access to footpaths nearby and 15 minute walk to main road for buses to Hartlepool and Peterlee.
Slightly high bar prices (small discount for those staying might be an idea?)
Good location for the purpose of our trip. Nice breakfast & polite & friendly staff.
Very worn and tired. Shower was terrible, poor flow of water and dirty, bathroom door would not shut either. Bed was far too soft, both had bad backs the next morning. Lots of peeling wallpaper on landing, whole place just needs a lot of money spending on it. Decorated in loads of different styles, all needs some sort of bringing together. Looks lovely from the front of the building, it’s gorgeous, but drive round to park and the place is in a bit of a state and for some reason a used car sales lot in the car park?
It’s such a relaxed atmosphere
Car park ain’t great
Food was very good, portions a bit big for us being older
Bed too soft and very warm, decor was dated, bathroom dark and claustrophbic.
Beautiful setting in a very old Manor. Lovely staff and the breakfast was amazing....especially rhe coffee ☕️ Parking on sight, comfortable rooms with everything you could need. The history of the Manor is still there and that makes the stay even more special. Thank you for a lovely, relaxing stay xx
Staff excellent. Approachable and very helpful. The building was excellent. Well maintained. The grounds immaculate. Excellent.
The shower had a leak and only just warm but usable.
Very friendly staff, nice property, homely environment. Great breakfast
lovely and clean . lots of hardworking friendly . nothing to much if we needed it
nothing
Quiet location. Staff very helpful and friendly. Room comfortable and thankfully a fan provided in the room.
Very disappointed with the evening meal. Only 5 small pieces of chicken in the Korma sauce. Naan bread overcooked and solid. Definitely not worth the heavy price.
Staff are extremely friend always there to help food was amazing stake was tender and the grounds on a night where so peaceful and beautiful
Staff on Sunday morning were pleasant, room was ok, breakfast was ok and setting was great, lovely from outside and good base to visit North East.
Room was a bit tired, smell of mould, but then replaced with awful farming smell, when asked to move rooms, the night staff was very dismissive saying they were full, didn't seem too bothered, not apologetic, being full is fine, but offering no empathy or apology is not acceptable.
Staff, hotel, breakfast and location excellent.
Bed very uncomfortable and shower very little pressure
Had a very good welcome, lot of family members involved , met the owner nice man , breakfast and evening meals very good, evening meal very big , bar good and all staff very obliging, maybe property could do with a little maintenence but big property so no big deal , location great pleasant garden and surroundings
nothing really
It was a very pretty hotel
It was fairly remote and used as a wedding venue. We were not part of the wedding and treated slightly differently
Rustige, groene ligging. Easy en ruime parking. Prima kamers in een typisch Schots gebouw. Deftig ontbijt en vriendelijke lui.
Wat details maar het vermelden niet waard.
The food was excellent. Breakfast was good, but the evening meals were excellent. Tasty, hot well presented, could not fault. Good choice, excellent service.
The rooms were small and a little dated, Various things did not work, but the quality of food made up for the shortcomings in the room.
Breakfast room was clean and tidy and the food and service. were excellent
shower stopped working on the 2nd morning. Its an 'old' building and could do with a bit of painting update despite the warning I managed to bump my head coming down the stairs!
Had a great evening meal in the restaurant. Looks like a lovely wedding venue.
Staff were all very friendly and the room was spacious
Water pressure in the bathroom was awful; and the windows were tiny so room was quite dark
Freundlichkeit des Personals. Garten für die Hunde.
It was delightful staying there
It was lovely
The area. And it was a lovely old place with character The waitress Stephanie was great. Without her the staff were dull
Unfortunately it needs some tlc and also there was a wedding on and 1 o lock in the morning we had children running and people talking out loud With the window open it had a dreadful smell coming thru there
The staff were friendly and accommodating, especially for my wife's dietary requirements
Nothing
The rooms are very big and high ceiling, it was very quiet, with a nice view of well kept gardens from the window.
It’s in need of some tender loving care and some money spending in it. The bed was quite lumpy and springs kept digging into our backs. The water pressure in the shower was not good enough, the tap in the sink had more pressure. The property is clean but needs more than just cleanliness, it needs rejuvenating a bit more and some consideration I think.
A beautiful building with very friendly and helpful staff
Inside the hotel is in need of a face lift. It looks very tired which does somewhat ruin the hotel.
Lovely hotel. Stayed for 1 night. Staff were all very helpful and friendly. They really looked after us with our dog. Superb evening meal, good options if vegetarian or vegan too. Breakfast good. Yes, hotel is a little tired around the edges but our room was comfortable and clean. A beautiful oak staircase and panelling leading upstairs. Some lovely features. Beautiful gardens.
