Good choice of options and mode of service
Some items were deep fried
The room was very comfortable and quiet, the lady who checked me in was very friendly. The location right in the middle of Richmond was great
Such a beautiful, warm welcoming when I arrived. Every single staff member right down to the breakfast chef were incredible. I stayed the night to go watch my sons army parade and he has his passing parade in November, I will 100% book with you again, absolutely amazing

We stayed here whilst doing the coast to coast walk and it was a great stay. Great atmosphere, lovely comfy bed, nice and plentiful supplies of tea & coffee in the room. Lovely evening meal & great breakfast.
It was clean
Booked in double ensuite room to be given room with separate bathroom along the corridor. Just not acceptable. Only single room with ensuite available so had to take it. Most uncomfortable very warm and very uncomfortable bed
breakfast,room,shower and staff.
If i was going to be picky maybe a proper chair in the room.
Location very good
Room tatty curtain rail hanging off on right side shower tray too high in breach of regulations no milk in room for coffee No sky tv No football shown in bar
Good bathroom
Nothing
The location was central. The beds and pillows were very comfortable. Breakfast was ok but not a great choice of cereals. No yoghurt or fruit.
Very noisy creaky floors, could here noise from all around and above. Obviously this is partly due to it being a very old building. No mirror in the bedroom, had to dry hair using tv screen as a mirror. A second adjustable shower head would've come in handy when not wanting to wash hair when having a shower No milk on the hospitality tray.
Lovely room and staff very friendly. Great malbec.
Such a shame the food really let this stay down for us. We payed £235 for one night which included breakfast. We had our evening meal here too which was terrible and we were put off by the waitress stating the chef wasn't well but still cooking. I was already quite ill myself at the time so abit off putting. The breakfast was awful. Neither of us ate any of it and left and sourced food around the corner. Such a shame.
Excellent location, dog friendly and very welcoming. Excellent value for money. On site parking. Plenty of quality tea/ coffee and biscuits in the room.
We were in a family room with a double and 2 singles. We would have preferred a king-size personally.
Great location directly in the main centre of Richmond and staff was very friendly.
This is feedback for room 12: not an ensuite bathroom which I wish would be made clearer in the room category title, not just the description. However, the worst thing was that both room and bathroom faced the kitchen vents. There was lingering food smell in both rooms during the entire stay and the vents ran from 7AM-11PM at a noise level which was hard to ignore when having the windows open. The bathroom would need a little TLC and wifi in the room would have been great. If I would book again, I would make sure to not stay in room 12.
The location was great for what we wanted
Staff weren’t very friendly, cobwebs hanging from the lights. Hardly no toilet paper in the bathroom, shower head wouldn’t stay on the stand so had to hold it to have a shower, the milk in the room was off, kettle was covered in lime scale breakfast wasn’t a very good standard, no teaspoons,
I liked the location and I really liked pub itself. Lovely atmosphere. Very friendly and helpful staff.
In our opinion breakfast was not great and not worth £15 per person. Also room was too expensive considering it was small, bathroom floor was full of hair, WiFi did not work and smart tv was not connected to the Internet so we could not watch what we wanted.
Warm welcome and room had been cooled down before our arrival in the heatwave. Great Shower and bathroom. Bar staff efficient and friendly. Evening meal was excellent.
The "Beer Garden" (Car Park) is a work-in-progress. Was dirty and uncleared even next day. Breakfast staff didn't give the impression that enjoyed there job. But the breakfast was OK.
Great pub & location, staff very friendly, food tasty & good price.
Our double bed (room 1) had a deformed base which made it a bit uncomfortable & causes poorer sleep, this was reported in the morning so hopefully it has been repaired / replaced 🙏
Staff were very good room was clean and comfortable
Breakfast was cold no butter available Extractors must be connected from room 15 strong smell from toilet area
Good location with parking, and a nicely decorated room. Pleasant dinner in the bar.
