The restaurant was very nice , staff were friendly. There was a fan in the bedroom . Tea or coffee was available but no bottled water
The room I stayed in, the curtain was falling down . The water in the shower was so hot that I could not rinse my hair . Either too hot or very cold . Also rather dusty . When I asked about the bottled water . I was told by a rude short man that the tap water was good enough to drink . I was charged £5.20 for a glass bottle of spring water. Over twice what I have paid in Waitrose.
We had to pay extra for breakfast so declined .
Great bar and good location . Room was very dated with visible mold .
Bed, location
The cold water tap in the room didn't turn. Couldn't unplug the bathroom sink. No mat in the bath for the shower to prevent slipping. No breakfast menu. To view beforehand. When i rang reception about the bathroom plug no one offered to come up to solve the issue
A lovely location with very helpful staff. The room was great with plenty of room. Breakfast was first class.
Nothing
Location was great for the beach - a short walk, and the station, an even shorter walk. Staff were friendly and helpful, The room was just as you would expect for a low budget - I found it perfect for my one night stay. Just a generally nice atmosphere all round.
Just a minor thing but left when no staff around and unclear as to where to leave the key.
Friendly staff, great breakfast. Quiet during the night.
Parking can be tricky although there's parking across the road in front of the job centre.
Lovely staff, nice restaurant and clean room
The parking outside is just on the road, not specifically for the hotel guests. Only just managed to get a space.
Location. Spacious room and incredible staff
Out of date coffee in the room ! Didn't realise until after I drank it and im perfectly fine so all good
Very close to the train station, and shops, short walk to the waterfront. Great place to eat at. Rooms very big and spacious, mostly clean and the bed was the best nights sleep I’ve had in a while.
Honestly, the shower it was quite awkward to get the temperature just right, or it’s either ice cold or really hot.
I enjoyed the room, the bed was comfy. There were a lot of amenities. Staff were very pleasant.
My bathroom was separate from my room. No elevator, and had to use manual keys for the room which were fiddly.
Greet location and value for money
Nothing
Nice room, nice location. Stayed here many times.
This one night visit was twice as expensive as usual. Restaurant not open, bar not open.... despite their advert on Booking.com saying otherwise. Zero atmosphere... I never saw any other guests.
Pass
The room smelt of stale sweat, the beds were filthy with stains of god knows what on the mattress and bedding,, the room looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a while with thick dust and cobwebs everywhere, no mattress protection covers so we brought our own from Asda, we looked to go elsewhere in penarth but there was no vacancies in the area, we payed £145 for this place , what a very disappointing doss house.
We did not have breakfast.
We found a lot of dust on the picture frame and the wickerchairs looked like their was Mond on them the shower was very small. The hotel had no rooms grond floor rooms if you had mobility of walking it is not good. Going up the stairs was not good told that the hotel had no lifts has the hotel was listed buling.
Great location near station and easy to walk down through the park to the pier. Lovely quiet location.
Could have done with an extra small towel for my hair.
Location is good Comfy bed
No breakfast available Damp on wall Furniture needs updating
The hotel was great.... Breakfast was TERRIBLE
Breakfast!!!!! AWFUL!!! DONT have the breakfast!
Good location
Bedrooms dated
Old fashioned aspect although restaurant is of very high standard (Italian and SUN lunch).
Basic room (very old fashioned).
Location . Double room OK size & bed
Tiny shower, bedside lights not picking properly, heating not working & needed as big rokm in old building single room was tiny eith very narrow bed & big step into bathroom section & room was 2 long flights of stairs bathrrom double room gad tiny shower & nowhere to put towels or anything else . Wardrobe had 2 hangers single room had none Also restaurant was very slow service & had 2 ask several times for things, same as last time we were there or staff ignored us, waited for ages to be offered a drink & longer to get menus . Won't be staying there again
Very good breakfast (SUN lunch).
Nice comfy bed, quiet and decent shower
Staff were lovely and very helpful. Room we had was clean and spacious. Nicely decorated although bathroom somewhat dated. Location great, short walk to Penarth high street shops.
Nothing. Only minor issue was kettle in the room was too big to fit in sink to fill up and turning the bath taps only seemed to make shower work so resorted to filling it up by pouring water into it from a glass.
Location was convenient
Only one bedside lamp worked and the electrics were poor and an extension lead could be a hazard. The window sill was dirty. Unable to open the curtains well. The TV and controller didn't work. Noise transfer from other rooms was very poor.
I stayed in room 16, The mattress on the bed had big dips in it, one was so big I kept rolling into it, needless to say, I didn’t get much sleep, That mattress needs to be changed!!
Location is excellent. Town is lovely.
Parking was a pain. The pipes in the room made an horrendous noise. Luckily I had some ear plugs for my site visit or I don’t think I would have slept. Room generally tired and things hanging a bit. Kettle was yellow and too big to fill with water from the sink.
The old tradition of the hotel was different with the multiple keys for entrance to the hotel and room.
