The cove was good for a swim Breakfast and breakfast staff both v good

The room was just dreadful. Dark and dingey, air conditioning units humming throughout the night, hotel exterior lights reflecting in the room all night, no aspect, small, bathroom surfaces not cleaned daily, noise transference from neighbouring rooms. No lounge area. A couple of sofas in place facing the toilets and away from the view. Hotel loses the sun very early.

Beautifully furnished. Loved the location, friendly staff. Great bar area and loved breakfast on the terrace. So dog friendly. Loved the toiletries.

Evening meal was not great, mussels served with most of them out of the shell and a bucket of empty shells. A special potato and onion soup lacked any flavour. Generally not great quality food. Breakfast was better but the food nothing to get excited about. Shower temperature varied I assume with other guests as they fiddled with their temperatures. No lift.

There is so much to like about the hotel! First the location is fantastic, right on the beach, in easy reach of the town! Great restaurant with good quality menu , including fish and specials of the day! Staff were friendly and attentive and bedroom rooms and linen were great quality.

Difficult to drive to hotel through country lanes.

Beautiful cozy hotel right on the beach. There is a good restaurant and bar at the hotel which is a good thing, because it is quite remote from Salcombe. Ideal for a weekend. Remember to book your parking spot as there is absolutely no parking outside of hotel parking lot.

This location is great for a relaxing get away, very pet friendly and a great place to chill out. The restaurant menu was great and service inside was great.

Outside was an amazing deck but this is not waitress service you have to order at a single hatch which can be stressful for the team involved and not always a great reception because of this.

everything .... location, delightful staff, great food .. special shout out to Johnny the driver who collected us when got stuck in Salcombe .... We stayed here before in a first floor room which was also excellent.

Only issue. No Aircon and stifling temps on the 2nd floor. They did provide 2 fans but the temps on the 2nd floor were very uncomfortable. 2nd floor rooms also appear smaller because of the roof eves. I would choose a first floor room in future. Someone also damaged my car in the car park grazing the front wing without leaving a note. fortunately it's a few local scratches and no dents which I have patched up.

Breakfast was excellent Location - good, but you need to walk to Salcombe which is approx 20 to 30 mins. Not a problem for us, however not ideal if you wanted to visit Salcombe in the evening.

Room 4 privacy issues, needs frosting on the lower half of the windows as we had to keep curtains closed most of time. Thought the waiting staff in restaurant we friendly but a bit chaotic - service wasn’t that good, waited ages for breakfast order to be taken each day.

Good position with views to the estuary. Good parking facilities. Breakfast good, but failure to top up fruit of melon, pineapple etc when bowls were empty. Friendly and efficient service.

Our bedroom, no 18, was too cramped for a 3 night stay. For a double bedroom, only one chair for relaxation was plainly inadequate . Ditto hanging and drawer space and a clear detailed itemised final bill of items spent should have been provided. The items in our final account were indecipherable

Lovely room with good sea view and loved the view from the dining room. On the whole the staff were friendly and helpful except the gentleman in the restaurant who was not particularity helpful when we asked for some sugar.

No sugar available at breakfast. We asked what do people do when they want to have sugar on their cornflakes and the staff member simply said 'they cant'!

The location is perfect. Beautiful views, quiet and peaceful - total relaxation. We loved the little South Sands Ferry into Salcombe, and of course walking the SW Coast Path can't be beaten in this neck of the woods.

Sign to car park was misleading. This resulted in taking a wrong turn, getting my car stuck on tight corner meaning I had to be towed by a local and incurring car damage. Room was cold, although portable heater provided. Bar service was poor due to lack of staff.

Location was great, right on the beach. Car Park had amble parking and an EV charging unit. Staff couldn't be any lovelier. We ate one evening at the restaurant and all of our party enjoyed the foot. Rooms were really nice too. I had a first floor room (no sea views but that's fine) and I had a posh bath in my room too!

Only 1 tinnie thing. We were surprised to see a french brand of toiletries (L'Occitane) in the rooms and thought you might have supported a local producer and then perhaps put a card with their details on it for customers to buy it.

Absolutely incredible hotel. The room was so spacious and comfortable. Great location you can see that beautiful beach and get a drink on the balcony to watch the waves, we were also very lucky and had beach access from our room so it was easy to carry our inflatable kayak down which I greatly appreciate. The food was incredible, breakfast was nice but we also ate at the restaurant and really enjoyed our night there plus service was amazing. Generally the staff here were just all round amazing, in every area whether you are checking in or using the bar, fantastic. I highly recommend staying here, everything was brilliant even something simple like the towels, lots of towels and they were so high quality. They provide you with these nice biscuits too from this small company with your coffee supplies. I will be coming back here to stay again.

