All good. Very nice hostel

We originally booked a room with a shared bathroom but asked to upgrade to one with a private bathroom at check-in. The owner was very kind to offer us the upgrade at no cost. Other than that, the location was very convenient, and the bed was very comfortable.

The floors in our room and the bathroom were sagging so it was a bit uneven.

Clean, helpful staff, good food and coffee downstairs.

We booked a private room and had a great experience! The room was very clean, and the bed came equipped with a heating pad, which was a fantastic feature for staying warm during the cold nights. The shared bathrooms and showers were consistently spotless and thoroughly cleaned every single day. The staff was super friendly and helpful throughout our stay, and the hostel's location was excellent. Highly recommended!

The hostel reminded me a lot of a homestay, it was lovely and social without being too loud. The couple who owned it were unbelievably lovely and cooked us an amazing Korean meal when we ate in one night. They also had two adorable kids who were fun to play with and made the stay even more enjoyable. One of my favourite hostels I’ve ever stayed at.

Great hostel right in the ancient town. Location was superb not loud either. Hosts are super friendly and speak really good english. Everything was clean and the food was delicious. I would definitely stay here again.

When entering, you really feel the mountains atmosphere. It looks like you are in the small tavern up in the mountains with no cities around. Really liked the atmosphere! Everything is great and there are even heated mattresses for the cold night! Really a great place to stay when visiting Shangri-La!

És un hostal petit en una casa de fusta tradicional. Té una sala comuna amb una estufa molt acollidora que a.la.vegada fa de bar/restaurant. La calefacció de l'habitació era excel·lent i el llit súper còmode. La dutxa aigua calenta i pressioyperfecte. Però el millor sens dubte: sentir-se acoçlit a una casa de gent meravellosa.

This is hands down the best backpacking hostel! The environment is so lively and full of positive energy, making it easy to connect with other travelers. The owners are incredibly supportive and make you feel right at home. On top of that, the food they serve is delicious and very affordable — a huge bonus for backpackers. A perfect mix of comfort, community, and great value!

The owners are lovely! They can help you with most of your further adventures - especially any trekking you might be considering. The vibe is warm, cosy and friendly. Clean bathrooms and dorms, even the food was pretty decent with a good price. Highly recommend staying here. The owner even helped us with accommodation, when we had forgotten of book an extra night and everything cheap in town was full!

Lovely little place with bar and gorgeous big bed and heater - a home from home. Great food and super helpful lady who runs it. Amazing location, too, right on the edge of the old town and near the dancing square if that floats your boat... Everything you want from a proper hostel in China.

The single bedrooms are very comfortable. The owner and the staff are also very welcoming and helpful.

The owners took very good care of everyone, ensuring everyone was well fed and had good ideas for their trips around Shangri-la. They even upgraded the toilets to ensure the guests' needs were met. We had many great conversations about hiking, trekking, and which were the best places to hike in Yunnan, conversations which would not have been possible without the wealth of experience the owners had.

Super cozy place, both the private room and dorms (tried both). In a quiet alley in the old town, serves good and fairly priced food and most of all very accommodating owners - helping and giving advice and also really nice to just talk with them. Would always book here when I’m in Shangri La.

Very friendly staff, welcoming. They assisted in everything and even send me my forgotten items. I like the location and the rooms too! They offer a variety of breakfast and lunch. Great for kids too!

I felt right at home here! The location’s perfect—inside the old town, so you can walk around. The host was super friendly and helpful; she even booked a great tour to Balagezong for me. I also loved the dorm bed—it had a heated mattress, so I slept really well during my 2-night stay. Would totally stay again!

The hair dryer is near the dorm beds, so I felt a bit uncomfortable using it early in the morning (around 6am). I was worried it might wake someone up.

Christina was really nice and she is everywhere !: she gave lots of advices about things to do in Shangri la, she cooked, she helped doing our laundry, she fixed the sink. Her family and her were friendly and introduced backpackers/foreign tourists between them. Location was great, next to the dancing place but in a quiet street. Clean and warm place to stay, thank you so much

From the first time I loved this place. The atmosphere is so friendly here, that I could feel like with the good friends. The owners are friendly and very helpful. And speak English. Comfortable beds, warm duvets, electric blankets. Clean bathrooms. Washing machine and place to dry the clothes on the terrace. Delicious food (vegan options too). Travelers from over the world. And very good location.Highly recommend!

