Provider-sourced guest reviews.
Chris was exceptional--without asking he jumped to accommodate our needs and give us personal attention from assistance with holding our luggage, personally driving us to the beach club when the taxi did not show up and arranging or an effotless departure back to the ferry. We did not even realize until later he was the General Manager. Excellent!!!
The rooms were perfect size, chic design, quiet and clean.
Nothing better. Loved it
The hotel was in a central spot which made it for easy walking to locations and eateries. The conciere was extremely helpful and friendly.; Chris specifically was awesome! The lounge area was spacious and inviting and they are very flexible if you wanted to check in early. The room itself was small but beautiful, very much a boutique hotel status. The bed was SOOO comfy! That was a pleasant surprise!
The toilet flushing situation was a bit weird. There was no handle, it was on top on the wall and if you didn't push it hard enough, it wouldn't flush all the way. Bummed there was no coffee but we did get a coffee voucher. Unfortunately we did not get it until the end of our trip. Apparently we were supposed to get it in the beginning.
Location
The room and bathroom were both spacious and clean and I really appreciated the many thoughtful gestures the hotel made to help us feel especially comfortable. The hotel is in a great location, close to the beach but far enough away that it’s quiet. It’s well maintained and just a delight to stay in. The patio is also really great for breakfast and a peaceful space to just sit and relax. Highly recommend staying here, loved every minute of it!

location was excellent, clean room, friendly staff

the receptionist made the first greatest impression on the hotel she was so knowledgeable warm welcome the entire staff was so cordial and professional
everything
The location of Hotel Atwater is wonderful, walking distance to everything in Avalon but a bit inland from the busy harbor front. The decor of the entire hotel from lobby to guest room reflect the high quality and classy renovations. It's hard to believe this place first welcomed guests in 1920. The bed was extremely comfortable and we slept like babies. It was quiet. I also really appreciated the complimentary luggage delivery service from the port to the hotel and in reverse, after check out. It really freed us up from having to drag our bags through the daytime throngs of people. We were able to head straight to The Descanso Beach Club from the port when we arrived and then, on departure day, do the Wrigley Island Tour inland and just show up at the port to take the Catalina Express back to Long Beach. I would definitely recommend the Hotel Atwater and also, would love to stay again in the future.
The Wifi in our guest room either did not work or did not work well (when it did work). Also, the water pressure of the shower was very low. I am guessing it's because Catalina doesn't really have a water source? Anyhow, both can be improved upon.
No baggage transportation to hotel as advertised. Discretionary check-ins before 4:00pm, but don’t count on a minute sooner. Keys given to a room that was still occupied. Filthy carpet in public areas. No coffee maker in room. No views. Front desk inept. $950 for (2) nights. Overpriced & overrated.
Although the room was quite small, it was highly efficient and offered ample storage. The air conditioning worked great, the environment was quiet, and the beach towel rental service was a wonderful convenience. It's also located right by the elevator.
Beautiful Hotel! Comfortable, well appointed hotel steps from the mail street in Avalon. The employees were friendly and helpful, from the moment you enter!
Very modern, great atmosphere

Location was awesome, room was very clean and the staff was very friendly and helpful.
Room was extremely small
The property was beautiful and well appointed. They kept the ambiance of the building without too much modernization.
We were surprised and disappointed that we had to pay for coffee at the Atwater Bistro. A hotel at this price point either offers complimentary self service coffee in the lobby or a pod coffee maker in the room.
Delightful hotel -- beautifully updated with charming decor. Room was a tad small but very comfortable and well appointed. Friendly staff at check in and nice cafe in lobby level.
No complaints about anything -- would recommend and would definitely return.
We had a great stay. The hotel has such a cute vibe. We especially appreciated that they held our luggage for the day before we were able to check in. We would stay here again.
Beautiful property. Clean and comfortable and in the center of everything. The staff were wonderful.
Beautiful hotel close to everything. Very friendly staff. Great bell hop service.
Room was very small
My daughter & I were born and raised in Atwater! While I was visiting Catalina Island in 2012 The Atwater Hotel was being renovated I was invited to come back and stay. So here I am! I had a wonderful experience!
Had a great stay at the Atwater. Rims were a little small but nice. Night crew Mathew and Samir were very helpful.
