Provider-sourced guest reviews.
Excellent staff. Very nice room. Great breakfast.
Nothing.
Easy to find, ample parking, views and outdoor areas, relaxed seating indoors.
Being overcharged in excess of 30% until highlighted to the hotel of their significant error. Several other guests also overcharged on arrival. Additional charge at breakfast for a latte costing 3.50 when I had paid £20 for breakfast. Small cups in the bedroom, no fresh milk in the room, staff polite but lacked a friendly attitude
Cozy classy hotel tucked away in a quiet corner of Borrowdale. Well situated for access to walking, cycling and climbing. Tastefully decorated with excellent food and friendly staff.
Great restaurant with fixed menu for dinner, good value for money. Right at the foot of Cat Bells, so ideal for hicking in the Lake District.
Location was beautiful
Location, and the property was charming
The location was beautiful but a little remote. The room was nice, comfortable but smaller than I expected. The set menu dinner was nice but not amazing. The waiters were very good and attentive.
We stayed 2 nights. Parking at the hotel was a little limited. The hotel bar closed at 10pm and there is nowhere else nearby. The beds were made but the bathroom and room wasn't cleaned, towel left in shower not refreshed, bin not emptied etc
Quiet location with great views, away from the crowds. Comfortable bed, great food and service. 2nd stay at Borrowdale Gates, will definitely return.
Comfortable, stylish, boutique hotel. Receptionist/Manager Stephan was superb. He was helpful and warm & personable. We also appreciated drinks vouchers for some complimentary beverages, he also gave us invaluable advice for our sightseeing which really helped us experience the area, including walking equipment required, buses to catch, routes etc… he is an asset to the hotel.
The portions of the food were far too small. No blinds on our ground floor bedroom. Not enough entertainment, there should be a pianist in reception or music. And a little tuck shop where you can purchase things because it is so remote.
Zeer mooie locatie.
Het diner moest zeer snel gaan.
Great location in the beautiful Borrowdale area. Friendly and attentive staff.
Nothing
The food is excellent. This is fine dining. Chef is great!
Our room was hot as it was above the boiler room, but in winter that would be a bonus. Beautiful room, so comfortable.
Really well appointed. Quality furnishings and decor. The views are beautiful and generally a lovely place to be.
The bar draught taps didn’t work. Most of the staff were great. Some could have smiled a bit more.
Great location and staff
Cleaning of rooms late late on our second day and tea coffee. .toilet rolls etc not fully restocked despite request at reception. No option for a 2 course evening meal
Beautiful setting, very comfortable and spacious room with a nice little terrace and a fantastic view of the surroundings.
The restaurant only does fixed menus, no a la carte possibilities.
Good restaurant
Poor customer service. This place could be so much better! When we arrived after a long day of hiking there was no one on reception and took ages for staff to check us in as they were all busy with the dinner service. We were sent on our own to our rooms which were very difficult to find in a convoluted space. This hotel is located in beautiful grounds. However, our very expensive room was overlooking the car park. Furthermore, I was very disappointed by the way a booking error was handled. I accidentally booked the wrong month, but paid again for the correct dates and stayed at the hotel as planned. At checkout, I was told the hotel understood the situation and would support my refund request through Booking.com. However, I was later told that no refund could be offered because the original booking was non-refundable. Unfortunately, the way this was handled has left me with a very negative impression of the hotel and its customer service.
Beautiful hotel in gorgeous setting. Very tastefully decorated and comfy. Food was fabulous!
Beautiful location, super comfortable room with spacious bathroom
Some confusion with restaurant reservation which showed a lack of continuity in the room and restaurant offer
Die sehr ruhige und schöne Lage.
Leider gibt es als Abendessen nur ein Menue zur Auswahl, was entsprechend teuer ist.
This hotel is in a fabulous location with excellent walking from the doorstep into the Borrowdale valley. The hotel was extremely comfortable with plenty of space to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Our balcony room had an amazing view of Grange village and the surrounding fells. The hotel room was most comfortable with excellent facilities. There was a super choice for breakfast which was always delicious and the staff were very accommodating when approached for additional items. The evening meals were very elegantly presented with robust flavours to compliment the initial feast for the eyes.
The only criticism we could mention were the balcony chairs and table. The chairs were uncomfortable and the paint finish was rough. While understanding a heavy chair is required to withstand the Lake District weather and not blow away, an alternative would have made our stay more pleasurable.
Beautiful location ! Freshly refurbished room. Very elegant and cosy restaurant with amazing views. Delicious food. Few minutes drive to Keswick.
