Old Chilli House

This was by far our favourite stay in Sri Lanka. As soon as we arrived, we asked if we could extend our stay, which probably says it all! The property itself is beautiful, thoughtfully designed and carefully curated by the owner, Kris. There are so many little details that make you feel instantly at home, which was a lovely change from some of the other places we stayed that could feel quite clinical and basic. We especially loved the indoor-outdoor design and having breakfast on our private terrace. The plunge pool was also such a great touch and perfect for cooling off. Kris himself was incredibly welcoming and genuinely made us feel at home. He checked in on us every day, gave us lots of helpful recommendations and advice, and was always happy to help with anything we needed. We absolutely loved our stay and would happily come back. One of those places that makes you wish you had booked for longer!

The property is tucked away from the main hustle and bustle of Unawatuna, so you’ll definitely need to rely on tuk-tuks to get around. The property is in a village setting, so there can be some noise from the surrounding area.

Het was een geweldige ervaring, zo'n prachtig appartement. Het mooiste wat we op onze reis in Sri Lanka hebben gehad. Met een heerlijk, groot balkon waar we een prachtig uitzicht hadden vanaf de 3e verdieping. De eigenaar vracht ons tegen een kleine vergoeding met zijn tuktuk naar locaties waar wij wilden zijn. Ons ontbijt en ook een keer een heerlijk zelfgemaakt diner werden op ons balkon gebracht. Kortom, als je in de buurt van Unawatuna bent, ga hier zeker een paar nachten boeken!

Il gestore e la sua famiglia sono attenti ad ogni necessità e sempre a disposizione. La sistemazione è bellissima, pulita e senza insetti. Il wifi ha il segnale costante e veloce. Si possono raggiungere alcune spiagge a piedi. Colazione ottima.

Главный плюс этого отеля — это его гостеприимные хозяева! Невероятно дружелюбные, открытые, светлые люди, готовые всегда сделать все, чтобы ваше проживание стало максимально комфортным. Мы жили в номере на самом верхнем этаже, с прекрасным видом на джунгли. Если любите зверей, будьте готовы увидеть, издалека или вблизи, пальмовых белок, обезьян и множество разных птиц! Второй плюс, но это не для всех, удаленность от основных «движух» Унаватуны. Не доходит тусовчоного шума, всегда можно спокойно выспаться и восстановить силы. Пешком можно дойти до пляжа минут за 25, но хозяин предлагает подвезти на своем Тук-туке за умеренную плату. Помимо прочего, он может отвезти вас и в близлежащие магазины или к достопримечательностям. Также хозяева предлагают вкусный завтрак за хорошие деньги, в окрестных ресторанах вы отдадите за такой в два раза больше денег, а ещё он очень вкусный! В общем, всем, кто из наших друзей и знакомых будет собираться на Шри-Ланку будем рекомендовать это место!

We waren de eerste bezoekers van deze kamer en het was werkelijk fantastisch! Schoon, modern en heel gezellig aangekleed. De host geeft veel informatie over de omgeving en heeft een avond besteed aan hulp bij het uitstippelen van onze route. Het bij te boeken ontbijt is heerlijk en ook kun je eventueel in de avond een rijst en curry bijboeken, heerlijk!

Een klein minpuntje is dat de kamer geen horren heeft tegen muggen. Gelukkig is er wel een airco dus konden we de luiken dicht laten.

Het is een hele fijn ruime accomodatie. De host heeft veel te vertellen over het huis en wilt je overal heen brengen. We hebben zelf ontbijt en curry gegeten die zijn vrouw had gemaakt en dat was heerlijk!! Hij brengt je overal heen met de tuktuk wat heel erg fijn was. Het is een hele ruime accomodatie met grote keuken en een fijne patio waar je lekker kan zitten en borrelen. Bedden waren top, badkamer was heerlijk schoon en groot. Echt een van de beste verblijven die we tot nu toe hebben gehad. Ook was mijn tas vergeten in de taxi naar negombo en toen had hij ook meteeen geregeld dat die weer terug kwam, erg fijn als je morgen gaat vliegen :). Zeker een aanrader!!

The apartment is so spacious with a full size kitchen and the private verandah is perfect for relaxing and looking out at the jungle. Kris could not be more helpful.

Apartment is absolutely amazing, with a beautiful terrace and breathtaking views. The space is spotless, comfortable, and very well maintained. The owners are exceptional—friendly, welcoming, and always ready to help with anything you need. They also offer a tuk-tuk service, and the owner can personally show you around, which makes the experience even more special. Breakfast is available at an extra cost. A truly wonderful and memorable stay.