Where do I begin? Noting that it is a 2 star hotel it is never going to have air con but given it was a low 30s weekend in Cardiff they could have at least had a fan in the room as a standalone fan. When I booked the room I did not know it wasn't going to be a private room but a separate bathroom for my private use which you know again with the tradition I didn't mind the idea at first but then the quirkiness of it all wore pretty thin once you walked on the tiles which felt like they could give way at any stage and then you had the taps for the shower which were almost impossible to work to get consistent hot water. Also even with the heat the bed was incredibly uncomfortable to sleep on and again for a 2 star hotel (which does have a good rating on Booking.com) you expect better.
Breakfast was not included in my price but they did me an excellent breakfast for reasonable payment
Everything was good
Very clean comfortable room. No issues. Very quiet area.
Room on 2nd floor up a lot of stairs
The staff were perfectly pleasant and tried to do their best to accommodate me but I was exhausted and just wanted to have a good night of sleep. This I did not get.
I have tried contacting the hotel a number of times about my terrible experience and no one replied. I am not a sensitive sleeper which makes me all the more disappointed to report such an unfortunate experience in your hotel. The pipes in your bathrooms. In room 11 they were so noisy and kept me awake for an hour and a half before I eventually went to find a member of staff. Of course the volume was then reduced but the member of staff told me he could still hear the pipes, and moved me to room 21, reassuring me that the plumber would come and look at another time. The bed was not made in room 21 so I had to head back to reception to get sheets and make my bed. The same member of staff was very apologetic but it’s really not good enough. The bed in room 21 was so lumpy and soft that I kept falling out whenever I turned over. If you do not believe me, I would encourage you to spend the night in that bed and check your quality of sleep. On the same floor there is a noisy toilet and every time it was used throughout the night it woke me up. Not just the toilet flushing, but the noisy pipes and then the people talking, snoring and even the bed springs of people getting into bed. Neither bedroom looked anything like the room on your website leaving me to double check my booking. I appreciate working in the world of online marketing that your best room is going to be advertised, but I could find no evidence online of the two single rooms I saw, which I believe to be false advertising. The rooms are poorly insulated and heating was off all night. Luckily I had packed a hot water bottle but I was shivering all night. There were no extra blankets available in the room The bed frame was so old and the pillows so thin that I could not sit up in bed with the pillows behind me, as they kept disappearing down the side of the bed. This made for an uncomfortable experience all round.
Location only
Dust on all over the wardrobes, the bed rails, the tables and toilets. Multiple broken things as well, and the bed was very uncomfortable.
Room and breakfast were fine,
Separate, though private bathroom.
The room was cold and uncomfortable The bathroom was cold The WiFi did not work The TV did not work. Someone came to check and could not get it to work. They said they will speak with his manager and come back; he never did!!!!
See above very poor experience
Lovely big room & cool decor
Nothing
Very convenient for Penarth and Cardiff by the train station
The room was spacious
Breakfast was served between 8-30 - 9-30 which didn't work for me as I left for work at 8
Bathroom was ok, that was about it.
Very dark and drawn decor, small room, dim lighting, very dated furnishings and the bed was uncomfortable.
Good location, two of three rooms were perfect
Third room had separate bathroom! This wasn’t ideal
Charming, comfortable hotel with character. Helpfull staff. Restaurant downstairs was a highlight, food was top class
Clean
No lift , no light in stairs , my top room was so cold . The heating on for only few hrs during the day
Very friendly staff and owner , and the food was amazing!
The WiFi wasn’t great but was made aware of it that it’s being improved
Very convenient location. Did not have breakfast
No help with luggage because of earlier start
Central location..... cheap
Lots of noise from other rooms... never saw staff... room was smelly..... bed was uncomfortable
Location
All the facilities are obsolete and antiquated
Do cafe no quarto
Escada
Easy check in with a genuine welcome. Room as described with plenty of tea and coffee. The restaurant was excellent with great service.
Room, dinner, breakfast, location
It was a nice location, very easy to get into Cardiff on the train. Pretty area with a walk down to the pier. Room was basic but mostly fine. Staff were pleasant.
Unfortunately I thought it was overpriced for what it was. The dresser and all items on it were covered in dust, and the TV aerial wasn't working so I had to completely retune it. For the price I would see expect breakfast to be included. Fortunately my room had an ensuite but I would have been really disappointed if I had gone with one with the shared WC down the corridor.
Everything except I wasn't prepared for the stairs I had to climb. Worked out though, I got much needed exercise. Lol!😁
The bed size. I didn't expect a single bed. I guess I should have clarified that I needed a bigger bed. I travel solo but I usually book a queen or king bed. My fault.
Lovely bar, restaurant area, only there for 1 night for a family celebration at the Penarth marina,no complaints at all
N/A
Was dirty
Very close to train stations and bus stops that take you into Cardiff within 20 mins. Very clean and staff were lively. The restaurant downstairs was great too.
This isn't a big deal but the room I got had a bathroom not attached to the room which was unexpected. It was fine but just a little inconvenient.
