¡El hotel es precioso! Es limpio, bien ubicado y el olor a tatami en el cuarto es increíble. Un lugar muy tradicional y bonito. Nos dieron un kimono a cada una y fueron muy amables. El desayuno y cena tradicionales eran auténticos. Además, el hotel pertenece a una familia muy agradable. Pudimos hablar con la mujer y con sus hijos. El hombre nos saludó en español jajaja Fue una experiencia increíble y nos encantó Gero. Esperamos volver. Saludos desde España :)

Antes de nada, hay que tener claro el tipo de alojamiento que es, para evitar posibles falsas expectativas. Se trata de un ryokan familiar con todo lo que conlleva: es un local con un ambiente totalmente japonés, por lo que hay que descalzarse al entrar, el suelo de la habitación es de tatami y se duerme en un futón delgado. Además, el ambiente es totalmente familiar: no hay un recepcionista que utiliza fórmulas prefabricadas y te conduzca asépticamente a tu habitación, sino que están allí todos los miembros de la familia, que te tratarán de forma acogedora y posiblemente puedas conversar con ellos. Mi estancia fue muy agradable, tanto por el establecimiento como por el personal. El establecimiento está limpio y ordenado, el espacio de la habitación era bastante amplio. La habitación tiene lavabo y retrete privados, pero no tiene ducha, ya que la higiene corporal se realiza en el recinto compartido del onsen. Se trata de un edificio que tiene varios años, pero, al estar bien cuidado, en mi opinión, es algo que suma en lugar de restar. Pero para mí, la mejor experiencia ha sido la relación con la familia que regenta el ryokan. Estudio japonés como hobby y puedo hablar un poquito. Uno de mis objetivos al viajar a Japón es intentar hablar en japonés, cosa a veces difícil, porque las personas de los hoteles y restaurantes suelen ir muy al grano y trabajan con prisa. En este caso, pude conversar, dentro de mi capacidad, con ellos. Aunque no sepas japonés, estarán encantados de hablar contigo, porque es una gente muy amable, simpática y cercana. Además, estuvieron dispuestos a ayudarnos en todo, no solamente en cuanto a la estancia en Gero, sino también para coger el autobús de Takayama a Shirakawago al día siguiente. También nos llevaron en coche a la estación de tren al día siguiente.

El onsen tiene dos bañeras: una interna y otra externa (rotenburo). Ambas son bastante pequeñas, y quizás sea esto lo que se puede achacar un poco al ryokan. No obstante, en Gero se puede comprar un pase para visitar 3 onsen de otros locales, cosa bastante recomendable. En nuestro caso, el onsen de Izumi-so fue el último del que disfrutamos. Es más pequeño que los otros en los que estuvimos, pero nos sirvió para complementar la experiencia.

We stayed for two nights as a couple. The rooms were spacious, the onsen beautiful and the staff very friendly. We tried the kaiseki dinner and it was an awesome experience…very traditional.

Les propriétaires et leur staffs sont tous très gentils, ils nous ont vraiment accueillis chaleureusement. Le ryokan est très bien placé et bien équipés, proche du centre et dans un endroit tranquille c'est donc super. A refaire !!! Merci encore pour votre accueil 😊

思ったよりも施設が古かった（歴史を感じる古さ）でした。豪華で、きれいなところを求めている方は少しがっかりされるかもしれません。

1) Ryokan has traditional atmosphere and open-air onsen. It was great to relax in such a peaceful place. 2) Dinners and breakfasts were a piece of art! Meals were served in a beautiful way and consisted of numerous Japanese dishes and delicious local fish and beef. 3) All staff members were helpful and friendly. Ryokan owner was really nice and easy-going, it was great to have some small talks with her.

The staff at the ryokan were all very friendly and welcoming. The woman's onsen was quite small but very relaxing and clean. The room was bright and clean. The breakfast and dinners were all great, and sourced with local ingredients. I wish that they gave us menus with our meals so we could know what we were eating exactly.