Все было отлично. Хозяин всегда на связи, отзывчивый и дружелюбный. Номер чистый и уютный. Есть собственная зона отдыха и отдельная индивидуальная кухня. Место тихое. Рядом есть кафе. До главной улицы 5 мин на байке. Пешком не ходил, но люди ходят. Однозначно рекомендую.

Kris is an incredible host with a talent for hospitality. I loved staying at this homestay near Unawatuna. The apartment I choose was newly developed, perfectly clean, spacious, private, and well equipped. Kris was really friendly and welcoming. He helped me get around wit his tuktuk and made sure I had everything I needed for a safe and comfortable stay. Breakfast was delicious, plentiful and great value for money. I would 100% recommend this place to anyone visiting Sri Lanka.

Wow! Honestly one of the best places we have ever stayed. Everything is perfect, so clean and spacious. It feels like a tranquil slice of paradise. Khris the host is one of the nicest people we’ve ever met and consistently goes above and beyond. The optional breakfast is absolutely delicious and plentiful. Don’t hesitate to book here!

We absolutely loved it here Chris the owner was so welcoming and friendly. Our room was brilliant and the view from our balcony was stunning a great place to relax any time of the day. I loved it first thing having my coffee. We had the optional breakfast and it was fantastic . Old chilli house is away from the main busy area and road so you’ll get a great night sleep. Can’t recommend enough!

Wir waren 3 Nächte im neuen Zimmer im Anbau. Das Zimmer war inklusive top ausgestatteter Küche und einem großen hellen Bad. Kris ist wirklich ein super interior Designer. Das gesamte Apartment war super schön eingerichtet und wir haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt. Die Dachterasse mit Blick ins Grüne ist ein absolutes Highlight. Kris ist zudem ein sehr hilfsbereiter, netter und lustiger Gastgeber. Wir wünschten wir hätten länger dort bleiben können. Wir würden jederzeit wieder kommen.

Kris ist der beste Gastgeber den man sich wünschen kann, er ist sehr freundlich und zuvorkommend, hat immer ein offenes Ohr & hat uns sogar bei Ausflügen begleitet. Ohne seine Hilfe und Fürsorge, wäre unser Aufenthalt nur halb so schön gewesen. Das Frühstück ist super & preislich fair & die gesamte Unterkunft war sauber & komfortabel. Es hat sich wie „Zuhause“ angefühlt.

During our three-week trip through Sri Lanka, this was by far one of the best places we stayed – actually probably the best. The room was honestly amazing, so beautifully done and everything felt brand new. You could really see the attention to detail. The view was incredible and made the stay even more special. The facilities and equipment in the apartment were better than anywhere else we stayed – everything you could possibly need was there. Breakfast was also nicely prepared and always a great start to the day. KRIS was such a wonderful host. He took care of everything and made us feel completely welcome. He even drove us around with his tuk-tuk whenever we needed and was always there to answer any questions. We truly felt looked after the whole time.

The only small downside is that the location is a bit outside of town, so you need to take a tuk-tuk to get around. But with KRIS helping us, that was never really a problem.

We had such a wonderful stay at Old Chilli House. Kris was the most amazing host! He provided everything we needed and was very helpful all aspects of our stay, providing transport to and from different locations. We were lucky enough to have some incredible breakfasts and dinner made by Kris. Had our own private apartment which we felt very welcome and comfortable in.

We hebben een heel fijn verblijf gehad bij Old Chili House. De accomodatie ziet er super uit. Het is heel erg ruim en de eigen keuken en terras zijn perfect als je zelf je ontbijt/ avondeten wil maken. Wij hebben vooral gebruik gemaakt van het ontbijt dat aangeboden werd door de eigenaar en dat was mega lekker! Daarnaast is de eigenaar heel aardig en heeft ons geholpen met het regelen van vervoer naar het vliegveld. Verder hebben we via zijn broer een surfles gehad die ook heel goed is bevallen. Kortom een perfect verblijf in een van de mooiste accomodaties tijdens onze vakantie

Unser Aufenthalt im old Chili House war einfach perfekt! Nach einer langen Anreise wurden wir mit einer gekühlten King Coconut von Kris herzlichst empfangen. Das Appartement ist mit viel Lieben zum Detail eingerichtet. Man kann selber kochen oder sich von Kris mit Frühstück oder selbst gemachten Curry verwöhnen lassen. Das Essen genießt man auf dem wunderschönen Balkon mit Blick in die Natur. Der Strand war in einem 20 minütigen Spaziergang zu erreichen ebenso einige Geschäfte des täglichen Bedarfs. Wir würden diese besondere Unterkunft und seinen Gastgeber jedem weiter empfehlen! Ein Highlight unseres Urlaubs!