I stay at the Glendale regularly to visit my daughter and granddaughter who live nearby. It is a lovely hotel above an Italian restaurant with very convenient access to Penarth train station with regular trains into nearby Cardiff. It has both single and double size rooms and I usually choose a single. The rooms are well appointed with rather basic shower facilities, tea & coffee etc. a very nice full cooked English breakfast is available (extra) and of course there is the very convenient excellent restaurant downstairs. The owner/manager is very friendly and chatty.
The staff were helpful and professional. Although the room needed to be updated nevertheless it was comfortable. I enjoyed the meals.
I was unaware of the stairs. At 74 i found it difficult. I would consider staying again, but would specify a room on a lower floor.
Quiet room, pleasant outlook, characteristic building with restaurant below. Good location for town.
No faults
The room was bright and clean, lovely crisp bedding. Tea and coffee provided along with a hairdryer and small iron and ironing board. The bathroom was also well lit, plenty of towels and loo roll, and mini toiletries provided. We didn’t have the opportunity to try an evening meal as the restaurant closes on a Sunday and Monday (understandable in the current climate), but the restaurant surroundings looked comfortable and well decorated and staged. It has made us want to return and try their food.
The bathroom towel rail was very hot and burned if you touched it - unfortunately you couldn’t turn it down or off, so we covered it with towels to protect us from touching it accidentally.
One of the rooms was very nice and comfortable. The single room less so.
Bath towels instead of bath sheets. Good finished at 9pm and you couldn’t get a drink after 10:30. The occupant of the single room complained that there was no hot water.
The room was comfortable and clean and did what it said on the tin.
Bath towels, rather than bath sheets Food finished at 9pm and you couldn’t get a drink after 10:30. Was quite expensive (£125) for what you got
There was no mattress or pillow protectors which isn’t very pleasant.
Late Check-in
Where to begin? Unfortunately, our experience with this hotel was far from satisfactory. The first room we stayed in was extremely hot, with no proper ventilation apart from a window that opened directly above the property’s HVAC system — which emitted hot air and only made the room more uncomfortable. One of the bedside lamps wasn’t functioning due to a blown bulb. Additionally, the room had visible marks and stains on the walls, floors, and furniture, giving a generally unclean impression. The bathroom presented a clear safety hazard: it required stepping over a high-sided bathtub with no grab rail to assist entry or exit — a significant concern, particularly for those with mobility issues. The Wi-Fi signal was weak at best, and the television signal was so poor and erratic that relaxing in the room became impossible. After raising our concerns with the manager on the first night, we were given a fan and offered the option of relocating to a family room at the back of the property, which we would all have to share. Unfortunately, the new room had its own issues. There were visible stains on the walls and ceiling, exposed wiring on the bathroom light, and a motion sensor light that turned off every 10 seconds — making it virtually impossible to bathe or use the bathroom comfortably. The manual switch was placed so high that my wife and daughter couldn’t reach it. There was also a clear trip hazard at the entrance to the bathroom, where the floor was raised about an inch higher than the bedroom floor, posing a danger in low lighting. Despite the multiple issues across both rooms, no compensation or refund was offered for the inconvenience and discomfort we experienced. While the staff did attempt to assist us, the overall condition of the property, safety risks, and lack of follow-through in addressing guest concerns made for a very disappointing stay. This hotel is in urgent need of maintenance and a review of its guest service policies.
Great stay here stayed for a golf tournament. Considering where it was in town no issue with noise. Food was Italian style cooked fantastic and catered for my dietary requirements. Staff were great always checking if everything was ok and too standard. Will 100% recommend and hopefully be back in the future.
The rooms were lovely. Beds comfortable and everything was clean
The breakfast, sorry. Bacon wasn't crispy at all, and the beans were disgusting 😔. It was like raw colour (bacon). The only other thing was we were not asked if we wanted brown or white bread for toast. So we had brown, which I would never have chosen. I dont think it was worth £12.50 each.
Excellent location, a 5 min walk from Penarth station with regular train service to Cardiff taking approx 12 mins. It is a large late Victorian property with many original features including a stunning Minton tiled floor in the entrance hall. I was met by the owner on my arrival who was very friendly and helpful. By the side of the hotel is a pathway that leads to the seafront through a wooded area. A walk along the pier and front I would recommend !
The shower curtain around the bath ...but everything else was excellent and great value for money !
A simple room. Very clean. Good air con. Bathroom facilities were good. Very close to the airport and easy to find. Just a 5 minute walk.
One very slight moan; most of the TV channels were not available. I did report this but no one came to fix it or replace the set.
Unfortunate to visit during the June heatwave as my allocated room was on the third (top) floor and it was boiling. There was an ineffective ceiling fan but it was impossible to get comfortable. I had to leave after one sleepless night. One power point was broken and there was a lack of long hanging space. Effective shower, kettle and hairdryer. Small television, but the picture kept buffering and pixelating - possibly due to the heatwave? Very poor internet connection - had to piggyback my mobile phone. Positives are the excellent location and quality of on-site restaurant. Beware when booking, as I was expecting inclusive breakfast but was asked to pay an extra £15. I hope this is a balanced report, and that some of the problems were due to climatic conditions.