Excellent location: central but not directly on Front St. Absolutely beautiful lobby and helpful staff. Nicely appointed room with a comfortable bed. Very nice that we could use the fitness facilities next door.
The lobby was very cold, and the room was very small.
Good location great staff
Could use new carpet
Very elegant hotel, the staff is exceptional.
The rooms are very small
Luxurious
Beautiful lobby, great coffee shop with wonderful options right in the lobby, fantastic staff, easy walkable location, room was clean, towels for the beach were easy to grab, there was always a smiling face ready to help!
The carpets were a bit dirty and the room was so small.
Great location! And property is clean & quiet!
Limited common areas for hanging out with friends! No rooftop bar, no pool or jacuzzi.
❤️❤️❤️ What a time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what a time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what a birthday celebration time I had with me, myself and God!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Beautiful hotel
I liked everything
Rooms are small but good if you don’t plan on staying in. No microwave to heat up food. But very clean. Customer service ok in the night shift.
This place was amazing. I love the modern but classy look & feel it has. Chris (front desk) was super helpful & gave excellent customer service. He even gave a free desert to my husband for his bday. The room was quaint & cute. The location was perfect, near the entertainment, beach & local markets. Would definitely stay again. 👌🏽
Our stay at this hotel was exceptional, and what stood out most was the incredible staff. From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed with such genuine warmth. It immediately set the tone for the entire experience. They had us laughing, made us feel completely at ease, and hit the perfect and rare balance of being both highly professional and authentically kind. Every interaction felt thoughtful and intentional. Dylan at the front desk went above and beyond, helping us plan our time on the island with such enthusiasm and attention to detail and it genuinely elevated our trip. Oliver took exceptional care of us throughout our stay, always anticipating what we might need before we even asked and making everything feel seamless. Jeremy, was such a sweet young man and even offered to assist us and transport our luggage to the ferry port. Joel who assisted us directly, was equally outstanding. He was incredibly patient, gracious, and accommodating when we asked for multiple items to be delivered to our room accidentally on separate occasions rather than all at once. There was also a wonderful woman at the front desk who took the time to share stories about the hotel’s history with such passion that it added a meaningful, personal layer to our visit. Beyond the service, the hotel itself was spotless and carried a unique charm that made it feel inviting. Overall, the experience felt top tier, and that is largely a testament to the excellence of the team. This is the kind of place you remember and return to.
Great location, friendly staff
The Atwater was one of the original hotels built by the Wrigley Family. The staff was very helpful - The hotel clean and has charm. We had an Accessible Room, I am not sure if it was because of needing to leave room for a wheel chair but the room would have been a lot better had there been a cabinet, dresser or at least a 2nd chair. I do not know: if we were to have gotten a room with a queen bed (a smaller bed) would there have been room for furniture ? As to location, central to town about a block back from the waterfront - we were on the top floor so saw some of the harbor but looking across some rather unattractive roof of another building. There was a mini fridge and ice bucket - surprised no in room coffee service.
The hotel is nice and situated steps away from the bay. It supposedly reopened a year ago after years of renovation. The customer service is standard, not the best but not the worst. The rooms were smaller than it looked in the pictures but my main complaint is cleanliness. Some of our sheets had stains or dirt on them. The decorative pillows had black stains on it. It’s obvious they aren’t cleaned in between guests. We set those aside and off the beds. The hotel doesn’t have a restaurant onsite either. During the day it’s fine since we can dine elsewhere but at night, it gets harder to find snacks once the eateries close.
The common areas on the main floor (reception, seating) were absolutely gorgeous and inviting--so nice that I wanted to spend time there and not just in our private room. The service was exceptional. I appreciated that they move your bags from and to the ferry dock to the hotel (you drop them off in a baggage area just after disembarking) and that they'll take your cell phone and notify you if early check-in is possible (it was). A great stay that exceeded my expectations. NEARBY: Good restaurants (pasta, seafood, Mexican) are directly across the street--no need to walk far, which was helpful because we'd just finished a major all-day hike on the Trans-Catalina Trail and we were tired! We also loved visiting the nearby Descanso Beach Club. I expected it to be overpriced and nothing special; instead the drinks were great and reasonably priced and the service was friendly and efficient. They even have large public restrooms nearby for easy changing. Don't miss the Casino, which isn't a casino at all; it's worth the $ to see the old-fashioned theatre, ballroom, and murals.