The ryokan itself was a little old.

The hostess is very hospital and helpful, we love the style of running her business. Guests feel comfortable and relax in the hotel. The Japanese food is so good and various plates provided everyday. We stayed for four days and enjoyed different meal per day. There is bus stop fifty meters from the hotel and is very convenient to Takayama and some places.

Beautiful inn and the food was wonderful. The Onsen was deeply healing and relaxing.

Room was clean and cozy..so bad that we didn’t try their onsen because arrived late ..their breakfast was yummy which was in Japanese style breakfast .

The family hosts were personable and warm without being clingy. The lobby feels like a welcoming living room. It was a real Japan experience that way. The small Onsen facilities for indoor and outdoor were a treat, the breakfast just lovely.

One night we experienced walking noise from the above room, at midnight, someone stomping a bit too hard, it would help to tell guests it is an old house and for rooms on upper level not to disturb guests below and to walk a bit quiet after say 10:30pm. But it was only one night and not a huge deal.

아주 친절하시고 좋습니다. 석식예약을 안했더니 근처에서 시켜먹을 수 있게 도와주십니다. 근데 그냥 가져온 거 먹었어요! 역까지 데려다 주시지만 가까워서 걸어가도 문제 없습니다. 욕탕이 약간 작은데 사람이 많지 않아 충분해요 거의 혼자 썼어요 다음에 또 갈 것 같아요!

In this structure we received a welcome and kindness that we have rarely experienced, the management is family-run and everyone is so helpful and kind. We had the dinner and breakfast formula and both were very good, with excellent quality products, we were very satisfied. In this Ryokan there is also an onsen with a very beautiful indoor and outdoor tub, perfect for relaxing. I recommend to everyone who wants to have an authentic experience at Gero Onsen. When we come to these areas again we will certainly return to this property where we felt at home and welcome. Thank you!!!!

The staff was really friendly and the onsen was amazing!!! We felt very welcomed and would love to return if given the chance.

The size of our room was really comfortable, the kaiseki dinner and breakfast was really sophisticated and tasty, we could also taste many kind of sake. The owner and the staff (also family members) was friendly. The water in the small onsen was very good for the body. After checkout we received an omiyage.

I believe, this ryokan has seen better days, and deserves a major renovation. There was a misunderstanding in the communication (before our arrival in a heavy rain), which should be quicker and based on internet data (concerning for ex. the train schedule). In the onsen area under the shower there was mold, so the cleaning should be also improved.

Our stay at the Izumi-so was very enjoyable. The family running it was incredibly friendly and helpful. It was a joy coming back after a long day of hiking and to be welcomed there. The traditional Japanese breakfast was delicious and freshly made every day. The Onsen is clean and especially the outdoor bath is quite beautiful. If I have the chance to come back to Gero Onsen I will again stay there.

Nous avons passé une nuit incroyable dans cette auberge des plus sublime ❤️ ce fut ma première expérience dans un ryokan possédant des onsens et je ne regrette absolument pas ce choix. L’ambiance, l’histoire de cette maison et de la famille qui gère l’auberge nous plonge dans les plus belles traditions et culture japonaise que nous aimons tant. (Profitez aussi du village, vraiment ! Gero Onsen regorge de nombreux ashiyu (bains de pied) dans tout le village et, si vous rechercher de la spiritualité, montez jusqu’au Temple d’Onsen-ji.) Les propriétaires de l’auberge sont absolument adorables, souriants et très accueillant. Un grand merci pour nous avoir permis de se loger dans votre demeure et de profiter de la tranquillité des lieux et des onsens 🙏 le temps d’une nuit.

Gorgeous location with spectacular views of the snow capped peaks. Very nice homey feeling. Loved the cats. Local town was sweet and fun to explore. The bedroom was very nice tatami room with fine details. The kitchen is good. We were able to cook with plenty kitchen ware.

