Reviewed Oct 28, 2025I went to Longyearbyen for activities related to the University. The accommodation is really close to the university entrance and the museum (just a 5–10 minute walk). Moreover, there’s also a bus stop in front of the university with connections to the airport — extremely convenient! The staff are really kind and helpful in every situation. There’s a small grocery (and souvenir) shop that was very useful to me, because since I arrived on Saturday evening, the supermarket in Longyearbyen was closed on Sunday and only open for a few hours in the afternoon. The kitchen is equipped with everything you need to be self-sufficient for a few days, and the rooms are very spacious and quiet. If I ever need to return to Longyearbyen, I will definitely stay at this place again.

Reviewed Aug 27, 2025Ich wurde freundlich empfangen, mein Zimmer war perfekt vorbereitet und mir wurden alle Informationen gegeben. Alles war sehr sauber, ordentlich und ruhig. Personal war immer anwesend und sehr hilfsbereit. In der Küche gab es so gut wie alles was man brauchte - das einzige was gefehlt hat war ein Kartoffelschäler. Es fühlte sich wie zuhause an. Vielen Dank für den schönen Aufenthalt.

Reviewed Jul 23, 2025The greeting by Sam is good and he explains everything.
It a basic backpackers accommodation. Which means if you are 20 to 30 you will be ok but if you’re older you will hate it. We are respectful that it is at the end of the earth but the owners could give you shower soap,a bottle of water as you can’t drink out of the tap, just basic things like tea or coffee and long life milk for guests arriving late. You need to find the supermarket which is quite a walk and buy everything. The beds are bunks and there is no joy in the hostel just basic walls. Sorry Sam but try something to be a host for older customers.

The path to the entrance of Russkiy Dom led through a construction site. Better signaling from the bus stop at the university to your accomodation would be helpful.

Reviewed Sep 20, 2024Sam! He is just amazing. Always one call away. Very responsible and fast in response!!! Room is basic but cozy and always with heaters on that kept me warm!! Clean and well equipped kitchen!
Most of the local tour won’t pick u up in front of the place, and airport shuttle bus stop with around 300m distance, shuttle won’t stop by in front of the place to pick you up either. It’s would be easier is u are taking backpack. But if u are carrying big luggage as me, pls be mentally prepared, 300m wasn’t far but those are small rockies road, it would be a bit tough to walk But overall, it’s a great place to stay!

The shuttle bus refused to take me to this guesthouse. He took me close by and then told me where I had to walk, when I asked him why he wouldn’t take me, his retort was ‘I’m not bringing money to the Russians’ Speaking to some other people Svalbard feels a threat from the encroaching Russian war.

Reviewed Jul 18, 2024The room and living room are comfortable to live with, the toilet are clean and bedroom are tidy. there are enough space for you to hang the cloths and put the luggage.
There are no breakfast provided in this hostal, you will have to cook or seek out any opportunities in main street. Also there are no cotton so the light are coming in all day, you have to bring your own eyemask by yourself.

There is no staff at the service desk, you need to use your phone to contact. The floor is wooden, which makes a lot of noise when people come back late, and the window has no shade, and the bed is exposed to direct sunlight 24 hours a day. The airport bus does not pass by, and it takes 10 minutes to walk and the road is uneven. Not recommended.

Reviewed Jul 12, 2024Good location, close to the museum, shops, restaurants and harbour. Kind staff (even though I arrived at 1.00 am due to airplane delay). Very spacious room, well equiped kitchen, all very clean. Good value for money! The entrance is at the back of the building and the name of the property is not mentioned on the building. Look for a grey building at the water side with 'visit Spitsbergen', Pyramiden and Barentzburg on it.
The airport bus does not stop at the location, so you have to walk for about 5 min. with your luggage (or have the accomodation pick you up at the airport).

Reviewed May 11, 2024Exceeded my expectations. Sam was there to great us for check in. Sam is very nice and keeps the place very clean. The kitchen/common area is spacious and has good amenities. I would definitely stay here again.
The only downfall is that the bed was not the most comfortable and it squeaked a lot. I switched to a less squeaky bed the second night and that was better. Neither of these would detract me from staying there again.

Initially hard to find, but just look for the building with the bright red signs! Bring your own teabags, but other than that, fantastic place.

Reviewed Nov 1, 2023Firstly I have to say how great Simi and Yulia were. Honestly they were so welcoming and helpful and friendly. A great place to stay is definitely made by great people. It was so clean and spacious. It was super easy to organise trips and get information on things going on in the town. The location was great and the view from the balcony with the town and mountains was stunning. I even caught a glimpse of the northern lights right off the balcony. I have stayed in a lot of hostels around the world and this has to be my favourite. Honestly I couldn’t fault it and I was so sad to leave!

Reviewed Oct 23, 2023A small guesthouse, 4 rooms and living room/kitchen, very clean, rooms with several beds, but accessible as singles. Fully equipped kitchen with anything you might need for your stay. Decent price, close to the city center, near the University, a few minutes walk from the bus station, 10 minutes to the supermarket and the city center. The very kind and friendly staff were there for any need, including suggesting trips or helping us with a taxi. Special thanks to Julia, with whom we tried for two nights to meet Aurora and did not give up until we were successful! I will come back to Longyearbyen with great pleasure and will definitely stay at Ruskiy Dom!

Reviewed Oct 23, 2023A fairly new place by the looks, down by the fjord and snowmobile sales lots! Gorgeous views from the end of the track over the fjord. Enthusiastic and informative staff who run the hotel and also a small shop of Slavic goods in at the back (the front of the building is not the side you'd expect coming from the centre of Longyearbyen!). It's really a hostel not a hotel, but the room was warm, clean and comfortable, the showers and toilets well maintained, and the kitchen area well equipped with a great view over the hills and town. Overall it's a really nice, and very good value, place in a really quite magical part of the world.
For the price it was all good.

The communication was very hard and almost to impossible. No reply for almost a month, no answer to any of our questions and 4 messages completely ignored. The accommodation offered us to order taxi from the airport beforehand, then they stop communicating and when we took a bus and got there someone told me, they actually cannot order a taxi, that this option is now not available. Very confusing and bit upsetting!

Reviewed Jul 5, 2023Staff was very good and helpful. they arrange day trip to many attractions. It is close to city center but there is no pick from this dom for any day trip conducted by other tour operators - you need to walk to near by pick up point ( Radisson blu Hotel ) but it is very close ( 3 minutes walk ). Longyearbyen settlement itself is very small so it doesn’t matter where you stay ( everything is at walkable distance). I will stay here again if I come back to Svalbard.
Widow curtains are not blackout - I was there in summer ( 24 hours sunlight) so it should have been a black out curtain :)