Minor: no way to make coffee in the room, no microwave for heating food, but I really am not complaining--this was all part of the old-fashioned ambience. (There is a nice bistro cafe downstairs and they had great coffee and bagels. For an hour before the cafe opens, they also serve coffee by the reception desk.) Also minor: wifi slow and not easy to watch movies/TV, but in a way this was a benefit. We read more, and there are games in the reception era. If I could have changed just one thing, it would be to have in-room coffee.
I liked the location, the room, and the comfiness.
Not ALL the staff is professional regarding in assisting you especially with luggage servicing. The staff when we checked in were on point with their tone and flow. However on the last day, Tuesday morning of checking out we did not leave our luggage for them to service to our ferry because long story short their ethic was not to be trusted after that interaction. Please hire more people with professionalism in a workspace.
The amenities were great, it was amazing to get some champagne as a welcome and above all it is so beautiful. Definitely would do it again.
We had a lovely birthday celebration at the Hotel Atwater over Spring Break. Our family stayed in the Phillip Knight Suite. It was large and had views of the ocean. The Hotel delivered champagne and chocolates upon our arrival. The staff was very friendly and housekeeping did a great job servicing our room daily. They had a cute cafe you clan purchase coffee and breakfast and the hotel is in the heart of downtown. We will be back!
We absolutely adored our stay here. Staff is incredibly friendly & helpful, you can book tours & experiences right from a kiosk in the lobby & you walk out the doors to absolutely everything the island has to offer. The location is perfect, off the Main Street so it’s quiet but right off the action. We enjoyed walking around the island from the hotel. Room was small but well situated & lovely. We enjoyed it so much & will absolutely be back!!
The property was very close to all store and restaurant
The only thing that was uncomfortable was the walls where thin I cook hear my neighbors walking in the halls and slams the doors in there room
Very charming hotel. Well maintained and appears to be a historic building. Beautiful entrance and rooms.
This historic hotel is in a wonderful location and our room had everything that we needed or wanted (except it does not have a coffee maker in the room). It is designed to fit everything in a compact space. The safe is in a drawer, and as you walk in the room there is a cabinet designed to hang a few items on and that cabinet has a some drawers. It is located right across from the sink near the bathroom door. The large mirror over the sink serves as a divider to separate this area from the sleeping area. The bed was comfortable, but it was difficult to figure out how to work the thermostat so that the room temperature was comfortable, but by the second night, we had it adjusted correctly. Sparkling wine was provided in the refrigerator, a nice way to welcome guests to the island. Clean, comfortable, and ideally located with access to the ferry and well within walking distance to the restaurants, shops, and tourist attractions.
Beautiful clean and spacious room with lots of natural light, a huge bathroom, and comfy beds. The hotel is a really great blend of historic and newly renovated. Everything in Avalon is a short walk away.
A pool and hot tub would be a welcome addition.
The Atwater staff were great and the accommodations were excellent. The room was immaculate and the location was in the middle of everything. We loved everything about our anniversary weekend getaway.
Overall, it is quite nice and comfortable But, we'll be staying elsewhere on our next visit. We went just before the marathon, which my wife ran. Our boat back to LA was that afternoon. Many people every year must be in a similar situation. Of course, she wanted to take a shower and change clothes after the marahon. But no, the 11:00 check out time is sacred.. No exceptions. She has run 97 marathons all over the world, and many hotels bend over backward to cater to marathon guests. Not the Atwater. Like in many hotels, in the shower are three squirt bottles. But all look identical. Without glasses, I couldn't even see that there was text for shampoo vs. body wash. With glasses on, it took effort. Tiny font with no contrast. Someone chose these. Someone installed them. Someone refills them. Housekeepers clean. Did no one notice that the three look identical? Are there no feedback loops in the management system? Of course this is super minor, but I wonder what else they are overlooking.
Excellent location, just a minute walk from the waterfront. It was easy to access everything, and the hotel was in a very convenient spot for exploring Catalina Island. The hotel is also nicer than the pictures show, which was a pleasant surprise.
the staff super friendly clean and so close to everything for sure I will be staying there in the future
I originally was supposed to come to relax, reset and restart without the kiddos but things changed.