What a pleasant stay it was! The staff was super nice and took the time to talk with me. The food was amazing (I'll think a long time about the Hida beef) and fortunately I was the only female customer at the time so I had both the interior and exterior onsen for myself (which saved me a lot of embarrassment as I was a first timer). I needed a break and breath of fresh air during my trip and Izumi-so made me feel right at home!

We were warmly welcomed and immediately felt at ease. The kaiseki dinner with local specialties was fantastic, and the breakfast with homemade miso was equally delightful — ごちそうさまでした. The onsen may be small, but it is beautifully designed and very relaxing. Throughout our stay, we truly felt like being at home.

A bit far from the train station but is within walking distance. Very traditional japanese stay that might not suit for some people. Might need some renovations.

The staff was really kind and helpful and the atmosphere of the place was very authentic. The onsen is clean and quiet, there is a massage chair available and the breakfast was delicious.

From the moment we were picked up by the owner of this family owned ryokan, we felt like we were home. Owners & their son were super friendly and helpful with everything. Other guests were smoking outside the hotel which made the smell very unpleasant, suggesting the hotel to restrict the area of smoking to reduce disturbance to non smoking guests,. Otherwise the hotel is excellent.

Very clean, very authentic, good food, nice staff. The food was really tasty and we got to try lots of new things. It is family run and the hosts were so amazingly welcoming. Recommend anytime! The Onsen was nice and clean. If it is not really busy, they will convert one of their Onsens into a private Onsen for you as a couple.

Onsen bath was really nice and the Ryokan allowed us to bathe together as a couple.

There was no dinner provided at the Ryokan so we didn't get the full experience we were looking for.

The hotel is really cozy and comfortable. The hostess is kind to us and offers us a drive to the station. The onsen is great and breakfast is great. We had a great time here and will come here again next time!

Very friendly host. Rooms are not fancy but comfortable enough with everything you need. Onsen is one of the best I’ve experienced. Also love the miso soup in the breakfast, very tasty.

Myuki-san and her family and staff were so helpful and accommodating. The onsen was lovely, witth both outdoor and indoor pools at different temperatures. Japanese breakfast was exceptional and beautifully presented, likewise full dinner.

Hot spring is not as big as we thought

Very friendly experience with the staff. They were very accomodating and willing to help with anything that we needed.

I felt really welcomed by the warmth that Hasegawa-san and her family provided ☺️. The ryokan retains its traditional charm & is completely made of wood, which is different from the surrounding ryokans. As a solo traveller, I initially felt worried about transportation but Hasegawa-san even greeted me at the bus stop (otherwise I would have missed the stop). I enjoyed chatting with the family too! Overall my stay was a really comforting and lovely experience!

I think it might be good to offer a solo traveller price on Booking.com!

The location.

The photographs we had seen on Booking.com of the Izumi So were starkly different to the place we experienced and we wondered if the photo's were at least 10 years old. There was no hot water at all in our room, just cold from the tap, and no bath/shower and it was explained that we would have to share a bathroom with other guests why using the Onsen which surprised us for the price we were paying. All in all, we would rate this a tired 2 star hotel in desperate need of a refurb and one which we found to be unrecognisable to the pictures we saw on the website.

Indoor and outdoor Onsen hot spring, very clean and good location

Hospitality of the staff, cozy room with a comfortable futon and tatami mats, family-owned atmosphere. The hot spring water in the onsen was fantastic, despite the bath being a bit small. Breakfast was fantastic!

Dinner preparation could be improved for the price paid - the grilled fish was a bit overcooked and dry, and the miso soup was too salty for my taste. Unfortunately there were other travelers who were quiite noisy and disruptive in the onsen.. I wish the rules were better enforced.

Izumi-so was my first Ryokan experience and couldn't recommend it more, the host was lovely, kind and accommodating. My room was very nice and the breakfast was delicious; the open air onsen was also lovely at night! Great location, about a 1-2 minute walk from the center of Gero. 10/10