Common areas, room and communal toilets were very clean. Host was very generous and helpful. Centrally located. It was perfect. Lots of travellers who speak English 😁

The lady working there was very helpful with info, train tickey, etc. The place is clean amd has a reeto as well with good food and cheap beer. It's very near the old town. The wifi is ok too.

The heating system was in the metress of the bed. Which was strange for me and I couldn't adopt with it and couldn't sleep much.

Tavern hostel is just amazing, from the owners to the food to the location . They speak a really good English and they give you all the informations you need! I booked with them the hike to Abuji Lake (was amazing ) and he booked for me the bus to Lijiang ! Loved the food there, I also tried a Korean dish and the best coffee I ever tried in China! So highly recommended!!!! Thank you guys !! I hope to see you again !

The lady running the hostel is so kind and helpful and speaks excellent English. The breakfast is fresh and home cooked. Clean property and every bed has electric blankets. Really recommend to anyone staying in Shangri-La!

Went for one night, ended up with 3 nights. Can highly recommend staying with this Korean/Chinese family. The food is amazing and everyone working is so friendly! If one day I get the chance to return to Shangri-la, I'll definitely stay here again.

The whole environment was local style. But Very bad staying for me and it’s my first time to be in Shangri-la, it destroyed my first expression to this nice city. The female host kept mentioning that my 6-female bedroom booking was very cheap, at least three times she mentioned this “cheap” price for my booking. I know it’s cheap but why kept saying this every time. The first time she mentioned this shared bedroom “cheap price” was when I was doing my check in. She said this price little profit and really cheap. Second time when I asked her about the shampoo and she said no offer for this shared room so I paid 3 yuan for it, ok never mind cos my booking no mention shampoo. And she enhanced this shared bedroom was very cheap so no offer shampoo. The third time, she never mentioned I can use the locker in the room until I asked her why I didn’t have a key for this locker even there’s a deposit needed for it, and other roommates have the keys but she never mentioned to me. she said cos I stayed only for a night and price was “cheap” and she “thought “ I wouldn’t need it. Those lockers was supposed for this 6-bedroom service. Anyway I did pay this “cheap “ price and should include this bloody locker. It felt like cos I paid “cheap” price and only one night stay, so I didn’t deserve this. If you can’t offer your service in a proper way why bother to make this bloody “cheap” booking available? It’s really a bad experience I ever had to stay in a hostel especially so many international good comments in booking. Very impressive. By the way, the bed really shaking, I guess it must belong to this “cheap” price.

Was the only hostel in china where I actually met people! Super beautiful tiles in the bathroom (which is unimportant but still want to mention). Staff is super nice and helpful. Beautiful old town house.

This is an amazing hostel. Christy and her husband speak perfect english and the food is to die for. I wish I could have taken a lifetimes worth of her homemade Kimchi back with me to Australia. Also the coffee she makes is superb.

The rustic warmth of a homestay. Proximity to the vibrant night square where folk dancing is enjoyed every night.Lots of eateries nearby as well but the hosts also runs a small kitchen and you can get yummy food too.

Very authentic hostel with very nice owners and travelers! Owners speak great English and if you need help they can provide assistance, like organise a tour for you and etc. They also have a restaurant so you can get food directly at the hostel. Liked by foreigners - made quite a few friends in the downstairs restaurant! :) Also the location is great, just on the end of the ancient town.

The thing I really didn't like was that there was no soap in the toilets. All rooms share the same two toilets and so having no soap to wash your hands after is very unsanitary. And it's also one of those things which you forget to bring to the toilet every time you need to use it - in my stay in China I didn't have this problem in any other hostel. I understand about shower toiletries but I feel basics like soap should be available in the shared toilets. Not necessarily a minus for me but the beds don't have any curtains or anything, so if you like some privacy you won't get it here. I really didn't mind it myself but in case it is useful to know for anyone else. :)

The host helped me with organising and booking tours and the departure in the end. Even for booking a scooter. They were always friendly and supportive. The location is great since you can easily walk everywhere in the old town.

In fact I extended my stay few more days. Jun and wife were helpful and certainly the yak 🍔, so gooood. Thanks again for such a great time here. Wish I could stay longer. I'm not finish with Shangri-la, my next trip. And wish you all well.

Building is quite the old. Noise is easily heard especially at night time. If the hotel renovated, even better!

I had a lovely stay at the Tavern. The owners were very nice and helpful. They can help arrange some hiking tours and can rent an electric scooter there too! I met really cool people, which was a bonus! The children (twins!) of the owner are angels.
