The building is beautiful and location is great for the town (also pretty good for the station - there’s nothing much closer).
The room was incredibly hot, even in cooler weather in September. Breakfast had excellent produce, but was just enormous and expensive (presumably due to the quantity) - I ended up leaving lots of it, which felt awful, but it was just way too big (hanging off the edges of the plate).
Breakfast was phenomenal.
Room was isolated. No lift (but lifts hadn't been invented when the building was erected).
Location in centre of town. Bed was clean and comfortable.
This was an expensive one night stay and did not offer value for money. I had to pay an extra £5 to park overnight. The room was very small and dark. We couldn't pass each other around the bed. The shower room was very clean, but the floor tiles were modern with a highly polished finish, and quite honestly lethal, either in socks or wet feet and especially on the towelling bathmat! Unfortunately as we were leaving to check out my husband reached the last step of the main staircase, could not distinguish the edge of the step from the dark brown floor, missed the step and fell heavily to the reception floor. Staff rushed to talk to him, and were concerned, but I had to help him up. Bruised but ok, accident book was the priority. That last step needs to have a contrasting colour edging strip.
The Hotel is excellent with many original architectural details remaining and the room was clean and warm. The staff are very welcoming and polite. The breakfast was excellent and the location is easy to get to.
My only criticisms are the fact that the hotel has a huge night club right next to it, which detracts from the period charm of the property and the noise goes on to 1 or 2 at night and that the bathroom needs updating.
Location, style of hotel, comfortable, clean and the staff were amazing
Nothing
Amazing building and right in thr center of town
The room could do with some TLC
It was lovely
10 at night not being able to sit in courtyard
Historic building. Location. Car park
Room was too small. Breakfast was very limited selection and too expensive. Avocado and tomato on toast was inedible.
We didn’t eat at the hotel so can only comment on the room. A large room on the ground floor of the outside building. This was handy for us as we were breaking a trip and had a lot of luggage.Bed was comfortable and had good reading lights on both sides, which often isn’t the case. The bathroom was a wet room, and certainly was after a shower as the too short curtain could not been extended around the entire shower.
Table and chairs outside our bathroom window.
Great location, superb history of the building. Staff pleasant and helpful. Great price.
Breakfast expensive.
Lovely staff, great room for the price point, convenient location and free parking attached.
Was perfect for what we were looking for
We didn't eat at the hotel. The bed wasn't that comfortable but the bathroom was great. Hadn’t expected to pay for parking in Hotel's own carpark. Great building great location lovely staff.
The location is excellent. Easy parking. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
Can’t think of anything other than it was very warm in the room but that’s not surprising with the weather we’ve been having.
Location and atmosphere
Nothing
Amazing property stayed there three times now, staff are amazing at handling any issue that we came across on the last stay

Breakfast was incredible, both in terms of quality and quantity. The breakfast room was very historic and a lovely place to enjoy whilst eating. It was expensive though at £19.95 per head and parking was £5 per night, which I felt should be free as a guest.
Check in process was slow and clumsy and twice I was called by the hotel for minor reasons which I didn't feel was necessary. The room was dated, windows would not stay open (old sash windows) and being on the top floor it was quite warm when I stayed in August. No fan or air con provided.
Highly recommended hotel
Good room
Reception staff
Nothing
Being discriminated, for Being disabled had to pay £20 for a ground floor room £5 to park the car, the room was filthy I think the dust had been there since Richard the third stayed there, don't normally complain but this place deserves it
It’s friendly, central and very clean
The rooms were very warm
Very interesting place to stay with a nice room and helpful staff
Pity about the awful piped music at breakfast
Close to town centre. Within walking distance to shops and restaurants.
Room was small and stuffy. Paint peeling off of walls and shower looked little rusty.
Lovely, old-fashioned hotel but with all modern facilities and generally well kept. Bang in the middle of town with plenty of shopping and restaurants within a short walk. Parking adjacent to the hotel is offered ( although you need to pay for it ). Exceptional food, cosy bar and friendly staff. Generally large rooms, quiet and comfortable,
Building wonderful character. Staff very helpful.
No air con in bedrooms.
Comfortable hotel and the outside courtyard is delightful for enjoying drinks and relaxing. Didn't eat at hotel as meals are expensive.
Unexpected charge for parking. Eventually found the details on their Booking.com page but it is tucked away (effectively in the small print).
Lovely old hotel. Decorated sympathetically to a good standard.
