Such a nice quiet remote place run by a so sweet old lady, and who speaks English much better than most of other hosts I've met. Unforgettable experience.
Really good dinner and breakfast. Helpful staff.
Cibo ottimo e posiIone invidiabile.

Great location, quiet and comfortable to rest and sleep! Staff was kind and helpful, and very flexible with our arrival time which we greatly appreciated. Dinner and breakfast was simple and super delicious!
Very nice staff, bath/shower room was lovely and clean. Very beautiful location, and close to biwa waterfall and the famous vine bridge. The discount for a local onsen was a nice bonus. The dinner and breakfast were filling and very tasty, with local ingredients.
Our room had a funny smell (maybe from being above the kitchen). If you have are travelling on public transport the ryokan is about 10 minutes from the closest bus stop up a steep hill.
Lækker aftensmad og søde folk. Smukt område og fantastisk natur. En rigtig fantastisk oplevelse.
Yummy breakfast and dinner prepared by the lovely owner. Comfy room in a serene location. The shared bathrooms and toilets were clean. Near the vine bridge. And free parking! Would love to stay again 😊
Noting. Loved everything!
Het lag centraal. De oude eigenaresse was top. Eten was prima.

Hosts were amazing, 3 adorable old ladies willing to share their culture and their knowledge. They cooked delicious authentic japenese meals. Tried their best to communicate even with the language barrier. Thank you so much again !

The staff were super friendly, the food was superb and the Ryokan was very authentic. I could not ask for more.
Everything was great.
I traveled through Shikoku for 10 days without a car and staying at this ryokan was the highlight of my trip. I really wanted to visit the vine bridge and it’s located just down the hill from Iya Kankou. I was already blown away when I got off the JR train at the Oboke Station but a 20-minute bus ride up the mountain brought me to an absolutely stunning setting. The owner was so gracious and accommodating. Staying here was a chance to have the ryokan experience AND get off the beaten path into the mountains of Shikoku. The dinner and the breakfast were also a chance to have traditional Japanese meals (the owner offered many variations) and all 10(!) dishes were delightful. I was nervous about sleeping on the traditional bed on the floor but it felt the same as every other mattress on my trip through Japan. I like firm mattresses so I’ve been sleeping very well. I chose Iya Kankou Ryokan because of other reviews I read and I’m so glad I did! Note: you don’t have to get the meals but everything around is closed at night. She also offers snacks and drinks you can help yourself to (and pay for at checkout) and you can enjoy these on an expansive deck looking across to the waterfall and surrounding mountains.
Perfect.
- beautiful food - serene surroundings - amazing staff - comfortable amenities
Nothing everything was great
Great location directly opposite the vine bridges. Great home cooked meals and company in the dining room with lots of diverse travellers!
Nothing
We loved the peacefulness of the place and the food and people who hosted us and showed tremendous hospitality. The room was so relaxing and comfortable and the food prepared was delicious.
Everything was perfect.
Good basic food. Great location.
Winter doona in summer, 2 toilets and 1 shower for 12 people. Overpriced including food and drinks.
The staff is very kind and friendly, especially the old lady. They serve local food. The place is very close to the vine bridge.
The parking area is very small and your car might be blocked in. However we did not have any issues. There are steep stairs that lead to the rooms.
Excellent breakfast and dinner with big portions. Nice outdoor space with a view of the mountains was perfect place to relax and enjoy a beer.
Owner is very hospitable. Food is outstanding.
This is a very basic ryokan with no frills. Bedroom smelled like someone had cooked cabbage in it. Even with open window the smell did not dissipate over the two nights we stayed there.

Petit ryokan de 5-6 chambres. Type rural traditionnel.
The old lady running it. She can barely walks the stairs, but she is sooo cute. The best. She even can sing old Japanese. Thank you!!
The host of the Ryokan was extremely kind and helpful. We arrived late on the first night of our stay and were very grateful the dinner provided.
Family run, very beautiful property in a great location in a pretty place.
First and foremost, the staff were amazing. The lovely lady that runs the inn is a wonderful host. When I asked if she could accommodate vegan meals she did her best and was able to provide great dinners and breakfasts for me! The location is great, right in the middle of many points of interest in Iya valley. There were free parking spaces in front of the inn. The shared bath was clean and wide. The room was wide, clean and comfy.
Nothing, I will definitely come back if I visit Iya again!

