What a gem and lovely people.
Silent bungalow have their own jeeps and can take your directly to Udawalawe National Park Safari with the owner’s son as driver and guide. Dushal was incredible at pointing out mongoose, lizards, birds, and sharing facts about elephants. I’d recommend asking if you can leave for the safari to arrive at gates opening as it seems lots of animals are less active in the middle of the day. The dinner provided at 7.30pm by the owner was sensational and was well needed after a day of travel. The owner genuinely made me feel welcome! There’s also a beautiful cat (cats) that wanders the premises If you arrive late in the evening, stay one night, and do an early morning safari (3 hours, 4 hours, or half day), you’ll have an amazing time.
These comments aren’t a reflection on Silent Bungalow itself but more a suggestion to align with expectations Unfortunately, I was the only guest at the bungalow for two nights. While this isn’t the fault of the owner, there really was not much to do at the Bungalow nor was it very easy to get into the village to eat meals or look around. The village was also fairly deserted as it was the low season (May) - another reason to limit your time here. In all fairness, the accommodation (basic bed, fan, bathroom) is close to what you’re paying for. However any mobile data or wifi connection is non existent. The bungalow is about a 20 minute walk from Ret Junction (close to where the Elephant transit home is located). I’m not sure what the solution here is but just note that Silent Bungalow isn’t suitable for anyone wanting to spend time in Udawalawa itself. Even the owner himself, Sudath, didn’t really suggest anything to do around the town. Was also unfortunately locked into the property at 5.30am when I wanted to go watch the sunrise. This isn’t so much a budget oasis in the jungle but rather a budget friendly stopover for your safari trip.
Hosted by a very friendly and welcoming family, we felt right at home at this lovely place. Cooking class was fun, educational and we ended with delicious food! Safari to nearby park was great as well.

Good location for Udawalawe national park. This is a family run basic, low cost guesthouse, you can pay extra to eat at the accommodation and it was pretty good Sri Lankan food. They also offer their own safari package and the safari guide was very knowledgeable.
The accommodation could really do with being upgraded.
Fabulous home cooked food (and cookery lessons). Peaceful garden setting and well located for a safari, which they provided, at the national park. All the family members were cheerful, friendly and helpful.
Really friendly, nice owner. We got everyday different breakfast and dinner - (vegan). They explain how to eat. If we travel again, we will stay again there. ❤️

A lovely spot nestled in the heart of the forest, with spacious, spotless rooms. The hosts were exceptionally attentive, and the meals were excellent. We took the afternoon safari, which was a great experience. We were initially concerned about disturbing the animals, but our host was mostly respectful of their space and behavior, while also making sure we avoided the other tourists.
Dinners were a bit pricey compared to the room rates.

The room was comfortable and the food was delicious!! We were made to feel so very welcome! Thank you. They organised a late notice safari and we were spoilt with all of the animals that we spotted!
We stayed 2 nights and it’s was amazing ! We had an excellent time there with the best sri lankan food. We did a full day safari and it was very worth it, we learned a lot of things, we recommend it ! The family was very welcoming !
Nothing
Amazing friendly owners, cooked us the nicest dinner of the trip. Very happy with safari they organised. Appreciated the 3 beds in our room as travelling with a family. Excellent value for money.
Our balcony area was a little small for all 4 of us (only 3 chairs).
Perfect location for us to visit the elephant transit home and the national park. The owners were really friendly and cooked phenomenal food. They organised us a safari with their son who was really knowledgeable and he spotted lots of wildlife which he pointed out to us
Nothing
Sudath and his family looked after us very well. They provided great breakfast and dinner, and Vikash (his son) took us on a lovely long safari.
The guesthouse is quite a long way from the village
I booked the Tour to Udawalawe Nationalpark with the Family and one of the sons took me. He knew a lot about the animals there and it was nice to see how he has a Special Connection to the Park/Nature there. I highly recommend!
Great welcome and attention from the host and his family. The host has a jeep and his so is the safari guide. We had the best Safari in a Sri Lanka (best of 3). His English was excellent and wildlife knowledge was first class. We would recommend Silent bungalow as very good value for money and thank you to the team. We had a great stay.
All good. It is a jungle based accommodation to do bring your insect repellent spray / cream.
Sudat is an extremely friendly host! He helped me organize a pick-up/drop-off. I had also booked a safari through him which was fantastic and worth the price!
Fantastic stay, great safari with the son and the mums cooking is excellent. Huge breakfasts too
Very secluded property, as if you were in a forest.
Nothing
A small, peaceful location offering very affordable and exceptionally clean accommodation. Ideal for a safari, with the owners arranging an outstanding half-day experience. The optional breakfast and dinner featured delicious, home-cooked local cuisine.would highly recommend .
