Reviewed Sep 9, 2026Fantastic get away from it all setting, main house behind the unit buy they aren't attached and was very private. Country setting with potential for good nature hiking, biking, motorbikes, but the actual room felt really nice, unique, homely
Read the instructiona but could not get the TV to work, we were on a stay, have a complete chill, eat food, watch TV, wifi screen time and sleep.holiday. But we made do

I had driven eight hours from Gisborne to Otaki forks and arrived missing the parking sign on the front of barn. Woman drove up beside me where I parked and the welcome was a very rude greeting. " you cant park there, didnt you read the sign" then running off and disappearing....Grumpy and unhelpful, on arrival. I am a paraplegic and couldn't get in, and it became apparent at any help was a hassle. She did come and let me in when I eventually found her. Never saw her again. Would not stay here again.

Reviewed Jun 1, 2026I had booked the night due to the roads north of otaki being blocked all day. It was an unfundable booking. The cottage looked beautiful and I will definitely stay there in the future. When the road opened I approached Judith asking if she could please cancel without a,fee due the circumstances. This was very important to me as my mother is in a resthome in Levin. and is unwell. Judith kindly agreed to do this. And I am very grateful at her kindness and understanding. Thank you so much Judith.

WIFI connection was very poor. LED lighting was very bright and white. A few additional softer light stands could make the place much more cosy. Limited cooking facilities and small pot sizes.

Reviewed Feb 22, 2026We had such a lovely stay! The cottage was cosy and spotlessly clean, and the barn doors gave it a beautiful rustic feel. We really appreciated the thoughtful extra touches — the little chocolates, granola, toast and eggs for breakfast, plus milk and coffee. The beds were incredibly comfortable, and overall it was fantastic value for money. We’d happily stay again! My kids especially loved the visits from the owners dogs

On arrival, the key safe did not work but we then realised the site was unlocked instead. The cups had tea stains. Also, we could not find drinking glasses other than wine glasses. We tried using the TV, following the instructions but without success.

Reviewed Oct 27, 2025Bed so comfortable. Linens very high quality. Ripe avocado, eggs, milk, butter, good toasting bread, instant lattes, tea, all much appreciated. Shower hot and great water pressure. Bookshelf popular with whole family- Georgette Heyer, Alistair MacLean and Roald Dahl. Gardens look to be the work of decades. Cuddly but calm dog neighbors were added bonus. Gorge is gorgeous.

But when we arrived it was so much more than we had expected it was very warm and cozy and very family friendly. My kids loved it and the horse and the dogs were a fav.

Reviewed Feb 10, 2025Location was excellent, out from Otaki Township so very quiet. Room was comfortable and homely. Loved the big barn doors and view out was cool. Plenty of entertainment options, once we got the Skytv to work, (instructions weren't quite correct) books and one or two games.
Breakfast options were limited, cereal and rhubarb were the only ones, though the rhubarb was nice. There were eggs, 4 slices of bread to be toasted but the only spread, Olivani had expired 27th January 2025.

Reviewed Dec 26, 2024Comfortable beds, seating. Plenty of utensils. Amazing amount of space. Beautiful scenery.. easy access parking. Amazing shower.. A nice variety of breakfast availability. This place has now become our measuring stick against other accommodation around this price.
It's still worth bending slightly for just a heads up, or it could be heads down. People around 6ft an under will easily fit in the shower box..

Reviewed Oct 25, 2024Lovely little place far better than a hotel my kids loved it. Wonderful little touches like the compot and dart board! My kids have been waxing lyrical to their grandparents about it today. We really can't recommend this location enough.
The little black dog was so friendly and cute that my family are now insisting we buy one just like him!

WiFi dropped a couple of times. Strength could have been better. No biggie for us though.

When I arrived back at the property about 8pm it was a very chilly night. It took a long time for the room to heat up using the three bar heater. However if that was my only issue I would suggest the host has done well.

Reviewed Mar 2, 2024It's a very different sort of accommodation. Certainly, not typical in any manner. Set in a lovely country style estate, north facing, is this wonderful 'barn like structure'. Beautifully lined in sheet materials, high cathedral type ceilings, comfy furnishings, & a bed 'to die for' as it sort of wraps around you. There's also a second bedroom with a single bed. Very good value for money. Also the little 'extras' are great...extensive reading materials, for example. Oh, & the drive down Otaki Gorge Rd is very enjoyable underneath the over arching trees...it's a real grotto in parts.
Nope! Nothing really comes to mind. Perhaps a larger TV screen, if one wants to be really picky, & have it located opposite the bed for more relaxed viewing.

Sadly I could not open the barndoors as it was too cold. As a result, there are no windows, I sat cooped up inside with only artificial lighting and no view. Very depressing. Not how I envisaged a couple of days in the country.

booked weeks in advance. One hour before arrival I received a text telling me the host is overseas and there will be nobody at the property. I booked because they claim to be welcoming and helpful. I had to fumble around, figuring out how everything worked and when I text the host, she was rood. The barn had no windows and the wind was banging the huge doors and it was cold. I got no refund despite not using the room at all. I had to pay another place and drive there in the dark. Lovely
