Conveniently located for our needs
The food was fine, but quite a few of the menu items were unavailable
Room was clean, Ale was very good
Would not recommend the food
Good breakfast and room were cozy and warm
Old and very uncomfortable mattress and the rooms aren't very sound proof
Great location and lovely rooms for the cost
Food was excellent including a good choice of breakfasts. Staff very helpful and friendly.
Room was a bit cramped and slightly damp smelling. Some cobwebs on the windows. But we did have a very good night’s sleep.
Great location
Clean linen
We booked a stay at The Black Swan Inn and paid £219 for two nights excluding food Booking.com stated the check out time was 11am and dinner could be had up to 8.30pm on and evening On arrival we were asked 'yes, what can I do for you!' by the most miserable grumpy dark haired woman who gave us a worse welcome than a chronic heart attack! I told her we had a booking and she checked. She said said , 'ah yes, your a booking dot com' - is there a difference? I asked about the breakfast and she said it would be £13.50 for hot and cold breakfast. I asked if my wife could have tea and toast and she said it would be £13.50 as well. She was the most unhelpful, awkward front of house staff I think I have ever met. I asked about dinner and she said the restaurant closed at 7.30 pm yet the paperwork said 8.30 pm. I asked about checkout and she said 10am yet booking.com paperwork and the hotels own paperwork said 11am. I pointed out she would be popular and she said speak to someone else later. I checked us in and went to the room. Now, bear in mind this is supposed to be a 4star establishment. The room was no better than 2 star at best. A totally run down rip off next to a caravan site - I took photographs of the room condition for proof. chipped drawers, ceiling, sink, bathroom units. Shower mould. Even the extractor did not work! The wifi was atrocious bordering on useless. I called into the bar and asked the only bar staff there about it and he said keep trying. Whilst I was there someone else was complaining about the wifi and advising how to fix the problem the barman took no notice. Given the disgusting unwelcoming attitude of the venue staff and the utterly run down state of the pokey little box room 10 we had we decided not to stay in for any meals and to go out for all meals On return the on the Sunday the cleaners had been in but left the door unlocked!
The rooms are modern and well done, with plenty of space. Good range of beer and wine. Dinner was good and reasonably priced. Breakfast had choices but we all had full English (Yorkshire) breakfast, and a choice from a buffet of fruit, yoghurt, cereal etc.
Because of the location in the country, network access is patchy, but that could be an advantage, given the surrounding pleasant rolling-hill scenery.
Very unhelpful staff. Rude, and did not respond regarding a reimbursement for a second night when forced to cancel due to work commitments. Also a remote location, not as advertised in photos.
The location in a beautiful quiet village in the Yorkshire Dales provides stunning views from the beer garden. The staff were very friendly, the food was excellent and the pub provides a good range of beers from the Theakstone and Black Sheep breweries from nearby Masham.
Nothing comes to mind.
Location and room size
Small single bed
The location, staff, cleanliness, breakfast was excellent. It’s a great place to stay! The bar looked really cosy when we checked in (didn’t use it as we were at a hen party at a different place) I also lost a ring of mine that was quite valuable. The staff found it and it was quite promptly returned to me x. Thanks Sean and the team I am eternally grateful
Nothing comes to mind
The location was excellent. Beautiful scenery.
Very basic room. Rated as luxury but wasn't
Friendly staff and gorgeous food!
Great location for our trip
Bar restaurant area had strong smell of bleach - quite off putting if you are eating. Shower in room was missing a door!!
Great location, lovely pub and some other good ones nearby, supermarket just down the road. Shower was fab
Nothing
Set in a stunning village with amazing views. Nice walk to nearby Masham. The room was very clean. Friendly staff and good pub food.
The room was a little basic for the price, and breakfast wasn’t included, but we booked last minute so imagine it would be cheaper in advance.
Friendly people, clean room etc, food gorgeous.
The huge room and exceptionally comfy bed, the beautiful view, the lovely staff, the tasty meals and good, local beer in a cosy oub and beer garden. It is in the heart of glorious Yorkshire countryside, waterfalls, quaint villages, historical places of interest, gardens and stuff for families with kids, too. A very pleasant stay and will return again.
Dramatic. quiet location. Seating indoors and outdoors. Large, clean, comfortable room with underfloor heating if required, Good restaurant and good breakfast.
The staff were good, location was good.

The veiw
Noise from other guests in next room could hear conversations.
Firstly, the convenience and availability to book so last minute and arrive at a time quite, but met with great care and service is greatly appreciated. Room was way lovelier than anticipated - it is as a shame I was not able to stay longer for myself! Cleanliness and facilities were of expected and satisfactory standard. There was a jacuzzi tub in the room but out of order, yet I definitely didn't know there would be one so will find an excuse to stay again when it is in order. Food was great and reasonably priced for the area. Checking out was also met with great care and service, making the overall stay beyond what I could have anticipated for such a last minute booking. Many thanks indeed!
I didn't like that I left with nothing bad to say 😅?
Friendly staff, delicious breakfast, free buffet whilst watching the football was a lovely bonus!
Nothing to criticise
Great hotel in the countryside. Awesome staff. A nice pub too.
