Reviewed Sep 7, 2026This motel is exactly what it says on the tin - a clean and convenient place to stay, with decent sized rooms for the price - but where they exceed all expectations is in the communication from the staff. I have stayed here a few times and the rooms are always pristine and quiet. More than once I have had to arrange a late check in, and the staff have had such clear, friendly and consistent communication that it has removed all stress and worry from the process. The Kensington Motel is my go-to whenever I have to stay in Whangarei, and it all comes down to the staff.

Reviewed Jul 11, 2026The motel was very old, about 70 years, with some limited newer fittings. Please note that the photos make it appears to be a moden building, which is not.
The bed mattresses are very old and unreasonably soft. it can sag by about 15cm! this is the softest i experienced in NZ. I don't have a back problem but still had sustantial back pain after get up from the bed in the morning. I did communicate to the motel but no one care. The bedroom don't have heater or heat pump and thus like freezing at night.

Pillows on te bed too hard but swapped them for too softer ones in the cupboard. I always travel with my own pillow anyway so it wasn’t a major issue. We couldn’t get the TV to work. Seems like the remote control. It’s been unhelpful but didn’t really matter. We just watched YouTube on the iPad. All good.

We stayed over Anzac weekend and everything was great as normal except for our neighbour's in and out all night crying outside and drama. Also the room next to us her car alarm kept going off thru the night and morning around 5 times woken from tht and took them ages to turn it off. Obviously not the motels fault just life but the worse stay we've had.
