All we can say is wow! What an absolutely phenomenal time we had at Gen Hakone Gora. Of our two weeks in Japan, this was the absolute highlight. We were only there for two nights and immediately knew that we should have scheduled a few more nights. It was exactly what we needed - peaceful, relaxing, removed from the busyness of the world. It was absolutely lovely. We had a beautiful view of the mountains from our room. The onsen was extremely clean and well-taken care of. The attention to detail in decor was remarkable. We also loved the tea, snacks and wine that were available for guests in the lobby. And, of course, having kaiseki in our room was an absolute highlight. What a special cultural experience. Rai Sonu was the absolute best! She was so so kind and attentive. We were thankful she was there for each and every meal. We really felt like family by the end of our two days. Thank you again, Rai! For anyone considering staying, it's a must. I am already planning my trip back to Japan, solely to come back to Hakone and I'll be staying at Gen Hakone Gora when I do :) thanks again
N/A - we loved everything. My mom does not eat fish, so we weren't sure how the kaiseki was going to go but they were extremely accommodative and she ended up loving her meals.
I just returned from a 12 day trip to Japan. My adult daughter and I were absolutely thrilled with every aspect of our trip, but Gen Hakone Gora was the one disappointment. While the room itself and its comfortable spaces were lovely, we both agreed the food, service and overall experience was incredibly disappointing. Not only was the food horrible, but the hotel is set up in a way that forces you to stay in your rooms when you're not out and about. There's very little positive to say, although we did enjoy the proximity to Gora and appreciated the car service to and from the train station.
The food was awful and we felt trapped in our room! Meals are only served in your room and it seemed like it was all prepared way in advance so not fresh. Morning breakfasts, were all served "cold" including the coffee and my American eggs. Both my daughter and I had nausea after the first night, and the fish was definitely not fresh. Prior to this stay, we had amazing experiences in every other Ryokan which made this even more disappointing. The staff were all sweet but spoke very little English and while we appreciated their effort, it was hard to communicate on details and the attempts we made (all food related) did not result in any improvements. Thrice disappointed given other reviews and the cost -- absolutely not worth what we paid and wish I could get my money back!

The layout and design of the room was a mix of traditional Japanese and modern Western architecture. The rooftop terrace with the private Onsen overlooking the valley was the spectacular highlight. The in-room breakfast and dining was spectacular (the kitchen has one Michelin Star).
The lobby / hallways and exterior of the hotel looked slightly dated but were very well maintained. The location is right on top of the hillside, therefore tougher to reach by foot, transport is in the quiet Gora rather difficult to get, the hotel shuttle that operates till 9pm aside.
Nice Japanese minimalist modern design room, super clean and neat, lighting very welcome
Almost nothing, juts hope it may have some storage space that can hanging clothes, put luggages inside
Friendly service. Fabulous room with hot spring bath and stunning valley view. Excellent public Onsen facilities. Superb dinner and breakfast. Private shuttle service to local attractions, such as the Pola Museum and Hakone ropeway.
We stayed one night for our honeymoon in May 2026. It was our first trip to Japan and Gen Hakone Gora. After 4 days in Tokyo, it was a much needed reset and change of pace. The hotel and facilities are intimate, beautiful and extremely comfortable. It was one of the best hotels we have stayed in and we liked the fact that it was boutique style and smaller. The staff is exceptional. The private and public Onsen are first class and were thoughtfully designed and maintained. We were upgraded to the SEN suite because it was our honeymoon. Our personal concierge and staff member Mai was incredibly sweet, thoughtful and enjoyable to be around. She is absolutely amazing and we talk about her all the time even after our trip. I hope you see this Mai and I hope hotel management shows her this review and recognizes that she made our stay at the hotel the best night ever. Mai deserves a ton of recognition. We had massages in the room which were great. The traditional kaiseki meal will be challenging for foreigners with limited courage and who are picky eaters with specific tastes. I enjoyed the different dishes and flavours because it was a very different experience but if you are more “meat and potatoes” you can opt for a beef course which my wife thoroughly enjoyed - point being, you will be satisfied regardless of your preferences. I hope we have the chance to stay at Gen Hakone Gora again soon. - Michael and Caitlyn.
