Staff were welcoming, freindly and helpful. The choice of refreshments in the room were great. Breakfast was very good, with a good choice.
It is an old building and the attenuation between rooms and from the floor above were not as good as a new building. This is not the hotel's fault it is a consequence of a place with history and character.
Location
Price of breakfast
Friendly staff location and a great breakfast
Nothing
Perfect location, staff were so kind, food was amazing. I was on a solo trip and felt very safe.
There isn’t really anything negative to say about the property - but if I was to be really picky, I’m an early bird and it was a little noisy from the room I was staying in - but went quiet between 10pm - 11pm. It’s a beautiful place & people come and go for food, drinks and staying 🤍
Central location, good breakfast
Room was unpleasant, no external window in double bed part and none at all in twin bed part which was like a dungeon with not even a bedside light. Not clean, moved bedside table to find loads dust and an old earplug! Woman who checked us in, no eye contact, no hello, no welcome, just ' let me get logged in'. Air con unit message said it needed servicing, was filthy and smelled bad, sarcastic message regarding air con on wall Whole place feels like it needs updating, especially carpets, didn't feel relaxed at all.
The location was perfect, the food was amazing and the staff were nice and polite
Very dated
All good traditional inn with friendly staff good beer and good breakfast.
All was good.
Excellent staff serving a good breakfast. Very friendly and helpful.
I knew the room, number 22 was supposed to be small but it was so tiny as to be claustrophobic and it had no external windows. This made it very stuffy for sleeping and on one night of my stay there was what sounded like work being done right through the night. I complained about this but was told it was most likely the night porter doing his various duties. It certainly went on and on and it was noisy making sleep almost impossible. I was told the place was haunted but I don’t mind that. Ghosts are quiet, or so I understand.
The location - close to transportation and town centre
Very tired, very very soft bed and only one sheet as a ‘duvet’ (ok since a heat wave but still a light proper duvet would have been better), extremely hot room and air conditioning knowingly broken upon check in but didn’t tell us, so we went up three flights of stairs to the even hotter top floor, to be greeted by an ‘ out of order’ sign over the air conditioning unit, and one tiny fan blowing heat across the room. - the staff knowingly checked us in, failing to mention the entire hotel’s air conditioning wasn’t working , and apparently hadn’t been for several months. Fair enough not the staff’s fault, but we felt tricked for not having been told, sent up to the room - like we wouldn’t notice during the UK’s hottest ever summer. We should have been told at the time of booking. The manager seemed delighted to tell me the hotel doesn’t advertise air conditioning (they do as it’s classified as a ‘facility’.) like he’d got one up on us and couldn’t care less and was smirking at my annoyance and how upset I was for having had such a bad nights sleep. I said we didn’t even get any complimentary water in the room, and he said there was water provided - from the bathroom tap!!
Staff were amazing! Super friendly & professional.
Bathroom was a bit tight. Road noise.
The bed was fairly comfortable, and the staff were friendly enough.
I'm sure I didnt book a single room.. but here we are. The shower had black mould; the room was literally a 'Shoe Box' as the sign said on the outside of the door.
Great location, friendly staff, comfortable bed and good power shower. Breakfast buffet was not extensive but fine.
It's an old building which gives it character but the decor in the common areas looked a bit tired. (Had to keep curtains closed in my room as workmen were working on a flat roof outside but this was not the hotel's fault.)
I liked it was in town.
I was happy with my stay.
Lovely old building directly in the centre of town.Food in the hotel was excellent.
Car park was tiny.
Loved all the staff who went the extra mile.
Bit too shabby chic as in dire need of improvement.
No / little parking available at the hotel
We liked the location, the flag stone floors, the breakfast, the staff, the real ales on tap, the hotel building outside, the function room inside.
The location is absolutely excellent. At the end of the highstreet, walkable to the train station and right by the bus stop. It was easy to reach at all times of day and easy to get to our room. The staff were really friendly and accomidating and the pub was really lovely.
The room was not what was pictured online and was clearly the last to have a renovation. It felt tired and a little unloved with mismatched shabby furniture and a dated look. The AC was also broke during our stay, although we were provided with 2 desk fans, it was almost unbearable.
Location
A bit tired, needs decorating and some maintenance
The staff were absolutely wonderful in all areas.
The hotel is very tired and tacky in places.