My shower fluctuated between hot and cold water. The lobster bisque starter and crab linguine main at the restaurant tasted exactly the same and was disappointing ordering them both to only realise this.

Good hotel with well appointed rooms. Food (Breakfast & Dinner) were excellent, Reasonable parking although its easy to miss the entrance and drive by.

Some distance from Salcombe - 30 min walk along narrow and busy road or 15 minutes by sea tractor/ferry during the day. Drive to & parking in Salcombe can be a chore.

Everything in the hotel was of high quality and staff were friendly and helpful, particularly reception staff. We upgraded to a sea view room as it would have been a shame to have missed the fabulous view from the front of the hotel. We chose this hotel for it's close proximity to Overbeck's NT garden. It was a just a short uphill climb - about 10/15 minutes away.

We used the ferry to get into Salcombe as there was no available shuttle bus or public bus from this hotel. It took about 20 to 30 minutes to climb up and down to the town, only suitable for the physically fit! We had a very good evening meal in the hotel but the service was painfully slow and gluten free knowledge of the waiting staff was a little lacking.

Hotel was in a lovely location, staff were excellent, smiley and helpful and rooms really nice with fabulously comfortable bed. Great views over the bay from the dining room and bar.

The car park is not well enough sign posted. In fact the first words you see at the entrance is NO PARKING and nothing that says hotel car park. If you drive on past as I did it’s near impossible to turn round in such narrow roads. The hotel has a good reputation for food though I was slightly disappointed. Cooked breakfast took ages to arrive and both fried eggs were solid! Battered fish at dinner time was way overcooked and batter was hard.

Beautiful location and the receptionist was very welcoming

The lady greeting for dinner at the restaurant was so rude and unaccommodating. The table was booked early for 17.45. I arrived to an empty restaurant and when I asked to be seated by the window, I was blankly refused. I asked if those tables were booked, the lady said:”first come was served” even though I was first to arrive. We cancelled the booking confused and had a lovely meal in the restaurant next door.

This is our second time at the South Sands and we absolutely love it! The hotel is perfect, food is great and service is very friendly. We love the relaxed atmosphere and love the location as we enjoy big walks and taking the boat into Salcombe town centre. This time we walked up to the Overbecks (national trust property just above the hotel) to enjoy the garden and views and it was breath-taking - recommend that for nature lovers that do not mind a bit of a hike!

The room was lovely but a little cold, specially the bathroom but a heater is provided so we were OK. There was a hidden 'fell' pipe in the room and we could hear when adjacent showers were being used and toilets flushed.. not very glamorous :-) LOL ! No lift, which we knew about and not an issue for us but difficult for anyone with mobility issues or heavy suitcases

Dinner. Had to wait 45minutes between starter and main course. Starter was very good, but main course was disappointing for the money paid. Crab pasta dish was very mushy.

Room overlooked the beach/sea and all meals were taken with this view. Service was excellent and very helpful. Breakfasts excellent and good choices for dinner.

Lounge area beside the bar could be organised to give more seating. Not a problem when weather good as the terrace could be used but if poor weather the lounge area could be limiting.

Idyllic setting, fabulous breakfast on the terrace, we had incredible weather too which enhanced our stay. Great staff, all very welcoming. Will return.

went for a drink early one evening and requested a Double baileys, the bar tending said we don't have enough just nearly a double , then checked and said there was no more , she then said- can I top up with another drink.. I said no and she said I'll charge for nearly a double. Surely just charge me for a single … I felt her attitude wasn't brilliant I'm afraid....

Food wasn’t top quality

The sea views from the restaurant (the room we were given didn’t have a view even though we were one of only two rooms with guests in).

The staff were under enthusiastic, going through the motions. Nobody went ‘the extra mile’ to make us feel welcome. We had to find staff to serve us in the dar, the inappropriate music was much too loud in the public areas and we had to ask for it to be turned down so we could have conversations. We ate in the restaurant and when the chef came out seeking feedback on our meal, he was defensive and dismissive of our views, even though we had only one negative comment. This made us feel even more unwelcome. Breakfast the following morning was reasonable but again, no one made us feel welcome or that we were being looked after. We will not be recommending this hotel for the price, service or ambiance.

Staff very good, helpful and friendly. Position on the beach. Good car park, good breakfast on Saturday ( did not enjoy Sunday breakfast) see below. Dinner was good, though a very small menu.

Our room was very cold also bath room heater did not heat up. The problem was eventually sorted. Breakfast Sunday.... there was a large group of people , I think swimmers, in for breakfast. Though not having a party, were quite noisy which in a room with no curtains carpet or noise calming features was unpleasant to other guests. We could hardly hear each other so ate our food hurriedly.
