The Red Shed

The host was really lovely and happily brought us the extra things we asked for. Feeding the alpacas was fun. It is set in a peaceful area, but still fairly close to town.

We didn't expect it to be just one large room with all the beds in the same space as the TV, lounge chairs, dining table, pool table and kitchenette. The only separate room was the bathroom. We rearranged things a bit eg to put someone who snored at the far end, and to make the furniture gather around the coffee table. It would have been good to have more light in the kitchenette and more bench space or pantry space. Even though there was a hotplate and some pots there were no serving dishes and very few extra utensils, so it was too hard to cook any meals.

The Red Shed has everything, a few included food and drink items were a nice touch. The property was spacious and comfortable. Feeding the Alpacas was a nice surprise.

Maria is an exceptional host. She is so warm and inviting and the red shed was exactly that. It's a very nice space and she has thought of everything. Highly recommend!

The location felt safe and the property was lovely! Large open concept warehouse type room, which our kids thought was so fun 😊 and the breakfast being included and already prepped in the room was very handy! It was only a 15-20 minute drive to Hobbiton Movie Set Tour which was the main reason we picked this spot 👍🏻

Great open plan family space. Highlights are the Continental breakfast, powerful shower, excellent TV, 2 heat pumps, pool table and definitely feeding Victor, Hugo and Ernesto the alpacas.

The Red Shed was comfy, warm, and cozy. It was much more pleasant than I expected. Getting to feed the alpacas was a highlight as were the goodies provided. Another plus was the billiards table that occupied my son.

It’s a great big shed, nothing was unpleasant. But if you don’t like sleeping in a communal room, it isn’t for you.

Perfect stay for families with kids! Whānau loved it!!

The host Maria is very nice and prepared bread, muffins, milk, juice and varieties of bread spread for us. We are family of 5 with 3 teenage boys. They love the Alpaca and Sheep right at our backyard, the host provided some feed for the boys to feed the animals and was a great experience. The pool table in the apartment was a good idea and our family loved playing it everyday. The location is quiet and very near a small town with supermarket and some eateries, MCD etc.. very near Hobbiton and all the beautiful scenic views.

Clean very practical stay. Near to Hobbiton, to the town and most of all lovely owner. Breakfast was great with muffin served. The kids loved it. Farm animals and pool table also the highlight for our stay. The neighbourhood very clam.

Amazing hosts!!! Was looking for an emergency accom around midnight. Maria easily picked up my phone call and was able to accommodate at such late notice, even better after midnight!!! Super accomodating and even better she had breakfast prepared for the next day! 100% recommend

Very friendly host. Went out of her way to give my kids some pellets to feed their animals. Huge grassy park right next to the home for kids to run around in. The room itself if very large including a well stocked kitchen. Very quiet at night but only a couple minutes drive to the town center.

The Host Maria, gave us a lovely warm welcome ,our stay was most enjoyable & our daughter really enjoyed feeding the Alpacas. Added bonus having a dog friendly park right next door.We will definitely be back.🙂

Great location with great facilities. My teenage boys particularly loved the pool table. The breakfast supplies provided were delicious! Perfect place to stay the night either before or after a trip to Hobbiton. Lovely neighbours too! It would have been lovely to stay longer!

There’s nothing bad to say about this place! If you were staying more than one night with teenagers, having the one big room could be awkward, but that’s really dependent on the family rather than the accommodation.

Located in a small town, very quiet and safe. We loved the billard pool and the animals in the back as it kept my niece entertained. The host is such a lovely person. We got pavola, little cupcakes and bread, even a carton of juice. All we needed was there when we arrived on Christmas day.

It was a fantastic facility with a very welcoming host. Everything was clean and comfortable and we enjoyed feeding the alpacas and playing pool.

Thank you Maria for your kindness when my family came to stay. The accommodation was immaculate, there was plenty of room for everyone. Feeding the animals was a huge bonus for my grandchildren, we even had to feed them just before we were leaving. I highly recommend staying at The Red Shed.