My husband and I had a suite at Hotel Atwater-room 334, I believe, and it was extremely nice. With the extra room, it was a perfect choice-the room was well appointed with great design with the primary bathroom luxurious and powder room nicely decorated. The bedroom was great, albeit small, and the pullout couch worked when there was snoring. Only recommendation I have is that the rug and couch could use a clean but not bad. The hotel is centrally located and got a large cappuccino at the little bistro in the hotel itself and walked to some good breakfast places as well as to dinner and all of the tours that we took. Highly recommend if you want to be in the thick of things but not right on the main drag.
Rooms are small.
No coffee after 7 AM
The rooms were reminiscent of the old days but with a modern feel.
We stayed for three nights, the room was small but equipped with everything needed, such as a safe, mini fridge, vanity area, etc. The bed was comfortable. The hotel was clean and well located. The hotel is walking distance to shops, restaurants and sightseeing. All staff we encountered were courteous and friendly. We would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the island.
We very much enjoyed our one-night stay at Hotel Atwater. The front desk agents were friendly and well trained. They were delightful. We had no other contact with staff, but the hotel is very pretty and clean! And, a super location.
The Atwater Hotel was a great place to stay in Avalon! Friendly, professional, informative, courteous, staff. Great location. Comfortable bed! Great ambiance in lobby! We will return!
One of the best spots to stay on the island. Absolute perfection. Not only is the customer service amazing, the room and overall ambience is second to none. Everything is in walking distance. We will be back soon. Thank you
This Hotel has a very wecoming lobby ,spacious comfortable . The rooms are very well appointed ,nice layout, beds comfortable. The location is wonderful. Nice that there is a coffee/breakfast place in morning is handy. I was happy they had a table and chairs at edge of lobby in case you have some food to eat or just need a table.
The Hotel Atwater is centrally located in Avalon making it the perfect stay for exploring the island. Combine that with a professional and and excellent staff plus very clean rooms with comfortable beds, and you have Catalina perfection. Every encounter with the staff was excellent. We really enjoyed our comfortable and simple room. The coffee bar downstairs knew our order by day two and everything was pleasant with a touch of casual elegance. I will absolutely stay here again (after many trips to Catalina staying elsewhere, we found our favorite).
The look
Beds to small
Staff were excellent! Very clean hotel! Perfect location, right in the middle of the town and just steps from the water.
A jacuzzi would have been nice
We arrived with our confirmation etc. somewhere between your company and them they lost the reservation. Luckily across the street at the Glenmore, they had a very nice room for the 2 nights.
having our reservation
Spent a terrific 4 nites/5 days in Avalon on Catalina Island. We loved the Atwater: great central location, beautiful well-maintained property, clean well-appointed room and, most of all, pleasant, helpful, available front desk staff. We had a harbor view room from which we viewed colorful sunrises and sunsets. And we enjoyed the ambience of the lobby.
Very clean and fresh. Cheery. The staff were welcoming and very helpful. The location was perfect close to shops and dining and ferry terminal.
The room did not have a view. Room looked out over a rooftop. It was also situated right next to the elevator so we could hear people’s conversations and the elevator tone every time the door opened.
The perfect Avalon hotel. As we enjoyed a free night stay on Catalina and explored Avalon, we would pass by other hotels and smile, so happy and almost smug at how much better OUR hotel was. We stayed in the Phillip Knight suite and a double queen room and enjoyed everything the hotel had to offer from candy in the lobby to the chess set and games, to using the beach chairs and towels and sipping the complimentary prosecco. This hotel is legit good. Oh and Avalon and Catalina are perfection.
Traveled by ferry to Catalina Dec 31, 2025-Jan 2, 2026 and we could not have picked a better spot. We are frequent travelers but never to Avalon. After checking the positive reviews we selected Hotel Atwater and after seeing many of the options I could not have been happier. Location is perfect. It is a modern hotel with great history and design. I was late scheduling during a busy New Years weekend, but managed a king room. They may have been larger than ours which of given a choice I might have opted for, but it was perfect for what it needed to be. Clean, comfortable, modern and classy all at the same time. Staff was great, even the luggage guy at the pier. He let me on to the Circuit app, highly recommend for getting around. As a daily coffee drinker having a unit in the room would have been nice, but then I may have missed out on the wonderful bistro which is steps away from the main desk. Over the course of our trip and traveled the island and specifically looked at some of the other options. For an older, well traveled couple who valued service, cleanliness and location, I will only want to book Hotel Avalon for future trips.
