Roomy. balcony.
The fire alarm was probably unavoidable. The FIRE exits are not obvious. Exit signs should mean FIRE exit. There should be more boards in the passageways and hotel instruction manual. I looked before the fire alarm and couldn't find.
Breakfast was excellent
All was excellent
Everything. Facilities, location, staff, food, decor, outlook… all really special.
We only had time to stay for one night this time, but appreciated the upgrade
Luckily we had enough time to wait for the breakfast
Staff decor
We loved everything. We went to a wedding. It was absolutely exquisite. The best venue ever.
There was nothing we didn't like. 5 stars for everything.
The location is standout on the waterfront near the ferry and plenty of walks in the vicinity. Beautiful building with a great history. Comfortable rooms. Staff were lovely.
Room. Excellent. Location of room . Overlooking the water . Great. No breakfast
Nothing we didn’t like. Weather when we left could have been better but nothing you can do about that
We did not have breakfast there. Otherwise great
The hotel is beautifully clean and the staff friendly and helpful. The person who served us in the restaurant was just lovely. Our dinner was superb!
There was one service person in the restaurant who spent most of his time chatting loudly to guests at another table. We found this a little invasive.
This is a fabulous hotel in a great location
Great location. Beautiful old but restored hotel with modern facilities beside lovely old features. Staff were friendly and helpful. Lovely sunset view from our upstairs deck.
Our room was upgraded which was a lovely surprise. Great position and outlook. Cosy winter get away
Had been advised to book a time for dinner so we did with front desk but when we presented there was no record in the restaurant. Was quickly sorted by the staff though.
Great staff and location
Location
Nothing
Really nice room and hotel. Owners have done really well renovating it. Bed was comfortable. That's the main thing. Staff were excellent too.
Nothing major.
Wonderful historic hotel. We stayed 2 nights, not in the main building but in the apartment next door, known as The Bungalow. Picturesque view directly onto the beach and across the bay, with the ferry from Paihia arriving regularly at the wharf. A few steps to great cafes and restaurants. We also dined in the hotel restaurant, which was the highlight of our stay - superb menu, brilliant decor and outstanding staff. The apartment was large, comfortable and well stocked with coffee pods, a Nescafé machine and a great selection of teas.
The best feature was the large spa bath (although we were disconcerted to see there was a tell-tale ring left by the previous occupant). Also, the room wasn’t serviced, which seemed unusual in a high-end pricey hotel. Since there was no heated towel rail we were left with wet towels on the second night. I would also suggest turning on the heating in advance of guests arriving, as it was the coldest day of the year and the room took a long time to warm up. All the same it was a great holiday and we will definitely return.
Good breakfast 😋 👌
dinner and the rooms were fantastic
it was all good
Lovely old hotel in middle of town right on water
The restaurant
Small bathroom
The location was excellent, in the heart of town and close to the ferry, where we took a cruise to the hole in the rock.
Maybe could have stayed another night; however, the cost per night was a deterent.
Great place to visit
Friendly and easy place to have a meal
Historical feel with all the facilities. Outside tables and chairs.
Parking instructions and not having to return to car to place parking permit.
One of my favourite places to stay - we like to go once a year
The ambience
Russell is a great little town and the hotel is right in the middle. We were very pleased with our accommodations. Would definitely stay there again.
A period style and historic building on the waterfront that was decorated with historical prints of places, people, and events. A warm atmosphere with welcoming spaces.
Nothing, I really enjoyed my stay.
Love this place - Russell is our spot for a staycation and the duke is the first choice Food and restaurant - 5 star - brilliant! Location - vista and outlook whilst you eat - nothing beats it!
It needs some money spent to keep it in the top hotels in NZ
Location. The history of the place and it's surroundings.

Loved our room so much. Water views, newly renovated and furnished, shower king bed, beautifully finished bathroom with big bath, Nespresso in room.
That we had to carry our own bags from offsite park all the way to room. That milk for tea and coffee was handed to us at reception to carry up ourselves and not replenished next day with room service
Staff were great.
Says beach view but not ,Cookies provided was not eatable and chair cushioning was bad, should have provided milk. They did mention entertainment by board games and all but could not notice anything.
Haunted room and hallway
No room service
Great location, lots of character
Nothing
Beautiful location
We did choose a cheaper room and it was small
Location & staff.
Small room
Lovely atmosphere, great food in the restaurant
The shower is tiny and water goes all over the floor. Plunger coffee in the room would have been a nice touch. And wine glasses.
Best location for a relaxing holiday. Such a great spot!
Beautiful location, amazing views, room was spacious and comfortable, staff were exceptional.
Loved the position, close to everything.
No problems
It was very clean and tidy, and central
Staff were super helpful and always available.

Location of room over looking bay was perfect, Staff incredibly friendly, atmosphere beautiful. Russell is a pretty town. Tour booking was easy and fun

It's the nicest, coolest, comfortable, unique and warmest hotel you will ever stay in. The decor, the history, the crew, the vibe...I love this place
The execution of the d8nner menu was outstanding, I absolutely loved the fish of the day dish and the deep fried eggplant was banging. However, things get a bit limited if you're not a seafood fan.
Lovely room, great staff.
Nothing all was lovely
Excellent location
Quiet n private yet close to shops
The whole experience was exceptional, from the staff, to the food, to the cocktails! Not to mention the best sunset views from the restaurant.
Tomorrow.
Room to small. King bed one chair. No table. Shower nightmare. No wine glasses.
Beautiful setting & loved staying in a grand old hotel with plenty of character & style.
location, atmosphere
Lounge area and the food
Carpark location with luggage
Location , food, front of house staff were amazing especially Bianca from Transylvania
Beautiful views and atmosphere right in the heart of Russell on the waterfront.
Location was ideal for us to not have to worry about getting the ferry home.
The noise around the property.
Evening dinner menu
Food was excellent. My room was far too small, which I did not realise when booking.
Couldn't have a coffee or tea as you did not have Trim milk, had to go to the local cafe for a hot drink.
Near the beach
No tv programs no Netflix no YouTube
We loved this room it was very spacious and comfortable.
Nothing to do with the accomodation however we dined in at restaurant and found the food and service very underwhelming. We had to seek out staff to order the next course and doubled up so we wouldn’t have to do it again ie: entree and main. We skipped breakfast and went somewhere else.
Beautiful historic building in an picturesque part of New Zealand.
We had noisy neighbours, the building is well kept but built in a time and age when noise insulation was not a thing. Not a deal breaker as it's just one night, we still enjoyed The Duke very much.
Everything great food and exceptional service
Everything! We wanted to take the bed home it was fabulous the room gorgeous the food and service next level!
That we couldn't stay longer!
We loved the proximity to the water although we had no view. The room was very clean and comfortable, and it was quiet, even though we were facing the road. The double glazing was a blessing.
It felt a little disjointed with parking and gym across the street, although very close.
Staff were amazing and the facilities are so beautiful. Great stay
Nothing. It was awesome