Unfortunately there was a terrible smell of drains in the room & bathroom, seemed to get worse when the adjoining bathroom was being used. Had to leave the extractor fan on all the time, but didn't help much. Breakfast was rather a 'can't be bothered' affair, not great.
Small but cosy room, lovely comfortable bed. Everything in room you need
Unfortunately, the accommodation itself did not reflect the £238 price we paid. Parking was difficult on arrival because several cars had been parked over the lines and were taking up more than one space. The room was very small and we hadn’t realised that the bathroom was completely separate from the bedroom. We had to leave the room and cross the landing to use it. The bathroom itself felt quite scruffy and there was no shower, only a bath. No robe was provided either, so after bathing I had to wrap myself in a towel to cross the landing back to the bedroom rather than getting fully dressed in the bathroom. The full-length mirror was positioned far too low on the wall to actually use while standing — I had to sit on the floor to see myself properly. Our room was also at the back, where it was noisy and the view was very poor. Breakfast was advertised from 8am, but when we arrived we had to knock on the breakfast-room door for someone to open it. Unfortunately the breakfast itself was disappointing: a tiny tomato, a hard egg, hard streaky bacon and butter that was rock solid and impossible to spread on the toast. The pub downstairs was another disappointment. There was no music and very little atmosphere. I asked a member of staff about putting some music on and he said he thought it was already playing, despite there being none, and remained sitting on his phone. Overall, at £238 for the night, we felt the accommodation was significantly overpriced. In our opinion, it was closer to a £140-a-night experience. The location is very good, but unfortunately the room, bathroom facilities, breakfast and general atmosphere did not justify the price.
It wasn't highlighted enough that we had a separate bathroom. We had to unlock our door and walk across the landing to the bathroom.
Friendly staff, quirky room, good breakfast
Shower temperature difficult to control
Richmond is a great town. The Black Lion is very well located just off the market square. It's a nice pub with a good vibe and interesting history. Our room was on the top floor and the stairs got narrower as we went so it was really difficult to get a large suitcase up last stair. Staff were welcoming
Breakfast staff were a bit slow
Very clean, very comfortable bedroom and the shower was a nice size and easy to use, and it was right on the shops and town centre, so we didn’t need to travel anywhere for shopping or drinking and eating.
Sunday dinner was disappointing with burnt puddings and very fatty beef, but that was absolutely the only disappointment about the whole weekend.
Room at front of hotel soft bed Always likes where dogs are welcome .
The place needs a bit of T L C.
Lovely hotel and staff all very nice
The location
Dirty underwear in one of the drawers. Mattress topper kept slipping off the bed during the night.
We really like the pub, and have visited many times in the past. It's comfortable, good beers and nice food. The younger staff are friendly and helpful. it's a pity then that staying here for the first time was disappointing. We're good travellers, and not easily bothered by details , but we were disappointed and a bit sorry we'd booked to stay, as we have good memories of the Black Lion as a pub. The location is good, near the market square but quiet. The room itself was comfortable.
What a shame - could be so lovely but a bit neglectful service. From the beginning, communication was poor. I messaged several times to check on the booking before finally getting a reply. No-one answers the phone . When we arrived we went to the bar, to the senior staff who ignored us. When the bar staff asked us if we wanted something, we explained we were checking in. Only then the senior staff member showed interest. The room wasn't cleaned properly, hairs in the shower which we had to remove. We twice left the please service room notice on the door, the first time it was cleaned, the second time not at all. We had to go downstairs carrying bedsheets to find staff. The wifi didn't work at all in the room. Finally, the breakfast was not great .although we ordered it the first morning at 7.30am it was lukewarm and we had to send it back. Dry small piece of bacon, hard eggs. I can't say it was good value compared to what's available in town. Regretfully I'm not sure I'd recommend staying here.
Very close to the town
The price I think it should of been cheaper
Perfect location
Very comfortable and quiet
Very friendly hotel. Central location. The room was very clean and well decorated. All rooms are dog friendly.
Nothing
The staff were very helpful & pleasant. The bedroom and bathroom were very clean and tidy.