Unfortunately, because the property is listed air conditioning cannot be installed. The room was SO hot despite having a fan. Even the cold water was warm which was not good for brushing teeth and consequently couldn't make the shower cool.
Old hotel nicely furnished and updated - rooms comfortable though not big. Staff very pleasant. Good quality breakfast
Bathroom a little tight for space
Amazed by the history of this hotel! Loved the courtyard area for drinks. Very helpful reception and breakfast room staff. Excellent car parking availability. Great value for money.
No lift or AC but to be expected in a building over 800 years old! Breakfast coffee and tea was not great. Huge cooked breakfast - would be better to have smaller portions and less food waste.
Location is superb, friendly staff
A lovely room and comfortable bed. Great shower. Really interesting decor , pictures and courtyard. Nice bar
Nothing to complain about. No lift up a couple of floors but staff would have helped if we’d needed it. Front desk guy was really helpful and friendly and seemed to enjoy his job.
Staff were very friendly and helpful. Kept flowers for us in water for the duration of our stay
Very helpful and friendly staff no complaints apart from the pull out bed that was awful they need to address them
Sofa beds and having to go next door for breakfast although the breakfast was great
Had been a very hot day upon arrival was told that a fan was in the room if needed The room was like a sauna no effort had been made to open any windows and the fan was absolutely useless , my wife went to advise them and supplied another fan which she had to carry up 3 flight’s of stairs and that was a waste of time , opened the windows and had to have door open into the corridor and made very little effect, and wasn’t great for security. Ended up going downstairs and sleeping in the outside area. We also couldn’t use the toilet in the room and was advised to try fixing it ourselves , so we had no toilet , So ended up paying for a room and slept outside and had to use toilet in reception area . Shame as location and hotel did seem very nice otherwise
Great staff Great facilities Great location Amazing value for money Perfect overnight stop to break a long journey when travelling from the North to the South
Nothing
Quirky, quaint, good food, good staff
A bit hard to find the parking
Nice room, clean, comfortable and good location.
Room was very hot and without aircon. Lady on reception when we checked wasn’t very nice. Made us feel inferior because we booked through booking.com
Amazing old building. Full of character.
Set price of just under £20 for breakfast, whether you have everything, or just tea and toast. Would have preferred if there could have been pricing that catered to those that just want a light breakfast
Comfortable bed clean room
I had to make the booking at very short notice and they were exceptionally accommodating. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the room was extraordinarily good value for money. The facilities were of good quality and the bed was very comfortable. Would definitely book again if needed and would highly recommend as a hotel option to others.
The decor and room amenities.
Incredibly noisy hotel. I booked the 'family room' and stated there would be two adults and one baby under one at point of booking. I was not informed in advance that the hotel regularly holds events in the courtyard. I was not informed that the 'family room' is on the ground floor, with windows directly looking out to the courtyard, opposite the DJ decks. As the building is listed there is no soundproofing in place. The music was incredibly loud in the room and went on until 10pm, conversation from nearby tables could also be heard during track transitions. Upon raising this issue with the hotel I was informed that I would not be compensated for the disruption as I should've been expecting the noise as the events are advertised. There is no mention of a bar on booking.com, let alone a list of events. They were implying I should've searched for the hotel on other platforms, which is not usual or acceptable. Even if I had, there is no detail on the position of the 'family room' and how this might affect your stay. Therefore I am posting this review to help others make an informed decision on whether this is the right hotel for your needs. If you're hoping for a quiet early night for whatever reason, look elsewhere.
Very attractive with lots of character and excellent location for the towns bars and restaurants
Nothing
Great location and very good room for the price.
Room was a little dated but covered all we needed. Not aware food wasn't available on Sunday night when we arrived but on check in was informed and given some good local options to choose from. Didn't try breakfast as it was a costly extra option.
I don't eat breakfast.
Modern refit just old fashioned dark wood wardrobe etc.
Don’t accept room 110 too close to the night club on a sat. .very loud music to midnight. Spoilt our stay.
Lekkere ruime kamer. Parkeren vlakbij het hotel op eigen parkeerplaats voor £5
Jammer dat het restaurant gesloten was op zondag
Great location for the town - close to High Street and historical quarter. Attractive old building. Great, secure car park. Room generally attractive with antique-style furnishing. Price of room was very reasonable for type of building.
Surprised by charge of £5 per night for parking- not clear on Booking.com site, despite first receptionist insisting that it was visible on all correspondence. I finally found this info in "policy" section! Bathroom floor was flooded by shower - no screen and shower curtain was too short. Breakfast at almost £20 pp seemed excessive - nothing exceptional on the menu - so we didn't book this. Bar and meals were also extremely expensive for this area (perhaps to supplement the cheap cost if rooms?)
