Mooie kamer met fantastisch bad. Goed restaurant.
Parking was easy , Shower had good pressure , big room
No 3 pin plug available in bedroom or usb charging point . Had to charge phone in another room . Not practical for Alarm. Had to book what time I wanted breakfast despite it saying available 8-11am .
The good: We did get an email through booking.com from The Sun Inn 2 days prior to arrival stating that their restaurant and bar is closed on Tuesday evenings at the moment, so there wouldn't be anyone onsite to check us in. The key would be left in the door. (Strange, but ok). The bad: No one on premises to check us in when we arrived or throughout our stay (one night, overnight)--no outside lighting (very dark). Name was on a paper on a downstairs door, skeleton key was left in our room door, which was up a flight of stairs and through another door down a corridor. Sewage smell so bad from bathroom plumbing, we kept door shut and barely used the bathroom. Gnats coming through open walls in bathroom around plumbing and in tile.
In mid-August the hotel prices in Edinburgh are insane and this hotel was the only reasonably priced place I could find for an overnight stop near the city. I arrived late but that was no problem for checking in (see below). Ample free car parking. The bathroom was good.
There was no staff at the hotel at all when I arrived. They had emailed me beforehand about this. There was a note on the entrance about my room number and the room key was in the door. Very impersonal. There is a very steep and narrow staircase to get up to the rooms, not easy to navigate with heavy bags. The hotel is situated right on a busy main road. I had to close the wooden shutters to keep the traffic noise out, which wasn't great because the room was already rather stuffy. The view from the room was just the road and a huge railway viaduct. The lady at breakfast was rather dour, a smile seemed to be too much trouble. Breakfast is only a la carte, there was no buffet.
The breakfast was cooked to order and was delicious. However, on the morning we left home we received an email saying that the bar and restaurant would be closed that evening. This was a little disappointing as I had spoken to the hotel when booking and was not informed of this. Plus point-the room was a good size and the bed was huge and very comfortable
When we arrived there was a skeleton staff. We were told which were our rooms and left to find them. We ask on two occasions for additional pillows and did not receive them. We also asked for an additional sheet and did not receive this either. We ended up removing the quilt from its cover and folding it to use as pillows and used the quilt cover as a top sheet. The shower was fantastic but the bathroom really needs an extractor
The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating. Location was great, situated outside of Edinburgh but the bus stop is a 5 mins walk down the road which took approx. 40 mins to get into the city centre. Food served in the on-site restaurant was delicious. Overall, very good value for money!
food, room
noisy as on main road
Our room wasn't clean and we had to let the staff no....they did change our room but that wasn't really any better.....dust...cobwebs....dead flies....spiders !!. We had stayed there before be it a few years back and it was lovely hence we went back and took family with us but our experience this time was very very different.
Cleanliness and wasn't worth what we paid....we had paid for 2 nights.
Great room and facilities- staff were super friendly and helpful and the food was excellent
Close proximity to my place of work
No food available on Mondays or Tuesdays which is disappointing, so have to go out to eat somewhere else!
Como he comentado arriba
Quiet, good food at restaurant, staff were great
Have to walk up to train if you don’t have a car
Location
Pub closed
The bar was lovely area to sit in . The breakfast was great. The staff was friendly.
The inn is right next to a main road A7 so loads of noise off the road. The restaurant I was very disappoint due to choice and the menu was not a lot to choose from. The meal was booked for 7.30 and when we went to order 3 starters were sold out. I had minute steak which was just one big thin slice of sliver side £26 had full plate of chips . I would not stay there again. The bar closed at 22.00.
Great breakfast. 5 mins to rail to get to Edinburgh. Good pub atmosphere
Not suitable for elderly, as the stairs to the room were quite steel and narrow.
Very nice place, great room, lovely staff and good food. I would definitely recommend this hotel.
I couldn’t get the tv to work I’m sure they would have sorted it but I wasn’t really bothered so I never asked.
