Mitra Mcleodganj

Very disappointing experience — extremely poor management and hospitality I’ve stayed at Mitra before under the previous management and had a completely different experience. Unfortunately, the new management and staff made this stay extremely unpleasant. The biggest issue was the manager’s attitude and behaviour. There was no information during booking or check-in about any gate-closing time, yet I was later told that the gates would be closed around 11 PM and the staff would go to sleep. If this is a hostel rule, it should be clearly communicated beforehand, not imposed on guests afterward. When I requested some flexibility, the manager later behaved as though I had created a problem simply by asking. The next morning, I checked out around 10:30 AM and asked to keep my luggage safely in the common area for roughly an hour. Instead of simply explaining a luggage-storage policy, I was told that I would have to pay for an entire dorm to keep my bags there. When I questioned this, the manager became rude and confrontational and even threatened to throw my luggage outside. Considering the unpredictable weather in McLeod Ganj and the fact that I had valuable belongings including a laptop, this was completely unacceptable. The situation became so unnecessarily hostile that I eventually had to call the police to help settle the matter. All of this over keeping luggage safely inside the hostel for a short time. There were other service issues too. Nobody explained how to use the geyser, and I had to figure it out myself. When I mentioned it, the response was basically that I should have asked. That is not the level of hospitality I expect from a hostel. The general atmosphere was also uncomfortable, with staff having loud and inappropriate conversations in the common area, including comments about boys and relationships, rather than maintaining a welcoming environment for guests.

Mitra hostel is one of the closest hostel you can stay in for access to Mall road Mcleodganj. It's comfortable, value for money. There is a steep walk you have to take to get to the hostel, but all roads in Mcleodganj are steep so after 1-2 days you get used to it. There is a nice rooftop cafe with a view. Wifi speed was top notch. The building and things inside are a bit old, but everything is functional. Lots of travellers come in and go. The location is close to a lot of cool cafes and shops so no issue about anything. Overall, a good hostel.

The cafe upstairs always smells of smoke which I personally didn't like.

Mein Plan war es am Morgen mit dem Nachtbus aus Delhi anzukommen und dann direkt in das Zimmer einchecken zu können, weswegen ich bereits für den 14. Juni das Zimmer gebucht hatte und der Nachtbus am Morgen des 15. Juni ankommen sollte. Das hatte ich der Unterkunft in einer Nachricht auch so mitgeteilt, jedoch erhielt ich keine Rückmeldung. Als wir dann ankamen, wurde uns ein Zimmer zugeteilt, dass mit Deluxe und den Fotos nichts zutun hatte. Auf dem Flur befand sich eine Toilette, deren Tür weit aufstand und ein so widerlicher Geruch von Urin bis in den Flur zog. Unser Zimmer war direkt neben dieser Toilette und auch die Zimmertür stand weit offen. So hatten wir eher das Gefühl in einer Pissrinne auf der Reeperbahn schlafen zu sollen als in einem Deluxe Doppelzimmer. Die Bettlaken auf dem Bett waren dreckig und im Bad fehlte der Spiegel. Das Zimmer war kurz gesagt eine Zumutung. Zurück an der Rezeption beanstandeten wir das Zimmer. Der anwesende Mitarbeiter erklärte uns dann nur, dass die Toilettentür versehentlich die ganze Nacht lang offen stand (Spoiler: Sie stand noch mehrmals während unseres Aufenthaltes offen) Mithilfe eines Duftsprays versuchte er dann den Geruch im Zimmer zu verbessern. Wir wollten dennoch einen Zimmerwechsel als langfristige Lösung. Hier zeigte der Mitarbeiter keinerlei lösungsorientiertes Handeln, sondern es war ihm eigentlich egal. Erst ein anderer Mitarbeiter gab uns dann das Gefühl, uns helfen zu wollen. Jedoch war ein Zimmerwechsel erst nach 11 Uhr möglich. Tatsächlich fand er dann erst kurz vor 12 statt, eine Stunde vor dem offiziellen Check In. Das Geld für die erste Nacht war alles vollkommen zum Fenster heraus geworfen. Das neue Zimmer machte eine besseren Eindruck und roch vor allem nicht wie ein vollgepisstes Katzenklo. Im Bad gab es einen Spiegel, um den herum jedoch unzählige Spritzer von Zahnpasta waren. Auf den Fliesen lagen überall noch lange Haare, so dass ich selbst nochmal das Bad wischte.

The bathroom is acceptable and has a water heater inside. The lower bunk beds are actually on the floor . The terrace is a good place to relax and the view is quite good.

It's a tough walk up the slope to go to the square and quite a distance but still not too bad to walk to the bus/jeep stand

Réception staff was really kind and the top terrace is nice with a big shared space and a view on the mountains.

The whole building needs some serious cleaning and maintenance. Everything in the bathroom was dripping so the floor was constantly wet, mold on the walls and on the sanitary and a very unpleasant constant smell that permeates also the room. There are two hotels across the street and people from their balcony can look into your room (and they will!) unless you keep your curtains shut. There is no laundry service, no cafe or food service.