Nothing. It was an old building but everything was well presented. The only downside was the car park but there was a 24hr car park near.
Quaint, in keeping with the town itself.
2 sets of stairs, one without a handrail . Lack of parking.
Good location
Staff member very dismissive and rude upon arrival. Barely spoke or looked up from what she was doing and was unhelpful regarding parking arrangements. We arrived too early for check in and were told so rather abruptly. No offer to keep luggage until check in became available
Great location

Very good evening meal.
The bedroom was hot despite the cooling fan. The bed had a slope which made it more difficult.
Well run old coaching house style pub/hotel. Near main market square, good breakfast, very friendly staff.
Possibly a tad over priced for a single traveller.
Location and parking
The room was comfortable, with a modern bathroom containing a lovely range of hand, hair and body care products The room contained a kettle, tea, coffee and biscuits. Breakfast was lovely.
Lovely room
Dinner was awful, nicely cooked but the waitress was slow to bring it so that it was cold when it arrived. She then took it away to microwave it which ruined the fish. Breakfast was also poorly presented and hot water for tea was tepid. Overall poor communication between chef and servers, we think. Overall we felt that no one cared, no effort made to look after us or compensate when things were clearly not right. These are small issues which could easily be rectified with a little direction from a good manager.
Amazing place, great shower, comfy bed, perfect location and exceptional food
Nothing
Central location. Car park full so we stayed in long stay five minutes away. Clean and modern
Nothing.Just be aware some rooms are high up and lots of stairs so not suitable for everyone
Terrific location and lovely friendly helpful staff. Nice breakfast.
Some bits of the accommodation were a bit tired
Fantastic location, great pub, food & room for our overnight stay in Richmond
Everything was fantastic
It's nice and central
Didn't enjoy breakfast this time. Because theve put tables out taken parking spaces and not many to start with
Great location, and staff, food was good.
Perfect location with parking. Good food and friendly staff.
Upon arrival, we were asked to pay when booking.com had already taken payment prior to arrival. Just as well, we got proof of payment but staff were confused why booking.com had done this so assume not the normal process.
Location, ambience and staff professionalism
Breakfast only rated as adequate
Great location with parking. Breakfast was good. Room was very big and bathroom was well decorated.
Our room was at the top and the stairs in last part up were very steep but I accept it’s a very old quirky building. Whilst the bathroom was lovely it lacked a shower mat and as the shower was over the bath it was not a very safe experience as there was nothing to hold onto.
The staff were very helpful. The room was comfortable. The food was nice and had real ale on tap. the location was excellent. Onsite parking was available. Overall a good place to stay.
The only gripes I have is that there was no shelving in the bathroom on which to place our toiletries and the backlit mirror did not work making shaving difficult. Minor stuff but would make a good room an excellent one.
Bedroom adequate
Breakfast- no orange juice !! Not quality sausage and bacon
The staff are so friendly, and the location is very convenient.

location, staff, VfM
Minor Point, but no shampoo in the bottle
Great location
The toilet seat was too small for the toilet The room was too hot and dark
Nothing
The room, bed, decor
Location
The flights of stairs
Good location.
Our ensuite bathroom was across the corridor No shower curtain. Poor facilities in the bathroom.
Nice property and lovely staff
Parking is an issue,if you are very tall you won’t fit in the showers in the twin rooms.Im 5ft 4 and almost touched the roof
Ideal location and lovely establishment.

Great location. Very good staff they were very helpful. Food was great both evening and breakfast. Lovely comfortable bed.
Room was quite dark but not too much of an issue
Great staff
Parking is an issue
Location
Wasn't clean
Good location, really helpful and nice staff
The room was very hot, the bathroom smelled a bit strange (maybe the drains) but was clean. The room was right at the top and for obvious reasons the window didn’t open properly.
The staff were super friendly. High standard of cleaning.
Could do with a permanent comfy chair in room 3 to watch the TV.
Everything was great - we stayed here a few months ago and whilst it was much busier this time the service and all facilities remained excellent.