Only minor point , more PowerPoints in the room would be useful
The hosts were absolutely lovely and helped us arrange our safari (which was amazing) as well as providing a delicious dinner and breakfast. Room is very peaceful.
beautiful location, in the middle of the landscape. very friendly hosts and we had very good breakfast as well as dinner there. very calm.
you should just keep in mind that it is surrounded with nature, so it comes with quite some mosquitos and ants. but there are mosquito nets, so nothing to worry about.
Lovely people, very clean and comfortable rooms with fans, excellent breakfast.
Nothing
Settled in a quiet location with bird life around
A little dark and damp, but could be dependent on the season?
Exceptional place. Sudath and his family take excellent care of you. The food was the best we’ve had in Srilanka, the safari was exceptional, and the hosts are lovely. Can’t recommend this place enough :)
We loved our dinner at the restaurant and the safari tour the owner organised for us was the best of the three safari tours we did.
It was really perfect! We had the best breakfast ever surrounded by éléphants it was amazing. The guide was really great and understood the job of taking our Time in the safari. Everybody was super nice! We had hot water which is not the same everywhere. If you want to do a safari this is the best adress
Nothing
A quiet, simple and natural guest-house with charming hosts. If you are looking for nature and also do a safari with the best driver and experience to see elephants, birds and wildlife in the natural park of Udala, you are in the right place! Unforgettable memories!
The hosts were lovely and sorted everything out for us including safari (with a delicious breakfast) and a taxi the next day. The food we had for dinner was fantastic. Some of the best rice and curry we’ve had in Sri Lanka!
Make sure you bring mosquito spray. You’re in the jungle so ants are an inevitability!
Lovely host, very good food
The room is well equipped and have everything we need. The area is indeed very quiet. Hosts are friendly and not pushy

Lovely friendly family run guest house in a quiet location with big, clean, high roofed rooms. Excellent large breakfasts and recommend staying in for the dinner too for some great local food. Also highly recommend the safari run by Sudeth and family. Excellent un-rushed tour of the park, stopping to see all the animals, birds and beautiful views with knowledgeable and informative guide. Thank you very much for the great stay and drop off at the bus for our onward trip.

I couldn't recommend Silent Bungalow enough!! The rooms were perfect with a fan. The curries were some of the best we've had. The breakfast was lovely and plentiful. They organised our tour guide for Udawalawe as well as the food and drinks. Our driver Rishal was amazing. He spotted everything and stopped with the engine off for as long as 20 mins when we came across some elephants. This meant that the elephants came closer and we got to appreciate the peace and quiet. Definitely a highlight of our Sri Lanka trip!!
Really nice homestay sudath was very helpful and attentive. We had dinner and breakfast with them and that was probably the best curry we’ve had in Sri Lanka so far :) highly recommended staying with them. Sudath can also arrange safaris :)
Sudath and his family were hospitable, friendly and very helpful. You feel like you are in the middle of the forest, falling asleep with the sounds of birds and frogs. The food was delicious and plentiful and communication was professional and efficient all along. Highly recommended.
Having to leave after just one night!
Sudath and his family were fantastic hosts, everything was delicious. The safari trip was absolutely amazing and Sudath has such amazing knowledge about the park and really cares for the environment. He will try his best to find and stop at all types of animals including even the smallest birds and lizards! 100% would recommend to anyone.
The staff were amazing and welcomed us with tea and snacks as well as arranged a private safari trip with their very knowledgeable sons. The room was very big and we also had a private terrace. The food was very good and can definitely recommend having breakfast and dinner here
Unfortunately, there were quite a lot of ants in the room but this comes with it being in nature. Also, the shower was not very good as it was mainly just a mist
Very friendly hosts who made us feel very welcome. Dinner was amazing and so tasty! Would highly recommend staying and eating at the Silent Bungalow. Hosts also provided a super safari experience and helped us with our onward travel.
One of our favourite stays in Sri Lanka. Excellent value with incredible staff, Sudath and his family/team made us feel so welcome. We had tea and snacks on arrival and home cooked Sri Lankan food for dinner and breakfast which was delicious. We messaged beforehand and he arranged a safari tour with his son which was incredible. He also arranged a last minute taxi for our onwards travels which we were grateful for.
Nothing, we loved this place.
Excellent food, nice staff. Safari arranged by staff was wonderful.
Hotel was a bit too far from town. By
Tour to Game Park was excellent. Breakfast and dinner was above expectation. The service from the staff was first class and lacked for nothing.