Nothing bad to say. We are well-travelled and thought it was excellent. I would ignore any negative reviews and book this hotel with complete confidence. It is romantic and an amazing experience.
The hotel was very beautiful and the rooms were clean, spacious, modern, and beautiful. Everything about the hotel and room felt luxurious and well thought out.
Can't think of anything :-)
Unfortunately we didn’t particularly care for the traditional Japanese food. Although it had a beautiful presentation it was not to our liking. We understand this was a traditional Japanese experience but we did not care for what we ate. The service and the facilities were top notch.
This hotel is unbelievable, very well appointed rooms, lovely staff, great meals, excellent views, truly wonderful experience. Best ryokan style hotel of our trip by far. We particularly loved the small touches - the oragami on the take, the binoculars to look at the mountain, the speaker to set our vibe, the yoga mats, and the very nice skincare products for the morning routine with a view. The in-suite onsen was wonderful, the shower had a fantastic view. The meals were very good, and served with care in-room by the lovely staff. A very special experience.
Nothing
Beautiful room, extremely well appointed. Food incredible. Staff all lovely
Nothing
Room, peace and serenity of the location.
Besides the rooms, property is pretty outdated.
The property itself is beautiful! It’s nestled up in the mountains with an amazing view. The lobby is beautiful, clean and very aesthetic. The overall vibe is so calm
Nothing comes to mind that we didn’t like. When we arrived at the train station we called the shuttle service to pick us up. They were very accommodating with pick up and drop off. You can’t really walk to the property though. It is a pretty steep walk
Incredible stay at Gen Hakone, everything was perfect from the moment we arrived. The private onsen with incredible sunrise views was a highlight. The food is really great and a generous amount!
Gen Hakone Gora is an unreal experience. If I had a chance to live her with all its beautiful views, amazing meals, and fantastic hospitality, I would do it in a heartbeat. I will forever advocate friends and family to stay here when the opportunity arises. The cleanliness, pristine property and rooms, and the calm environment was a cleanse of the soul unlike any other.
Couldn’t say a bad thing about the experience.
We absolutely loved the venue. The staff was amazing and the room had a gorgeous view.
I wish when they asked for dietary allergies we could have seen the full menu to be able to tweak a little more based on our food preferences. It was still a great experience!
This place is lovely. The view is amazing!! The room we had was spacious and very well appointed. The food exceeded expectations and was plentiful and delicious. The hotel is very well located to see the many attractions of the area - very close to the bus station and the hotel has a shuttle bus to take you to the sites that are close by. The staff are welcoming and couldn't be more helpful and eager to please.
Location is great. Open air museum is just 5 minutes by taxi or hotel car.
Dinner was not the best. But you can reserve a nearby Italien restaurant.
The most beautiful onsen I’ve ever stayed at. The staff was extremely nice and accommodating, rooms were top quality, view was unbeatable, and the service was the best I’ve ever received.
It is amazing. The staff is great
Just perfect
Sehe schönes Ryokan und großartige Bedienung im Zimmer !
Alles gut !
Stunning location and room. We had such a relaxing two night stay. The staff are so attentive and took such good care of us. Each evening we were wowed by the food. Thanks for such a memorable stay!

Very cozy

Spacious room
There are many many things wrong with this hotel, and if you are reading this TRUST ME, don't come here. TLDR: Very sloppy planning, bad food, old and dated building, heavy mold in the bathroom, and MORE. First of all we had one of the more expensive suites (SEN suite) which was around €1250 per night. The elevator there felt old, used and unsafe (from the 80s), like I'm in the ghetto. All the halls stink of old fish, because they serve the food within the halls. Days before we checked in, they asked about food we like and don't like. I clearly wrote that my girlfriend does not like fish, and does not eat it. We arrive, our first meal comes: Fish broth, eel, crab, sashimi, clams, and more. They said these aren't fish, just other sea food. Clearly, someone who does not like fish, does not like fishy food. How disrespectful? Second of all (I myself, like fish) the food was HORRIBLE. I am someone that can eat a 10 course culinary meal, aswell as a simple food, I am not a food snob and I am never picky with food. I like any and all food, but trust me when I say this felt like they found dog food in an old cabinet and threw something together. Every food was SLIMY JELLY VINEGARED WEIRDNESS, and the chefs SHOULD be fired. This was the worst culinary experience of my life, I cut the experience short at our fifth round and said we are full. It was THAT bad. I wouldn't let my dog eat it. How can even the Japanese reviews I've read say that this does not even come close to Japanese food, and that they feel sad for the westerners thinking it's their food. And then the food options: There is NO other food available, no restaurants in or around the hotel, no room service options for food. You just starve and go to sleep hungry.