Nothing
The welcoming staff the atmosphere the food was delicious and our room was very comfortable
Location
Bedroom outlook on to noisy kitchen fans. Only one bedside lamp and no chair in room. Decoration needs refresh. Bathroom across corridor poorly decorated and basically appointed. No shower. Very uninviting. Breakfast cereal would be improved by fresh fruit. Bread option limited. Coffee poor.
Central location with private parking.
Booked a table for evening meal. Waited thirty five minuets after ordering and asked how Long the meal would be (sausage and mash for one) was told it would be another twenty five mins due to the fact the Cooke was on his own! Why wasn’t I told it could be an hours wait for service when I was seated. The pub was quiet as-well so cancelled meal and dined elsewhere. Breakfast was great!
Room very comfortable, bed and pillows. Great size and quality towels. Nice cool, room despite the hot weather. Quiet and peaceful. Great location and parking. Staff very friendly. Lovely market town, with nice shops, cafe and great italian restaurant and hotels.
Very steep stairs to room. Very hot water(no warning). Difficult access into bath/shower, no handrails. Missed room service one day.
Good location
The bathroom was awful. There is no shower - just a shower head in the bathtub. The tub itself is tiny - to get my head underwater i had to fill the bath to the brim and stick my legs in the air. When I sat up the bath is so small all the water sloshed out and drowned the room. The whole bathroom stank of the kitchen - the ventilation fan is obviously by the window. For £115 a night this room was wildly overpriced.
Room was clean and ready for us, efficient check in and out, was private and not noisy at all, comfortable stay, nice bathroom and shower. Staff were responsive, nice breakfast included.
Advertised free parking but didn’t mention the car park is small and tight, with limited spaces. Didn’t accommodate all of our guests. Shortages with staff meant that little details were missing such as no toilet roll in the bedroom (had to request this). The bed wasn’t the most comfortable but the heat and pregnancy didn’t help so can’t fully knock the hotel for that. They did leave a fan in the room but was very small and not very useful, air con or better fans would be great especially with only one small window that let a lot of sunlight in. They also left water in the room but would be great if this was cold for the heat wave. The tv was a smart tv but no internet connection on it. The bed was being held up on one side by a book so was worrying it was going to break.
charming, historic, good food and Bar
Cracking location
All good no issues
So welcoming and friendly ! beautiful decorated rooms. We had booked 3 rooms for our trip and every room was perfect for our needs. All Comfortable beds , great pub underneath .We didnt eat there personally but we saw the food and it looked really good. Would definitely stay there again
Nothing to dislike at all.
The hotel central to town, it is old building full of character.Had bar meal in bar which was nice and Elle waitress was very attentive
Lots of stairs, could have done with hand rail over bath as it was large and big step down from bath.
Spacious, comfortable room with comfortable beds. Clean, recently redecorated. Pleasant, welcoming staff, excellent breakfast
Room access via four flights of stairs one without hand rails and a sharp turn at the end of the top flight with very narrow treads that challenged safety. Room uncomfortably hot, due to the weather being unusually hot, but the ventilation was restricted to small windows and a very small skylight. I was not aware the hotel had rooms so high or I would have requested a lower room. My wife and I are in our late eighties and found accessing the room, particularly when carrying cases, very difficult. The bathroom had a shower over the bath. No grab rail, No non-slip mat. Water pressure on the shower so high that it was difficult preventing it spraying over the whole room. The high pressure also made it difficult to set a suitable temperature. Just a micro movement of a tape would swing the temperature from cool to scalding. This facility was so difficult that on the second morning we abandoned the shower knowing we had a walk-in shower at our next stop. This was all disappointing as we had a very pleasant stay in a different room at the hotel on a previous visit
Good location. Decent sized room. Clean & tidy.
Shower was very fierce. Relatively small food portions, and we don’t eat big portions.