The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and dealt with the many queries we had efficiently and pleasantly
The staff were extremely helpful and friendly
Decent breakfast with lovely staff! The room was tiny, but quite serviceable. I had seen a photo of the exact room so I knew what to expect. Excellent location at the foot of High Street, and lovely little park along the river on the opposite side.
Good location, nice room with 2 bedrooms for family. Very clean
Parking is a problem as there is none
Great to stay in a heritage property with so much character. Staff were brilliant and food was really good. We had dinner and breakfast.
The bed sloped a bit due to the floor being uneven. Could maybe have something put under it to level it out.
We loved our stay here. Ticked all the boxes for us nice bar area, good breakfast, dog friendly , clean , lovely staff and atmosphere. We had two evenings when we decided to just stay in and eat at the hotel restaurant both times we really enjoyed it the food was really nice .
Nothing
We liked everything about the hotel, food was great staff were fantastic and so friendly and accommodating, would definitely stay there again and recommend to friends and others.
There was nothing.
Bar areas were lovely
Main building and bedroom very dated and overdue refurbishment and redecoration
Location. Price. It was clean and warm. Staff provide extra tea, milk and coffees on request.
Limited car parking. Had to use the street, but would have to pay before 6pm and after 9am, and only allowed an hour.
We knew the hotel from previous visits
Nothing
Charming hotel with heaps of history, for an old building the rooms are in good condition, spacious and comfortable. Breakfast was freshly cooked and delicious. good quality bedding and towels etc, fan in room which was needed during heatwave. wonderful location although parking is virtually non existent so be prepared to use the long stay car park across the river, approx 10 minute walk away
Vegan breakfast was nice, location excellent, staff really friendly. Family , dog friendly room was great. Had a lovely 2 night stay.
A small thing but if youre asking for improvement, the red carpets are extremely grubby upstairs in hallway leading to the rooms and bathroom skylight very dirty and cobwebs but everything else was great. Just maybe attention to detail on those 2 parts would give a better overall impression perhaps.
The room was nice, clean and comfortable. The hotel is situated on a roundabout, at the beginning of the town which is very well situated to visit Totnes but which made for interesting noisy night life ;)
Parking was really difficult throughout the stay. There is basically no parking at the hotel, restrictions in every street and car parks are very expensive and the apps required in car parks difficult to navigate! Cars are not welcome in Totnes which is fair enough once you know this.
Hotel of 2 halves that don’t match. Downstairs is clean, fresh and modern, serving good food and staff were friendly. Had a good band on our first night which was nice. However the rooms really need some serious money spent on them. The shower was tiny and water didn’t wash down on you but pointed towards screen so you had to stand awkwardly. The furniture was very dated and had lots of knocks and bashes. The carpets were dirty and the whole room needed redecorating as did the corridors. Bed was comfortable but heavy winter duvet made for a hot night despite having a fan in the room. Would have been nice to have a fridge. The best thing about this hotel is the location.
Very comfortable mattress so had a great nights sleep. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was lovely with lots of options for freshly cooked hot food. The location is perfect for river trips and access to the town and shopping.
The only thing I didn’t like was that the bedside table was sticky and hadn’t been wiped over.
Lovely staff
Hotel room was very poor..needs updating
Nice, traditional place, well kept, very friendly, competent staff. Excellent central location.
Limited parking, no lift.
The staff very helpful friendly Location excellent
The hotel had plenty of character and kirsty at reception was very welcoming and helpful
Perfect location. I actually liked the old feel of the place. The bar and food were great, as were the bar staff. The room was clean and well presented
The reception man seems disinterested and was slow to attend to me. The room (affectionately called the Shoe Box) was very small - it was a single I appreciate but there wasn’t a lot of space, especially the en suite. I felt it was overpriced bed considering. The view looked directly at a lady at a desk! It was incredibly hot and the bed was only just 6’ long so I didn’t sleep too well.
Lovely location and very friendly staff very good breakfast
Nothing it was awful
The rooms are not equipped to deal with the heat. The beds are uncomfortable. It feels dirty. There are dead insects in the bedroom windows (room6). The paint and rendering is in a poor condition.
Character and location
Nowt
The simple old style hotel accommodation
Good location.
Air conditioning not working. Windows didn’t open fully. Was very hot. Dusty and toilet seat hadn’t been cleaned adequately.