Very large and modern room with a large living area and a gorgeous balcony and our own onsen. Lovely views too and so relaxing especially after being in Tokyo for a few days. The food was delicious.
I would have preferred a later breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was either 8am or 8.30 and dinner 6pm or 6.30pm.
Very nice
Tolle Aussicht.

Give this property a very wide berth! We have just stayed at Gen Hakone Gora for 3 nights and it was one of the most disappointing experiences a I have had. We had two rooms because I am travelling with my three adult children for my 50th Birthday. The price included half board (breakfast and dinner) so I was proactive and contacted the property 2 weeks before we were due to arrive to provide our dietary requirements. Two of my children are very adventurous eaters however my daughter and I are not. I sent them a list of items we did not eat and they came back to me asking if we ate eel, squid, octopus, crab and sea urchins, I said we did not. The first night’s dinner included all of the above items that we had confirmed that we did not eat. My daughter and I ended up walking to the local store for some dinner. That night I wrote another email confirming the foods we did eat. The second night we were also served food on our do not eat list! Given that we paid $10,000 AUD for three nights accomodation I would when expected them to accommodate our dietary requirements. The menu was very very exotic and not suitable to most palates. The Western breakfast consisted of cold toast, soggy croissants, and cold eggs and salad. The rooms were very bright and made it difficult to sleep at night as the sun rose very early and the air conditioning was insufficient due to the hotel building being so old. The two single beds were uncomfortable and the pillows were hard and now a have a sore neck. This property is also far away from any shops or amenities which meant catching many Ubers. The worse part of this experience was on departure when paying the account. I had a shiatsu massage one afternoon and my son had an oil massage. We were quotes 9000 YEN each and upon checkout they charged us 9000 YEN for the shiatsu and 18,700 YEN for the oil massage. I was quoted 9000 YEN for each massage and even signed paperwork to that effect.
The beds were uncomfortable, the manager was the rudest most unprofessional person in hospitality I have ever encountered.
We've traveled the world, and this is the best hotel I've ever stayed at. Truly a wonderful location and delightful staff.
Amazing! One of our favorite properties of all time
Great private onsen and very friendly and helpful staff
We loved the public and private onsen and had a relaxing stay. They provided all toiletries including quality face cleanser, shampoo/conditioner, even pyjamas. We enjoyed the complimentary bar with beer/wine and hand drip coffee. The Kaiseki dinner was a great experience and the staff were all very friendly and helpful.
The kaiseki dinner was almost entirely seafood.
Very clean and amazing place. If you like traditional japanese with a modern look. This is the place to stay
Beautiful Mountain View, friendly staff that caters every detail of your stay. Nice rooms, comfortable beds and the porch onsen is amazing.
Phenomenal room, absolutely gorgeous. So many amenities in the room as well as throughout the hotel. I loved the complimentary drink bar in the lobby and the ice cream outside the public onsen. Service throughout was excellent. Every member of the hotel staff exceeded expectations. Very accommodating of solo travelers. I've heard some ryokan are not so accommodating.
There are too many light switches to turn on and off. There needs to be master switch. I found the kaiseki meals to be hit and miss. Some courses were fantastic and some were a little bland for me.
Loved it. Beautiful.
Everything here is amazing if I could go 11/10 I would ,your own hot spring ,the room has everything you need ,I have never had accommodation with so many in room items at no extra cost, the staff are friendly and helpful, the food is traditional Japanese at a very high standard the Gora area is beautiful and peaceful and the train ride to Gora is incredible

スタッフの説明も分かりやすくホテルを1日中快適にゆっくり過ごせた。送り迎えもして頂きスムーズに観光、帰宅できた。
Such a lovely, peaceful experience with great, welcoming staff. If you're coming from a faraway place and want to build in time to adjust to the time change (like we did), I suggest you begin your Japan adventure here.