The location is excellent. Richmond is lovely and fortunately we have a positive attitude as The Black Lion was possibly the worst place we have ever stayed
The toilet seat in the room was broken as was the door handle. The room was not clean or well kept. They forgot to refresh our room on the 2nd day. The evening meal took nearly an hour before it arrived and was then barely edible. Staff were absent and we waited over 10 minutes just to get a drink. One member of staff said 'It's a nightmare' when he was serving us. No apology or refund offered. The breakfasts are awful with just bread and cereal their 'continental breakfast' and when the cook finally came out of the kitchen the first day after 10 minutes of waiting, the food he cooked was swimming in oil. On the second day we went down and the breakfast room was still locked half an hour after breakfast was supposed to have started. We asked for a bacon sandwich and were given 2 slices of defrosted bread, greasy bacon and some butter cubes and were expected to make it ourselves. The staff (apart from a manager) were not visible and she was obviously under significant pressure. Given how much we paid we feel very let down by the hotel indeed and cannot recommend them at all. We chose it because of its location and its rating on Booking.com so also feel let down by booking.com and will now have to really consider whether to use/rely on the website for future stays.
The hotel was right in the centre with ample parking spaces. Beds were super comfortable, best I’ve slept in when away.
Slightly hard to locate at first as off main square down a no through traffic zone. Parking was at the back accessed a different way. Also short of staff on 2nd morning at breakfast so kept running out of items I.e. bread, knives, spoons. Would not put me off staying again though.
Nice pub in the centre of Richmond with pleasant staff
Room was OK but couldn't open windows properly and it was quite warm
Lovely old building well situated for town. Comfortable. Helpful staff
No horizontal surface in bathroom. Sponge bag and hair brush had to go on floor! Confusion over not being offered breakfast for 2nd day, but staff did say they'd do us one specially.
Good food, amazing real ale, helpful, friendly staff and great value!
Great location. Lovely comfortable room. Found all staff to be friendly and efficient.
Location, VFM
Cooked Breakfast was very poor - Hash Browns and Sausages cremated, I also asked if I could have scrambled or poached egg v fried, and was told this is not possible, as the table next to me was served poached eggs on toast.
Great location Very clean Nice decor - newly updated Very comfortable bed with good mattress and nice pillows
Food in pub was very standard
Friendly staff. Found a space for my car as the small car park was full. Lovely old inn. Real atmosphere. Nicest pub in town.
Smells strobgly of meat in the bar. Not great if you're a vegan but since most people are hair to abuse and exploit animals, I'm sure nobody else will mind.
Friendly staff and good food
Nothing
It was comfortable. Breakfast was nice
It was ok
Good central location. Own parking. Good value evening meals. Comfortable room.
Nothing to dislike
Location , free parking, comfortable beds. Chosen because it offers twin beds, unlike many hotels.
Ideally, we would have liked fruit and yogurt offered for breakfast, but the cooked option was nicely done. Shower cap would be welcome to allow for fixed shower head
Delicious, hot breakfast served with a smile,we didn't have dinner at the hotel but would do if we stay here again, comprehensive menu and reasonably priced. The en-suites tastefully decorated. Overall we had a lovely stay at this hotel and would recommend as good value for money
There was nothing we didn't like, this is a very old building so the floor surfaces could be a little uneven, but there's not a lot you could do about that and this is not a critisism, only to be expected for the age of the hotel
It was located in a nice area
I was in a room in the rear of ghe hotel which was above the kitchen, there was a smell of food & grease coming in through the window. The breakfast wasn’t great
Central
Only one mirror in room, food not the best
Great location for our stopover.
Staff working hard but service slow at dinner-felt like they need more people on duty
It is clean but very expensive for what you get. Up in the eves facing the road so noisy. Staff rushed off their feet and harassed.
The price
Clean, comfy, tea facilities with biscuits, free parking.
Breakfast was a farcical, ran out of muffins, burnt sausages but were replaced, kitchen guys took too long bringing out food & priced at 15.95 each...way too steep
Parking available Friendly staff Exceptionally clean room and bathroom Location
I can't fault it