The evening meal was very poor and well below the standard expected. Based on this, we did not have breakfast at the premises
The evening meal. This was poor. The bar area looked run down and in need of smartening up
Rien
Une chambre très sale située à l'arrière de l'établissement, comme dans une sorte de cagobi transformé en chambre. Un personnel indifférent à nos remarques, manque de professionnalisme du début à la fin.
Great people, great food, great accommodation, over very pleased.
Greater beer selection
Location
Very basic no fan bed unexceptable bed springs coming through . Outside appearance scruffy
Had an enjoyable evening meal and breakfast the following morning was very tasty. The room was well appointed clean comfortable and very spacious. Wonderful views
The guttering above our room was broken and during the constant downpours that we experienced we had water cascading noisily past our window.
Everything!!!!
Nothing at all
Location
Expensive for what we had - room looking a bit tired. No hot water in the late evening.
Large room, good parking, friendly staff, food smelled good, although we didn't eat
No door on toilet for some unknown reason, and got to leave key in door, or the open keyhole faces direct to bed!
Lovely room. Very comfortable and clean. Shower was accessible and welcomed the rubber mat to avoid slipping. Room to put everything and bedside sockets. Set in a beautiful village with great views.
Service was friendly although they were unexpectedly short staffed on the day we were there. Food was good but not amazing in the evening. Breakfast was really well cooked and good quality bacon and sausages. Would have been nice to have been offered more coffee and toast - it would feel generous at little extra cost. I'm sure it would have been available if we asked.
Very friendly staff and accommodation perfect
Breakfast was great, nice selection.
No sockets near the beds made it difficult to charge phones by the bed. Dinner in pub was reasonable, standard pub food.
Food was really good . Helpful staff in providing extra duvet to help with uncomfortable bed.
Bed was really uncomfortable. You could feel the springs.
Great location and views, spacious room and really good food.
Just had a fabulous stay at the black Swan, staff on arrival were excellent throughout. Food was extremely good and breakfast the next morning was top notch. The room was very good and very clean and the view across the valley was really good. We will definitely be coming back for another stay.
Quiet location. Great views. Nice big shower
Very welcoming on our arrival and we were shown to our room by a lovely lady. The bar has a good selection of drinks and the dinner menu was comprehensive (something for everyone, we think) and the service was excellent. Breakfast was good and filling with a selection of hot and cold foods - again, excelllent service. Car park is big enough, we didn't have any dificulty. NOTE: The coffee at breakfast is worth the stay on its own!
Nothing, it was all great.
Food was excellent, staff friendly, lovely quiet place

Lovely location
Breakfast was a little disappointing with small portions for cooked breakfast
Clean comfortable room, very quiet location. Good food. Attentive and helpful staff.
Bed was a bit old and worn out.
Lovely, cozy pub to sit and relax. Good breakfast.
Restaurant back door wasn’t closing properly - on a windy evening the drafts were quite chilly. Evening meal not exceptional.
The host was an exceptionally friendly and helpful guy. Nothing was too much trouble and he was proper hands on with practically everything, top man. The quality of the evening meal was fantastic, 100% recommend the Beef Shin Pie. Breakfast was equally spot on, locally produced ingredients, one of the best we've ever had at anywhere we've stayed before.
Nothing at all, it was a completely perfect stay for us, ideal.
Staff were always helpful and very friendly. The service was fantastic. Accommodation was lovely. The setting is beautiful. Meals were all very good.
Nothing
excellent evening meal
Location Good clean bed for one night
It’s looking tired and the staff seemed a bit weary too
The property had lovely views. The staff were welcoming and helpful. The breakfast and evening meals were varied and very good. Good power shower but unfortunately seemed to have a leak but told landlord about this.
The bed was uncomfortable. You could feel the springs through the undersheet.
breakfast was very nice
shower cubicle was missing half of its door and bed was uncomfortable
It was the best welcome and check in I’ve ever had and we have stayed at quite a few places Couldn’t do enough and be more welcoming Lovely room and lovely pub very rustic Open fire and quiet location, perfect Breakfast the next morning we were greeted again and exceptional service with lovely food
Comfortable well appointed room and facilities. Evening meal in the restaurant and breakfast were excellent
Good location, nice and spacious room with a view (beautiful sunrise), clean. Helpful staff, pub with good food and selection of local brewery beers. Ample parking space.
Faulty bathtub, after long walk I hoped to have a warm bath.
It is so quiet that we really enjoyed our stay. Staff were nice and professional. Room was very clean and the underfloor heating made it really nice in the cold weather.
The bed was too soft (my own taste here) just to say something as you can see the place is pretty great
Great size room. Great facilities. Friendly staff.
The noise from the plumbing was unacceptable. A real racket at irregular intervals. Roughly every half an hour. Kept me up. Also could not open the windows. So when the underfloor heating finally warmed up it was like an oven. Even after i turned it off.
Everything! Cosy, country pub feel. Lovely Cosy fire, gorgeous views , a warm welcoming pub. Delicious food, dinner and breakfast. Lovely hotel rooms, clean and spacious.

