Incredible location, really beautiful
We arrived after hours & the staff were great in putting the key in a lockbox. We found that relatively easily, but we struggled to then find the door to the accommodation. Clearer instructions would be helpful
A beautiful period room with, in general, a high level of comfort.
The bathroom fan continued operating long after the bathroom light had been switched off which distrubed sleep to some extent.
Would have preferred shower and toilet to have been ensuite
Wonderful location and rural setting. The ambience of the 'White Hart' onsite dining was a lovely experience. Nice cafés and coffee places onsite.
Lack of information on arrival - It wasn't very clear on where to go to park or check-in as guests. We weren't the only guests having this problem. I saw a couple of other arrivals parking up their cars on the double yellow lines and wandering around to try and find out where to go. Having slightly impaired mobility it was difficult to negotiate our heavy cases from the car to our room. On arrival, we were 'greeted' by a member of staff who seemed to take pleasure in telling us off for temporarily parking too close to the entrance to the courtyard where our rooms were located whilst we unloaded. We pointed out that her colleague had instructed us to park there to unload but she unapologetically replied that her colleague hadn't been working there very long (this wasn't a very warm welcome start top our holiday). There were lots of rules and regulations, many of which seemed slightly ridiculous; such as not being allowed to walk on the grass (which was dead anyway), which, perhaps rather cruelly, resulted in us dubbing the estate 'Colditz'. The room was very basic and the double bed was actually two single beds pushed together resulting in a chasmic divide over the course of the night! For the price, a little more comfort would normally be expected.
Location
I really appreciated the welcome centre where you were given your key and maps of the estate upon arrival. A lovely personal touch.

Hall, buildings, gardens & estate, tour. The staff are very helpful at the reception shop, the hall guide is very knowledgeable and informative. The various catering staff are friendly and efficient. Generally the estate is very well maintained but rooms require some updating and the windows need a clean.
The allocated room did not have wifi, no phone signal, the TV did not work, the bedcover was stained, and the furniture was of poor quality. The window needed a wash. However, the room was changed on request.
Beautiful property Two great cafes, had great breakfast both days, reccomend the bagels and sourdough avocado toast On-site restaurant was lovely also Beautiful location and grounds Lovely walks by river Large room with quaint decor
Inconvenient that the bathroom was outside of the room down the corridor slightly, however was private.
Simple clean and uncomplicated. We found the key left for us at the White Hrt bar and we posted it back through the Welcome centre door the next morning. No rush no bother. So much history...I had t realised how old it was. The food at The White Hart was utterly delicious, the staff were gentle and helpful.
Nought
We had a great time at Dartington Hall. The food in the White Hart (which is the attached restaurant) was excellent.
The car park is a short walk away. Also accessing the White Hart needs a short walk (100m) out into the open. This wasn't a problem for us but just be aware of it.
you cant really call the white hart a pub
The surrounding historical grounds. Everything but the room itself! Breakfast was nice and friendly lady hosting in the pub.
The room itself was very small, tired and bathroom grouting mouldy, and headboard very dusty. It wasn’t great.
Size of room, location. How clean it was. Breakfast , friendly staff.
I waited to be booked in. Im English, I don't mind waiting, however I was first in the queue at the desk. 3 staff were behind the counter and I locked eyes with two of them. Im not sure their role in the hotel but I would of like to have been acknowledged. A be with in shortly or can I help would of been nice. When I was dealt with the staff member was extremely professional and helpful and friendly.
Great atmosphere - reminded us of Hogwarts! Really nice restaurant with excellent food.
Good choice of breakfast items , cooked fresh and topped up.
Very tired accommodation, basic room facilities , two lights didn’t work, wine stains on the walls and mould in the bathroom.
Beautiful location, lovely gardens. Extremely helpful staff
Unfortunately my shower wasn't working very well, the hose was leaking everywhere and the shower tray wasn't draining away properly. Mentioned it to a staff member and straight away moved me to another room. I was up graded, very pleased with the new room.
My room in the East Wing first floor was basic but perfectly functional for what I wanted, a bed for the night. Secure, clean and warm it did the job. In fact so warm I had to turn the radiator off! The staff were lovely.
The breakfast was okay for a buffet style affair on the weekend and then cooked to order for the weekday I stayed. The only egg option on the weekend at the service table was scrambled, with it wet one day, not the other. I would have liked to have had more continental breakfast options like cheese, meats and boiled eggs, fresh bread etc.
The location was wonderful and all the staff very helpful.