Old windows that we struggled to close. Some of the staff seemed a bit snobby. No bread at the buffet. All had to be ordered. No coffee machines. Had to order and pay for a coffee separately. ( although coffee in itself was lovely)
My Room was great (free upgrade to a ground floor suite); the location, of course, is awesome - so peaceful with stunning scenery. The food was excellent! Lots of choices for breakfast, with excellent local products. Dinners were exquisitely prepared, and delicious.
I liked everything
The location was good for me. As I was looking for a quiet place. it is very remote with limited access to public transport.
The room wasn't cleaned. I fact there was no one to clean the room. I stayed for three days but they didn't send anyone to clean, change the towel or do anything like any other hotels. It was strange, the hotel gives you a drink voucher instead of cleaning the room. You need to do it yourself.
Beautiful location- views from breakfast were spectacular. Great walks on the doorstep Stefan on reception was fabulous- he resolved an issue we had with great creativity and elegance. Had our keys waiting for us when he spotted us returning through the car park post walk. He is a credit to the hotel 😃
Some issues with lack of water in the bathroom
Stunning location.
Absolutely stunning hotel
Lovely hotel, rooms are beautifully decorated and clean. Location is perfect, short drive to Keswick and easy to walk to fells from the front door. Staff were very helpful.
Decor, location, staff, food is excellent, very well maintained
Excellent experience, friendly staff, amazing food and breathtaking views all around 10/10 would come back again

Stylish, romantic, hotel with splendid views, excellent service, friendly staf. Ideal for visiting the Dales.
The kitchen closes strictly at 9PM.
Location is great. Helpful staff.
Dinner pricing 😊
I loved the relaxed atmosphere and the friendly staff
Nothing
La vue - la bienveillance du personnel et la qualité de la restauration.
La literie pourrait être améliorée.
Great location and fantastic food.
Some staff were not very pleasant or helpful.
Beautiful location, hotel seemed recently renovated and staff were friendly.
The only negatives we experienced was the mattress seemed to have collapsed at the edge of the bed and the hotel seemed short staffed which is no one’s fault. Other than that it would be a solid 10/10
Location. Restaurant. Room had a lovely view and was well equipped.
Nothing really
Fantastic location and very friendly staff
Excellent location, really good breakfast. Country house feel.
Cleanliness of the hand basin in the en-suite bathroom. Condition of one of the pillows.
The staff were friendly and helpful getting my room ready early so I could get ready for a wedding. The breakfast and rrom it was served in were lovely. Car parking was very good.
Room rate wasn’t cheap but everywhere in this area is expensive to be fair.
Very nice and cosey, good location for getting into town. Very nice views and parking
Dinner menu was majority cooked in wine and not much to choose from
Gratis upgraden naar een kamer met een schitterend uitzicht, top
Food and location are very good. The restaurant staff is amazing.
Ventilation in the room was very poor. There were no fans available even when we requested. It was like a microwave and very uncomfortable to sleep.
Quaint and stunning. Feel relaxed and rejuvenated.
The staff are so friendly. The location is the best.
Nothing.
cleanliness, spacious rooms, very comfortable bed
Nothing, happy with everything
Everything about this hotel was fantastic. The location is breathtaking, quiet and yet only short distance from Keswick. The staff are excellent and the food is absolutely 5 star. Cannot recommend highly enough and value for money that I have never experienced before.
Zero to dislike.
The area is breathtaking and the staff is magnificent! Hazel, who waited on me for breakfast every morning was one of the kindest people I’ve ever met. That woman is a national treasure and should be protected at all costs! The property has clearly been recently renovated and is just beautiful. I couldn’t be more pleased with my first stay in the Lake District!
It’s not close to anything besides nature so be prepared to drive or eat at the hotel if you need anything quick.
Fantastic welcome and service from Stefan at the front desk. He is a great asset to our experience. Beautiful views, great food, spacious room with balcony. Stunning gardens. We had a fabulous stay.
Balconies should have more privacy. Also the entry to the hotel could have more ambience. And more choices of tea in the room (mint, chamomile etc.).
The food was exception - complements to the chef
Could have been cleaner
Amazing property set in an outstanding location, start where attentive and friendly.
Breakfast was beautifully cooked and presented. Great choice. Views at breakfast were stunning. Staff were incredibly helpful.
Some confusion with booking.com - I had booked breakfast with the booking and also upgraded my room. when I got to the hotel, breakfast had not bee included and we had to pay for this separately. This was disappointing and embarrassing for both the hotel and us.
The location
Suite was tired smelt of damp food wasn’t great staff eager to point out class at 10 pm
Very nice and well organised. It is a fine dining restaurant.
