The location was excellent,
Staff were sometimes difficult to find, and some didn't seem to be familiar with what they were supposed to do., the parking was not ideal. The food was only adequate, and overall the experience was not great value for money, we expected more and have often had a much better experience for the money.
Clean rooms well decorated and facilities were well kept. Nice addition as of tea coffee biscuits water. Staff were friendly and helpful and good to chat to. Breakfast was tasty poached eggs done perfectly and decent choice of cereals and pastries
Some of the staff were pleasant some were not. I had the strong feeling that the hotel was understaffed and those staff were not particularly happy in their work.
Poor reception when we arrived. It was a hike to the room along a narrow and dingy corridor. The bathroom was tiny with very little space to put anything. Food was okay.
An extremely comfortable hotel and the staff were very obliging and helpful. The room was spacious with a very comfortable bed and was cleaned to a very high standard daily. The large beer garden was an added bonus which we enjoyed on sunny afternoons. Breakfast was fantastic and there were plenty of staff so orders were quickly taken and cooked food served promptly.
We only had one negative experience when we ate at the hotel on Wednesday evening they seemed short staffed and we had to wait quite a while to order our food.
Adequate for our needs.
Shower cubicle had black mould,no shaver, reception supplied an adapter,on request.Dirty contact areas on interior doors, carpets soiled
Comfortable rooms, helpful staff and great position.
Allowing dogs into the dining areas during the evening meal times.
Everything was comfortable and perfect for our stay
N/a
The atmosphere overall but especially the bedroom. Evening meal was delightful.
A little clearer sign posting about the route from bedroom to reception.
Had a very comfortable stay at The Black Swan. Would thoroughly recommend to anyone looking for a cozy Inn with lovely food. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Sadly I didn't get to sample the breakfast as I had to leave super early, but they made sure someone was ready to check me out at 6am which was very much appreciated. It was also lovely to see how many guests had dogs. Obviously a good stay if you have your 4 legged friends with you.
More guest parking would have been great however the staff made sure to tell me that parking in the square was free for a certain time, so I only had to pay for a couple of hours.
Food was good Room was a good size and comfortable bed Location was excellent Liked the historic and character architecture
Paarking was a problem each day as only 10 spaces available Insufficient staff as hotel very busy particularly at mealtimes leading to poor customer experiece Reception service was poor and not permanently staffed leading to poor customer experience
Comfortable bed. Good breakfast. Ideal location for exploring the Yorkshire Moors
The property was lovely comfortable and clean and very welcoming lovely rooms too.
We ourselves do like dogs but the only thing for us were dogs being allowed in the room where you collected your continental breakfast from people were queuing up for cereals yogurts coffee etc while trying to hold their dogs on leads one dog even put its paws on the table and was sniffing the food until the owner pulled it down. Dogs should be left in the other room where you are seated to eat Breakfast that’s what other dog friendly hotels we have stayed at do.
Ok but we only have porridge
The carpets were sad, well worn & not cleaned regularly It is not a hotel if U R disabled only facilities downstairs toilet.
Excellent location in a beautiful town. A blanket was provided as I had requested.
Very slow service at meal times, especially around taking our orders. Very limited parking and it needs to be made clear at booking when the main square is unavailable due to the market. To get to our bedroom meant negotiating a lot of stairs, which I do not find easy.
The location and rooms are beautiful, nice polite staff and the breakfast was a good offering
I think the times for breakfast and check out are a bit unrealistic, 10am cut off for breakfast on a Sunday and 10.30am check out is a bit of a joke.
Nice hotel and great location
My elderley mother in law struggled with the stairs
The location was just perfect, overlooking the historic market square. Our room overlooked the square and was newly decorated. Ongoing refurbishment.
The facade which is what you see first is tired and worn. Bathroom shower fittings are cheap and flimsy for a room of this cost. Insufficient parking for a 60 room hotel Breakfast waitress need to smile as miserable everyday.
Loved the decor, suited the old building, lovely garden, superb breakfast and Sunday Roast ! Nothing
All good !
Room was ready so we able to check in a bit earlier and room was bigger than we expected. The bed was made up as a double, but was more like a large king. The bedding was good quality as were the towels. Good quality biscuits came with the tea and coffee.
Being bit picky, but maybe a bottle of water in the room. Restaurant area a little dark in places.
Staff. They were friendly and professional.
The car park is woefully small and tight. We decided not to risk damage and parked on the street. There isn’t enough parking for guests.
