Reviewed Jun 21, 2026It was very clean and the scenery was beautiful. It was just the right size for the two of us. I’d say this would be amazing on a sunny day as there are plenty spaces to sit down outside and relax. It’s very peaceful and we would definitely stay again.
The only small suggestion is that it would be nice to have milk in the fridge for tea in the morning.

Reviewed May 13, 2026Fantastiskt hus som ligger ovanpå en damm. Mycket charmigt inrett och stor altan med grill o stolar etc. Vädret passade inte denna gång för sitta där för oss.
Sängarna på Irland är ju oftast inte 180 cm breda och denna var kanske inte ens 160 cm. men bekväm ändå.

Reviewed May 4, 2026We had a fantastic stay. The cabin is cosy, well‑priced, and set in beautifully quiet surroundings, yet still close to town. Waking up to the sounds of nature was such a treat. The cabin was spotless, warm, and well equipped with WiFi, a Nespresso machine, ect, and secure parking. Explored the nearby Derryounce Lakes & Walkways and the River Barrow Walk — both stunning spots for peaceful strolls and taking in the scenery. The location is ideal if you want nature on your doorstep while still being close to Portlaoise and Portarlington. We’ll definitely be back.

Host was very helpful and understanding when we arrived late. Would definately recommend and will be coming back!

Reviewed Nov 19, 2025Herons den was cozy, comfortable & clean! Not only did it have everything I needed for my stay but it also had the most beautiful location. Waking up to the shy moorhens feeding on the pond was my favourite part and enjoying my coffee in the morning. 10/10 would recommend!

It was lovely and peaceful and felt secluded even though it was relatively close to the other accommodation. We loved the many windows, the views of the birds on the pond and the multiple options to sit outside. It was comfortable and well appointed - the perfect stay for a couple of nights to explore the area. I would definitely recommend.

Reviewed Jun 19, 2025The location is so nice, the nature, the experience of sleeping with the door open & waking up to the ducks quietly moving around the pond as the sun breaks in the window. The Den has everything you could need to make your stay as cosy & isolated away from the fuss of a normal day.
I wish I had got there earlier on my check in & left later this morning. I got to sit over the pond, coffee & laptop and a beautiful sunrise, it doesn't get much simpler & nicer than this place.

Reviewed May 28, 2025Everything ! Great location , less than a 5 min drive from the main town, so very convenient 😀 The location is tranquil. The cabin is located within an organic farm and nursery. So it gives a very beautiful natural space . The cabin is built over a pond that gives home to some lovely local wildlife, including moorhens and duck . 3 different decking and out spaces available from the cabin , so you can follow the sun or the shade , choices of outdoor seating in all three areas. The cabin was well kitted out with kitchenware, towels , toiletries, cleaning products etc... Very clean and comfortable. Complementary bottle of wine and chocolates on arrival . Fiona was very responsive and helpful. 5 ⭐️

Reviewed Mar 8, 2025Lovely small cabin built over a pond. Wildlife on either side of the bedroom. The sound of nature in the morning is very refreshing. Very comfortable, clean and peaceful. Perfect place to unwind and relax. Complete with WIFI (if needed) and more importantly, a nice Nespresso Coffee machine. Electric Fire/Heater in the living area and Electric Radiator in the bedroom provide ample heat. Nice, safe and secure parking onsite. Totally recommend for any solo traveler or couple looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of urban environments but yet still be close enough to civilization when required. Nice proximity to Portlaoise and Portarlington.

Reviewed Dec 3, 2024This is a beautiful wee cabin over a pond just outside Portarlington. Gorgeous setting. Had everything we needed for a few days exploring County Laois. Great communication with the host, chocolates and wine on arrival. Perfectly appointed studio with adjoining bathroom / shower. Comfortable sofa bed, warm and cosy. Just a magical spot with birds outside the window in the morning.

Reviewed Oct 7, 2024The location was ideal for me because it's very close to my dear friends' house and because I had to attend an event in Tullamore. The cottage is on a lake, it's quite small but it looks like a doll's house! It's just part of a complex with a manor house, and a large courtyard, perfect for family holidays or events. I only booked the chalet for one night to stay close to my friends' house and I loved it. I would definitely love to come back and stay next year when I see my friends again.

Reviewed Aug 13, 2024The cabin was very comfortable and well equipped. Its location on a pond is very unusual. Fiona was a wonderful hostess. I wouldn't hesitate in booking the Heron's Den at any time in the future.
Probably not being able to bring the car beside the cabin could be a bit of a drawback. It didn't affect us as the weather was dry, but if the weather was wet, it wouldn't be very pleasant going up the walkway to the cabin with luggage etc.