Comfortable bed. Adequate tea, coffee etc
Not being informed in advance that bar and restaurant was closed (for refurbishment according to sign). The only other pub in the village was also closed. No attempt by Manager to apologise or provide transport to a suitable restaurant. Noisy road, hard to reach sash window to close.
first and foremost the food was very and i really mean very good. My room was nice and clean everything you need was there. Also it is ideal if you want to visit Edinburgh it's just a short way to drive. If i ever visit Edinburgh again i'm staying here for sure.
Nothing really worth mentioning.
Going home. Lots of lovely towels, good breakfast eventually!
From the poe faced un-smiling bar tender who checked us in, to him checking us out the whole birthday treat was a debacle! Not worth the money spent and very disappointed. Have wanted to try out the Sun Inn for ages and wished we hadn't bothered. Shocking! Craig didn't know what keys where what, what time dinner or breakfast or check out either, we tripped over the henry hoover, dirty towels and linen on the way to the room (at least the cleaner smiled and said hello). The room was large and perhaps when it was first refurbished it would have been amazing.... however very tired now... Cigarette ends around the freezing cold 'hot tub' with rusty pumps and a hood that was not attached. Door hanging off the sauna, and no working instructions. Outdoor seating covers disgustingly dirty and covered in bird poo Dirty curtains, marks on walls, sink tap hanging off, hook on bathroom door ripped off, flooring coming apart and dust everywhere. No hair dryer, no milk, no biscuits 😢 no guide to local facilities/attractions or the Inn itself! Even a wifi code or opening times would have been a wee bonus! (£245 per night for bed and breakfast) i would have thought we'd at least get some luxury toiletries - body lotion, shower gel, conditioner, cotten buds, Instead we got a tiny bar of soap and a tiny bottle of shampoo 😀 know its Scotland but this was stingy, miserable and mean! Lunch/Dinner was only available until 3pm. (Thank goodness id brought some snacks for the room!) We spent £205 for a three course meal for two with cocktails (I was asked by the lovely Felicity who served us if I wanted the rim of thw glass salted, but then 'happy Craig' brought it over to us with no salt ... he explained that there was no salt on the premises until I pointed out we even had salt on our table! I then was informed/lectured that it had to be rock salt or it wouldn't work???? Really! Lol ...
Picturesque, restaurant on site staff helpful, friendly ,helpful with getting bicycle in order
20 minute walk to eskbank train station if you don’t have a car
Mooie plek
Diner en ontbijt was zeer beperkt beschikbaar
Excellent breakfast.
The staff were very courteous and welcoming. The breakfast fayre was very good
Due to lack of custom, the inn effectively closed around 8pm each evening, which was surprising
Zeer fraaie suite met jacuzzi, sauna enz.
?
Repeat customer. Lovely big bed and room with plenty amenities. Gt food and 1st class service. Ample parking too.
Nil
Friendly staff comfy room
Strange sewer smell from toilet in bathroom.
Excellent facility. Cool with a quirky oldie world twist. Bed was comfortable unfortunately I never had the chance to take a bath which looked like it would have been amazing. The staff were very helpful, warm and friendly. Overall a fantastic place to stay and eat.
The facilities were excellent and a fantastic location for the venue I was attending
Good property needs updating.
The bar shuts at 9 pm and the kitchen earlier
Price quality of bedding towels tea coffee facilities comfy bed quiet peaceful very enjoyable
All was good
Room was clean
Room was a bit noisy
Breakfast was lovely and freshly cooked. Location at the time was not good as there was roadworks directly outside which made it difficult to get in and out of the car park.
We had the room with the copper bath which was a decent size but could do with updating and a lick of paint. Lighting in the dressing area was poor and very dark for ladies doing their hair and makeup!
The cooked breakfast, served on unheated stoneware - was cold. On the first morning the poached egg was not properly cooked. The white was runny.
The plates could have been heated. Not wanting a grind home in the dark, I opted to stay a second night: Too my surprise I was charged £10 more than for the first night.
The room was spacious and inviting though basic .decor was lovely. The food was excellent and worthy of the price. I never had breakfast so cannot comment. A lovely cosy inn worthy of a visit
Small details missing like paper hankies and instant coffee , only. Percolate available but nothing to complain about really..