Molto gentili
Ho provato a contattare la struttura telefonicamente, purtroppo molto difficile parlarci
Breakfast
We have been coming to the black swan for almost 18 years.. Sadly, ever since the takeover by the Inn Group the personal 5* experience has sadly declined in all areas. This used to be a top place to stay, 5* easily and no issues with paying a bit of a premium for the stay.. Again, sadly, the place rates at best as 3* but they still charge a 5* price 😔. One positive is the breakfast was 'ok', yet that doesn't negate the poor faceless service, the dirty cobweb covered rooms and actually, the front building sign sadly epitomises exactly what the Swan has become.. A 3* chain hotel over charging and under delivering. The fact that there are no responses on TA tells you all you need to know!
Very nice good quality food
Someone came into our room with key mix up at reception but it was sorted
Prima locatie, gezellige pub, lekker eten, aardig personeel.
Niets
Lovely attention to detail. Lovely staff.excellent.
Characterful property in the heart of a beautiful market town. Staff were friendly, polite and welcoming on arrival and throughout our stay. Food was delicious with breakfast an especially impressive spread.
All the staff were brilliant and food was very nice
The room was quite big. The hotel situated in a very convenient position and very characterful. We were allowed to take our dog into a set area of the restaurant which was very good.
Breakfast choice a little disappointing- lack of fresh fruit. Coffee wasn’t the best - would have liked hot milk with it- would have liked coffee pot served at the table. The evening meal service was very slow and sharing platter not good value for money. The main courses were fine. The manager did comment that they were short of staff.
Lovely & traditional Comfortable rooms Very good food
Rooms a little small
Able to take the dogs into Bar area for breakfast.
Bed uncomfortable
Parking is a problems
Excellent location, efficient friendly staff, great food well presented
Lovely friendly welcome. The idea of the app to gain "perks" is brilliant.
No zero alcohol beer on draught.
The staff were especially friendly and helpful. The food was excellent and good value for money.
The room was small and the tea/coffee facilities were minimal.
We loved the room facing the square.
Problem with wine choices, differing messages as to wine availablity both evenings of dining.
Very good
Lovely old building with lots of character, great location on the main town square, rooms very comfortable, food in the restaurant at dinner was great.
Parking was limited, we arrived at 4pm and had to park a few minutes walk away in a side street.
The pub was a lovely traditional type pub and the room itself was nice
The corridors/carpets/adjoining routes from pub to rooms was old, dated and didn’t really match the rest of the pub. Bit tired
Breakfast and location were excellent. Staff were friendly and helpful. So much to see and do within walking distance and even more nearby in the wider area. Good bathroom products.
Parking wasn’t great and neither was the bathroom - shower screen wasn’t big enough so impossible to shower without getting water all over the floor.
Great location, decor in room lovely
Bathroom dirty, badly made bed and when we remade it the duvet was stained and dirty. Slept on top of the bed with blankets we had in our car
Great location, the family room did have a little wear for the price we paid it was unexpected but the food and location made up for it
we really enjoyed staying at the Black Swan. Staff were friendly and efficient. Room was clean and comfortable. Of course the location is perfect. Helmsley a lovely country town. Great restaurants and lovely walks.

well placed property - really nice room.
Well located, parking available, nice garden, staff were friendly, food in restaurant was decent
Very expensive but think this is due to the location but for the price the room is very small and had to close our windows and curtains despite the hot weather due to staff smoking outside the room
Staff very helpful, food was excellent and the bedroom was clean and comfortable. Bathroom could do with being updated as it was impossible to shower without the water going all over the bathroom floor.
Shower/bathroom
Lovely location overlooking the town square. Room comfortable. Quirky property. Some staff very helpful and cheerful others were miserable. On the whole enjoyed our stay and would come back.
Nothing that would put me off returning.
Everything was great
Nothing
Excellent place to stay
Ice room, friendly staff, decetfood
Long wait for evening meal
Idyllisch gelegen im Ortszentrum, aber dennoch ruhig
The location is exceptional, the staff were helpful and it was clean
It was a long walk to our room which made it more difficult to take the dogs out in the morning. Maybe have the dog friendly rooms nearer a door?
Breakfast
We had a knocking sound in our room from a faulty pipe, we reported it to reception, but we were not updated as to what is was or offered any other rooms
The staff were very helpful and good humoured
Mattress was too soft for me..but such things are personal preference
Location very good , breakfast good
Staff were very welcoming, Room was large and clean. Breakfast was good
Location, dinner
Very firm pillows and staff said no option to change as the hotel was full. Receptionist didn’t want any feedback as we left the hotel. No fresh fruit at breakfast.
Excellent location comfortable room
Poor parking availability. Some of the the stack were offhand almost to the point of being rude.