Everything was great. Great views. Luxurious room and amenities. Great food and service.
Nothing.
Truly fantastic place. The dinner was o ur of this world, so was the breakfast
Great hotel with great service and staff. Highly recommend.
Phenomenal! I highly recommend everyone staying here. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The view from our room and the food were amazing! An authentic Japanese/ryokan experience with modern amenities. We will definitely be coming back here.
I’m impressed by their staff! Dedicated team members! They take care of your requests like a second! The hotel is the cleanest room I ever seen in Hakone. It’s next to Hyatt Regency and Hakone 白檀!We will definitely come back to this hotel next time! The hotel also has the free shuttle and taking you to anywheres!
Superb hotel with wonderfully attentive staff, the facilities were exceptional & we couldn't have wished for more from the room.
The staff were very punctual and accommodating of time for our busy schedules. We had the Kaiseki dinner that was masterfully crafted and delivered. In the morning we need to leave early so we had the western breakfast and it was truly delicious.
We should have stayed longer. Do not rush your stay in Gen Hakone, give yourself time, 2-3 nights to breathe, relax, and unwind.
Service is awesome. Provide shuttle services to train station. They have great vegetarian for breakfast and dinner but need to let them know in advance. Provide drinks and snacks in the evening. Love the room and onsen.
The staff was friendly and willing to answer all my questions regarding the stay, the food, the bus service. Of course the view was excellent and the room was amazing!
Excellent all around
Beautiful and relaxing. Wonderful staff. We loved all of the details and small touches. We would definitely stay again.
Nothing!
Everything. It is perfect here. It’s calm and relaxing. The host staff may be the best we have interacted with. They are helpful and make great conversation.
Nothing. I can’t think of a single moment during our stay here that didn’t exceed our expectations.
Everyone was so nice and polite and truly felt like an extraordinary experience. Onsen was truly magical and charming. View of the mountains was breath taking. Recommend longer stays next time instead of one night. Will visit again. Until next time.
In room open air bath
The closest is too small mini bar is not functioning expect better food for this price
The room we stayed in (En) was so spacious, clean and peaceful. The facilities were top notch and the private onsen was amazing! The staff was especially kind and very helpful too. They went out of their way to make our stay memorable. Special thanks to Natsuki for looking after us during dinner and breakfast. She was so kind and showed great professionalism and efficiency tending to us. We learnt so much and hope to stay here again soon!
The service was above and beyond from the staff. The breakfast and dinner was unique and an enjoyable experience from the bedroom.
I had trouble with the Wi-Fi connection, it was very slow for me. I also wish the check in time could be earlier considering how much the hotel room costs per night.
Beautiful location. Well kept property. Tons of amenities and things within a reasonable distance. The staff were extremely helpful and pleasant, during meals and whenever we had any questions. The personal hot spring tub was perfect and the view was great. The room was large and had everything we needed. The food and drink options included were all delicious!
Not the easiest to get to.
Everything was awesome! The room was huge, the view was amazing, and the food was delicious. The staff was super friendly and helpful.
Massages
American breakfast option was disappointing. Very bland compared to the elaborate Japanese breakfast.
Excellent experience. The room, the food, the in room onsen, and the staff were truly remarkable.
Great hotel and view , specially for a special day with your couple
Not a good place if your planning to go to town
The room is massive—but you probably knew that based on the price tag. Modern, beautiful, Japanese design. Amenities in the room and at the lobby are great. Staff is so kind and helpful. The private outdoor onsen had quite the view. The bedding was very comfortable. There were so many different places to sit and relax. This one room had more to offer than one could do in a single day. Dinner and breakfast were excellent events. Yuki was a fantastic host and conversationalist for both my meals. The food was incredibly delicious, and it was fun taking my time to enjoy each course—and there were many courses.
The room overlooks other residential or hotel properties, so one can’t be too sure it’s okay to be without clothes outside. Though the private onsen was always full of water, it was impossible to make the bath cooler. Onsens are hot, but I would’ve liked to make some adjustments anyway. Although the experience was luxurious, I think it was a considerable amount of money to pay.
快適でした。
とっても満足できるお宿でした!
Room was amazing, view was lovely, dinner was fantastic and the massage was excellent.
Wish I’d booked another night.