This home stay made my heart happy the moment I walked in. Kris is quite possible the loveliest human you will meet. He wants you to feel at home and will help you organise any trips you wish to do and is happy to take you in his own tuk tuk. If you are visiting Unawatuna, I couldn’t recommend the Old Chilli House enough. You will not regret it one bit.

Lovely apartment with great facilities. Our host Kris looked after us very well. We had a great breakfast on the sunny balcony every morning. He took us in his tuk tuk any place we wanted to go.

Beautiful place, absolutely loved the sunny patio so having breakfast out there was great - also had a couple of chill-out places in sun/shade with fans, kitchen and bedroom/bathroom were lovely and the surrounding gardens/greenery were beautiful. Kumara was great, taking us to Galle in the evening, recommending places to eat with places being closed for the New Year and taking us to the bus stop for our next stop. Loved it!

10/15 minute walk to Unawatuna beach which we really liked being in the more rural part but something to be aware of :)

We only stayed there for a couple of days, but we were extremely pleased with our experience. The hotel owner is incredibly friendly and polite, always ready to help with a smile. He also offers scooter rentals, which was a great convenience for exploring the area. The overall atmosphere was welcoming, and we felt right at home. Highly recommend this place for a comfortable and enjoyable stay!

Old Chili House is an absolute gem! From the moment we arrived, Kris made us feel incredibly welcome. It’s peacefully tucked away, yet just a quick 5-minute bike ride to Unawatuna and the main road. Plus, the WiFi is super good! And you have fully equipped kitchen, and lots of space to lounge around. And don’t miss breakfast - Kris makes the most delicious omelette, paired with fresh fruit and passion fruit jam. If you're looking for the perfect place to stay, this is it! We can’t recommend it enough.

Everything! Home away from home. Beautiful place and room, you have a big terrace and your own kitchen to enjoy. The host was incredibly kind and helpful, prepared amazing local meals for us. He also has his own tuktuk, so can easily drop you off wherever needed. This is definitely a place where you can stay for weeks if you have the opportunity. It is a good location as you are away from the noise of the main street, we will definitely miss our time sitting on the terrace and listening to the sounds of nature.

When your visit starts with a fresh coconut, you know you’re in for a great stay. The apartment is lovely, with the cutest outdoor seating areas—we enjoyed every moment! Kris treated us to a delicious homemade dinner and breakfast, all made fresh. This has been our favorite stay so far!

The location is a bit bumpy by tuk-tuk, but nothing too bad—just a short 10-minute ride. If you’re traveling by motorbike or car, it’s totally fine.

Old chilli house is one of the best places we have stayed. Kris & Devika are extremely welcoming, making you feel at home instantly. Kris is very helpful with planning days out and can also provide travel with his tuktuk. We recommend doing the cookery course with Devika as we’ve learnt how to make an authentic Sri Lankan curry which was delicious. We would also recommend the fresh and tasty breakfast too! The surroundings of old chilli house are beautiful, it has a wonderful jungle feel to it and is only a short tuktuk ride away from the centre of Unawatuna. We particularly enjoyed sitting on the balcony watching the sunrise with a coffee- pure bliss. The apartment has everything you need to make it a comfortable stay, whether that be days to months. Thanks again Kris and Devika for such a memorable experience, we wish to be staying longer! We will certainly recommend to anyone who visits Sri Lanka to stay here and we will be back when we visit again.

Old Chilli House was an outstanding place to stay! The room was beautiful, in a little pocket of nature and a short tuktuk from Unawatuna. Kris and Devika went above and beyond ensuring the room had everything we needed and regularly cleaned. We enjoyed some of their homemade breakfasts and would recommend this to anyone staying - we were also lucky enough to be treated to Devika's amazing curry. Kris kindly offered a tuktuk service, and was a huge help planning trips out - he has fantastic recommendations and also works with a wonderful, reliable driver. We arrived as guests and truly left feeling like we had a great friend and would not hesitate to stay here again.

Very good conditions. Quiet away from the hustle and bustle of the local community. The host is a wonderful person. Kris helped us a lot to recover our lost luggage by the airlines. I envy myself that I was there. I highly recommend . This apartmentthe place is clean. nothing is missing.

We stayed at the Old Chilli House with Kris and his family for 3 nights. We were greeted with such a warm welcome - on arrival Kris and Devika gave us king coconuts and Devika cooked us amazing curries (prawn, beetroot, bean). Kris was so helpful giving us tips about the surrounding area, restaurants, and also lent us his snorkelling masks and was very happy to drive us to Galle and Mirissa. The property was clean, spacious and had beautiful views from the balconies. We especially loved having breakfast on the balcony amongst the forest and wildlife. A lot of thought had been put into the property - it came with adaptors, bottled water, mosquito net. We cannot recommend the Old Chilli House enough - thank you again for your hospitality!