NOTHING-Everything was excellent
We had a great stay here and our hosts were excellent at making our stay as comfy as possible. The location is quiet and the garden has a “jungle” feel” . Our room had two large beds and a drying rack, mirror, and case rack. There were two good fans in the room and the large bathroom had a warm shower, although during the day there are regular power cuts so be prepared for a cold shower now and again! Everywhere was very clean and the mosquito nets were good to have as a back up to our mozzy spray. Our hosts Sudath and his wife Kanei made us very welcome and we enjoyed a laugh with them whenever we saw them. Sudath has sons who drive to the safari or the Elephant Orphanage or even on long journeys so they can arrange whatever type of trip you like at a fair price. We stayed 2 nights and the breakfast and dinner was both very plentiful and delicious! The Elephant Orphanage is a joy to visit and just a few minutes away from the Bungalow, and on our safari Vishal (or was it Ayush?!) was excellent at spotting the birds and wildlife and made sure we did see elephants even though it seemed they just wanted to hide away for the first few hours. We found it a great experience to stay at Silent Bungalow to a big thank you to all the family!!
Nothing
Good value for money! Nice tasteful breakfast and dinner. Great safari by the owners son! All in all a great stay.
This is a fantastic budget guest house run by the most friendly couple. Food is exceptional evening and breakfast. Rooms are incredibly clean and large. Location mins away from safari.
Nothing
Feeling one with nature on this location. Sudath and his family are wonderful people. The food is very good and it felt like home. Maybe a pool would be nice ;-)
It's all been said before, clean spacious room, excellent breakfast and dinner and knowledgeable driver/guide who respects the wildlife. We did a six hour trip in the afternoon which was great as we didn't have to get up early
The owners were really helpful and welcoming. The safari tour experience was great.
Was a bit disappointed by the prices of meals. The dinner curries were super delicious both times we had it, but the price we ended up paying was too much even for European standarts.
Very kind people, good food and excellent safari.
The rooms are spacious, spotlessly clean, simple, with good mosquito nets and fans. we received a very warm welcome with tea and delicious cake! the bungalows are very private and peaceful, set in shady grounds in a quiet area. All the food was delicious and available in huge proportions! Our hosts arranged an absolutely brilliant afternoon safari at a good price, our guide, their son, was so respectful of the animals and nature and was extremely knowledgeable, answering all of our questions. He was great at spotting the wildlife and we saw loads - many elephants, of course, but also lots of other birds and animals. We were really satisfied. our hosts also arranged transport to the elephant rehabilitation centre which was well worth it. The communal dining was lovely, we enjoyed meeting other guests and the monkeys provided much entertainment! Expect a few ants - impossible to avoid in this area! We would not hesitate to recommend Silent Bungalow.
Really kind family. Excellent food, excellent safari.
The best value for money - clean and spacious rooms, tea and cake on arrival, organised a great safari with the owner who was incredibly knowledgeable and experienced. His wife cooked us one of the best meals of our month in Sri Lanka. Thanks again!
The rooms are clean and spacious. The owners are the nicest people, and they organise their own safaris in the national park - which was excellent. Another highlight was the dinner, which was incredible and great value.
Sudath is incredibly helpful. He fixed me up with a safari guide and time slot within half an hour of me arriving. The evening meal was huge and delicious. He drove me to the bus stop the following day. A brilliant host.
The WiFi was patchy.
We headed to Udawalawa for a safari and picked this accommodation based on a recommendation from another traveller who said she’d done a brilliant safari with the son of the owner from Silent Bungalow. The safari was incredible and very easy to organise through the accommodation. We told Sudath we were interested in a safari before we arrived and he gave us all the information we needed when we checked in. Sudath’s son Vishal took us out in the jeep and was very knowledgable about the animals and Udawalawe National Park. He kept a good distance from the animals and we didn’t feel like we were crowding them. He took us on nice routes that felt off the beaten track and was very helpful answering all our questions and giving us plenty of time to watch all the wildlife we saw (elephants, lots of different bird life, reptiles and even a leopard which ran across the path). The roads in general are really beautiful as you drive along the outside of the national park and can get great views over the lake/dam all the way to Ella and Nuwara Eliya in the distance, and to Hambanatota the other way! The accommodation was spotless and room huge, with lots of space for your things (tables, vanity, chairs, cupboard). The bathroom had a very powerful shower too which is always great! The hosts were amazingly helpful and very attentive. Sudath was very eager to help, answering all our questions and ensured we had everything we needed. The food was delicious, genuinely the best we’ve had in Sri Lanka, if you have the option to have dinner here, take it up! For our safari we were provided with a pack up breakfast in the national park which was amazing - you even got to have a another cup of delicious tea infused with ginger! We would highly recommend Silent Bungalow to other travellers, particularly those interested in an eco conscious safari. If we returned to Sri Lanka we would definitely go back!
Nothing - it was great!
Quiet, big room, food excellent, owner/host was lovely and helpful and organised a safari at very little notice.
Damp, but the weather had been horrendous, so this may have been unavoidable.
Nice room with terrace, very quiet. House.made curry was the best we have had in Sri Lanka. Safari with the son of the house was a great pleasure, he noticed every small or big animal, he gave us time for watching and a lot information - and served us a delicous breakfast during our 6 hour morning tour. A peaceful and enjoyable tour! Thanks for this.