Room 9 en suite had a strong odour of urine. Despite being clean it pervaded the room and the bedroom. The bathroom door was so close to the bed that it made the stay very unpleasant. It smelled as if there had been toilet flooding and under floor odour was awful. The morning breakfast was badly stocked with several key items significantly delayed while waiting to replenish. Staff were working hard and very professional but were let down by food supply. Congealed over cooked scrambled eggs and no veggie meat alternatives on offer, toast machine typical issues either underdone warm bread or burnt with second try .
Lovely quiet location with lots of history. Nice shower but the door leaked on to the floor. Nice clean towels.
The room was small and too warm with no temperature control. However we could open the window. TV also small and not working well. Remote control needed new batteries then after a while the TV stopped working altogether. The light was very bright. Only one bedside table and lamp.
Stunning location
Uncomfortable bed, too hard
Historic
Shower was very dirty, drains blocked & smelly. Bed and pillows uncomfortable. Room too hot. Breakfast was disappointing & finished early, there were no cups for tea/coffee & we had to find staff to ask for orange juice.
There was a Xmas market on. Lots of stalls. The setting , the building , the gardens , the lights were all amazing . The room was warm and comfortable despite it being December wet and cold outside. The breakfast was great - the room 12 on West Wing was very spacious , clean and the views were amazing . The staff were all very professional and helpful. We didn’t get to use the cinema or the gym. Loved the idea that some rooms on East Wing were dog friendly. Iron, ironing board and hanging space, internet , tv was all available.
Only a double bed - would have preferred a king size Very thick puffed up cushion to sleep on . Would have preferred option of some softer cushions. Would have preferred USB charger ports next to beds instead of just 3 in plugs.
Beautiful building and grounds.
Poorly maintained room. No heating, black mould in the bathroom, 2 out of 3 wall lights not working and the toilet blocked up.
Setting is amazing
Nothing
The location and the buildings garden
The room
Nice curtains, peace and quiet. Good food.
The room provided was on the first floor with a view into the courtyard. There was no offer of assistance with luggage to take it up the stairs, as it was a case of find it yourself or go without, as there was no other staff around, other than the receptionist. The immediate impression of the room, once found, was like walking into a Nuns cell. There were no decorative throw cushions on the bed, the furniture was black and chipped with the paintwork scratched and limited provisions of everything. The kettle was white with fur and unusable. There was only one bedside table, despite it being a double room. This was due the incorrect placement of phone cable charging points in the wall. The mattress did not fit the king-size bed and the divan base was stained, (amongst the patterned fabric). The dressing table chair was an old stained, paint chipped banqueting chair from the function room. The wall under the window was badly marked from previous customer suitcases. The bathroom appeared clean but, there was no rubber sealant on the bottom of the shower door, so the bathroom floor flooded badly. The ironing board cover was dirty and stained amongst the pattern and not good quality. And the blanket at the bottom of the bed was something from an old army barracks in appearance, bobbled and not attractive, despite its thick quality. The duvet cover was far too large for the double sized duvet, so much so, that your feet got tangled up in the material, when you tried to turn over in bed, with the material being stuffed under the duvet, to try to hide its size. Thankfully I took my own pillow. Then there was the window - a double window opening, only one window had a handle, the other had no handle. And the heating for such an old building must have been installed some 30 years ago, as the clanking of the old pipes was interesting.
Beautiful property and gardens externally.
Inside very basic and tired. Event noise kept me awake on the first night of my stay.
Beautiful property with lovely gardens. Staff were very helpful. The cinema was great. Great to have the pub so conveniently close in the courtyard. Lovely room and decor and lovely service. The breakfast was nice.
Went to the White Hart pub and did not enjoy the fish and chips I had sadly as fish was soggy. Felt overpriced for what it was. One evening I went to the pub at 7:35pm and was told the kitchen was full despite the pub being pretty quiet and having been told food was served until 8pm which was a shame. A light above the mirror in the room would be good, as the lighting in the room can be a bit low at the dressing table.
Price was good. Nice old buildings in a lovely setting.
It did have the feeling of being run on a shoestring
Extra large room with three beautiful windows with a view to the sea. Never staying at a Manor before I was spellbound by its grandeur. The dinning room was so elegant as was the staircase and chandeliers. Extra special with the Christmas decorations. Staff were lovely and I hope to return one day.
That I couldn’t stay longer.
The room and the main building were lovely .
The estate as a whole had the most distasteful unattractive modern building that really shouldn’t have been on such a historic site of a Grade 1 listed building .
Location. Nice room. Super view. Good breakfast. Room service good and it was clean and tidy.
WiFi in room zero. No wifi. TV from another era: square and tiny, and Missing tv channels eg ITV, ch4! Mattress needs replacing - it was lumpy. Only one bedside lamp.