1. Good, could take order a little earlier. 2. Fine
Do you mean breakfast.?
Het hotel ligt in het centrum. We hadden geluk en konden onze auto bij het hotel parkeren. De kamer was prima, personeel vriendelijk en het ontbijt uitstekend.
Het hotel is wat gedateerd, maar prima.
I have multiple food intolerances and the staff could not have been more solicitous. Thank you!! The bath and bed were lovely. The location perfect
The room was very comfortable, at the front of the hotel, a lot of traffic noise in the morning but we expected that, Breakfast and dinner were both very good, staff were very helpful.
The hotel is in need of a good makeover compared to the last time we stayed, St Austell Brewery should spend some money on this splendid old building
Perfect for visit to Totnes. Main Street outside the door and river a short walk. Bus service nearby.
N/s.
The food was lovely. The staff were very helpful and went above and beyond. The hot chocolate was to die for!
The stairs were a challenge as I use a walking stick.
A very well-presented room in a historic building. Good food was available in the restaurant in the evening and the bed was extremely comfortable.
Service of breakfast did not start until 8.00, which was a bit too late for me as I had to catch an early train to London.
Beliggenhed, meget stemningsfulde og hyggeligt hotel
Kun en meget lille parkeringsplads så kan det være at man skal parkere på High street ( gratis 6pm - 09 am) indtil der bliver en ledig plsds. Patience required here.
Staff were obliging, and breakfast was good.
Our room on the third floor was exceedingly hot, 33ºC at 10:30pm. The room had an air conditioner but it didn't work, the fault was reported but it was not fixed during our stay. The windows had restricted opening as expected on the third floor which meant the air flow was minimal so it was both hot and very stuffy. The whole of the third floor was very hot.
Bien mais sans plus.
Location and staff
Breakfast and evening meal was good
Room was advertised with AirCon - which I understand had not been working for a long time (the aircon was a deciding factor in booking this hotel during a heatwave - so that was a bit disappointing)
Breakfast, AC in the room, location, staff all excellent
Nothing
Staff and location
Shabby rooms in need of refurb
Love the seven stars .second time if staying great staff and perfect room and location .
Location
Extremely hot room. Initially put us in the loft during heatwave with no working AC , they need move us in the end
Location and friendliness
Excellent breakfast. The room had air conditioning and extra pillows were provided.
It is an incredibly noisy location and some of the younger members of staff haven't been trained to address guests properly. On arrival the duty manager called me "mate" and the breakfast waitress kept calling me "my lovely". Whatever happened to "sir" and "madam"?
Position
Noisy music from the bar until 11pm
The parking at the the back was convenient. The staff were pleasant and helpful. The coffee was very good.
The room was noisy and light (from ineffective curtains/street lights). The bed dipped on both sides with a ridge down the centre. Breakfast was disappointing - we paid the additional £21 and were really looking forward to the hotel's 'Fabulous breakfast', but it turned out to be very basic.
A lovely , friendly hotel in a great location.
The staff were all really nice and very helpful
Air conditioning wasn’t working
Restaurant food was excellent
Not keen on Country and Western Band!!
The room, happily. was the same one we stayed in on our previous visit. As before it was perfectly clean, coffee and tea plus delightful biscuits. the location is perfect for a visit to Totnes, on the doorstep to the town, pubs and restaurants plus. in our case moments from the bus stops to a number of good locations. We didn't have breakfast r dine at the hotel as we like to get out and about for that but I have no reason to doubt that all would be great. We will be back in the future!
Nothing
I love the historic charm with lots of wonky angles. Fabulous central location. Named rooms are fun.
A bar fridge would have been good.
Everything: situation, atmosphere, lovely room with Aircon, great shower, great food, great staff.
Nothing
Great location and the staff were very welcoming and helpful
Very central location. I needed a 1-night stay on a Sunday night and this hotel was one of the best value rooms on offer. The room had a shower and I was impressed with the tea and coffee facilities and the shampoo/conditioner provided. It also had a TV. Bed was pretty comfy and the hotel had a quaint vibe.