Our room was beautiful, very well decorated, the sheets soft and the bed very comfortable. The room was also very clean and the bar and restaurant very beautiful
the green light in the reception ruins the entrance. As its' the first thing you see when you enter it gives a poor impression, which is a shame for such a gem of a hotel. A normal warm light would improve the atmosphere 100%. The poor receptionist looked like Shrek under that light. :( Also the music in the outside terrace was a bit loud especially for guests facing that area and wanting to rest. We had to close our windows. Music is ok but not so loud.
A beautiful main building with fantastic polite, attentive and professional staff..
Other guests banging about upstairs early both mornings. Not the fault of the hotel.
Well presented, very inviting, very interesting building
I think the price, given that breakfast was an expensive extra, was too high
An attractive old building in the centre of the town.
The toilet in the first room did not work so we had to move to another room
The location in the centre of Grantham and the spacious car park at the rear of the hotel that was barrier controlled. The receptionists on both days were also very helpful.
The room whilst a good size was in a disappointing decorative condition. The curtains were difficult to open and close and the shower with being a wet room ( only a standard room was requested) resulted in the bathroom floor flooding with no scraper to allow us to direct the water back down the drain. Also the room was quite dark as the net curtains needed to remain closed as the window opened into the public courtyard. In addition there was no air conditioning in any of the public rooms or the bedrooms which we were not aware of at the time of booking.
I thought the staff were great, espeeically the receptionist
The breakfast menu is very limited. I would have enjoyed a smaller breakfast, instead, we were obliged to pay a fixed price, and both of us left half of it. When we arrived our bedroom was stifling hot. The curtains were open and the sun was streaming in and no fan in sight. . We had to request a second fan as one wasn't sufficient on the top floor. We both think you need to invest in portable air con units Nothing in the room was unclean, but our sink was cracked, the whole room needed a refresh.
How historic it was , so clean , à lovely huge room , high quality linen , lovely bath
It was perfect
A great hotel. Nice rooms. Lovely courtyard. Great location.
No bath mat to stand on, after showering.
Stayed there for 1 night and its a great value. Room was surprisingly big and bed was very comfortable. Parking was great addition on top.
Central
Early morning noise of staff starting the day
Location & character
It’s summer, listed building, so no air con
We stayed in the delux double very spacios. Clean and good amenities
Becos its.a listed building. No aircon. Most uncomfortable.
Clean and comfortable. Staff are very nice.
Very very noisy. A DJ in the alley played loud music until well after 10 pm right outside our window on the Friday night. we asked to be moved and the staff kindly moved us up another floor, but we were still on the alleyway. We couldn’t hear ourselves think or even hear the TV let alone sleep . we were supposed to say on the Saturday night as well, but we left and had to book into another hotel as there was a singer and music on the following night in the same place .we asked for a refund for the 2nd night but the hotel refused. if you want a nights sleep and an early nights sleep please do not stay here.
Lovely looking property from outside, superior room fairly spacious with big bathroom although a little dated.
Due to the age of the building there was no air conditioning and room was uncomfortably hot. Arrived late due to work, around 9.20, was unable to get any food at the hotel and no room service was available either. Due to location, there were limited places to go to find food other than kebab and pizza shops.
Location, courtyard, staff
Very expensive for drinks etc £18 for pint of beer and glass of wine. no aircon and room was absolutely roasting hot all night long even with the fan provided
Great hotel, friendly staff cannot fault
So friendly
Nice location
Booked Junior Suite as wanted to be close to my Aunty. I was assured the pull out bed would be very comfortable for an adult and I explained that I get a bad back on a poor mattress. It was dreadful and only suitable for a child not an adult as there is a bar mid back and thin mattress. I had to buy another room as no compensation was offered by the hotel who I felt were responsible as it was not explained how uncomfortable the pull out is!
Four poster bed was novel Good location Bit annoyed to need to pay for parking given what we pay for the room itself.
Right outside the room was an industrial extractor for i'm guessing a kitchen. Very noisy. The bathroom extractor didn't work properly so super steamy shower room with lots of toilet smells unless you open window into the courtyard.
Great location for the town and nearby parking. Staff were helpful and polite.
Was a little tricky to find
The breakfast was excellent. Lots of choice , beautiful room.
I liked it all.
lovely old building with excellent staff
There was a noisy bar next door which was full of people celebrating the england football win on our first night. But noise stopped at 11pm. And I was not aware of it on the second night,
Breakfast cooked exactly how I like it.