I didnt realise it was fine dining and we hiked in so there was not really an alternativr for us to choose from. It is amazing in the right circumstances, just that we didnt realize and felt underdressed and more of a bother.
The area where it is is great and it was very good staying there,,
The hotel has a great location. It’s clean and recently refurbished. The dinner restaurant is really nice with a touch of fine cuisine. Very good choice of hiking trails around, though many have steep descents, so poles are nice to have.
We were not allowed to have lunch at the hotel after checkout.
Very clean and modern decor. Comfortable furniture and well sized rooms. Friendly staff
No fridge in the hotel room
Unfortunately, not much to like. The bed was comfortable. Nice location.
The room wasn’t properly cleaned when we checked in! Besides the furniture being dusty - which is something I could have ignored - the bathroom was dirty. There were stains on the toilet seat! Bathroom floor seemed like it hadn’t been cleaned in quite some time. It was dirty and there were small hairs around. Breakfast was probably one of the worst we’ve experienced in a long time. The buffet selection was poor and the cooked breakfast was just not tasty. The bacon was thick and rubbery. Sausage rubbery as well. Even the scrambled eggs were rather watery. Overall, very disappointed with our experience. Definitely not value for money.
Location, scenery around, tasteful decor, amazing food!
Need to have fan in window to let air in without bugs. Airless room.
The location and views were wonderful. Staff were attentive, cheerful and engaging. Food was exceptionally good and the catering staff went above and beyond to cater for a vegan in our group - separate vegan menu with multiple options was provided and the items updated on a regular basis - "the best cauliflower steak she has ever had". We were impressed the sustainability vouchers which gave a cash voucher (for use in the hotel) if you choose not to have your room cleaned - £5 per day.
There was little to dislike, however, there were housekeeping errors which needed addressing. Once they were pointed out, the situation was generally rectified.
Its location is fabulous. Rooms have great decor. Restaurant is fabulous. Great views.
The room was a bit dusty. The sink and shower wastes need cleaning. Attention to detail missing in areas of hotel and service. One member of staff at breakfast could be heard complaining about working there.
The location is lovely, very peaceful. The outside back of hotel seating area/ garden has delightful views, and children enjoy walking around the hotel and can play safe. The restaurant, and lounge areas are comfortable and beautifully designed
There wasn’t anything I didn’t like, all good to me.
The hotel is in a superb location with great walks on your doorstep. The hotel has a pleasant garden for relaxing and a large car park. My bedroom was spacious, nicely fitted out in a modern style and benefitted from a lovely view down the valley of Borrowdale. The catering was of a very high order.
Nothing!
Everything was lovely. Beautiful rooms and garden, great location and delicious food.
Lovely hotel in a beautiful setting. Staff were lovely, special mention to Hazel who really looked after us!
Everything! The location is stunning , the hotel is clean and very comfortable. The staff were friendly and welcoming The food is outstanding
There isn’t anything I dislike
Central location for hiking
Beautiful views
We loved Borrowdale Gates. We stayed here for three nights while hiking in the Lake District. So many hikes are accessible directly from the hotel - which was amazing. The restaurant was amazing. Definitely very refined cuisine, and everything local. The food was exceptional. Special shout out to Hazel at the bar, and to lovely Shaneen at the front desk. Everyone was great.
We liked it all. It was a bit expensive, but worth it.
Beautiful hotel, helpful friendly staff, perfect location.
Nothing not to like.
Quality breakfast, with fantastic views
Couldn’t fault anything
Gorgeous location and the main areas of the hotel were well kept
Our room was dusty and dirty. It definitely needed a refresh and a good clean.
The location is gorgeous. Set out in a very small village but close enough to Keswick.
The bathroom felt dirty. There were cobwebs and a spider on our ceiling. The bottom of the shower door was covered in mould. The bathroom was also very small and the fixtures and fittings felt too big for the space
Brilliant, staff went above and beyond to facilitate sleeping arrangements at very short notice would highly recommend
Rooms were lovely, great bathroom and products. Very comfy bed and lovely decorated room!
Location to walks
On arrival - reception blank, cold greeting. No helpful information. Just given the key to room.
A gem of a hotel in the most peaceful and beautiful spot.
One waitress spoilt the atmosphere for us. She must have been having a bad day - grumpy and wearing a ‘jobsworth’ attitude. Such a shame as everything else about our stay was perfect, as were her colleagues.
I absolutely loved the peaceful atmosphere and stunning surroundings - waking up to those Lake District views felt so calming. The room was cosy and beautifully kept, and the little details really made it feel special.

Nice property, good staff, great location.