The place is right on the beach, it was safe for the kids and they loved to play on the beach. It's also just 5 min drive to Mirissa. Delicious breakfast prepared by the owner.
Excellent dinner and welcoming host, who also did the safari with us, which was great.
Best vegetarian rice and curry. Owner arranges great Safari. After the Safari he drove us to the bus station and also we had several tea and cookies provided.
Nothing
This is the best place that we were stayed during our trip. That place is very clam, silent, clean and beautiful place. The owners are also very friendly and they serve to customers properly. Their services and treatments are excellent. There charge is also very fair. This place can be highly recommended. I think this is the best place for Udawalawa visitors to stay and enjoy trips.
Spacious and spotless rooms with comfortable bed equipped with mosquito net, fan, private bathroom with hot shower and outside sitting terrace. The room price of 6$ per night was fair. The lovely couple welcomed us with tea and cake and help with any regards. They have their own Safari Jeeps. We went on a 4h Safari with them for a jeep price of 13000 rupees (fits 6 persons, excluding national park entrance fee) which was well organized. They offer dinner and breakfast on request which we however didn’t take. The place is very peaceful and quiet, about 25min walk to the main road where you can find shops and good local restaurants. Recommend this place for a short stay and Safari.
For the price nothing to complain about. The Wi-Fi didn’t work in our room but we had our mobile data anyway.
It was just wonderful! Sudath and his family are so nice, we had a really great moment. Warm welcome with tea and cake. We did a safari with them, I really recommend. They will show you all kind of animals, we can see they are passionate of nature and animals. Do not hesitate, book there!! ❤️
The place was fantastic, clean and spacious, especially for a taller gentleman the beds were massive. The terrace outside was great too for the evenings but what really made it was Sudath, his wife and son. They made us feel welcome throughout and personally managed everything from the taxi at our arrival, the food we ate, the safari and the travel on to next stop. The breakfast and dinner they served were amazing, showcasing real Sri Lankan food, I’d definitely recommend it. It was great to get picked up by the family and Sudath also took us around the natural park. His eyesight is incredible and he showed us so much of the wild life that Udawalawa National park had to offer. Our group would all throughly recommend this place, it was great.
Perfection
Sudath and his family were wonderful hosts and made our stay really special. They went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. The food was so delicious and Sudath was so helpful in arranging a safari and giving us advice on travel plans! We would highly recommend this as a comfortable relaxing place to stay!
Modest room but very cheap, everything was fine. The owner was great, he took us to a perfect Safari tour. Dinners were perfect too. Thank you very much.
There was nothing we didn’t like.
Amazing hosts! A beautiful and delicious family dinner (the best we had during our stay in Sri Lanka) and also breakfast.
Nothing
The family who run Silent Bungalow are very friendly, hospitable and helpful. They helped me book an amazing half day safari of Udawalawe national park, gave me lifts to places I needed to get to and provided recommendations for the local area. They also cooked breakfast and dinner for me 3 days in a row and each meal was delicious. There was no need for me to eat out in town. All of the facilities worked and it’s in a beautiful surrounding. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay there and would recommend this place to everyone looking for a base to explore the area 😁
Nothing - it was a lovely stay!
beautiful clean rooms in the heart of the jungle. lovely family welcome, including a delicious home cooked meal on our first night. We booked the half day safari through the homestay and would highly recommend. excellent tour guide, very knowledgeable of the park. would 100% recommend.
Simple but large and clean rooms. Feels like you are staying with a lovely family. Delicious Sri Lankan dinner. Great safari with really knowledgable guide and delicious breakfast.
The best food I had in Sri Lanka. The Host were really kind and helpfull. I really loved the stay I had in Silent Bengalow.
Excellent place, very close to Udawalawa. Food was excellent and Sudath was great. Organised the safari with them and it was fantastic.
Nothing
When we arrived they invited us to a snack, and they had dinner ready for us. Sudadh and his family are charming and very attentive. We did a Safari with him and it was amazing, he organized everything and it was a highly recommended experience. Thank you
The light was not working well and was on intermittently all the night.
We had a wonderful stay at Silent Bungalow. The family were so attentive and really went the extra mile to make our stay comfortable. From free pick up at the bus station, to tea and treats on arrival, to prompt and delicious dinners and free drop off at the bus station. Lovely family and fantastic hosts. We had an amazing safari with Ayoush, he was super knowledgable about the wildlife in the park and we got so close to elephants. It really was magical.
It was located quite far from the nearest town, but close to the national park which was our main reason for coming. Also it didn’t matter about not being close to restaurants as all the food we had there was delicious and massive portion sizes! The mother is a very talented cook.
good value! helpful and kind owners… with fabulous food!
a little basic.
