Reviewed Aug 30, 2026Chilaw is not your usual tourist stomp, we visited for a wedding and it was amazing to experience authentic Sri Lankan culture. The locals are kind and welcoming and excited for you to visit their beautiful coastal town. Spice of Ceylon is absolutely the best hotel in this area, Nishandah the hotel manager is amazing, so welcoming and accommodating but more than that we now consider him a friend. The food at the hotel is home cooked Sri Lankan food at its best but tell them if you can't handle the Spice and they will do everything to accommodate your taste. The rooms face the ocean giving nice breezes through the large and clean rooms. We loved our stay here! Thank you for having us, we look forward to seeing you again! Zoe & Roo

Reviewed Aug 14, 2026Die Unterkunft ist sehr schön und schlicht eingerichtet, sauber, die Zimmer haben Holzböden und sind sehr hoch. Die Menschen, die dort arbeiten, sind sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit. Es kommt auf Wunsch ein ayuvedischer Masseur, der sehr zu empfehlen ist.
Der Strand, der direkt gegenüber des Hotels liegt, lädt nicht zum Verweilen ein, da er sehr verschmutzt ist.

Reviewed May 26, 2026Es hat uns so gut gefallen, dass wir noch weitere 5 Tage geblieben sind . Sehr freundliche Menschen, eine schöne Unterkunft, ein sauberer Pool in einem gepflegten Garten. Es wurde für uns herrlich gekocht und ein gemeinsamer Ausflug war auch möglich. Wir haben uns wohl gefühlt.

Reviewed May 24, 2026Da wir mit dem Fahrrad angereist sind, war die Lage für uns optimal und lag direkt auf unserer Route. Die Zimmer waren sehr groß und komfortabel. Sehr schönes Bad . Die Terrasse vor dem Zimmer mit Blick in den Garten und auf das Meer war malerisch schön. Der Pool war absolut sauber und für uns groß genug. Wir haben uns Abends direkt dort ein typisches Landesessen bestellt, welches geschmacklich und Qualitativ sehr gut war. Ebenso das Frühstück was mit Obst und verschiedenen Rotis usw. mehr als ausreichend war. Klasse fanden wir auch, das es Wasser gekühlt gab und dieses in Glasflaschen und nicht in Plastik serviert wurde. Personal war wirklich freundlich. Wir konnten unsere Fahrräder auf die Terrasse stellen.
Fällt uns nichts ein, würde wieder buchen

Reviewed Apr 27, 2026Lovely clean rooms and hosts are fantastic and always happy to help. The beach is beautiful and still lovely for swimming in the morning. Food was nice.
We did chose accommodation for pool relax before leaving Sri Lanka and unfortunately one day this was being used by local Muslim family with fully dressed women swimming so was not comfortable to swim with swimsuits at the same time. Wifi is not good at this accommodation. With limited use of pool we didn’t think property was good value.

Reviewed Mar 26, 2026We had a hectic two week tour of Sri Lanka and really appreciated spending our last two nights in peace and quiet at Spice of Ceylon. It's a beautiful little seaside hotel in a laid back fishing town - the perfect setting to relax and escape the busyness of the rest of the country. We appreciated that they had a pool as we found the ocean a bit too rough for easy swimming. All the food we ate there was delicious and fresh. The hosts were lovely and helpful and their staff were all so friendly. We really enjoyed talking with them.

Le gérant est aussi très gentil et disponible. Les chambres sont grandes et confortables. La salle de bain est tres bien avec une douche chaude. Les repas et petit-déjeuner sont excellents. La piscine est très appréciable après une journée bien chaude !
Un petit peu loin de la ville mais au pied de la plage. Les propriétaires nous ont appelé des tuktuk à chaque fois que nous en avons eu besoin.

They kindly lent us bikes so that we could explore the local area. The sunsets from the balcony are incredible. We enjoyed dinner at the property on both nights of our stay. Would definitely recommend.

Reviewed Mar 7, 2026Die Zimmer sind sehr geräumig und verfügen über bequeme, große Betten. Der Speisesaal und die Yogahalle sind ebenfalls sehr schön. Alles ist äußerst sauber. Es ist ein sehr schönes Hotel, das nur durch eine Straße vom Strand getrennt ist. Es ist von einem wunderschönen Garten mit Pool umgeben und liegt am Rande eines Dorfes, wo man Sri Lanka noch sehr authentisch erleben kann – weit weg von Tourismus und Lärm. Im Hotel selbst herrscht eine stilvolle, häusliche Atmosphäre. Wir sind dort gestrandet und wurden von den Gastgebern so liebevoll umsorgt, dass es die beste Woche unseres Urlaubs wurde. Aufgrund der ungewissen Rückreisesituation wurde die Reservierung sehr flexibel gehandhabt. Elisabeth und Max gaben uns stets das Gefühl der Sicherheit und standen uns in für uns schwierigen Momenten mit Rat zur Seite. Genauso wurden auch alle anderen Gäste umsorgt. Dafür sind wir ihnen sehr dankbar und würden hoffentlich irgendwann wiederkommen können."