The location was perfect for a one night stay so that we could attend a local function.
Would have liked a longer stay !! will definitely be returning so we can enjoy the surroundings in a more relaxed way. The one negative that we experienced was the very necessary complications via email after we paid our initial invoice and many unnecessary conversations about our booking and extra charges attempted to be applied on arrival saying we had only paid deposits for the single rooms for which was exactly what we booked and were aware of the particular limitations with a shared bathroom. However was perfect for two ladies sharing and the benefit of separate shower room and WC with our own keys and literally only a metre or so away from our room doors. The details on line were conflicting also with regard to the inclusion of breakfast or not -prices which varied at Dartington Hall compared to the Booking.Com site. This needs updating to be consistent within the businesses.
The location is exceptionally peaceful. The staff were friendly and helpful. There was a great breakfast included and plenty of dining options on site. The grounds were beautiful and well kept. The room was certainly warm enough and I was able to turn the radiators down.
My room was very small, although the bathroom was a fair size. But also the water in the shower took a long time to drain, although the staff explained that the plumbing was quite old. The bed wasn’t uncomfortable, but I could feel the mattress springs.
Fabulous location, very quiet with lovely surroundings. The staff were really helpful at the Welcome centre and we had a wonderful breakfast cooked to order in the morning, served by really nice staff.
Room and toiletries
Didn't go for breakfast as last time there was nothing for vegans, no milk alternative
The environment
Room was small
It's a beautiful old set of buildings (the Great Hall is 500-600 years old!). This means a bit of flex is required in terms of shower power or speed to hot water or ability to have the exactly right temperature in you room at all times. But it is so worth it - the people are lovely and the place is stunning and the history of its progressive activities over 100 years (or at least 75 years - the last 25 less so as various bits of its education have closed down) is fantastic and inspiring. The beauty of the gardens and your own Barn Cinema right there (with a magnificent 25% discount if you are staying!). Good breakfast and a lovely healthy/delicious/organic Green Table cafe up the road 30 seconds and several other food/drinks venues. And the lovely pub in the quadrangle. And absolutely stunning river, field, lane and woodland walks and bathing if you are brave. And the staff really are friendly and good people. And the trees....oh the trees, such beauties.
Quiet, full of old world charm free from the chaos of modern life.
Beautiful grounds, close to Totnes town driving, Hospitality of staff, faultless
A lovely location .Car parking very handy.
We sadly hadn't realized that the cost with booking.com did not include breakfast .The mattress was very soft . The television signal was hopeless and not able to watch it. would have appreciated a replacement toilet roll on the first day.
Very beautiful buildings and gardens
The pillows.
Atmospheric location, very helpful staff, comfortable rooms, and excellent food and service at the White Hart
Liked the location
Quality of room was low for the price, tv didn’t work, bathroom tired and there was mould, bed v small and lighting too bright. Had a bad experience ordering food on firework night. Breakfast was very average, had to pay extra for decent coffee.
The location was amazing. Beautiful gardens and walks. Every restaurant had amazing food. The barn cinema was really cute. The buildings were beautiful as was the whole trip.
The Bed was the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept in! My partner travels all over the world for business, so has slept on hundreds of different beds to compare.
Beautiful location and historic building. Staff very helpful. I was supplied with an oil heater when my room was cold. The breakfast host was attentive and very pleasant, she provided vegan options for me.
My room was cold the first night, with no additional blankets to be found. It was a massive faff locking and unlocking heavy doors and going through an additional fire door to use the loo, particularly in the night. No drinking water in the room. Initially i was told to go to the pub for it, then after emailing guest services the next day I was told water in toilet tap was drinking water. That felt unsavoury in a nice hotel taking several trips to fill my glass in the toilet sink!
A very quiet hotel with.immense character.
Nothing.
I loved the location as i was visiting friends in totness. Darlington hall was a amazing place to stay and look around the grounds.
Petit déj excellent
Beautiful location and helpful staff. Breakfast was nice. Walking around the grounds was wonderful. Bathroom was nice.
However our bed was very uncomfortable and small. The novelty of stay in an historic building is entirely spoiled by the very old mattress that was not fit for 2 people sleeping on it.
Lovely building & grounds
Rooms need updating. I appreciate it is an old building but a bit of TLC. New carpets, wash hand basin(cracks in ours)
What an interesting place. Wonderful gardens and magnificent ancient architecture. Good food in the pub for breakfast and very good coffee in the Green cafe with a wide selection of cakes. The walk down to Totnes was quiet and beautiful. In the evening we saw a barn owl in the garden.
We should have stayed for longer.
