Our group of 5 arrived and felt like we had stepped back in time, the home was magnificent, beautifully decorated in period furniture. The bedrooms romantic and luxurious. The gardens were grand and a perfect place e to relax. Our host Gina was amazing, incredible attention to detail. Gina and Riccardo looked after us through the whole period, we felt at home. We would definitely recommend to anyone as it was an unbelievable experience. Thank you

The Great Gatsby was nothing short of amazing. It exceeded all of our expectations and truly felt as though it had stepped straight out of the book. As a book lover and someone who has read The Great Gatsby, I found this hidden gem to be absolutely worth the visit. We originally booked because of the gigantic bathtub, but we will definitely be returning for so much more: the kindness of our host, the delicious breakfast complete with fresh orange juice, and the magical atmosphere of the garden. My partner and I loved every moment of our stay and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and memorable experience

I was welcomed very warmly by the hosts. The house is marvellous. The room was spotless clean, loved the reading material provided, the art on the walls. It was a cold winter night, there was an electric blanket and a heater in my room, which was absolutely thoughtful (of the hosts) and awesome. I truly enjoyed my stay at the Great Gatsby, will visit again.

We stayed at The Great Gatsby for one night and couldn't have asked for a better place to end our trip in South Africa. It's such a beautiful property, but what really made our stay special was the incredibly warm welcome. The people running the place were so kind and welcoming that it genuinely felt like coming home. Our room was spacious, with an absolutely massive bathroom. I especially loved starting the morning with a relaxing bath surrounded by candlelight. As it was winter in Johannesburg, the nights were quite chilly, but the little heater in the room was surprisingly effective and kept us warm. Thank you so much for your wonderful hospitality. We'd happily stay here again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Great Gatsby to anyone visiting Johannesburg.

Gina and her staff were super hospitable. Nothing was a bother. The house was spectacular and Gina kindly upgraded our room which included a warm fire. The bed was very comfortable and had top quality bed linen. Very luxurious! We have traveled around Africa for 2 months and this was definitely best value for money anywhere. We will definitely be back anytime we have a Joburg transfer. Thank you so much Gina!

It was truly unforgettable. Gina, Riccardo, and the entire staff are incredibly friendly, welcoming, and kind. Gina is exactly the kind of person who makes you feel like you have family in Johannesburg. She genuinely cares about everything, even making sure your commute goes smoothly. Everything was perfect. She invited me for tea on my first morning, upgraded me to a fantastic room, and made me feel completely at home. The property itself is beautiful, and the food was excellent. I had dinner there, and it reminded me of Christmas family dinners—warm, comforting, and full of love. Thank you for making my stay so special. I can't wait to come back! ❤️

We loved our stay, we were 12 girls on a golf tour. We loved the atmosphere of the history and beautiful house. The host and staff was great and really friendly. We were sad only to stay for 1 night.

Views that made the concrete jungle surrounding somehow seem majestic and worthy of a Walt Disney Dreamworks’ production intro! The hostess was so accommodating and just the right balance of professional, humble and fun. Spotlessly clean and cozy as can be! Will definitely become a part of the regulars squad!

The property in itself is stunning. The rooms are large, clean and beautifully decorated. It was lovely to meet Gina- her recommendations were perfect and we had the best time at the hotel. Gina even packed us an early breakfast as we had to leave for our safari. I cannot recommend this hotel more. The location is residential and safe as well. Don’t think, just book.

Its in whole Johannesburg not safe to walk alone outside . Even in a very good neigbourhood , like where the hotel is, its recommended to take ubers/taxi's

Although the bathroom was located across the corridor rather than being directly connected to the room, it did not cause any inconvenience. The hosts were very helpful and attentive. For the beautiful, stunning mini apartment, Le Bijou (which i stayed in) it would be best to include a small note in the description that accessing it involves climbing a lot of stairs, which may be difficult for some guests.

My room was spacious, appropriately decorated and it catered for all my needs. Gina is a vivacious, caring host. I really enjoyed my first (and definitely not my last) visit.

I was lovely and well located for the event we were attending.

Things were a bit disorganised when we arrived. The staff werent sure which rooms we were in. The names of the rooms on booking.com were different to the names the staff were using. We also didnt have any hand towels in our room which we only realised when we go home from our event at midnight. Also, we booked deluxe double rooms and thought theee would all have an en suite bathroom. Maybe this could be a bit more clear although looking back i see this in some notes on the site.

Very peaceful and calm, I stayed in the king room which is part of the second house which you will have full access to, if you looking for peace and quiet this is the place.

A most beautiful and historic property with a charming atmosphere, situated in a lovely neighbourhood. The owner, Gina, and her staff were exceptionally friendly, welcoming, and always available to assist. We stayed in one of the mountain-view units, which offered absolutely magnificent views over the northern suburbs of the city. The trees and gardens created a tranquil and peaceful ambience — a pity we only stayed for one night. Our unit provided all the amenities one would need in a self-catering unit. It was spacious, tastefully decorated, and the bathroom was practical and newly refurbished. Everything was spotless, the Wi-Fi was fast, and security was excellent. The mountain units do require climbing quite a few steps, so they are best suited to guests who are reasonably fit and travelling with lighter luggage. That said, the views were absolutely lovely and well worth it. We will most definitely return, although next time we will likely book a room in the main house or coach house, as these offer easier access without the steps. All the rooms — whether in the main house, coach house, or mountain units — are beautifully decorated, and we look forward to returning for a longer stay in order to fully appreciate the wonderfully preserved historical interiors. We had a truly fabulous stay.

The only downfall was the pool area was not so clean. Im sure it looks better in summer. Got lost a bit but was able to contact the host and she was quick in answering. I like that check in n check out times are early and late. We got to sleep in and have some expreso. The mountain view is beautiful. The staff is great. Electric blanket was helpful.Clean,facilities aee all there n functional.

That the house number is not noticeable so its easily missed especially when you coming up the hill

The property is beautiful. The interior decorating of the main house and cottages is exceptional. The hospitality is great, and watching the sun set from the top with close friends, wine and snacks were unforgettable.

The mattrasses need replacement in the two cottages.

It was a privilege to stay in this beautifully restored former mining magnate's mansion. Gina is an exceptional hostess who caters to your every need. She and her staff create a relaxing vibe where all guests feel like old friends. The view is fantastic, the architecture alone makes it worth a visit to take a step back into Joburg's history.

The owner Gina is wonderful and really takes care of all her guests. Mike was there to make sure we were checked in and shown to our rooms. The breakfasts were tasty and the decor in the rooms is spectacular. Location is perfect and easily accessible to the motorway. Will come again.
