Reviewed Jun 9, 2026The Avonlea Guesthouse is one of my "go to" accommodations in Polokwane when traveling for business. The rooms are very large and well appointed. Breakfast is a standard affair, but is more than adequate and prepared for each guest. The staff at the guesthouse are always friendly and have a ready smile.
My only challenge is that when you have a larger vehicle and there are other guests, manoevring to align with the angle of the exit gate is not simple due to the confines of the parking area, but is manageable.

Het is erg gehorig zowel in het pand als geluiden van buiten naar binnen (vooral blaffende honden). Ontbijt is beperkt als je geen eieren wilt eten.

Reviewed Nov 8, 2025The 3 ladies Agnes and others were, friendly, helpful, and hospitable. They made our stay enjoyable.
I am not sure about their manager. If anything she needs to pull up her socks and ensure all her customers are treated and given the same care. During the evening there is no one to offer help encase of emergency, especially for clients coming outside South Africa. No guesthouse helpline phones for any emergencies. It might be good also to have a physical security for help to hotel residents.

1. There were petty rules e.g i am not allowed to take the iron in the bedroom. 2. Breakfast was served and the boere wors served with the breakfast was the size of my thumb. 3. Shower was not comfortable. 4. Room had no aircon. NB..the owner charges too much. I paid R990 per night for a room with no aircon, uncomfortable shower and at breakfast the wors was 4cm long. NB.. paying is not a problem but it should be value for money.

The toilet seat is loose. The kettle needs to be descaled or replaced. It looks like someone boiler mud in it. Not even a cup of coffee or a coffee station with breakfast. The staff is more worried about having a chat with each other, rather than helping the customer