Everything was just great a fantastic experience well run and so friendly.Very handy to everything, but you do really need a car. We were there on a weekend and used the buses which we managed with okay but they do restrict you. As an older couple 83 and 76 we could not have been happier with Iya Kankou, would thoroughly recommend.
Nothing to dislike.
This is such a lovely inn run by a wonderful family. They kindly prepared vegan dinner and breakfast for us. We had a very relaxing stay and loved waking up to the sound of the river.
If you are looking for 4 or 5 star luxury accommodation Iya Kankou Ryokan is not for you. However, if you are looking for a welcoming comfortable guest house with beautiful traditional meals and a wonderful hostess, this is the place for you. Yes, the stairs are steep (we were on the 3rd floor), yes, that facilities are shared not ensuite, but Bee San is a treasure and her hospitality is superb. Assisted by her son, - a chef, the meals are traditional, very tasty and very reasonably priced, as is the ryokan. Bee San has some English and s very helpful. The location, 5 min walk from the Vine Bridge and 8 min walk to the bus station and tourist centre is supurb.
The stairs are steep, but you just need to be careful and its helpful to have smallish suitcases.
Superlieve gastvrouw, lekker eten. Heerlijk verblijf op een prachtige locatie.
Kazu and Mother and Grandmother made us feel very welcome, after we arrived wet, dirty and tired after arriving by bike. They graciously accommodated my wife's gluten allergy, and the food was delicous.
The shared bathroom was an adjustment, but was not a problem. It just added to the experience.
Good value for money
I’d appreciate if there is more variety for breakfast.
The location was great. 10 minute walk down some steps to the vine bridge. Hilly walk to the bus but also max 15 mins between the stop and the guesthouse. I loved my experience here - the yukata and the food was plentiful and delicious. The hosts were kind and helpful, booking me an onsen in the neighbouring hotel and knew everyone in the area. It was one of the highlights of my trip, my stay here!
Nothing. Everything was marvellous!
Excellent quality for the price. Do not expect a luxury ryokan. This is the oldest one in Iya valley, opened 60 years ago by a lovely family. The food and the location are the highlights.

It's a truly stylish ryokan, run by a lovely family. It boasts stunning views of the river valley. I liked the little details, such as the sweets, yukata and tea set in the room. The kitchen is also worth exploring. It was certainly one of the best places we stayed at during our four-week trip in Japan.
No such thing
Klein aber fein. Besitzerin war sehr freundlich. Das japanische Essen war fantastisch!
Kein eigenes Bad und kein eigener Onsen.
Wonderful place to stay, perfect rooms and beautiful views! The dinner was so delicious and the staff were very friendly and helpful, would definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting to explore Iya Valley
Welcoming and beautiful location
Traditional futon and food.
Shared bath tub
Die freundliche Inhaberin und das schmackhafte Essen. Gemeinschaftseinrichtungen Tip Top.
The location, the food, front of house was grandma a fabulous lady. We loved being able to use the hotel up the road Onsen facilities. Grandma arranged for us at very preferential rates and we used the outdoor one, perfect view after going up in the vernacular cabin.
Nothing to complain about as it was exactly as described
La propriétaire tres gentille et aidant. Chambre typique Japonnaise confortable. Super repas.
Odeur de chou dans la chambre
The hostess was charming and so helpful. Food was exceptional, especially the local river fish. Our favourite stay in Japan for this trip

My perfect introduction to a ryokan stay. The host was hospitable and made sure I was comfortable. The breakfast and dinner was so delicious, including local foods. The room itself was comfortable and the location a perfect place from which to explore the beautiful Iya Valley. Transport was also relatively easy: caught a local bus from Oboke Station, which ran even during the New Year holiday period (check times though and opt for earlier services in case).
The food was really good. We are vegetarian and they made sure we had the right food. The room was simple but comfortable. The owner and staff were really friendly.
The host was incredibly welcoming and had run a hot bath ready for us. The rooms were quite large and the futons very comfortable. Great location opposite the vine bridge.
Simple accomodation run by a couple of friendly grandmas. They made one of the best meals I had throughout my 1.5 months in Japan. Highly recommend staying here if you're in the area. I don't recommend traveling with large suitcases as you have to walk uphill and downhill to get to this accomodation. Also the stairs inside the ryokan is pretty steep but overall it's a a fantastic stay.