All the staff were excellent. Really good location
Nothing
pet friendly accommodation and friendly staff
smell coming from the toilet somewhere
Female staff were lovely and friendly. Pretty grounds and nice bar area.
Tad isolated.
The grounds were beautiful, the bed was comfortable, the chips were nice
The general disrepair of the property, cobwebs in our room, old tatty mismatched furniture, pipe on show throughout the room, no sealant round the bath, door thresh hanging off, room felt like a nursing home, our room was main fire exit so if the alarm went off everyone would have to escape out of our room, very dated, food was just ok, drinks expensive
Location
Too many stairs and no lift
Excellent staff
Love the location and grounds. The bar is nice and very reasonable and we enjoyed the food at the restaurant
We have stayed here multiple times in the past. The problem we had along with other family members who were also staying too was that the water pressure was dismal, infact at one point the hot water on shower stopped flowing and I couldn’t wash my hair. Also we had the deluxe room and there was no ironing board and I couldn’t find the hair dryer. Eventually found it in the secretary desk which was the last place you would look for a hair dryer. Staff are very nice, if they just address some maintenance issues it would be great. We had just come from a 13 th century hotel in Greece that had amazing facilities and water pressure so it is possible to have modern conveniences in ancient buildings
Exellemt stay staff great Food great good value
Clean basic room and bathroom.
Yes the breakfast was far better than expected. It was served hot with plenty of toast and anything else was no problem.
This stairs are a bit of a struggle but that's because we are a little disabled and as old as the hills.
Evening meal and breakfast, excellent. Plenty of choice and reasonable priced. Drinks reasonable priced aswell. Lovely staff, very pleasant and helpful. Room was lovely, overlooking the garden. Plenty of Draw space.
Bed was uncomfortable. Very hard mattress. A shame, as the room was lovely
Lovely building and grounds
Heating didn’t work, bed uncomfortable, hot tap scalded and cold tap was weak. Overpriced for what we had.
Nice location, easy to find
Some elements slightly dated (tv in room for example)
Friendly staff Good food
Room needed some Tlc
Quite. Ample parking. Good food.
Nothing in particular
The staff were very friendly and welcoming, they were very good with our dogs. The carvery was very good and the creamy parsnip dish was amazing. There was an atmosphere of old world charm, with carpeting throughout giving a cosy homely feel. The hotel dates from the sixteenth century and it must be a huge task to keep it maintained and in working condition. The gardens are beautifully arranged and it looks like an amazing venue for weddings and special occasions.
If you want minimalist sleek hotel rooms with no personality this isn't the place for you. This hotel is full of personality, with creaky floorboards. Interesting artwork, wonky doors and windows - but it all works and is comfortable and clean.
Very nice period property
Higgeldy piggieldy corridors
Lovely venue
Food and staff good
Property very dated, looks like hasn’t been touched since the 80’s
The staff and food and place is brilliant. Very nice place and so welcoming.
In our room the toilet didn't work properly and the water pressure was not good. Also some of the laps didn't work.
Friendly efficient staff
Great location for visiting family in Hartlepool. Excellent food and very comfortable room with excellent facilities.
N/A
The breakfast was good other than that it wasn't a pleasant stay.
The staff were generally unhelpful. The building is old and the rooms and bathrooms are dated. The floors creak throughout the building. I arrived very late and had to wait until a member of staff woke up and came to answer the door. The beds are ok but the pillows and duvet were very light and didn't offer a good night sleep. I think I would choose a larger chain during my next stay.
The staff are lovely and friendly 😊
The bed was uncomfortable and the shower had no water pressure.
Great food and service.
A bit old fashioned for some but we like that
Looks beautiful. Great setting. Friendly staff.
Rooms and stairways needed tlc. King bed was just two singles pushed together. Hot water took ages to appear. Water pressure was very weak resulting in poor shower and extremely long wait to fill bath.
The staff were friendly. The location was ideal. The building in itself looked lovely but the feel is very much a hotel time forgot Breakfast was also nice.
Every step the floor creaked, the floor boards were uneven. The shower made an awful high pitched noise when using it. The hot water was scolding hot which burnt my husband there was no sign to say be careful. Not sure if it was because it hadn't been used for awhile but there was also a strong egg smell when using the bathroom for the first couple of times. And lastly the bed was a divan base, very soft mattress with a wooden bed frame from a completely different bed around the base. When sitting up the head of the wooden frame broke, I had to put it back together the remaining frame was very flimsy, not really sure what the point was. Our room was at the bottom of a set of stairs so very noisy and did not feel like a private room.
PERFECT
Location was nice - I think it would be better in the summer when the gardens are in bloom. Staff are lovely.
The suite I stayed in is not what I would call a suite and the garden view was not pleasant. The breakfast was very limited.