Lack of a lift but this is a very old and fascinating building.
Location and everything else
Nothing
Loved everything about the hotel
Rooms very very hot. Drinks very expensive.
Everything
Nothing
Large airy rooms. Very clean.
Noisy music both nights outside
Centre of Grantham. Quaint buildings in the area. Near statue of Maggie
When we arrived we found out that they weren't serving dinner. It was a Sunday evening and almost everything was closed. The superior double room was very large but dated and up endless staircases. I counted on the way out 51 steps and 3 fire doors. Very difficult even with a small bag
Bed was comfortable
Arrived after 9 pm (I had told them) the room was top floor 5 flights of stairs the room was stifling and windows closed Had been told there was a fan in the wardrobe which I put on Opened the windows and could see the ledge outside covered in pigeon poo and the desperate need of frames repointing Carpets were stained Towels smelt of dry water lucky I had my own DJ blasting in the courtyard below even tho only a few people there With that noise (loud enough to drown out TV) and the heat not good for sleeping breakfast was over £20 which is just ridiculous (I declined) I asked if I could just get a coffee I was told I could only order a cafetière
Room, VERY comfortable
alittle noisy outside for a while , but itis on main road
Lovely hotel and staff very helpful and kind
Nothing
The lovely old courtyard. Our room and bathroom were really spacious.
Check in was not until 4pm. Breakfast was an extra charge which we thought was expensive. Also breakfast was only served until 9.30pm and that was a Sunday.
Facilities very good and clean
Room size little bit small, Bathroom floor very slippery even when dry
Wry friendly staff. Beautiful building. Clean spacious room . Great parking
Great location in centre if Grantham. Impressive building with lots of history. Small, comfy room. Great value for what I paid. Great shower. No air-conditioning, but receptionist had explained the age of the building. However, sash windows let in lots of air & fan provided. WiFi good. I didn't have breakfast, so can't comment on food.
Love the central location. Evening meal was excellent and breakfast was so tasty. Made really welcome and nothing was a trouble for staff. Courtyard was lovely to sit and chill with a cold drink 🍸 in the heat
Check in was 4pm a bit late but at a cost you could get early
Lovely friendly staff and a great historic building
Absolutely beautiful place to stay .
Nothing to dislike
Friendly welcoming lovely property very central
Nothing
Good locatiom.
Room was fine, although there was noise from the courtyard outside
I arrived at 3:40 and was told I would have to pay £10 to book in early. I could understand if that was 10:00 am but not 15:40
The hotel has a pleasing traditional feel, which makes a nice change from many modern hotels, which lack any personality. My room was smallish but attractively and traditionally decorated. The bed was comfortable. The ensuite bathroom was very clean and functioned well. I didn't have breakfast because I had to leave early. The reception staff were friendly and helpful. The one-night price compared very favourably with other hotels. Great parking once I'd found it!
I found the third floor quite hard work as I had a fair bit of luggage to lug up the stairs, although reception did offer to help, and when I left, they said they could try to accommodate this if I visited again. My forever wish is that hotels didn't use the sachets of coffee, etc., which are impossible to open; a small jar would be so much better, and a nice touch would be some fresh milk. My room was quite hot, so I had to prop the door open now and again.
The hotel location was excellent with helpful friendly staff and secure parking we did not have breakfast because at very nearly £20 pp we thought this expensive likewise the evening meals
The price of the breakfast and evening meals Ensuite floor became slippy when wet which was unavoidable when showering
Historic hotel with quite grand rooms. It was good to know that Richard the 3rd had stayed there! A decent evening meal on a set menu. The room was well decorated and I liked having a bath with lots of hot water. The staff were friendly and helpful.
There was a noisy party in the hotel until about 10 o'clock and I found the room at the top of the hotel very hot at night. Breakfast was £20 with a set menu for cooked breakfast; no continental option. But we found a pleasant cafe round the corner.
The old charm about the place
Breakfast price ?
The bed was very comfortable. Everything was very clean. Loved the old style decoration of the hotel. Dinner and breakfast was first class. The staff were so friendly and professional. Thoroughly enjoyed our 1 night stay. Would certainly stay again if we are working in Grantham.
The only thing I didn't like was the soup at dinner.
Central location
Price increase for forest festival weekend. Bathrooms are tired and old fashioned. Check in at 4pm is quite late.
The history of the place, the look of it, how clean too.
The only problem was a super thick duvet cover. Way too warm for June.