The by far greatest hosts we had in Sri Lanka. We enjoyed Kris and his families warm welcome, their delicious food, and planning our trip around the area. The rooms were well equipped and felt like a true home to us. It is not far from the beach and the place has a lovely nature around.

It was very clean and had a nice view! We had our personal kitchen where we prepared food.

The apartment is beautiful inside and out. You can tell there’s a lot of time put into making the space homely and comfortable. Kris is an amazing host, greeted us with cold coconuts and lots of advice about the area. I wish we could have stayed longer!

The Old Chili House is just the perfect place to stay!! Especially if you want some peace and quiet away from the noisy city Center. Kris, the owner, is one of the most attentive and nicest host we have ever encountered! He and his lovely family live downstairs. Anything you need - Kris is your man! He organised everything for us and when we had a little medical “emergency” he drove us straight to the doctor and made sure we got everything we need from the pharmacy. Highly recommend to do a day trip with him to the temple / koggala lake, we had such a nice time! He will tell you lots about the country & culture. There are two apartments, ours was on the left and it was huge!! Great balcony with a chill out area where you can watch the monkeys snacking on bananas. Big kitchen with everything you need for cooking yourself some food which is a nice change as most apartments in Sri Lanka don’t have that. But please don’t miss out on the delicious dinner they offer! Or even take a cooking class with Devika, Kris’s wive, where she will show you how to prepare the most delicious curry’s. We haven’t tried the breakfast but are sure, that it’s also very delicious! The bedroom is very big with enough space for your clothes and we loved the bathroom because the shower is behind a little wall and not right next to the toilet like in most Sri Lankan bathrooms. The A/C works perfect and the wifi is excellent. If you are a light sleeper take some earplugs with you as sometimes the dogs in the neighbourhood bark very loud but that happens everywhere :) You can take a shortcut into town which will take you up to 15-20min to the Main Street or a tuk tuk for about 500-600 LKR. We can’t recommend this place enough!!!

Really nice Apartment right outside Unawatuna. It's located in a small village in the jungle. Kris and his family are truly the best hosts you can imagine. Overall we can highly recommend staying with them. The apartment has everything you'll need to be happy.

The stay with Kris and Devika was very pleasant. Kris was very helpful throughout our stay. He took the time to take us to Galle and Mirissa with his tuktuk. For the smallest things he will give you advice and solutions. He takes great care of his guests. They even welcome you with a fresh coconut ! The room is very clean, the bed huge and very comfortable. There's even a large, well designed kitchen and terrace. The Sri Lankan breakfast was excellent. Super stay, I recommend ! The owners were very friendly. They gave us a lot of useful information and recommendations about Unawatuna and they are also very nice to talk to. The breakfast was great and the dinner was also very tasteful 🤩. The appartement was the best, so clean and so luxurious. We booked one night extra because it was so good to be in the Old Chilli House 🌶 .

Very nicely designed apartment with a lot of chill area and everything you need. The location is very quiet and it feels like in the middle of the jungle with lots of birds and wildlife around. We had a good time in Unawatuna thanks to this apartment and the host Kris, who is very attentive and kind.

Perfect if you want to get to know a loving local family and experience the feeling of real Sri Lankan lifestyle. Spacious room with en-suite bathroom. Full equipped kitchen next door and amazing balcony to chill surrounded by hibiscus and butterflies.

A charming apartment with a wonderful outdoor chill area. Compared to your standard hotel room there is a lot of space. The kitchen is completely separate from the bedroom. The host family is very nice.

It's in a quiet residential area about a 25 or 30 minute walk into town. It was too far out for our tastes.

Old Chilli House is lovely. It is away from the busy road, it is on the second floor and in amongst the trees. Old Chilli house has been tastefully designed and furnished. I really enjoyed my stay at Old Chilli House and loved Unawantuna.

The apartment is spacious, has a good location and most important to mention: amazing owners and hosts! I was welcomed warmly and also during my stay, Kris and Divika were so helpful. I had the tastiest Sri Lankan food here as well. Make sure to also try Divika‘s breakfast and dinner, it is so good! I very much enjoyed my stay and can totally recommend to stay at Old Chilli House.

Perfect balance of traditional style and comfort. The room has a separate entrance through the stairs and a large comfortable balcony. The kitchen is clean and well equipped. Good location, the sun leaves the balcony around 11 am, during the day it is not exhaustingly hot, which is also helped by high ceilings. Very friendly hosts and good atmosphere, you really feel like a guest, not a client. Not the fastest internet, but Dialogue and Hutch have a good signal.