They’re wasn’t anything that we didn’t like.

Kids loved feeding alpacas. The location was great, close to the Hobbiton Movie set.

The accommodation didn't have separate rooms, it's just a huge one big space. Feels dark inside even with blinds open, maybe due to the colour of the interiors. The floors were dirty, even the host came inside in her outside shoes. Bring your slippers, don't walk barefoot nor in socks. The fruit bowl was with old wrinkle fruits, better don't put any if they were in that condition.

Exactly what we needed after a long trip , place felt warm and welcoming , Maria was amazing very hospitable and tended to our needs of checking in earlier than planned. Close to everything and more than enough space for a family , breaky and kids games were a hit and the farm life is everything these ipad kids needed .

This was a wonderful option for staying in the Matamata area. It's very conveniently located, with comfortable accommodation for the whole family. There's a pool table that the kids enjoyed playing with. The friendly hosts provided some breakfast food options and have alpacas out back that we could feed. We didn't stay for very long but it was great.

This isn't a negative point really, but the place is one big open room (apart from the bathroom). It's just a bit strange.

From the moment we arrived, the Red Shed was amazing! The location can’t be beat. It was incredibly quiet with the sound of birds in the morning being the only sound we heard all night long, and yet it was 5 minutes drive to Matamata to get some food and supplies. The place was large and had lots of amenities including a kitchenette, pool table, games, and a TV with streaming services. I don’t describe hotels as “spotless” too often but that is the best word for this place. Maria was absolutely lovely, offering to help at any time if something went awry. And of course, the alpacas and sheep were an excellent addition to the staff!

Loved the hospitality, made us feel so comfortable!

Maria was an amazing host. Great with communication. Our flight was delayed and we didn’t get in until 1am. I let Maria know and she turned the heat and lights on for us so it was super cosy and toasty on arrival. We are a family of 2A & 5K and there was heaps of room. Beds were super comfy. Pool table was a hit with all of us. Alpacas and sheep feeding was also a big hit. Supplied breakfast was great and if you want anything more substantial town is not far away at all. It is in such a beautiful area. Kids were disappointed that we weren’t staying longer. We will be back.

Our family of four stayed for two nights to attend the Hobbiton Banquet and had a lovely stay with Maria. The accommodation is spotlessly clean, has a spacious living area and lovely beds. There is really everything you need for a comfortable stay and Maria is very warm and welcoming. The little extras like yoghurt, muffins and bread were much appreciated and our teen kids loved feeding the alpacas each morning and playing pool of an evening. Maria also offers transportation to and from Hobbiton which meant that we could all relax and enjoy a drink at the banquet. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

A washing machine and dryer are always appreciated when travelling with a family.

We loved the cosy atmosphere. As a group of 7, we loved the sleepover feel! The beds were amazing and comfortable! Very toasty, warm, and amazing amenities! It was a family favourite! Seeing the alpacas in the backyard was lovely! Maria, our host, was fantastic and kind and was available if we needed her! If we ever come back, we will come back to stay here!

The oven you can only either use the top stove or the oven not at the same time. But it wasn't a huge deal.

The host was absolutely lovely, with a perfectly timed introduction she offered a warm welcome & a bowl of pellets for us to feed the animals at some point during our stay. The area had a very nice rural feel yet only a couple minutes from town centre. The space was super comfortable, warm and spacious. With the special extras like toiletries in the bathroom, some helpful and appreciated goodies supplied in the perfectly stocked and set out kitchen like bread, spreads, cupcakes, coffee etc.. w/ plenty of milk, juice, yoghurts for the kiddies, a cot/high chair for the baby, it was not only incredibly accomodating but felt like a real home away from home. Had EVERYTHING we needed and catered to not only my 16 year old but my 1 year old perfectly. Beds were incredibly comfortable and there was a great deal of spare blankets which was also really appreciated. Check in and parking was easy peezy. The pool table was a bonus and meeting/feeding the animals was the cherry on the top. Really enjoyed our stay!!!