Nice location friendly staff food good plenty of parking
Nothing
A beautiful house with lovely staff
The noise of a generator/boiler, a constant humming. I couldn’t sleep! Also, a towel rail wasn’t fastened to the wall properly and fell off. The shower also came apart, and the tv control didn’t work.
It’s a lovely hotel, breakfast was great and the staff as always are lovely.
Big pot holes up the drive.
Very friendly staff, cosy room and great breakfast. Good value for money.
A little bit dated but still lovely and cosy.
I love the look and feel of this Hotel. The grounds are beautiful and layed out very well. Parking is in abundance. The interior is very in time with the building and finished nicely. The room I stayed in was a very good size and looked nice. I had a breakfast included in my stay and was very nice. You get a cooked breakfast and choice of jams toast and cereal and fruit
In regard to my room I did request 2 single beds, which wasn’t given. I didnt mention this as after a long drive I didn’t want to move to another room. The bathroom looked clean but the plastic panels make the bathroom look very cheap, there was also a lot of damage to the panels in the bathroom which didn’t look great. The bed was a little uncomfortable, it was a water bed feeling mattress. Sitting on the mattress my bum sunk straight to the bottom. Laying on top of the mattress was okay but only when I was comp still and not moving around. Unfortunately i fidget a bit and whenever i fidgeted it meant trying to get comfortable on the mattress again each time
This is my home away from home when travelling to the North East. A fabulous hotel and going back each time its like an episode of cheers with a warm, genuine and friendly welcome back. As usual Steph remembers everything about you and her personality and sense of humour is second to none.
Friendly staff, nice grounds and well kept inside
Na
The property was beautiful and the staff were friendly. The bar was even opened especially for us.
Not much really I guess the pothole on the drive could be fixed
Very very friendly staff. Lovely food and breakfast.
Nothing
The staff on arrival were very friendly as were all the staff.
I was in room 2 and the shower unfortunately was very disappointing. The knob was broken on the shower controller, the power was weak and every now and then the temperature fluctuated.
Great food - amazing evening meal in bar next to open fire
Nothing
I love the property, the approach is lovely. The staff are professional and friendly. The food was excellent.
Comfortable room, excellent service rack of lamb was exceptional
I booked the best room as per the photo in the listing. We got the size of room but totally different decor and not to our taste at all. The room was cold and the heating wasn't sufficient. A bit disappointing I'm afraid.
Overall a beautifully old and historic building located in a fabulous area near to the coast and surrounding golf courses however the only thing that seriously let it down were the bathrooms. the water pressure was so so low and really effected the shower and bath unable to wash properly for the duration really impacted my stay
The hotel had a really calm, relaxing energy. It was quiet and private, which made it perfect for a little escape. The staff were friendly and easygoing, so everything felt very relaxed. The food was delicious, and the room was spacious, comfortable, and beautifully decorated.
That I had to leave!! Honestly could live there.
service
would have liked smaller meal portions
Gorgeous old building and staff are excellent
Upstairs and rooms need updating

Staff are really welcoming
Food is not great,
Breakfasts were great.. service was great. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Room was very comfortable and property in a great location.
If you got back after dinner service and no one was in the bar they closed it early. Would have been nice to have a night cap before we retired for the night..
Lovely cooked breakfast.
Great overnight stay with our dog. Friendly staff. Great meal.
Room was cold as there was no heating but once in bed it was warm.

Areas to consider
Cleanliness
7.8/10Generally described as clean in parts (breakfast room, some rooms) but several comments note tired decor, smells from a toilet area and need for maintenance, so cleanliness is slightly below average due to occasional odour and visible wear.
Service
9.2/10Consistently praised: friendly, helpful and accommodating staff (including specific praise for a waitress and accommodation of dietary needs), warm welcome and good service in dining areas.
Location
8.6/10Multiple reviewers highlight a pleasant, quiet, green setting and good gardens/parking; one note that it is fairly remote and can host weddings, but overall location is a strong positive.
Room Quality
6.8/10Several guests reported small or dated rooms, low water pressure, lumpy beds and some maintenance issues (broken shower, tiny windows); room comfort is a clear area for improvement.
Amenities
8.4/10Good on amenities mentioned: restaurant/bar, parking, pet-friendly facilities and pleasant gardens; wedding-venue activity can impact ambience at times.
Value for Money
8/10Generally considered good value by reviewers (explicit praise for value and adequacy for short stays), though some feel the property needs investment which tempers perceived value slightly.
Food and Beverage
9.2/10Very strong consensus that evening meals and breakfast are excellent—well presented, tasty and with good choices—one of the hotel's standout features.
Overall Experience
7.6/10Overall positive, with warm service, excellent food and a lovely setting balanced against a tired building, occasional smells, noise from weddings and some room shortcomings.