Every single staff member was super friendly and helpful. Food at both dinner and breakfast was delicious. Room was comfortable and clean. Would stay again without question.
A little too warm in room.
Friendly from the we arrives to when we left. Gill and her team were fantasic from start to finsh. Would definitely stay again.
First time staying here. Had 3 rooms booked all very clean very quiet and very comfortable and breakfast was included which was a bonus
Nothing
Clean, food was nice
Location a very busy road. No sleep all night
Nice place.
Staff have still not sent me a receipt for my stay.
The breakfast is really good and the staff ere friendly.
The rooms are run down. There was an awful smell of sewage coming from our bathroom and tiny dead flies in the bath tub. We arrived after all the staff had left for the night, but still before the 10pm check in window closed, and the key was waiting for us in the door, so we just went to sleep but the smell was 10 times worse by the morning. I told them on check out and it seemed as if it was old news to them.
Everything was very very good
Nothing
The bed was comfortable and bathroom facilities were good
We booked this property nearly a year in advance I phoned two nights before to reserve a table to eat and drink on the day after we attended the racing only to be told that there would be no facilities as the eating and dining would be closed.when we arrived the place was in darkness there was a note on the outside door with our name on it letting us know where to find the key to the room and not to lock main door which I felt uncomfortable with as it remained unlocked all night .The room was adequate and comfortable and they opened for breakfast next day which was nice but my main point there was no indication that this place would have been closed with no eating or drinking facilities on the 1st on booking .com .or the sun inn.we had to try and find somewhere to eat which was a half hour walk to get there and then the same back again . If I had not called to book a table for dinner we would have been none the wiser I felt really disappointed I feel either the owners should make people aware of this or yourselves so we could have prepared for this or chosen a different place which was open. I would not have booked this place I know it was a bank holiday in Scotland due to new year . I see it’s being advertised for next year so people looking for a nice overnight stay with food and drink on New Year’s Day should avoid here be aware that you only have the use of the room I would not book again due to this .
The one breakfast we had was excellent. Evening meal was excellent on Christmas eve.
On Boxing day no breakfast was offered even though I had received several emails saying breakfast was included. The staff were having the day off which they deserved but I would've expected a Continental breakfast or similar could've been provided. We ended up buying cereal and milk from a corner shop.
Rooms and the facilities are good
Restaurant closes at 8pm and the bar closes at 9pm
We have had a lovely stay at the sun, food was excellent and the staff were friendly and very helpful.Although on the main road road noise was ok and good links for the bus service. many thanks to all the staff and have a lovely xmas
Great pub and lovely food
Drains smell from room 3 in bathroom but otherwise lovely room and comfortable
Great staff, great food ,it was only xmas menu it pricey
room was great comfy bed slept well tv was awfull, unresponsive one channel and am good with tech. overall wud stay again.
Cosy and welcoming place. Clean and fresh. Breakfast was really good.
From room number one, you can hear anyone coming up the stairs right through the doors and this can be quite annoying at times
Cosy comfortable and very welcoming. The building was lovely and the staff even more so. Made our overnight stay for friends party even better thank you
Nothing to dislike a lovely place to stay
had a great stay, excellent food and great customer service, A special mention to Angela who was very helpfully nothing was too much bother.
I was staying to attend a wedding in the area. Location was good. Bed was comfy. Room clean and tidy. Staff very friendly and breakfast the next day was great. Nice relaxed atmosphere in the bar area.

Very welcoming, comfortable stay. Lovely breakfast. 2nd time I've stayed here visiting family and will return again I'm sure.
Everything was good
Location for the family funeral the next day and we’d heard great things about the food hence the choice
It was very tired No food after 5pm - very outdated TV/SKY Bathroom door was warped and wouldn’t close Bedrooms around the bed and under inches of dust Poor tea and coffee offering in Room We booked our time slot for breakfast (8am) when we awoke from here was a notice on the door which was placed there late that the Inn was now closed until the following Wednesday so no breakfast for us ahead of an early family funeral
No WiFi in room
The hospitality was great with very friendly staff and good food. The breakfast was absolutely superb.