It was very spacious and homely. We felt very welcomed, we had more privacy here then at other motels. We would definitely come back again.

Nothing comes to mind

It was just one old big shed,, the only separation was for the shower and toilet area. The kitchen area was basic and in need of modernisation, the painted floor was chipped and needed repainting. The sofa didn’t smell clean. The fridge was dirty The only people I think this would suit is a boisterous young family as there is a double bed and 2 singles that we saw, along with a pool table. Even though it seemed like a quiet residential area we were warned by the owner the field next to it was frequently used by the local children and we shouldn’t worry about the noise and the motorbikes. We actually didn’t stay even though we had paid

Staying at the red shed with my 5 children and I was so relaxing. We felt so comfortable the beds were great, our host Maria was the best and went above and beyond helping us with washing, advice for our stay and any food or items we needed. We absolutely loved our stay while also visiting the Hobbiton and going to the pools. Thank you for a wonderful family friendly stay in New Zealand. We highly recommend this accommodation. 💖

Nothing it was a great place and close drive to town. Maria is a lovely hostess. We were left to our own to relax but knew she was there if we needed anything. It was also a last minute booking. She quickly got it sorted for us and we went early.

Maria is a beautiful, accommodating host, who really went above and beyond for our stay. A gorgeous continental breakfast was waiting for us, with some extra goodies for the kids. Maria even provided us with food for their friendly alpacas so the kids could feed them - which they absolutely loved. The accommodation itself was spacious, clean, really comfortable, with games and pool table; great for our teens. The beds were super comfortable and warm, and there was plenty of room for our family of 9 to sit and eat. This was the perfect stay for our stop-over to visit Hobbiton, and we are so grateful to Maria for her gorgeous hospitality.

Our daughter, her partner and their five boys stayed a night at the Red Shed while down from Auckland for a party. They loved the spacious room, the comfortable beds and couches, the pool table, TV and games. Dad enjoyed the seeded bread. They enjoyed feeding the alpacas with host Maria, who was lovely in her communication with me and the family.

Alpacas!

We liked the open plan with a nice kitchen and a separate bathroom. There were lots of games for kids to play, including a pool table. Our host was lovely, she brought some food so kids could feed the farm animals. She also made delicious muffins and had breakfast treats ready for us in the kitchen. We also enjoyed later check out.

Very cool place. It is spacious and a nice experience for a family who wnat to stay together in one large entrior. The owner is very nice and extremely helpful. Cool perks for families- - A pool table. - Large picnic type table on the center of the space. - Kitchen with most thongs needed, what ever is missing the lovely owner helps out and provides. - The who as I said is very nice, respects privacy bit is actually available for anything needed even late at night. - We loved the small farm with the Llamas Victor and Hugo, the two large sheep and the older award winning Llama (Don't remember his name), can be fed and pet by the kids. The owner provides the food. The location of the shed is great just near town and the neighborhood is high quality homes. O wne t out for a sunset run that was beautiful and I felt very safe. Great place to stay and good experience.

Washing machine can be a plus

We arrived to a spotless house, with some lovely extras like bread, cupcakes, fruit, yoghurt, milk and juice. The space is perfect for a family or group of friends. The kids were so excited by the pool table and the huge, comfy sofas! Once we'd settled in, Maria popped over to say hello and give us some nuts for the gorgeous alpacas and sheep. We felt so welcome. The shower is big, water is hot, and we felt very safe and comfortable in the Red Shed. Thank you!

A lovely, warm, and hospitable host (Maria). Maria introduced herself to us on arrival and made us feel very welcome. The accommodation was very spacious and clean. Everything we needed was there. Comfortable beds. And having the late 12pm check-out time was also a bonus. Thanks Maria😊

Nice clean and quiet place. Has everything we need in the room. Netflix is cool and close the downtown. 24hrs hot water and the shower is strong. Blowing table in in the room, kids were having fun when it is raining and cold out side.