When I arrived I was given a room called ‘the shoebox’ which was a true description as I could nearly touch each wall with my arms outstretched. It was just wide enough for a single bed and a small desk/side table. However it did the job and it didn’t really bother me, as I didn’t need to spend much time in the room anyway. I was a little concerned that the noise from the restaurant/town would’ve stopped me from getting to sleep but it was fine, perhaps as it was a Sunday, however there was a door (the main entrance from the foyer to the rooms) that kept getting slammed that kept disturbing me. I got to sleep ok in the end and then I forgot to mention on check-out. But the hotel would do itself a great service to put a soft-close action on that door! It must disturb all rooms on that side at it is very loud.
Location. Easy check in/out.
Air conditioning old and inadequate. Smelly, partly blocked sink. Not all lights were working.
Very good Eggs Benedict.
Nothing really
Nice location and super staff
It was really hot. The air conditioning didn’t work well and the bathrooms need to be cleaned
Friendly staff, good breakfast
Wonky floors and being on the top floor of hotel.
The night watchman walked food to me across the street to whete I was waiting for a bus, twice. Mark was exceptional, going above and beyond his duties
Central location Nice room Large bed Nice complimentary biscuits Bottle of water in room
No A/C, just one weak fan in a heat wave Shower head fell down on me a few times, very dated, needs replacing Water in shower went cold when someone else in hotel used hot water No plugs next to bed No sachets of instant coffee, only tea (albeit 10 different types of tea)
Excellent location in Totnes. Staff were lovely. Room clean and functional.
Some information about the history of the place in the room would be good.
Great location, comfortable good size room and nice bit of history
Room was clean but aircon non existent! It was so hot in my room couldn’t feel like you could breathe. No fridge to keep food/drinks cool which I needed for work the next morning. Also bedding wasn’t cotton so the material made you feel even hotter! Had to sleep on the floor it was so unbearable. Also car parking is awful got blocked in and disturbed to move my car. The hotel is run down and is in need of a revamp.
Return visit in 2 weeks. Great location, clean comfortable. Big thanks to Kieron who sorted my complicated bookings with such grace! All staff are great. Good food and snacks.
Loved Agatha Christie room with four poster bed. No air con in this room though. Had to rely on fan in the heat wave. Limited parking
We quite enjoyed our stay here. Staff was very helpful in helping us to navigate the car park. Note they have 20+ rooms and only about 7 or 8 car spaces so it always fills up. There are cheap options not too far away in such a case. We got lucky and snagged a space both nights. Our room was all the way upstairs, with a view over the small monument. The room was spacious and had a coffee tea station, Bathroom was good. The location is great at the foot of Totnes. Quite central. Walk to all shops and restaurants, and also there is a Morrisons within easy walking distance. It's a charming town and makes a great Devon base for Dartmoor and the coast. I certainly recommend this property.
Central Near where we had to go
Limited parking. Was ok as we were staying a Sunday
Had character , staff were good .
We rise quite early but it is a pub and people were in there till late . It was a summer evening And as I feared it was very noisy.
Central, easy to check in, free parking if arriving early. Friendly responsive staff.
Our room needs a little bit of a refresh but it was fine for the price.
The breakfast meals we had were superb, the other meals and drinks were also excellent, the staff very friendly and polite. The location for us was excellent.
Nothing.
Old traditional pub/ hotel
Only issue lock of parking otherwise perfect
nice town good breakfast
small car area
All very good
Nothing
Location and it had a nice bar and outdoor sitting area.
Room was a bit tired
The location was very convenient being in the centre of Totnes while also being quite quiet at night.
We could only open the window a little way so it was a bit stuffy and hot at night.
Central location and pretty looking building
Very tired decor and attention to detail poor - particularly in the bag of goodies for the dog and ourselves. Very poor, food in the evening. We had stayed in a sister hotel In Topsham the night before which was very very good and was cheaper
The staff were wonderful. The building was full of character. It was clean and comfortable.
Parking could be problematic
Lovely quirky hotel. Great location in the town centre. Good food. Delightful staff. Air conditioning in the room. Dog friendly.
Parking… or lack of its very small car park. Limited on street parking.
Great quirky hotel in the middle of Totnes. Good food, tasty breakfast with good choice including veggie and vegan. Great staff. Cosy rooms with air conditioning, dog friendly. Comfy beds. Parking challenging as only a very small car park. Lots of steps and no lift.
Great location and a great pub atmosphere. Close to bus stop and train station. Wonderful staff
Dated small bathroom, mouldy tiles and ceiling above shower.