The property was looking a little tired.
Breakfast was exceptional, food was of excellent quality, hot and freshly made. The Benny stack and full Monty breakfast is definitely recommended
On a busy road so road noise a bit of an issue but can understand that building is older and may not be able to have better or any double glazing
Comfy bed
The place is looking 'tired'. Hole in door, worn carpet. Creaky floorboards and doors were annoying.
My second stay here and it was as pleasant as before. The breakfast is always fantastic.
On a major road, up from 5am as the HGVs driving past made the room shake. No reception, key was in the door. No answer to the 5 calls I made on my 250 mile journey ( Google maps and Google told me the hotel was closed) No restaurant for evening meal, breakfast (they did advise of this ahead of my arrival).
Vriendelijke ontvangst en lekker eten
the facilities
busy road
The food was amazing …. However sadly the room let things down . There was no kettle in our room despite there being a tray with cups , tea /coffee etc . When queried the staff apologised and said they try and find one ……..never happened . The plumbing work in the bathroom left a lot to be desired …… very poor grouting round the bath / shower door …… the shower was extremely loose and felt it would fall off the wall ….. tiles missing from behind the sink . Toilet roll attached to wall opposite the loo ……… you needed arms at least four foot long to reach it ! . Would recommend for eating , not staying .
Really lovely boutique hotel and gastro pub. The food was delicious and there were a lot of nice little touches like ground coffee and cafetière in the rooms. The staff were great.
The mattress was really firm and on the more uncomfortable side.
The staff were lovely and helpful
It badly needs a refurb. It’s grubby and a bit shabby. The hairdryer and iron in the room were 7 months overdue an electrical inspection. The food on offer was good, but don’t be fooled by the website menu. The actual menu was completely different with far fewer choices. The hotel boasts itself as an award winning restaurant, but the most recent award on show was from 2015 - ten years ago.
Great location, good parking and great breakfast
Too near main road and a bit noisy
Not much to like. Room.was disgusting and stunk of sewer. Carpet was gross and extremely discolored, headboard badly worn, and damaged. Sink was cracked, missing floor tiles in bathroom, bathroom.floor sticky. Hallways gross and stink. Very very run down.
We never stayed the night, but no one was there to tell as all the staff left after we checked in. Was assured in the morning that they would authorize a refund through booking.com but now they won't despite the:manager" agreeing that the room.was stinky and gross. I held.off doing a review as all I wan6ed was a refund buy non forthcoming.
Kaum geschlafen.
Food was amazing
Room dirty desperately in need of renovation Mattress stained 🤢
Easy to find off the A7/A68 from Newcastle, lovely little pub, didnt eat at night as had tickets for the military tattoo but the breakfast was really tasty and beds comfy.Great location for transport/trains to Edinburgh 5mins by car and there is a bus you can get aswell.
Door didn't shut/fit on bathroom which seemed an easy fix by someone bit being a couple wasn't really a issue
Beautiful historic building. We booked the suite with the roof terrace for the night after our home wedding. The hot tub needed to be on a lower temperature I think as we could not sit for longer than 5 minutes. The flooring in the room is pretty worn but tbh we would 100% hire this suite again. The breakfast in the morning was amazing
No special touch for this being a hooking for the night of our home wedding.
The hotel room was very clean and comfy and what i considered to be a massive bargain considering the price of hotels in edinburgh for the same night. The service was fantastic but breakfast was phenomenal to service and to food itself. I will be retur ing for my next trip to edinburgh. £120 for the night with breakfast for 2 people with two lattes and two teas. Phenomenal!!!
Breakfast was beautifully presented by superb staff.
Wish we had stayed longer
Comfortable room and excellent service
I really enjoyed my stay at the sun inn, it was comfortable and a good breakfast, only a 10 minute drive to the park and ride into Edinburgh which is what I did each day.
Can’t fault it, for the money paid, I was more than happy with my stay.