Location, decor, delicious food and lovely staff
Authentic character
the history of the place
the room was at the back of hotel up 2 flights of stairs after we had contacted hotel and advised one of our party had mobility problems
Excellent stay. Clean & comfortable. Superior breakfast
very good location good
to dark in dining room
Location
General cleanliness, hotel looking tired; needs refurbishment
Friendly staff and excellent location
We booked a "cosy room" and were pleasantly surprised when the room was larger than we had anticipated as was the bed which was at least king size. The hotel was also larger than we thought extending back some considerable way back from the square in Helmsley. There was good parking at the rear of the hotel. Staff were pleasant and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our overnight stay
The only concern was the breakfast arrangements. The buffet was fine, if a little crowded. the main difficulty was the cooked breakfast - our order got lost in the system and we waited sometime before raising the issue and then had to re-order. The fact that the meal is served in different rooms seemed to be confusing for the staff.
Breakfast adequate. Dining rooms a bit dated and food average
Better quality food
The location was perfect
All good
Nice character. Room good size.
Car parking limited with no real alternative. Small bathroom. Restaurant service slow.
Didn’t like the squeaky bunk bed with a poor mattress. Bed wasn’t made up well and towels were dotted all around. There was a broken mirror left by someone else and we can’t understand why the pillow slips were inside out! Car parking wasn’t available so we had to pay for street car parking
Loved it! Lovely pub and great location
Nothing to say
Lovely rooms and friendly staff
Booked a table for evening meal we were greeted and shown to our table a good start but after sitting for 15 minutes and no one came to our table to take our order we left and went somewhere else
Location
Our room was very small. I fell over the toilet after brushing my teeth. In a silly place and the room was so hot and we couldn’t open the old window. The service for breakfast was so slow and the the tables needed clearing / they looked like not enough staff. Fabulous location and reception staff were lovely. Lovely old place - but breakfast tables weren’t set and we waited a while.
It was central and staff friendly
Bathroom floor had hairs left. Breakfast kept running out of juice coffee, lots of tables all needed clearing.
Location excellent. Nice room and shower .Staff very willing and receptive . Lovely garden. Easy parking.
Room difficult to find with odd directions to room numbers. Staff were run off their feet the first day(Monday) and struggled to cope at meal times but improved when numbers dropped.
Room at the back of the hotel, window could not be opened, looking out on parking space. A rabbithole as they call it themselves, too big, too noisy
Sfeervol geheel.
Gesjouw met bagage over diverse trapjes
Position.
Too many stairs. Not enough parking. Dogs in restaurant.
Quirky old building in a good location in the town. Staff were efficient and friendly. We ate at the restaurant both nights.
If you don’t have a dog, you can request an evening meal in a dog-free dining area.
It was one of the best and most historic hotels I have stayed in for many years, highly recommended
everything was fantastic.
A really lovely, traditional hotel and pub. Standards are extremely high, in terms of cleanliness and service. A really attractive building; breakfast was excellent, too.
All was good.
Such a lovely place and the garden was good for relaxing and enjoying a drink. Bedroom clean and very tidy, bathroom had plenty of room.
Probably the car parking area, but it certainly would not put us off booking there again.
Travelled solo after my husbands death a year ago. I was looked after so well. And didn't feel I was being judged at all for being by myself. Fabulous, food, lovely bar and the beer garden is beautiful
Car parking was a little chaotic, but I had been advised it was first come first served.
very comfortable room in a very quiet part of the hotel. Staff were good and accomodating to our needs
Very difficult to find our room on the first night. Arrived exhausted and no help with suitcases up steep stairs no dining room was a bit strange for restaurant. Felt like eating a pub meal all the time Food was delicious though and staff very kind
Beautiful decor, friendly staff and the food was amazing.
If I had to pick a fault it would be although the place is immaculate the first hand rail to go upstairs is thick of hand grease which was a little off putting. I’m sure it’s just an oversight and it just needs a good scrub.
Fabulous location. Great good menu and very helpful friendly staff. We use this place regularly
Can’t think of anything
Food ok Service in different rooms on different levels confusing. Expect tea or coffee served at table then order taken.
Better welcome . Clearer instructions about facilities both in hotel public rooms and in bedroom.
The character of the building.
Nothing we didn’t like.
We love coming here. The staff are so awesome. It’s a 500 year-old pub. Great food. Lovely big garden. Nice big rooms. Thanks for another great stay
Stayed before so we had high expectations
The place was tired
Breakfast, history
Dessert was very expensive
The room was bright and attractive. Lovely breakfast.
