It looks nice on the internet
Rude owner who cancelled our booking half an hour before we arrived. As we were driving, I didn’t see the email. When we arrived the owner was very rude and said we couldn’t stay as he’d cancelled our visit. I asked what we should do and he just gave a shrug of the shoulders. We had to find alternative accommodation at very short notice. This was totally unacceptable but it was his attitude which was abysmal.
The room was spacious and very tastefully decorated. Staff is exceptional, very attentive, lots of tips and caring.
Beautifully restored and presented heritage building in the charming small town of Magonui. Jennifer and Justin have made this place a real joy. Just book it - you won’t be disappointed. We had the Ruru Suite - very comfortable indeed.
Absolutely nothing!
Beautifully presented rooms in this elegant historic building. With excellent faculties including access to a well cared-for garden and lots of thoughtful touches like beach towels, fresh ground coffee, a fridge for milk, a stash of board games in the hallway and so on, this is a beautiful place to stay. It's stretching the definition of hotel in that there's no bar, restaurant or (when we stayed) any breakfast facilities, though the rest of the town caters for your needs more than adequately. Hosts were friendly and accommodating, the bay boardwalk is just opposite and there's car parking.
Booking.com led us to believe there were breakfast options and we'd have liked there to be a blind on the skylight.
No breakfast provided
Would have liked more interaction with hosts
The place was immaculately presented, walking distance to pub, restaurants and shops. Excellent hosts.
Absolutely nothing
Jennifer and Justin were so welcoming and helpful, as well as the property being immaculate
Nothing really, though i was a wee bit cold on my first night.
Location was near to everything in Mangonui, 4 mins to beach and 5 min walk to shops. Hosts were very welcoming and helpful, a lovely couple.
Lovely quaint historical place to stay. Rooms are a good size and on a cold night - lovely and warm. Best bed I have slept in - so comfortable. Wonderful outlook and short walk to cafe and restaurants. Bonus having "real" milk in the fridge too.
Lovely property with great views

Spacious rooms. Delightful hosts.
We felt it was a little expensive compared to similar establishments we stayed at on our Northland travels.
A beautiful lovingly restored boutique hotel right on the water. A gorgeous large room full of personal touches with everything you could possibly want or need. 100% recommend.
The history of the building, beautifully renovated, well equipped with attention to detail.
We liked everything.
Great location, welcomed at the door, room spotless and comfortable.
I received an upgrade from a single room to a much larger room which was really well equipped. Lovely bathroom products and plenty of towels.
Welcoming and communicative host. The room and bathroom were impeccably clean. Proximity to the harbour, across the road, and the east facing aspect from where we savoured a glorious Sunday morning sunrise. Location outstanding in terms of proximity to Mangonui Fish Shop, Coopers Beach and other nearby scenic spots, including Cable Bay and Rangiputa.
Perhaps a bathroom heater would be an added benefit.
Nice original hotel. Clean rooms. Was the only person staying so a bit strange. Only down side was the skylight above the bed. woke me up in the morning.

