De bedden zijn oud en fragiel, instructie: "no rough activities on this bed". Het was boven erg warm, ondanks de airco en de vele fans. En de badkamer mag wel wat luxer, voor deze prijs.
Beautiful heritage house in very central location in old town. Helpful host, clear instructions. Super comfy mattrsses. We enjoyed our stay.
Maybe not for everyone if you have mobility issues or kids...it is heritage and needs careful use, with original steep stairs. Lots of signage let's you know to take care.
We really loved the place! It looks amazing, is super comfortable, and very centrally located. The owner is also really friendly and helpful, we’d definitely recommend it!
Nothing!

Amazing heritage home within easy walking distance of the many Georgetown attractions and food experiences. Thanks to Johan for such a welcome, with clear and friendly communication.
Nothing.
The Gaslight Heritage Residence truly lives up to its name! It's like stepping into a live museum where you can genuinely feel the history all around you, from the exquisite decor to the fascinating stories of the place. Despite its historical feel, it's also wonderfully warm and inviting, with cozy spaces that made our stay incredibly comfortable. Our family absolutely loved everything about it – the beauty and historical charm were truly captivating. Highly recommend!
Just a note for future guests: the main bedroom can be a bit noisy at night due to vehicle sounds. However, the smaller bedroom offers a much quieter alternative, ensuring a restful night's sleep for those who need it. Overall, a fantastic and memorable experience!"
Loved the vibe of the place, the heritage aspects are really highlighted. Having a space for the whole family was excellent and much better than booking a hotel room. Location was great with excellent roti available in Jalan Argyll, laundromat close by and only a short walk to Red Garden, Chulia Street and Komtar, Prangin and 1st Ave shopping centres.
The mat in the lounge room is quite rough under foot. My husband is a bigger man and so we were a bit nervous that some of the furniture may not hold his weight, given the heritage aspects. A larger fridge would have been good to store multiple bottles.
Location was great. The property was stunning. The communication from the host was perfect, speedy responses and happy to provide tips on the local area. The area felt very safe to walk around at night. I can’t fault the stay!
Nothing
Tastefully decorated and situated in the centre of old town. The place can easily access to many tourist attractions, literally next to Jalan Penang. Interesting vintage shops and convenience stores are all within walkable distance.
Groups with elders pls take note - Unfortunately, there’s no bathroom in the sleep quarter (level 2), both of the bathrooms and toilets are located at ground floor. It’s a hassle waking up in the middle of the night, wanting to use bathroom for the elders. Also, the staircase is rather steep in these old houses, do be careful.
All the decorations are so authentic and classic. Enjoy the vibe in the house.
The furniture is so aging so need to pay extra attention.
My family and I had an incredible stay at The Gaslight Heritage Residence in Georgetown, Penang, from 25 to 28 January, 2025. Our host, Jóhan, was fantastic—he responded super quickly to all my messages and requests, which made everything so much easier. The heritage house is incredibly charming and beautifully restored. Don’t miss the outdoor bathroom—it’s a delight to take a shower in the spacious wooden tub! The residence is also very comfortable and conveniently located near shops, restaurants, and a laundromat. Just a heads up for anyone with mobility issues: there’s a steep flight of stairs to reach the first floor, and there’s no toilet up there. So, if you’re elderly or have trouble walking, keep this in mind. Overall, we had a wonderful time, and I would definitely recommend The Gaslight Heritage Residence for a unique stay in Georgetown. Thank you, Jóhan, for being such a great host! We can’t wait to come back!
There was absolutely nothing we didn't like about our stay.

an amazing house of history. as loved our stay thank you for sharing your family home with us
nothing what a special experience
Everything :) - location was convenient but still quiet enough in both the day and the night. Well and accurately furnished (my mum used to stay in her grandma’s place and she said everything reminded of her childhood).
There were mozzies. Best to provide more mozzie coils and lighters.
The house ambiance is really great and reminded me of my childhood spent in Penang's old British quarters. The decor and theme set the mood of old Penang—the bygone days and the mix of cultures from different races living together which is great feature of Malaysia. I would definitely suggest this to foreigners visiting Penang so they can relive the same experience.
Finding parking can be a chore during school holidays weeks and weekend, but that is typical for anywhere in Penang town isnt it!
I loved the location, size of the unit, cleanliness and response from host. There were 3 in 1s and filtered water provided. That was nice.
All rooms were on an upper level. To get to the rooms, it was a steep stairway with high steps. What was disappointing was that there were no toilets where the rooms were. So, in the middle of the night or anytime throughout the day when you were on the upper level, you will need to take the steep flight of steps down the dimly lit stairway to the toilet. Definitely not suitable for older, disabled or people with difficulties in walking up/down steep steps (like those in shophouses)
I not stay
Not good
Location is awesome. Not that crowded, quiet in the night. Very close to Jalan Sri Bahari, full of awesome food. House is incredible huge and clean.
Nothing
A charming Straits eclectic shop house with lots of thoughtful personal touches. Truly feels like you’re given the privilege to stay at a beloved grandmother’s home. On top of that, Johan & Hazel were wonderful hosts and very accommodating. We would come back just for the coffee.
No bathroom upstairs, which is a bit hard for old people with bad knees, like me and my husband. Having said that, the wooden tub is worth the climb down.
Lovely home for family. Spacious and we impress with the antique furniture. Located in the center of George town and easy access to many cafe and famous mamak restaurants. The public parking just in front of the property for 6MYR a day during weekdays and free on Sunday. We had our wonderful stay. The owner, Mr. Johan is contactable and helpful.
The picture in master bedroom
I feel like back to the 60 where the interior and ambience are so nice.
The cons are the bathroom shower abit slow due to sharing water piping.
