I arrived early and surprised the manager/owner, so we chatted and he showed me around the property.
The stairs are very steep with open steps and my large dog who just happens to be a big baby, found them stressful and needed to be managed up and down. We were careful going up and down after our glass of wine... The only other downside was that the back garden was open on each side of the house and it would have been great to be able to let the dog out and not worry about him getting out and running in front of cars.
Beautiful, traditional style cottage, spacious and comfortable inside, in an amazing location
Beautiful tranquil location.
Fantastic location everything within ten min drive great places to eat and drink and the scenery like no where else on earth .
Nothing to dislike about this place the best spot god ever created.
Alles 👍.
I was contacted by the owner who told me where to find the key. We loved the quiet and scenic location. The cottage i believe is 200 years old and very quaint, full of history. The owners are very helpful people and I would recommend Cul Cottage to anyone
Nothing
Charming old cottage on ridge looking either side of Valencial Isalnd. Cleaver re-working of what would have been a very basic house a hundred years ago- now with log burner, shower, modern kitchen. Very friendly host.
This is an older property- vague mustiness probably inevitable (much helped by the log-burner). Ironic to be within a couple of miles of Ground Zero for telecommunications (1866 style), and 150 years later just patchy cell-phone reception and no internet!! Stairs not for the feint-hearted…
What a treat to stay in a 200 year-old stone cottage reminiscent of days gone by. So much character with all the creature comforts we’ve come to expect. Small but plenty of room for we 3 seniors - even the very steep staircase to the bedrooms was manageable! Ger stopped in when we arrived to give us a run down of how to work everything from the peat burning stove to the quirky hot water system (which seems the norm in Ireland.) The cottage was perfect for our first 3 nights in Ireland - perched on top of a hill with great views and little traffic - but Is was the people of Valentia Island that truely made our stay magical! Thank you and we hope to be back!!
Truly the loveliest place to stay and so scenic! We had the very best time and felt right at home. Our host was also very responsive and always kept us up to date on everything and even heated up the house for us when he heard we were getting in late! Can wholeheartedly recommend!
Es ist das älteste Cottage auf Valencia und so schön im Detail renoviert … Die Lage und Aussicht ist perfekt.
Our stay at Cul Cottage was absolutely amazing. The cottage feels like a step back in time. A traditional Irish home full of warmth and cosiness. The views from the house are second to none, and the property itself is spotless. We had a warm shower with great pressure, and the location was ideal. That said, the island is quite remote, which is part of its charm, so make sure to bring everything you need before arriving. Thankfully, the cottage was well-equipped with everything we could possibly need. One of the highlights for us was that the property is pet-friendly. We were able to bring our two fur babies, which made the experience even more special. Ger was an absolute pleasure to deal with (such a gentleman.) The fire was lit on arrival, and he even rang on day two to check if we’d like it lit again. We would 100% recommend Cul Cottage to friends and family, and we’ll definitely be back hopefully in the summer when the weather’s a bit better! That said, even with wind and rain warnings, the island was still breathtakingly beautiful. There’s truly nothing like an Irish getaway 🇮🇪 ☘️
Absolutely nothing
Quaint traditional cottage with everything you need. Comfortable couch and beds, great stove especially for winter stays. Doggy friendly too!
Just beware that the stairs is very steep and there are low sides to the bedroom ceiling.
Lovely location with great views (when the weather permitted) Extremely quiet with bird song outside. Rustic traditional cottage.
Expensive to pay extra money on top of the accommodation cost for heating and hot water. I was only 1 person and was very careful in my usage but was asked to pay an additional €10 per night for my electricity plus I already also bought approximately €20 of firewood for the fire.
Beautiful cottage, well equipped, clean and very welcoming.
Lovely location for exploring the Island and beyond.
das Wetter, sonst nichts
Loved the cottage – full of charm, warmth, and traditional character, with unforgettable views across Dingle Bay. The hosts went above and beyond to make us feel welcome, offering a level of Co. Kerry hospitality that extended well beyond Valentia itself. Every outing, no matter how far we roamed, ended with the same thought: we couldn’t wait to come home to Cul Cottage. As we explored the coastline steeped in legend, we found ourselves tracing the spirit of St. Brendan’s voyage — the very shores from which he is said to have set sail. Just across the bay lies Brandon Creek, and while Valentia isn’t named in the old tales or Christy Moore’s song, standing here it’s easy to believe this could have been part of his journey. Cul Cottage felt like the kind of place one might return to after such an odyssey — a quiet, welcoming haven at the edge of the world.