A lovely place to stay if you’re in the area, close to everything, clean room well serviced, friendly hosts.
Excellent location. Good to have easy access to outdoor space. Beautiful building. Comfy bed.
It would have been good to have access to some basic cooking facilities, even just a microwave.
Manganui is a lovely location and the hotel fits it so well with it's location and history. Magical stop.
A fabulous stay, excellent hosts and an amazing suite
Everything was great.
The location was super handy and the building was done really well. After discussions with the establishment it was not doable to stay for the full booking and a refund is being sort for the one night.
The Totara room had no air con and a mildew smell
A beautiful historic hotel kept in perfect condition in the most serene location but still just a few moments stroll to a few cute little stores and cafe/restaurants. It makes you feel transported back in time.
Absolutely beautiful hotel, in a fantastic location, on the waterfront and a moment’s stroll from the shops, restaurants and cafes of lovely Mangonui. We loved our big, comfortable room and all the thoughtful touches. A perfect place to stay.
This is a lovely place, big rooms with excellent facilities in a very quaint old building, highly recommend
Did not have breakfast , only 5min walk to town great location very peaceful!!
All good no issues
Perfectly situated and lovingly restored, this is a special hotel, where everything is arranged to offer comfort, cleanliness and aesthetic harmony. What a treat!
Location and friendliness of staff
No outside space
Perfect location in Mangonui. A short walk to everywhere. Justine gave us a cool box so we could picnic. And guided us as to where to go. All in all it was perfect.
All perfect
Absolutely beautiful place
Excellent hotel and location Very friendly and helpful staff. Very comfortable and clean room in beautiful location
Gorgeous historical building that has been renovated to perfectly keep its charm.
The Hotel was in a great location overlooking the harbour. Easy walk to shops and places to eat. A number of local walks too. Our room was on the ground gloor with a deck area and access to a very relaxing garden. Well appointed facilities in an historic building. Justin and Jennifer were great hosts and made our group feel very welcome.
Nothing.
The location and atmosphere in the rear room
The small touches and attention to detail by the hosts, elevated this experience from good to beyond excellent. Extremely well positioned. A short walk to epicurian delights.
??
The room was spacious comfortable, with a balcony and view to die for. The owners, were knowledgeable and very helpful, lent us beach towels and a cool box for our day on the cape. Thanks for your hospitality.
Charming
Great location, nice hosts
Well located on a quiet stretch of Doubtless Bay. Serene view on the board walk around the water. A classic historic boutique hotel with very comfortable bed. Jennifer and Justin are very friendly, warm and hospitable host.
Nothing negative really. Booked it well aware it is an old property with minimal facilities and a dated building requiring higher cost for maintenance.
Great hosts who were very helpful. Location is perfect, within walking distance of everything.
Nothing - all good
We had a wonderful stay at the Old Oak. The building itself is gorgeous, a well preserved slice of Mangonui history. We were warmly welcomed on arrival by our hosts. The property exceeded our expectations, the room was beautifully decorated, clean and warm, with a super comfy bed. The property is a short stroll along the boardwalk to some great eateries in Mangonui. Such a lovely romantic place to stay. Highly recommended. We will be back!
location was excellent, the room was very clean and the bathroom spotless
Thanks for a superb couple of nights away. Loved the room, couldn't fault it. With thanks Paula
The Old Oak is a lovely old lady, nicely renovated and comfortable. Mangonui is a small town, and we found ourselves at a loose end, having booked a two-night stay. Unfortunately, the first night we were there, an attempt was made to steal our car parked directly in front (the only parking available), leaving it undriveable. Not the fault of Old Oak, of course, but off-street parking or better surveillance might have made a difference. For no fault of Old Oak, we are unlikely to return to Mangonui...

Old charm, great location and friendly hosts
Beautiful old restored place with wonderfully presented rooms. Had everything we needed.
Thanks for your hospitality, lovely to meet you.
Very clean, nicely equipped, great location, very nice and helpful owners
As an older property it’s not very soundproof, but the character more than makes up for this
Clean, comfortable, well appointed and very welcoming.

Very nice hotel with dining options near b.
The history of this hotel is impressive. Gardens are immaculate. The room was luxury in every respect. Our time here was special. The hosts are wonderful. We will come again.
Nothing.
A lovely historic building with fantastic salt water view and several walkable dining choices nearby. A very capable and gracious host couple. Cannot say enough nice things about the hotel and its environs.
Room was lovely, spacious bathroom. Very nice amenities (excellent coffee with fresh milk, lots of tea choices). Bath lotions and shampoos top quality. Jennifer and Justin were friendly, helpful and professional. Great location on the water, short pleasant stroll along the boardwalk to shops and restaurants.
Minor detail but as an old historic property, walls between rooms are thin and voices carry. To be fair, the owners note this on information in the room.
Location was beautiful. Hosts were wonderful
The room was very spacious with a king size bed and was beautifully decorated. A very comfortable stay.
Awesome location, a house with much style and history, friendly and helpful owners, a beautiful garden, close to the seaside
Everything was fine
The Old Oak Hotel is a lovely hotel in an ideal position in Mangonui. We enjoyed the short walk in to the village. Our room was spacious and had been thoughtfully equipped with everything one might need, and very comfortable. The owners were most welcoming and helpful.
Nothing- would have stayed longer if we could!
Wonderful, characterful, very comfortable, hosts very helpful, a great 3 night stay
We had a lovely large room opening out to the Garden. The building is charming and very well positioned to the viallge. Our hosts were delightful and very helpful.
The Old Oak is very expensive. However it was a treat for us as it was my birthday. Given that the venue is unique, quiet and well appointed, we were not disappointed.
Great attention to detail. Comfy beds; fresh smelling linen; amazing views; delightful staff & warm welcome; beautiful heritage building; lovely garden. Great access to restaurants & cafes for breakfast & dinner.