It says pet friendly, it is not, dogs are not allowed anywhere in the hotel, not even the bar, I accidentally booked this place thinking I was booking into the Borrowdale, not the Borrowdale gates, at the Borrowdale pets are welcome.
The location is great for walkers and the gardens are stunning to relax if the weather is good
The only down side is they only do a set menu.. 2 course £42 or 3 course £58. We were not very hungry but no other eating places close by so it was an expense we didn’t need
Lovely hotel in a stunning location. Very comfortable with friendly staff and good food… breakfast excellent
Vegetarian food for evening meal was pretty poor fare
Veggie food again
Lovely grounds and location. Excellent breakfast. Pleasant lounge area.
Nothing much but no pool or other facilities.
The location was fantastic. We did some amazing walks. The dog friendly room was large and led to the garden outside. Restaurant and food lovely. Staff very friendly
There was nothing bad about the property
I was delighted to receive a complimentary upgrade when we checked in for our one-night stay at the Borrowdale Gates. I hadn’t mentioned anything to the receptionist who was incredibly polite and helpful, but me and my partner had just got engaged that morning. The upgrade made our experience extra special. We have stayed in so many B&B’s around Keswick and this hotel is by far the BEST. It’s stylish and modern, supremely clean, in a great location, comfortable, and unbelievably quiet! It was perfect. The breakfast was outstanding too. The morning before we paid £14 each for a breakfast at a local cafe, and the one here was better in almost every way. Huge thank you to all of the staff, we can’t wait for our next visit.
The only downside was that the bar was very expensive.
Staff were friendly esp Stephan at the front desk. The rooms were clean and their dinner was so good.

Beautiful location and gardens Dog friendly rooms. Breakfast was very good. Comfortable, well equipped rooms Friendly staff
While they have dog friendly rooms, you can’t take dogs to the bar or restaurant- meaning you need to eat out at one of the local dog friendly pubs rather than the restaurant in the hotel.
The location of the hotel was great! Close to the lake and just a couple minutes drive in the car from the town centre which is exactly what we wanted. The room was very cosy with a lovely modern bathroom.
The only downside about the hotel is that the walls must be very thin, we could hear people having conversations in the rooms either side of us, any sound/noise seemed to carry throughout your room.
This is our second time at Borrowdale Gates as it is located in a very gorgeous location. Do take care to select a room with a view of the fields as we were originally allocated a room overlooking the road & refuse bin. We requested a different room and paid for the upgrade. Dinner was superb, the hotel staff did a great job decorating the table as a birthday surprise for a family member. Breakfast was good, we had a good view of the garden and saw a few rabbits hopping around, woodpeckers and many local birds in the garden. The nearby walks were so lovely, the hills, fields and many sheep. Great place to recharge and enjoy nature. x
Great location, quiet and scenic. Hotel small enough for personal service, good rooms well decorated and comfortable, easy parking.
Very unhelpful manager, refused to let me reserve a specific table on my wife’s birthday (despite this being no problem in past years under the old management). She told me that it was an unreasonable request! Also told me that ‘your food will taste the same whichever table you sit at’ . The most annoying thing was that there were three tables obviously being kept for certain guests. There was no room cleaning during our stay. At breakfast I saw four guests leaving reception with two toilet rolls each. Obviously their rooms were not serviced either! The breakfast and dinner on the first day were very poor, fortunately much better next day, (different chef?) This is not a cheap hotel to stay at. In the past it maintained a high standard, otherwise we would not have returned. Unfortunately the standard of service was quite inadequate on this occasion.
Loved the room decor, bathroom, comfortable bed, amazing view, good access for our dog, lovely fresh breakfast, lots of choice and suitable for gluten free.
The bathroom floor stayed very wet for the entire time we were there after taking showers on the evening. Small portion of gf cooked breakfast.
Beautiful location. Friendly staff made us feel very welcome. Excellent evening meal - the food was delicious.
Ein hervorragendes Hotels mit sehr guter Küche. Hilfsbereites, aufmerksames Personal
The location!! Surrounded by gorgeous scenery, very quiet, and perfect for chilled mornings listening to the birds! The rooms are beautifully decorated and super comfortable.
Beautiful location, very clean
Nothing
Fantastic food, staff and facilities where exceptional. The room was incredibly comfortable and lovely also.
Not particularly dog friendly.
Beautiful location. Friendly staff. Fantastic food.
TV didn't work unfortunately, the staff were unable to sort before we left but it didn't spoil our stay.
Great location. A decent breakfast, but choice was a little limited if you didn't want a cooked breakfast. Toast from sliced bread not good enough for a hotel of this class. Evening meal excellent.
Nothing much, apart from comments above on the breakfast.