Beautiful, tranquil and peaceful cottage which was really well maintained, amazing views from front and back of cottage, loved watching the sunset each evening from the back garden Bedrooms immaculate cosy and comfortable We can't wait to return for a longer stay!!!
Nothing
it was central to all the sights. very peaceful. views were amazing.
our stay was too short
The vintage look both outside and inside the house
We loved the cottage, it had everything we needed plus the feeling we had stepped back in time, it was amazing. The view changed everyday, it was a magical location.
The stay wasn't long enough, we didn't want to leave.
Cuil Cottage is as perfect as its pictures. Warm, homely, well equipped with the most breathtaking surroundings. Ger is a wonderful host.
Nothing
Beautiful traditional Irish cottage in a stunning location. A real little gem for getting away from it all. It is a traditional cottage so not big, but has everything you need. No tv or internet which is a breath of fresh air, but if you have to stay connected getting a signal is not a problem. The Host could not have been more helpful.
You're in rural Ireland, so take out full insurance on your hire car. We did and we were very grateful. The roads can be very narrow so pushing against hedgerows to get past oncoming cars is not uncommon.
Authentic cottage experience

This cottage was perfect for us in every way. The views from all sides are stupendous. The location is absolutely stunning. The cottage is beautiful inside and out; much care has been taken to keep original features and retain its traditional feel. It is also incredibly cosy and comfortable. The little kitchen has everything you need, the shower room provides lovely hot showers, the bedrooms have plenty of storage and lovely, comfortable beds, and the living room is just beautiful with the fireplace at its heart. There is also a lovely garden at the back with beautiful views out to the Blasket Islands- the perfect place for a morning coffee! Ger was very welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed. The island itself is very idyllic with so much to see. This is easily the most beautiful place I have ever stayed.
Perfect little cute cottage, a wee retreat from the busyness of life!
Loved everything!
Loved the peace . The views from the cottage were amazing . Scenic walks to do. . Kerry cliffs . Geokaun and Valentia lighthouse worth a visit as is the heritage centre. . Already looking forward to a return visit .
Nothing.
Great location.
Electricity calculation could be more transparent but very little to dislike
We are a Ukrainian couple who came for the weekend to explore the local attractions. Based on the reviews, we understood what the main house represents, this is the flavor of ancient Irish life. we got what we wanted, because Irish culture is very similar to Ukrainian. traditions, household items, culture, food and the desire to stand as “OURS” no matter what! a luxurious house with a real spirit of Irish history... Anyone who has been to “Bunrati Kastel” will immediately feel the same emotions....don’t think that when you come to this house, you will definitely experience exceptional emotions. Thank you very much for supporting the national culture and history of your country. If you want to know more, you can see photos and videos about it on my Instagram @yana.dolya.nails I will be glad to have new subscribers
Anyone who wants to find flaws can find them even in a luxury hotel...we were looking for the color, history and spirit of Irish life... everything that could be thought of in this house for comfort was done. The owner of the house even arrived earlier, before our arrival, to light the stove, since we arrived late. Thank you very much for your hospitality and comfort. I highly recommend it to everyone who is looking for a relaxing holiday and solitude, who wants to join ancient traditions!!! a million thanks!
If you are looking for an experience for days ago with a few modern conveniences you couldn’t find better. I so loved experiencing what my great grandparents would have. Out the back you have views of the great blankets and the sleeping giant out in the sea. Out front you have views of Portmagee and the sea as well as the Skelligs. You simply can’t go wrong with this listing and the experience. ❤️
The steps to the bedrooms are steep but that is to be understandable due to its age. All part of the charm.
We had the absolute privilege of spending a few days in Cul Cottage over Easter 2024. Ger and Derarca have created something really special here, allowing people to experience a step back in time on the edge of Ireland. Staying in a 200-year old cottage is, of course, not going to be the same as a modern holiday home...the house has its quirks and that's part of the charm! Bring plenty of fuel for the stove, get cosy and enjoy this very special place.
