La déco de la chambre est un vieillotte mais ce n’est qu’un avis personnel. Sinon rien à redire.

Couldn’t turn off the light outside our cottage. Not a big problem, just was concerned about others with a light on all night

Reviewed Mar 28, 2026We made a last minute booking at Smylies and were very pleased with the accommodation. Friendly welcome from Keiko who showed us to our motel room. Good sized room with a well equipped kitchen for self catering. Nice big comfy bed and hot shower with a nice lounge area & TV. We were next to the main road but it wasn't too busy or noisy. We had a great night's sleep. The grounds are varied with animals nearby, a lush garden to explore and outdoor seating for relaxing. We were invited to visit the library and games area if we wanted. Colin was happy to share useful advice about the weather conditions and places we could visit along route to our next stay which we accepted and enjoyed along our journey. Many thanks Colin! We thoroughly enjoyed our overnight stay at Smylies.

Reviewed Jan 25, 2026We stayed at bowler cottage with our wee dog. It was so nice being able to be totally comfortable with her with us in our cabin. And the cabin? Absolutely fantastic. It was clean, comfortable and really well appointed. I stayed here to have a rest from driving, and I left looking forward to coming back to actually spend time here!

The room had a lot of space for 2 people and I liked the kitchen area. Everything you need at your disposal. The parking was right outside the room. We had an excellent night sleep.

Es war unheimlich hellhörig in dem Dorm, da der Raum direkt an der Straße gelegen ist. Man ist mit dem ersten vorbeifahrenden Laster förmlich aus dem Bett geschmissen worden. Zudem war es sehr kalt in dem Hostel. Es ist schon etwas in die Jahre gekommen. Die Betten sind sehr kurz, große Menschen werden ihre Probleme bekommen.

Regret that I didn't have time to enjoy the place more. Next time, I'll make the extra effort to drive out of Christchurch to stay here instead.

Lovely garden setting. Amenities very good bathroom / toilet had been recently updated. Hosts were excellent and ready to assist with anything we needed.

Reviewed Oct 29, 2025Booked last-minute as a poor weather stop-over, was pleasantly surprised by a warm, well-equiped, spotless and incredibly inviting hostel with very enthusiastic and welcoming staff. Would absolutely recommend and extremely good value for money!
The dorm room was a little loud in the morning next to the road, and could have more bed-side lights, but otherwise absolutely great.

The kitchen and shared spaces felt very homely and the fire in the kitchen/ diner really heated up the space. Facilities very clean and tidy. It was a good place to stop before our trip across Arthur's Pass the next morning.. Bonus that there are cute piggies!!