I stayed here for more than a week for workation and the thought of moving to another place did not even occur once in my mind. The staff is great. Hygeine is maintained. The roof top cafe is the highlight. The indoor sitting have got all the vibes with beautiful seating, views, music and great food. Food prices are reasonable. Outside terrace gives you a great view of mountains (You do not need to hike Triund). Its connectivity is the best whether its Dharmshala, Dharamkot or Bhagsu. This stay has got all the cafes just around the corner and best one falls over the roof of this stay 😉 Mitra hosts Mahi and Neema are kind and helpful. They never makes you feel out of home. They will sit and chill with you. Its a must go place when you are in McLeodganj. Recommended for workation.

They make you feel so comfortable that you end up staying here in one place only😄. Moving away to next stay when beds are not available will make you feel sad.

We booked due to its location. The receptionist was nice

We requested to extend our stay to include an extra day before our initial arrival date. The hostel got this wrong (despite me confirming twice) and there were no available rooms when we arrived, so we had to book elsewhere. They were happy to provide a refund, however they deducted 600 rupees for taxes, despite booking.com noting 350 rupees of taxes. They said this was for the tax of doing an international transfer, which they made us do for 50% of the booking ahead of arrival. In my view, it was the hotels mistake so they should be covering the cost, or at least the cost of the transfer they require ahead of time.

This is a good place with friendly staff and comfortable common space.

The room is located in a semi-basement and I stayed during the rainy season, so there was mold and dampness.

This place has a nice relaxed vibe with a rooftop cafe and lounge downstairs. The staff were friendly and helped me with recommendations for my time in the area.

I had a really great stay here! The beds were super comfortable and made for a good night’s sleep. The location is good—close to everything, yet quiet enough to relax. The hot showers were a big plus, always clean and reliable. I also loved the common room; it’s cozy and has lots of different games, which made it easy to hang out and while away your time. Shoutout to the friendly, receptionist lady who made sure I had a good time here. Overall, a friendly and enjoyable hostel—I’d definitely stay again!

The female guests in the female dorm forget it's a dorm and not their private room and kept locking the door, which made it hard for me when I got back in the middle of the night. But 0 complaints about the hostel!

Everything was perfect from room to the amazing rooftop with stunning view exeptional hospitality by the hosts Neema & Aastha and how can i forget the pet Cat 🐈

Location is very nearby to the main market, walking distance but you will have to hike everytime you leave this hostel. Also this road always have a traffic jam. Bed was comfortable, room was okay. The Views was good, there was a cat, that was good.

Staff is very cold, no services even though we had a private room. Blanket was smelly, the balcony was storing rain water. A money broke a glass in the balcony. We informed the staff, they didn't come it to clean till our checkout that means for 5 days. We stayed here for 6 days. Poor staff, poor management. We talked to them about our luggage to be submitted as we had to do Triund trek and we had our bookings the next day, but nobody came, we stayed there for good 30 minutes to keep our luggage but nobody helped.

Everything was amazing. The location is great, the beds are really comfortable and the staff was really cheerful especially Atul for his wonderful advices about the town. I will definitely come back !

Clean rooms, quite comfy beds with thick blanket and curtains, well working hot water in bathroom, quiet nearby streets at night. Moreover, good wi-fi and electric plugs, water fountain next to reception to refill your bottle and save plastic, chill rooftop, tiny but friendly common room and place close to a few very good restaurants. Finally, excellent and welcoming young staff that makes their best so you have a nice hostel stay. Thanks again!

Prices changed on a daily basis. The 6 bed dorms have bunks that are three high. One of which had nothing to hold into at the top. The rooms were not cleaned to a good enough standard.

I loved the Karoke night and playing UNO with others. Hostel is clean and neat. Beds are good and overall location is good. There is this one very nice Tibetean restaurant near hostel, please do try out food over there, it's very good and nice.

The staff is nice and helpful. They take guest’s request seriously and try their best to meet the demand. Neema is quite warm, make you feel safe and welcome.

My bed on top of 3 tier bunk beds was quite difficult to climb. Room and washroom was basic.

I had a great stay at this hostel. The location was super convenient and made it easy to explore the area. The facilities were clean and well-maintained, and the rooftop views were absolutely stunning—perfect for relaxing at the end of the day. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful throughout my stay. Would definitely recommend :)

Music of any sort. 1. Very noisy place. All night barking dogs. 2. It’s bad idea to shout down car’s horn and barking dogs with all day music on reception, all day music at dining hall. 3. Suppose, tourists visit this place looking for peace and quiet. With expectations to hear voices of nature and birds.

The property’s location is great, but it’s the people — especially Parin Shah and Nima — who truly make it special. Their hospitality and energy bring a unique charm to the place. The facilities and atmosphere are equally wonderful. You should definitely check it out!

Really nice staff. They upgraded our room for free and helped us organize a taxi to Palampur. The hostel had a good feel and has an awesome roof deck.

Slightly further from the main square, but the views are probably worth it.