Leaving!
It was clean and the property location was lovely. Ger who we met was a lovely gentleman. It’s perfect if you want the 200 year old house experience
Staying here is not for the faint of heart outside of summer weather. We booked 5 nights but could only stay one we were freezing cold and the fire gives out almost no heat.
Lovely homely old irish cottage. Great to have no TV or Internet for few days.
Beautiful, quaint cottage with tasteful, 'old Irish' decor in a lovely location full of wild nature & scenic views. The host had made an effort to put up beautiful Christmans decorations for us - a lovely gesture. Ample parking. Very comfortable & clean beds with more than enough extra blankets. Promised mod cons were there & working. Having no TV was amazing! The peace & quiet at night was extraordinary & we slept extremely well.
Message from host after making the booking to say we would need to pay separately for electricity since the cost of energy has increased. We wrote back to say that this was not specified in the Booking.com advert so either we would not pay separately for electricity or we would request a full refund. The host agreed to not charge extra. Cleanliness aound the house (apart from the beds which were clean) was only fair & in some places poor. The house was very damp; windows & walls became very wet when cooking even with extractor fan on & window open. The shower (which appeared to be electric but apparently was not) ran cold very quickly (after about 4 minutes) so on some days we had cold showers; then again maybe we did not understand the system... The stairs were very steep & taller family members knocked their heads more than once coming down; one would need to be physically able to access bedrooms as both are upstairs.
Beautiful views, nice restaurants and Pubs.
Property is gorgeous, everything you need. Warm and cosy. Fab garden with the most incredible views.
.
Authentic experience of staying in old cottage. Beautiful views and lovely location. Ideal fo exploring the island and also the surrounding area. We were fortunate with the weather. Loved the electric blankets and comfy beds.
The info on Booking.com said that there was a restaurant on site and an outdoor bath?? There was no restaurant. fortunately we had food with us as after a long journey we were too tired to go searching for food. Light switches were high up on beams so not easy to access for short people.
It was perfectly located with beautiful ocean views from the back garden. The cottage was like going back in time. Blazing fire at night made it feel so cosy. Fully kitted out kitchen was ideal for a family who need to have cooking facilities or couple who want to totally detach from technology for few days.
I can't fault anything. It is a 200 year old cottage so was exactly as I expected. Wonderfully different.
We met Ger who gave us a tour and the keys, and who had already got a fire going for us. He went above and beyond throughout our trip, and we felt very cared for! Already looking forward to coming back.
I found Cuil Cottage by chance when driving by on a road trip a few years ago and fell in love with it. If you are looking for a place to get away from it all with quiet and solitude, this is it. No better way to unwind after a long countryside stroll than to sit by the fire and read a good book! Also, the landlords are awesome. They stopped by to check in on me and even gave me lots of their homegrown tomatoes. Thank you so much! I‘m looking forward to coming back soon.
The water in the shower and sink smells a bit funny due to the old pipes. Derarca and Gérard provide containers of fresh water for drinking and cooking though, so that is not really a problem.
Its a fairytale cottage, very charming and rustic. The views from the backgarden are amazing, and occasionally a horse or a cow will say hello. It transports you back into a different time, just with all the modern day comforts. The beds were really cosy and the kitchen has everything you need if you want to selfcater. We didnt use the electric heaters as it wasnt that cold during the day, but we lit the stove every night and it gave a lovely warm atmosphere. The internet connection is really good. There is a lot to explore in and around the island, our 3 night stay was not long enough! Our 5 and 8 y old kids loved it too, so we will definitely return.
As others said before, the shower is not one to enjoy, but we knew that by reading the reviews before and it didnt put us off. Regarding the sitting arrangements, maybe a small armchair or rocking chair in addition to the couch would provide another cosy seat. The monks bench is awesome but quite uncomfy to sit on. It didnt bother us as our kids went to bed early hence we had the couch to ourselves, but if you would have 4 adults staying, it could get uncomfortable on the bench.
Excellent hosts, my wife and I had a very comfortable and enjoyable stay at Cul cottage, wished it could have been a longer stay.
No negatives.
lovely traditional Irish cottage
it was damp and very basic
