Reviewed Aug 31, 2026The Bed Style and privacy. Friendly people and busy staff. We'll laid out rooms, kitchen and toilets. The key card system functions satisfactorily. Location is ideal for buses and main town events, museums. churches, library and cinemas.
The toilet dispensers, while of a regularly used design, good in theory, are always a pain to use. finding the end of the roll, etc. The problem is the grade of paper they are using is far too light!!! So it tears to shreds easily, will not come flat off the roll, but twists up, gets holes in it making it quite unhygienic and hard to use. Thus little bits litter toilet floor so someone else has to keep picking up. If the owners try they will see immediately the problem (and I am sure they use a higher grade of paper on their homes.) And I am sure many of the other guests would think the same! Although it is a high use hostel, keeping the thinnest paper is false economy as people have to use much more. Get that Problem solved and Then the hostel will be Perfect.

The air fan in 9G bed is permanently on. Even when the card is removed. You might want to get an electrician to check that out...

No circulation in the room. Very smelly, not enough space,no laundry to do washing. And worst ov all I had food taken with my name on it and staff didn't do anything about it. Not good at all.

Reviewed Jun 8, 2026Ive stayed a few times as I fly into Dunedin and travel up to Oamaru. I have to ph each time to make sure I have a bottom bunk for health reasons stuffed knees and vertigo. Staff are always good at making sure I get a bottom bunk when I call. Its good to deal with real people and having a place to store my gear and staff on till my bus leaves at 12ish. That's why I always use uptown backpackers over others.

Por la disposición del edificio, la social area queda en el centro y desde allí se distribuyen las habitaciones. Sentí que tanto en las habitaciones como en la social area el aire estaba muy cargado y necesitaban ventilación diaria.

Reviewed Apr 29, 2026Modern room. We got given a tour of the hostel on arrival - not all hostels in NZ seem to do that and it was handy to have things pointed out! Eg free rice, pasta, cooking oil and hot drinks in the kitchen.
It was a little cramped with not many bathrooms.

Reviewed Apr 27, 2026・コーヒー、チョコ、紅茶等が無料で飲めること。 ・洗濯及び乾燥を全てスタッフがやってくれて且つ10ドル程度で済むこと。 ・中心街、特にオクタゴン、バス停、スーパー等に非常に近く、アクセスがとても良いこと。 ベッドにドアがついていて、最低限のプライベートが守られること、また、鏡がついていたり、電気もつけられること。 ・スタッフの方や同じ利用者の方との距離が近く、初対面の人とすぐに仲良くなれたこと。 ・以上の点を加味して、初めての1人海外旅行を経験する私でもすぐにこの環境に適応でき、快適にダニーデンを満喫することができた。
ベッドの壁や鏡に少し前の利用者の指紋などが残っており、衛生面に若干欠けるように感じた。

Reviewed Apr 7, 2026全体が清潔で、ロケーションも中心街から近く、ベッドにもカーテン、照明、コンセント、小物置き場が備わっていてプライバシーも守られていてよかった。さらにベッドの目の前に棚があり、鍵をかけられる収納とは別で荷物置きに使えるのもよかった。ベッドの寝心地もよかった。キッチンにあるコーヒー紅茶などのドリンクや、スパイス、パスタまでもがフリーで驚いた！！

Reviewed Mar 26, 2026The beds were comfortable, the bathroom clean, spacious, hot water with good pressure and nice heating lamps. We didn't use the kitchen but it looked well equipped and clean.
The lounge and kitchen were stuffy and need way better ventilation. The rooms have windows but could use better ventilation too.

Reviewed Mar 25, 2026The attitude of the staff really set this hostel apart from other places I’ve stayed whilst travelling in New Zealand. The kitchen was chock full of different pastas, cooking oil, herbs and spices, coffee tea and sugar. Yesterday there was even multiple packets of different bread rolls laid out on the tables with signs that said please help yourself. I’ve never seen so much generosity from a hostel that I’ve stayed in ever and I travel a lot. Even though I stayed in a 10 bed dorm, the way the bunks were positioned made it feel like there was more space. Each bed had power and a shelf and a lamp. The beds were really comfortable and even the colour of the linen made the place feel light and airy . Full marks to the staff there, especially James who was so sweet and always remembered my name when he saw me, he was never in a hurry and he always had time for a chat.
To be honest, the amount of heavy doors made it hard for me because of the condition of my wrists but that doesn’t mean that it was a bad thing. The toilets really were a little bit too far away from my room but again that’s not a dealbreaker.

Parking was a bit of a pain as it ended up being quite expensive, but it’s expected to be difficult in a city centre

Reviewed Mar 15, 2026The hostel was great, staff were really friendly and the place was nice and sociable. It was also in a good location within walking distance to the shops/sights etc. Facilities were clean and we appreciated the laundry service.
Kitchen was quite small and we were unlucky with the people we had in our dorms (snorers each night) but that’s not the hostels fault. Next time we would probably opt for the pod dorm rather than the basic one.

Nous avions une chambre à 4 lits cabines très confortables qui préservent l'intimité et offrent un bel espace. Le système de rangement est ingénieux et pratique. De plus, il peut se sécuriser avec un cadenas. Situé en plein centre de Dunedin, à proximité des commerces et restaurants. Néanmoins, nous avons passé des nuits au calme. Pour qui ne cherche pas le luxe, c'est une excellente adresse.