The location is wonderful, the staff are great. The restaurant is excellent.
The rooms are a little tired - broken window blind for example - poor hearing system and no where to dry towels
Fantastic historic location. Excellent breakfast. You must visit the gardens, the Green table cafe on the grounds also do amazing food.
All staff (reception, room service - excellent) - breakfast and location perfect Stayed at Dartington regularly and love the area -
The room was so hot! This was the only downside to our stay. The heating pipe running through the room was constantly on and hot - making sleep very uncomfortable (even with windows open) - unable to adjust the heating or switch it off. Radiators in corridors were constantly on and hot. Heating bills must be high! Adjustable heating would be welcome
Lovely characterful building and grounds.
Breakfast was poor value with little choice, especially for anyone not interested in a traditional cooked breakfast.
Location, White Hart, very helpful & friendly staff, excellent shower, all amenities in room, free use of garden etc.
Very poor wifi in East Wing which was not useable unless we sat in White Hart. Ditto for tv apart from BBC1 & a couple of other stations. Matter falling from skylight into shower. Some already there on arrival. Tap needs tightening in bathroom
The Dartington Estate is a beautiful estate with incredible gardens and very old buildings scattered all around the estate. It is close to the very nice town of Totnes.
Warm and cosy room. Lovely old building put to good use. Food excellent. Great breakfast and evening meal. Cinema on site. Bagel Café, best bagel we've ever had. Fantastic tour of the newly opened block.
Entrance hall of East Wing, created a bad impression as it could have done with a hoover and was very untidy, including a dustbin lid. Once we got inside our room it was fine. Signage could be better on site.
Location
Breakfast was open 30 minutes late and no one on reception at check out
Beautiful suite, so comfortable.
Wifi a bit slow and of course no phone signal. It was good to have a fan in the room because it was a bit warm.
historisches kloster und schöner garten personal war freundlich und versuchte so gut wie möglich zu unterstützen
schmutziges zimmer, schimmel an der wand im badezimmer. kaputte möbel, sehr enges bett
The setting is unique, the gardens and surroundings are beautiful. The Hall and accommodation are so impressive and good value for money. Breakfast in the White Hart is v good, and it's the right spot for a last drink in the evening. The cafes are all v good and if you're just looking for easy entertainment in the evening the Barn cinema is a treat.
I wish I'd studied the bus times a bit closer so that I realised the frequency of buses into Totnes. It's awkward to get to from Totnes late at night, taxi is best. The walk from the nearest bus stop isn't well lit at night, it's easy to get lost. The evening menu in the pub by the Hall is pricey, but the quality is good and the staff v helpful and generally lovely.
Located in a beautiful setting and staying in fascinating old buildings within well maintained grounds Dartington is a unique place to stay. The breakfast and food is also very good
The room was comfortable but a bit tired and in need of some TLC. Considering the cost this was Dissapointing
History and setting was excellent
Parking issues
Lovely location and restaurant available on site. The grounds were magnificent and well maintained.
There was nothing we did not like about the location or the accommodation.
It was old with character in a great location.
We arrived after dark, the outside lighting is somewhat underwhelming.
The grounds are absolutely stunning. Room was lovely Staff were helpful and friendly
Gardens and location was excellent. Room was nice although nowhere to hang a wet coat
Breakfast was disappointing.
Charging Station for EVs poor
Beautiful location
Too busy No food on a Sunday evening
convenient to my needs
The room was unbearably hot on what was not a cold night. There was no way to turn the heating down. We had to open the window wide which made the very squeaky door bang as it was a very wet and windy night. It was not a good night !
No way to control the heating. The room was far too hot as the heating was on full all night.
Stunning grounds, really nice to wake up in the morning on the property. The staff were very helpful, and there’s some nice cafes on site.
We had an issue with our first room being very noisy, but were moved quickly the next day which we appreciated
Dartington Hall itself, the grounds and the beautiful location . The food and service at the Hall was very good, too.
The fact that my bathroom was not an ensuite. However, I knew this before I booked, so was prepared. The decor in some places was old and tired.
Beautiful location in parkland and gardens. Friendly staff and early check in. Good breakfast.
We appreciate it is an old building, but - the bed was soft and uncomfortable and so high off the ground it was difficult to get on and off. The main problem was that the heating was on full blast all night with no way of controlling it, we opened the windows as far as we could, but it was still too hot - so we had an appalling nights sleep, too hot and soft mattress where we were rolling together. The check out staff listened to our complaint and said they would pass it on to 'her', not sure who 'her' is, but not really good enough for £160 a night.
The location and historic buildings are stunning
Quite a lot of steps and the room felt a bit ‘tired’