We enjoyed staying there. It wants me to keep writing. Clean. Convenient. Friendly staff. Phew I got to 100.
The staff was very accommodating, especially Jenny at the front desk! The Atwater King room wqs well apportioned and clean.. we had a very enjoyable time there. We loved how many people were using the lobby to play games with their families and friends.
The room temperature was a little warm
There was so much to love about Hotel Atwater. Front desk staff were very helpful , friendly, and professional. Location was perfect, decor was beautiful. The rooms were a bit on the small side, expected in an older building, but were beautifully designed. Hot showers with good water pressure are always a plus after a long day of traveling, and the hotel did not disappoint there either. Bed and pillows were equally comfortable. If I could give a 4.5 rating I would, but considering the rate was nearly $400 a night, in the off season, for a standard room, there were some bumps. I booked a Classic King room, and I think our first room assignment may have actually been an upgrade to an Avalon King (Room 328). It was lovely, except we could only pick up a wifi signal if we were outside of our room and at least 10 feet down the hall. We made do for the first night, and mentioned it at the desk the next morning. They said they would put in a ticket with IT, but by the afternoon we were still without wifi, so I asked about a room change. Again, the desk staff were super nice and accommodating, but noted the new room would "not have a view". Considering my current view was a light pole and a building across the street, having wifi for the next 2 days was a bigger priority. We switched to room 219, which was notably smaller, had a view of an interior wall, but it strong wifi. Then I noticed the headboard had multiple large dings and pockmarks chunked out of it. Again I thought, for this price I would expect more. So I took pictures of the beat up headboard and went back to the desk. Fortunately we were able to move to the room next door (221), still smaller, still an interior wall view, but comfortable, without beat up furniture, and with working wifi. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Atwater based on the service at the desk, the beautiful design, and comfort. The room situation was just enough of a disappointment and inconvenience for us that I can't give it a 5 star rating for this stay.
The front desk staff was very friendly
The room was much smaller than we expected and there was not a view . Just a roof top and looking into windows where it looked like laundry was being done all night (very bright light and no window coverings to hide the machines)
We splurged on an upgrade to the P Knight Suite and I'm so glad we did. It made our visit special. The room was amazing. Comfortable bed, beautiful and huge bathroom. Great view of the ocean and hillside. We were celebrating a birthday and had a great time. Oliver at the front desk was so kind and the staff overall couldn't have been any nicer. We'll be back sand I hope we get another chance to stay in the same room.
The location, beauty and history of the hotel is a big A+. In addition, I liked how there was an amazing gym to use, lots of fun board games in the lobby vault, and guests get access to the beach club. However for 450.00 a night, my room was a postage stamp- the pillows were lumpy, the ceiling walls were very thin (I can hear the alarm of the guests above me, water flushing, and some other sounds!) the queen bed was slanted...too many people have slept on the right side of the bed and I felt like I was going to slide off. Also my window view was the unsightly roof top. All in all, the amenities were the highlight and hotel is centrally located.
Great location, good view, great customer service. Was a great experience being close to the ocean, and the weather was great
L’accueil, l’emplacement, le service bagages au quai ( un vrai plus)
Rien , si on doit faire une remarque les chambres sont un peu petites
Hotel Atwater has been newly renovated, and everything looks great. The location is central and convenient to restaurants, shopping, hiking, the Casino, and Descanso Beach. The staff are friendly and professional, and the Bistro downstairs provides good coffee and quick breakfast options.
The rooms are small and don't have much closet space. There's a refrigerator but no coffee machine. A small Keurig coffee maker would have been nice.
Lovely ambience and very clean.
The hotel is located in central Avalon and very close to lots of restaurants and shops. It’s very clean and have very comfortable bed. However, the suite I stayed at is next to the street and quite noisy. Also, you can hear people walking in the room above your floor so very annoying! The bathroom had sewage smell.
A beautiful art deco inspired jewel. Our favorite hotel now in Avalon. Close to everything but not noisy. Very comfortable beds and pillows.