The location is lovely
It wasn’t over clean and not very cosy. V hard bed
There was a lovely atmosphere in the cosy bar in the evening. Enjoyed the wine on offer. Good service. Room was really spacious and water lovely and hot. Despite being on a caravan park it was quiet.
Decor a little tired. Would've been nice to have some shampoo and conditioner in the rooms and some shower gel.
Nice cosy pub, friendly staff. Room was clean & food was nice. Some lovely walks in the surrounding area.
Room was unbearably hot even though the heating was on 0. It was underfloor heating so maybe getting heat from the floor of the room above too but it was too hot to sleep comfortably even though it was cold outside. Bed could do with a new mattress.
Our room ( number 10) was outside the main building & up some steps. It gave the idea that you were on your own away from the noise of the main bar / restaurant. The room had its own entrance & was a relatively nice size & clean .
The bathroom shower had no sliding door on it…. It was supposed to be there , I’m assuming , as there was the sliding rail on the inside of the cubicle… but no door. Which would have been ok, but the shower was that powerful that the water just bounced off you & out of the hole where the door should be, therefore making the floor very wet ! Also only one chair in the room so one person had to sit on the bed. The bed itself was hard & not very comfortable. I don’t think the mattress gets changed as the springs seemed like they wanted to pop out. They made a lot of noise .
The staff make this place. They are so friendly and helpful. They love a chat without it stopping their work. The place is surrounded by gorgeous countryside.
After ringing to say we found walking difficult and could we be downstairs given a room down 5 steps.
A short stop at The Black Swan, our room was of a high standard and spotlessly clean. Greeted by friendly staff on arrival and made to feel welcome. The food in the restaurant was a cut above normal pub fare, very high quality, an imaginative menu and excellent service. The beers are kept well too. We opted for the full cooked breakfast which was lovely as well. Highly recommended and we will no doubt return again.
Location
No door on toilet/bathroom
Good location close to family and town centre.
The unregulated heating system, hairs on bed, cobwebs, broken shower tail, smallest shower head in the world.
Beautiful location, clean, comfortable room, perfect for relaxing after a day exploring! The staff were amazing, so friendly and welcoming, we would definitely stay again. Loved the cozy pub, sat by the fire with a beer. Food was excellent!
Nothing
Comfort and cleanliness. Friendly staff
Large rooms. Comfy bed. Underfloor Heating.
We chose The Black Swan Inn based on its rating, but our stay was unfortunately disappointing. From arrival, the atmosphere felt unwelcoming. Staff interactions were awkward and lacked basic warmth, which made us feel uncomfortable from the outset. We were also pressed to decide on dinner and breakfast immediately, and when we asked for time to settle in first, this seemed to be poorly received. The room itself had cleanliness issues: cups were visibly dirty but cleaned easily in the sink, and there were dead flies above the bed and in the bathroom that had not been removed. The room was advertised as having a bath, yet a sign on arrival stated it could not be used due to flooding downstairs, which should have been disclosed in advance. There was also conflicting information about check-out times — the website stated 11:00am, but we were told 10:00am at the desk. We stayed for dinner and enjoyed the food, however service was inattentive, with long waits and little engagement. We also noticed inconsistent treatment of guests, as another table was offered additional room amenities (tea, milk, coffee) when paying, while we were not. A 20% service charge was automatically added (£10 in our case), which felt excessive given the level of service provided. While we understand staffing pressures in hospitality, basic cleanliness, clear communication, and consistent customer service should still be expected. We both wish we hadn't bothered.
In a perfect location for our fishing trip to Leighton Reservoir. Great service and food was amazing. Staff friendly with a smile.
Nothing, it had all that we needed.
Good breakfast. Book direct as Booking.com does not include so i paid extra. View good but over a caravan park (small) behind pub. But nice and rural. Location v quiet. Nice big room and en suite. Well appointed. A Black Sheep pub, great beer.
Paying extra for breakfast.
great place
Ideal for a family weekend away. Scott was extremely accommodating and we shall return next year!
Everything was great. Room very clean . Lovely old style pub.
Just a few more places to put one's clothes/ towels in the very clean well organised bathroom .
The place was nice clean friendly
The bed was so uncomfortable you could feel the springs in the materess. Main meals a little expensive to be honest and we had to wait 40 mins for our pudding
Comfortable bed in a good sized room Staff very helpful and friendly and dinner was excellent It was a shame we were just on a flying visit
Lovely surroundings great views. Room was well sized, exceptionally clean! Additional pillows supplied in wardrobe. Very quiet. Food was excellent unfortunately due to taking ill had to check out early so was unable to partake in the breakfast:(
WiFi was poor and lack of phone signal in room (not a big issue as is nice to be technology free but in emergencies I was left without family being able to contact me if needed). Room were as clean however lacked cosiness, maybe some pictures hung on walls would take the bareness off the rooms. A fan may be a welcome addition as even without heating on the room was warm!
Food was delicious. Vegetarian options very well catered for.
The weather.
Warm and cosey
Nothing all fantastic
4 nights of wonderful dinners, beautiful views, peace & quiet!! Fantastic inn!!
Great place to stay, big room and was nice and clean. Welcoming friendly staff and great food will definitely stay again
