מאד רחוק מהכפר של הר קוק (שעה וחצי נסיעה לכל כיוון) וזה משהו שהיה צריך לציין מראש לפני ההזמנה כי אחר כך לא ניתן לבטל וזו היתה עוגמת נפש. גם המחיר מאד גבוה ביחס למיקום הרחוק כל כך!

In our opinion the “Red Deer” room offered everything that was needed. No negatives to report.

Reviewed Jan 22, 2026L’accueil de l’hôtesse qui est charmante, très accueillante et serviable. Elle fait de son mieux pour recevoir ses hôtes. Un gîte propre et confortable, mais une insonorisation totalement absente. Un lieu calme, perdu au milieu de rien.
1/L’appellation Montcook station nous a induit en erreur comme d’autres personnes présentes durant notre séjour. Il faut faire 150km aller retour de pistes et routes pour accéder au village de Mont Cook qui se trouve sur la rive opposée des confluences des cours d’eaux descendants de MontCook. 2/ le bâtiment est très propre et très bien équipé mais très mal insonorisé. 3/ très peu de promenades sans rapport avec la zone montagneuse de Mont Cook

The hut/ tent is just to sleep, otherwise you have to go to main building. Which is actually not so cool if it rains.

Yes it is a long way off the sealed road but we worth it.Make sure you allow enough daylight - would not really want to do it in the dark with no phone signal (wifi is fine once you get out to the property ) Also don’t forget all supplies including sufficient petrol. Good shower, plenty of hot water and a fully equipped kitchen. Shorter walks in and around the property.
Be fully prepared to be sharing the property , its kitchen and bathrooms with other people - some are delightful but others are not so considerate of other guests.

Had a farm tour guided by the children. Good trails for walking. Opportunity for bird watching, star gazing and viewing Mount Cook without huge numbers of other tourists.

Reviewed Oct 14, 2025If you are looking for isolation this place is for you, it is a good 55 min drive on loose gravel off the main road, it is in a beautiful location and everything you need to cook is there for you, provided you bring food with you. I was there for 2 days and it was very peaceful, just the wind and the odd car passing.
I was a little worried I might get a puncher, whatever your plans, allow a good 45 mins before you leave.

Reviewed Oct 5, 2025Fantastic location! Beautiful view of the mountains, extremely easy access to walks. We saw deer and tahr, it was magical. Alana was super friendly and helpful, as were her children! They took us on a pet tour (bunnies, deer, cows, sheep, dogs), which was a highlight! The hut itself was neat, still original looking from the outside, but sharpened up a bit on the inside. Fully equipped and spacious kitchen, beds had electric blankets, great views from the windows, nice deck out front, with space to hang wet things and a good sized outdoor table.
We thought it might be made a bit homelier with some extra blankets in the lounge and some binoculars would be cool too! We would definitely come back, we would just bring slippers and blankets. Also 2.5 bathrooms were advertised, but only 1.5 were available.

It is too far from everything. I would say the only reason to drive there is to see the lake and mountains. The view over the mountains was beautiful in early morning. But its not guaranteed if its rain season. We knew to bathroom is shared, what we did not knew the room has the common wall with bathroom and extremely noisy ventilator on that shared wall. Every time someone goes to bathroom we could hear everything and the ventilator sound was terribly loud too. There definitely required much better soundproofing and a silent ventilator. For us we only booked this room as we could not find anything else in Twizel or Tekapo for that night.

Reviewed Mar 15, 2025Clever refurbishment of the shearers hut. The kitchen and lounge area are very good. Washing machine a bonus for us. And the view is excellent.
The use of thin veneer material is authentically pleasing but has zero sound proofing qualities. As has the original floor boards in the corridor. We were next to one of the bathrooms. A guest having a shower at midnight accompanied by a loud fan heater (attached to your wall) is not a pleasant experience. See photos.