Wir haben hier die schönsten Zimmer unserer Rundreise bekommen. Das ganze Haus war sehr geschmackvoll eingerichtet. Alle Speisen waren fantastisch. Reviewed Feb 26, 2026If you want to chill out with very little to do, this is a great place. Lovely owners and staff, garden and pool. Beech just the other side of the road with lots of friendly fisherman. About a 10 minute ride to Chilaw town where you have a choice of restaurants etc.

Reviewed Feb 8, 2026Worth a visit just to chill and break the journey to Wilpattu for us. Stayed two lovely nights overlooking the ocean, caught up with out admin and laundry. Nice pool. Yes you can swim off their beach over the road. Talk to Max. Bikes available Hosts Max and Elizabeth are very helpful and run a lovely and very relaxed small hotel. Nishanta and all the staff are also extremely helpful. The food is good value and tasty.

Reviewed Aug 17, 2025Die Zimmer waren groß, es gab einen kleinen Kühlschrank im Zimmer und die Betten waren sehr bequem. Außerdem gab es einen Pool, der sehr gepflegt war. Das Essen (von Frühstück bis Abendessen) war ebenfalls sehr gut.
Der Manager hat mich durch das offene Badfenster beobachtet!! Um etwas zu unternehmen brauchte man ein Tuk Tuk und am Strand lag viel Müll (wofür die Unterkunft nicht wirklich was kann).

Reviewed Jul 29, 2025The building itself is beautiful. Well crafted and grand in design. The lawn area at the front of the building was well kept. The balcony had a beautiful view of the ocean, and it was lovely falling asleep to the sound of the waves. The staff were phenomenal, extremely friendly and hospitable. The highlight of our trip was the home cooked meal that they went out of their way to prepare for us, even though we were the only guest staying at the hotel. I am an ex chef and I was extremely impressed with the food. Best meal that we’ve had in Sri Lanka actually.
We are traveling in low season and as a result, it transpired that we were the only guests at the time of our visit. Due to low season, I expect that the staff numbers were reduced and as a result, the property was maybe not as clean and well kept as it usually is. The pool had algae. The location is also very remote. There was nothing to do here other than stay at the hotel and relax which is what we did.

Reviewed Apr 8, 2025My husband and I were looking for a place by the beach that wasn’t crowded with tourists so we could relax and recover after traveling in Sri Lanka for almost two weeks. We booked Spice of Ceylon for two nights. I got a chance to talk to the owner Elizabeth. She and her staff are wonderful people. The place has an old world charm to it, huge rooms, books to read, puzzles, a beautiful staircase, a yoga studio, balconies for a sunset, etc. Our bed and pillows were soft and comfortable. There was mosquito repellent there too. Thanks again for having us.

We ate all 3 breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and all were lovely and good value. Traditional fisherman on the beach and little noise. Safe place for a bike in you are cycling.

Reviewed Mar 10, 2025The building was lovely and the size of our room was great. The hosts, Elizabeth and Max, were kind people who were very friendly and accommodating and personally greeted us upon arrival. The location was interesting and our view of the beach with its fishing boats was good.
There was no water in our room due to a pump issue and the swimming pool had living insects in it which didn't inspire us to go for a swim in it! It would have been nice to have had a few more choices on the menu that catered for non-curry eaters which would be less hassle for the staff having to conjure something up.

Reviewed Feb 2, 2025The grandest teak & mahogany room you can imagine, in a really interestingly designed hotel which feels more like an extended-family's home! What a surprise, extraordinary craftsmanship, and, as in so much of Sri Lanka, absolutely lovely staff, food, and such a helpful manager too. It's a secluded little oasis; use the pool, as the sea shore is dangerously steeply shelving - just enjoy the sight of the fishermen & women coordinating their net-hauling. Come here for solitude and lovely in-house hospitality!
Our fault that we didn't twig that it's a 1200 rupee, 25 minute tuktuk into the nearest town of Chilaw, which is not the appetising sea-side town our UK Sri Lankan friends thought it would be! It's a semi-industrial, fishing-port cum railway node; do not be taken in by the hilarious hippy-review extolling it's virtues through rose-tinted specs, and instead enjoy your hotel's lovely food and quiet!

Reviewed Jan 7, 2025The service of the staff ans especially the manager of the hotel : Nishantha! He fixed anything for us ( callled the airport for our list luggage, arranged a wonderful boottour and tuktuk etc) . It was the exact start of our holidays we needed - thanks again !
Everything was perfect. What we knew in front and wanted was that it’s a place to relax and enjoy- not a lot of touristic things in the direct neaberhood. For us a plus!

Reviewed Mar 9, 2024Excellent location half way between Colombo & Wilpattu. Spacious rooms, clean with comfy beds. Great food & refreshing pool. We even swam in the sea, early morning walk along the beach & watched fishermen bring their catch ashore. Max & staff were friendly & attentive!
